Dave Dorman, Bianchi, McKean, Linsner, Sekeris, Weatherly, Whitlach & Scott Robertson! Buck Rogers, Brothers of the Spear, Dark Knight, Marvel Mystery Comics New Doc Savage, The Shadow, variant cover...and exclusive signed books Signed Limited R. Crumb and new erotica The new Dawn 2012 Sketchbook by Joe Linsner is a good way to kick off our second week of new items, primarily from the San Diego Comic-Con. Joe includes a gripping preface where he discusses his recent work at Marvel but concludes that his heart is in Dawn and this is the first of a new mix of Dawn material coming. This adult-rated sketchbook has delightful nudity as Dawn offers viewers her many delightful angels. There's also some fun sexy pieces involving Spider-Girl, The Avengers, a vampy lady Capt. America, Vampirella herself, Jean Grey, Princess Leia and more delicious Marvel gals. We also still have the 2011 sketchbook, and a few copies left of the 2011 Dawn Calendar at just $3.99.
MORE NEW SKETCHBOOKS AND ART BOOKS FROM COMIC-CON
The Art of Daxiong is one of my favorite new items found at the Comic-Con. Daxiong Guo was born in China and became a teacher of comic and cartoon illustration, creating material still used in classrooms today. In 1999 he founded QiCartoon Studios with himself as chief illustrator, producing over 100 publications. He is currently one of the most successful and popular artists in Chinese and European comics, receiving first place in the Shanghai Animation & Comic Competition, and top honors at the 33rd Angoulême Int'l Comics Festival. In 2008 he moved to New York City and has worked for the Top 10 Special for DC/Wildstorm, Luke Skywalker Adventures for Dark Horse, Superman and Doctor Light in Samurai and the JLA written by Amanda McMurry, for DC
This is a full color and very impressive 140-page art book of comic illustration and character design. The work is gorgeous, particularly his beautiful Asian ladies. His design work is just stunning. I love his symbolizing the elements and the Zodiac, using ladies and creatures. And our copies each have a pen drawing as well as his signature. I hope we can restock more, since our few copies won't last long. Highly Recommended.
1000 Tentacles is another of my favorites. This small but powerful little book is in full color and is the work of two Malaysian artists, Leong WanKok and Khor PheikHoy. It's a feast of strange creatures, both drawings and from three-dimensional works worthy of Spectrum. Since these were produced overseas, we only have our initial stock and cannot reorder when they are sold out. Signed by Khor. Recommended.Frank Forte is a talented animator who also does creature and character design. The second half of this book is all fun animation work, much of it sequential. The first part shows his thinking and talent at character design. Best of all, for just $10 he's also included a full-page drawing, each one different, on the back cover of each of these sketchbooks. He's giving it away! Preview his work at his website frankforte.com. Limited to 500 and signed. Recommended.
Simone Bianchi Sketchbook San Diego 2012 - The Avengers, X-Men, Dark Phoenix, The Sub-Mariner, Dr. Doom, The Hulk, Thor and Batman--Simone has included both finished paintings and preliminary studies for fabulous covers. He's one of the finest cover artists today, each work is worthy of being placed with Alex Ross, Dave Dorman, Joe Jusko, etc. Limited to 600 numbered copies and signed. Recommended.
Dave Dorman 2012 Sketchbook - Dave's sketch work is finely tuned and finished, reminding me of the power and quality of Barry Windsor-Smith early studies for prints and portfolios. Dave is the go-to man for cover art from Marvel and Dark Horse, among others, and here are studies of a topless Batgirl, Darth Mal, some action studies of the 1940s Capt. America, Batman, sexy barbarian ladies in headlong battle, and more. Signed. Recommended.
Also from Dave Dorman is Pi a la Mode - This is a full color exhibit book from April 6-29, 2012. This was his first one-man show and he's pulled out the stops to offer his finest, fully-finished paintings. Here is Doc Savage, Capt. Nemo, Vampire Huntress, Ahab's Wife, Tura Satana, Tori Amos, Darth Vader vs. Capt. America, Iguana and Edge, Jane Carver at War...striking, powerful, dynamic works worthy of Gold Medals in any Spectrum Annual, and among the best covers the top comic book companies have to grab readers. Signed. Highly Recommended.Animal Nature: The Art of Joe Weatherly - We've handled each of Joe's fine books and in fact have brought back into our stock two of his most recent collections as well as this new one. He was one of our featured artists at San Diego Comic-Con. Joe's paintings of jungle animals, leopards, elephants, wolves, giraffes, tigers, a linx...Joe's specialty is animals and he can capture them in full tilt action or in peaceful jungle settings. I'd like to compare him to Bill Stout, whose murals of dinosaurs and animals of the Antarctic has the same elegance and power. Hardcover, full color, signed. Recommended.
Dave McKean: Persistence of Vision - A handsome exhibit catalog of paintings inspired by silent cinema. Dave is on the cutting edge of illustration, using photography, three-dimensional pieces and painting to create his unique visions for comic book and novel covers by the likes of Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman and so many others. This full color piece offers more of his surreal works. Specially signed by McKean.
NEW AND BACKLIST FROM DESIGN STUDIOES - MOST SIGNED
Teacher and animator Scott Robertson is one of three artists featured in Drive: Vehicle Sketches and Renderings. These animators offer you futuristic racing cars, huge military tanks and vehicles, sleek cars out of Syd Mead's playbook, and far more. A thick, full color softcover specially signed by Robertson.
Since Scott was willing to sign all these, we also restocked his excellent art book Start Your Engines: Surface Vehicle Sketches and Renderings, and Lift Off: Air Vehicle sketches and Renderings. Both are packed with concept cars and futuristic vehicles by a master animator and draftsman.
MetamorFX: The Art of Constantine Sekeris - Blade 2. Spider-Man 2 & 3. Where the Wild Things Are. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The Golden Compass. Hellboy 2. Terminator 3. Just a handful of the major films Sekeris has worked on. "One of the great challenges of any character designer is to convey not only design elements, but also depth and personality within the characters. Constantine's work embodies these qualities in a way that inspires me to push harder against the boundaries of what is possible in a character. His raw talent is a force of which I am in awe." -Aaron Sims. High praise from a man himself who is one of the top talents in film special effects. Sekeris is a master of both prosthetic make-up design and creature design, and here he offers you a plethora of his best characters, with full commentary on each. Amazing work. Signed especially for us by Sekeris.
Animals Real and Imagined by Terryl Whitlach - His Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide and The Katurran Odyssey are both classics of creature creation. Whitlach is an accomplished, scientific and academically-trained illustrator who has extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for zoos and museums and served as Senior Consultant for the World Wildlife Fund. From Star Wars Episode 1 to Jumangi, Men in Black to Dragonheart, The Polar Express to Beowulf, she's a 25-year veteran of creating accurate and yet incredibly imaginative alien creatures and monsters, be they killing machines or strangely cute. This is packed with model sheets, studies and finished paintings, both serious and humorous. Highly Recommended.MORE ART AND COMIC STRIP COLLECTIONS
The Art and Making of the Dark Knight Trilogy - 300 pages of behind-the-scenes at the three Christopher Nolan films, acclaimed as a new pinnacle in both filmmaking and the Batman legacy. Actor Michael Caine introduces this fine book of animation, special effects, vehicles, cityscapes, costuming, and character design for this latest summer blockbuster. Also don't miss the two related books featured last week, The Batmobile and The Dark Knight Manual. Also see our two DC Archives collections by Marshall Rogers and Jim Aparo.
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Newspaper Dailies: Volume 6 1937-39 - For decades, the only place fans could find these rare episodes were in obscure foreign publications, often not even in English. Here is the latest in Hermes' fine series of Phantom and Buck Rogers collections, offering both Sunday pages in full color and gorgeously large size, and wonderful dailies with off-world adventure.
Brothers of the Spear by Russ Manning and Gaylord Dubois collects one of my very favorite back-up strips. It began as a 4 or 5 pager in Tarzan Comics clear back in the early 1950s. Dark Horse obviously underestimated demand when the first printing of this in February 2012 flew out. We could not even fill all the advance orders we'd gotten. Now it's back in a second printing.
The latest Doc Savage and Shadow collections are here. I really love the new Shadow cover, which has him firing his .45 from behind a magazine rack with The Shadow and a Love Stories pulp! Michael Uslan provides a special introduction relating The Shadow to Batman, and this also includes the full radio play: The Comic Strip Killer. The new Doc Savage issue comes with a stunning cover variant done by James Bama. And also has a full radio script besides the two novels.
Justin Sweet told us at Spectrum Live we could only reorder Droar #1. His stock of Droar #2 and Droar #3 was too limited. But he relented at Comic-Con. We now have a few more copies available, so here's one more opportunity to get all three of these excellent sketchbook/paintings collections. Each is signed.
Gilbert Shelton was one of the Comic-Con guests but unfortunately we never got a chance to get reacquainted. I think I last saw Gilbert when he was still living near the old Rip Off Press warehouse in San Francisco, back in the 1970s. He moved to France long, long before Crumb did. His entire output of The Freak Brothers has been collected into a massive softcover that has been one of our steadiest sellers in the past few months, particularly since we dropped the price by $5 to $29.95. 624 pages!
At Comic-Con we also had the opportunity to restock several excellent books and then offer them to you at discounted prices. Now available are these Vanguard art books:
Alex Horley Sketchbook $24.95/$19.95Amazing World of Carmine Infantino SC $19.95/$17.95
Hal Foster: Prince of Illustrators $19.95/$17.95
How to Draw from Life by Joe Kubert $24.95/$18.75
The Paintings of J. Allen St. John, Master of Fantasy $24.95/$19.95
Tex: The Art of Mark Texeira SC $24.95/$19.95
ROBERT CRUMB 6 VOLUME SKETCHBOOK SET SIGNED/LIMITED COMING IN SEPTEMBER.

R. Crumb in a rare 1000-copy signed and limited edition. Taschen has announced a six-volume, slipcased set of sketches done from 1982 to 2011. This is the first collection of Robert Crumb sketches to be printed from the original art since the hard-bound, slipcased, seven volume series issued by the German publisher Zweitausendeins between 1981 and 1997. Unlike the Zweitausendeins edition, which included every doodle ever made by the preeminent underground artist, our best-of edition has been personally edited by the notoriously picky artist to include only what he considers his finest work, including hundreds of late period drawings not published in previous sketchbook collections.
Robert Crumb requested that the books representing the second half of his career be published first due to fan demand for new Crumb material (Volumes 7-12 cover the period 1982-2011, and the forthcoming Volumes 1-6 (in 2013) will cover the period 1964-1981). We have just five copies coming in; we may or may not be able to order any more. So the sooner you reserve your copy, the more likely you won't miss out. To be competitive with Amazon, we're discounting this at $175 off to just $825 with FREE SHIPPING. As always, if you use your charge card your card will not be billed until this is shipped out. It's due in late September.
NEW EROTIC ART
From SQ, these new erotic art collections:

Fantasy Art of Calandra
The Sweetness: Sketches and Drawings by Armando Huerta - Big boobs galore, nurses, ladies with guns, a nasty Princess Leia, some familiar Hollywood faces... full nudity and explicit works with fine detail and tones that make you forget these are in black and white. Numbered from 1000 and signed.
