Spectrum Fantastic Art Live: Bud's Show Report!

We just returned from Kansas City where we exhibited at the very first Spectrum Fantastic Art Live. This was produced by Arnie and Cathy Fenner, the editors of Spectrum, the annual of fantastic art.

The event was incredible!
There were 200 artists exhibiting and I talked to practically every one. James Gurney (Dinotopia) was there and was awarded the Spectrum Grand Master Award. Directly across the aisle from my booth was Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, so we got re-acquainted after not seeing one another for several years. That also happened with Michael Whelan, who I also hadn't seen in far too long. He's overdue for a new up-to-date art collection so I did my best to encourage him. I also worked on Omar Rayyan (Mismantle Chronicles, Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám)--he's overdue for a first art book. Omar quickly sold several wonderful fantasy paintings to the original art collectors prowling the show. I saw quite a few other "sold" tags in my wanderings.

I worked very hard to cover the room and find interesting new art books and sketchbooks to bring to you. This week we only have time to list the first few. I'll be getting others up on the website as quickly as possible--watch New Arrivals. And you'll see many more in the the next two or three eblasts, along with more news from the show.

Our Highest Recommendation goes to the show book, Spectrum Live! It features the work of the five guests of honor: Android Jones, Brom, Phil Hale, Ian McCaig and Mike Mignola. Our favorite publisher John Flesk produced this superb edition. The art inside is absolutely amazing, from unpublished drawings to magnificent, award-winning paintings. Each artist gets an introduction by the likes of artist William Stout and best-selling authors Christopher Paolini and Christopher Golden, while Phil Hale gets a full interview. Arnie and Cathy Fenner introduce the overall book. Ian McCaig's work here includes art from his designs for the John Carter film.

Everyone at the show was so busy
we could not get our copies of Spectrum Live signed. But a few years ago Brom gave us a very cool color painting, which we produced as a bookplate and he signed for us. You will get one of these at no charge with Spectrum Live. You'll also get a nifty Spectrum bookmark! This show was a very special event, and the first in what I hope will be an annual happening. As such, this first book is going to be highly prized.

For a look at the Spectrum Awards
ceremony and list of winners, Click here. You'll find these winners there: Gold AND Silver Medal winner Jean-Baptiste Monge and Gold Medal award winner Justin Sweet. Next week you'll see new items by each one here--and much more from the show.

Daren Bader is an exciting and innovative fantasy artist. His booth was adjacent to us at the Spectrum show. We asked him to sign copies of his art book that we handled previously unsigned. He also has a brand new book, One Hundred Drawings, which he also signed for us. Look at his work and see for yourself why I'm so enthusiastic to have these two books available. More of his work is at www.darenbader.com.

Michael Hayes has a wonderful collection of fully-finished fantasy work in his self-produced art book, Prologue. We first saw this at Wonder Con, but he sold out. Then we were supposed to get copies at Emerald City Con in Seattle. He sold out again. Finally we connected at Spectrum and now we have signed copies. You'll see why he can't keep these on hand at the shows. He's also online at www.artofmike.com.

Jeff Miracola is a creature- and character- designer who has long worked for Magic the Gathering, World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons. Monstrosity is his first collection of drawings. And if you can believe it, he has drawn--in ink--a small illustration in every one of our copies! And for just $15. You can see more of his work online at www.jeffmiracola.com.

Although his father Boris was at the show, Dorian Vallejo was not able to make it. But just arrived is his delicious 192-page hardcover. Much of this is devoted to full color portraits and drawings of beautiful women. Whether they are clothed or nude, the work here is exquisite. To force a comparison, if you don't know his work, imagine Jeffrey Jones' fine art work for Age of Innocence, or the figure studies of Kent Williams. Man, this is magnificent. It also gets Our Highest Recommendation, which I don't give lightly. Each copy is boldly signed in full.

This is also a good week for comics-related releases
. The first volume of Manara Erotica is here, with the best-selling "Click" and "Click2," "Rendezvous in B-Flat" and more. 292 pages by the number one erotic comics artist.

A new issue of Squa Tront is a rare and special event, not to be missed
. This issue features a rare interview with Howard Nostrand, an artist who could have easily fit in at EC Comics but instead was the premier artist, along with Bob Powell, doing pre-code horror at Harvey Comics. Also there's an amazing number of Jack Davis 1945 cartoons done while in the Navy, with a surprising number of pin-up panels and sexual humor! And Basil Wolverton!

Bizarre Thrills is the story of Bill Black's AC publications
, from his first good-girl-art fanzines to Golden Age reprints to his original, busty heroines in the tradition of The Phantom Lady and other icons of comics excess!

Turok Son of Stone Archives releases it's tenth volume, discounted now from the get-go. We also have all back volumes available at $10 off each one. As William Stout puts it in Volume 10, "The interior Turok art reached a fabulous peak after it was taken over by the great Italian comic-book artist Alberto Giolitti. Giolitt's prehistoric landscapes not only exuded mood and mystery, they were beautifully designed. The great EC Comics legend, artist Al Williamson, confided to me that he swiped Giolitti's swamps and jungles on a regular basis for his Secret Agent X-9 strips."

Journey Into Mystery #31-40, all from 1956, are featured in the latest Marvel Masterworks Atlas Era. Dr. Michael Vassallo's highly informative introductions to these are not to be missed, as he discusses each artist and story, with no punches pulled. He puts each creator clearly in context of both Atlas history and pre-code and (in this case) early post-code horror comics. Here we have classic work by Ditko, Al Williamson, George Roussos, Bob Powell, Joe Orlando, Bernie Krigstein, John Giunta, Gene Colan, even Wally Wood. By this time EC had folded up--except for Mad--and many of EC's best had moved over to Stan Lee's little company.

Click here for all our Atlas Era Archives. These excellent volumes are collecting some of the finest drawn comics, after EC, published in the 1950s and early 1960s. Strange Tales, Tales to Astonish, Jungle Adventures and Venus--all now discounted $10-$15 off cover price.

Click here for all our Marvel Masterworks, including Golden Age reprints of Capt. America, USA, Mystic, Sub-Mariner, Yong Allies and Marvel Mystery. And modern collections of Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, etc.

We have two more classic pin-up prints this week, a wonderful image of Irish McCalla in her skimpy Sheena costume, and signed by her. Plus "The Three Graces," a fine-art portrait of three voluptuous ladies by Zoe Mozert. From the same publisher we also have a mind-blowing nude by Gil Elvgren, "Still Life"--my hands-down favorite image of his--along with his fine-art nude "Eurasian Girl," Earl Moran's portrait of Marilyn Monroe, "Spanish Girl," and our best-selling nude "Amanda," by Bobby Tombs.

Robert Crumb's trading cards have proved to be perennial favorites
. Denis Kitchen has kept these in print and we're pleased to offer these nifty little boxed sets once again. There are 36 full color cards in each set, complete with notes on the back about each Jazz Greats, each Blues Hero and in the case of the general set, each Crumb character, from Angelfood McSpade to Fritz the Cat and Devil Girl. Written by comics historian Dave Schreiner.

Finally, the first-ever collection of new Lone Ranger prose stories
. 16 new stories by an impressive list of writers, plus--exclusive to this deluxe hardcover edition--an extra 14-page look at Lone Ranger history by editor Tim Lasiuta. Cover by Ruben Procopio. For our Lone Ranger pulp reprints click here!

See you....next week! Have a wonderful Memorial Day.

Some of my favorite new Items:

DAREN BADER: One Hundred Drawings
Our Highest Recommendation
Signed! Fantasy artist Daren Bader has unleashed a truly wonderful new art book. This beautiful, colorful hardcover is designed to be read cover to cover and then flipped over and read again from side two. Side One is like an old "best of" album filled with girls, creatures and action. It is your classic "fantasy art" fare, with several nods to Frazetta, including the Death Dealer and Conan. This includes painting studies for his glorious work for Wizard of the Coast. Side two presents Daren's pieces done for his own enjoyment. Studies of movie stills and "life drawings" of sculptures, and animals. Of course it is also loaded with girls, creatures and action, beautifully printed in brown inks on brown backgrounds and actually printed in full color throughout! If you know Daren's work, you will want to grab this book. If you don't know him, then you need to see this. Signed by the artist.

PROLOGUE: The Art of Michael C. Hayes Volume One
Our Highest Recommendation
Signed! Michael Hayes has a wonderful collection of fully-finished fantasy work in this self-produced art book, Prologue. We first saw this at Wonder Con, but he sold out. Then we were supposed to get copies at Emerald City Con in Seattle. He sold out again. Finally we connected at Spectrum and now we have signed copies. You'll see why he can't keep these on hand at the shows.
He's done work for Wizards of the Coast (Magic the Gathering), Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Online, LucasArts, Nightshade Books, Palladium Books, and more. This first collection features the best of his work, from the beginning of his career right into 2012. He's also online at www.artofmike.com.

DRAWINGS: Inspired by Life
Our Highest Recommendation
Signed! Published by Dorian himself and only available from very selected sources, this is a delicious 192-page hardcover. Much of this is devoted to full color portraits and drawings of beautiful women. Whether they are clothed or nude, the work here is exquisite. To force a comparison, in case you haven't seen Dorian's work before, imagine Jeffrey Jones' fine art work for Age of Innocence, or the figure studies of Kent Williams. Man, this is magnificent. Dorian's father Boris Vallejo provides the introduction but there the two part company. Where Boris is devoted to strictly fantasy work, Dorian has gone in another direction entirely. And we are so pleased he has. This is not to be missed and is actually an excellent value for the size and quality of this impressive hardcover. Each copy is boldly signed in full.

Signed with original picture! Jeff Miracola is a creature- and character-designer who has long worked for Magic the Gathering, World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons. Monstrosity is his first collection of drawings. And if you can believe it, he has drawn--in ink--a small illustration in every one of our copies! And for just $15. This is filled with nicely detailed monsters, creatures, dragons, skeletons, nice naked ladies, serious portraits, figure studies. Some full page, many are 3 or 4 to a page and well worth a close look. You can see more of his work online at www.jeffmiracola.com.

SQUA TRONT #13
Highly Recommended
Five years in the making and meticulously edited by John Benson, Squa Tront returns with a profusion of rare and interesting features from the EC era: the story behind Basil Wolverton’s first EC art; Howard Nostrand’s last interview; art from the unpublished third issue of Flip; Jack Davis’s WWII cartoons; plus EC era art by Wallace Wood, John and Marie Severin, Harvey Kurtzman, and Roy Krenkel.
A new issue of Squa Tront is a rare and special event, not to be missed. This issue features a rare interview with Howard Nostrand, an artist who could have easily fit in at EC Comics but instead was the premiere artist, along with Bob Powell, doing pre-code horror at Harvey Comics. Also there's an amazing number of Jack Davis 1945 cartoons done while in the Navy, with a surprising number of pin-up panels and sexual humor! The longest running EC historical magazine.

TUROK SON OF STONE ARCHIVES Volume 10
Turok Son of Stone Archives releases it's tenth volume, discounted now from the get-go. As William Stout states in this volume, "The interior Turok art reached a fabulous peak after it was taken over by the great Italian comic-book artist Alberto Giolitti. Giolitt's prehistoric landscapes not only exuded mood and mystery, they were beautifully designed. The great EC Comics legend, artist Al Williamson, confided to me that he swiped Giolitti's swamps and jungles on a regular basis for his Secret Agent X-9 strips."
Indian braves Turok and Andar find themselves in a never-ending string of dangerous situations as they struggle to escape the mysterious lost valley. Seeking to return to their homeland and their tribe, they are pursued by maddened dinosaurs, surrounded by sea honkers, threatened by a volcanic eruption, and fight for their lives in a dead city. BIZARRE THRILLS: The Paragon Publications Story
Between 1968 and 1982, Paragon released more than 40 publications, fueled not only by Bill’s love of good-girl art of the 1940s, but also a healthy dose of something woefully rare in the mainstream comics of the day, and that is strong female characters. This volume collects some of the best of this long unavailable material; 21 full vintage stories in all, starring the likes of Synn (when she was still referred to as The Girl From LSD), The Shade (his original origin), Tara, Stormy Tempest, Nightveil (at a point that she was being referred to as “Phantom Lady”), The (original) Scarlet Scorpion, the prototype for Stardust and others. In addition, Bill provides a complete Paragon Publications index, an overview to how it all ran, notes and history; plus comments from fans/readers of the day. Most of this material has been unseen anywhere for more than three decades!

MANARA EROTICA Vol 1
Recommended
Italian comics legend Manara may well be the greatest erotic storyteller in comics! This new collection will bring back these long-unavailable stories. This first volume is anchored by all four chapters of Manara's internationally acclaimed Click! A beautiful but seemingly passionless woman is plunged into a hilarious, sensuous and highly erotic world-spanning adventure when she is implanted with a remote-controlled chip able to unleash her wildest hidden desires at the Click of a switch. Manara classics Rendezvous in B-flat and The Last Tragic Day of Gori Bau & the Callipygian Sister round out this dazzling compilation, all newly translated by European comics expert Kim Thompson, and featuring an introductory essay by Italian editor and author Alessandro Ferrari.

Goofy? Happy? Tally Ho! It's Frazetta's Funny Stuff!

A new issue of Illustration Magazine is always a special event. This is no exception, featuring three long and satisfying articles on fine artists of the 1950s-1980s: two vintage paperback artists, one finally being recognized, plus Coby Whitmore, whose beautiful, stylish women were the epitome of 1950s glamour.

Several of the latest issues of Illustration have quickly sold out. We hope he has now increased his print run to keep these available for some time, but we won't know for sure...so don't miss out, these are tough to find after they're gone. We have a good selection of all available issues, including re-issues of #1-3 and much more. Click here for everything now available.

Frazetta Funny Stuff. Another special event is the appearance of a new collection edited by Craig Yoe. Craig is a good friend of mine, but that doesn't impact my endorsement of his books. What we have in common is our love of the best and the wackiest in comic book history. Each of us, in our own way, work hard to introduce fans to delicious comic book art and stories. This book gets my rarely given "Our Highest Recommendation." If my own review isn't quite enough, here is another glowing review! Plus this is discounted to just $39.99, a $10 savings.

Click here for all our books with Frank Frazetta.

Everett Raymond Kinstler: The Artist's Journey Through Popular Culture, 1942-1962...now at a discount in all three editions. My long-time friend and partner Jim Vadeboncoeur regularly produces Images, a fine magazine collecting illustrations from the late 19th and early 20th century. His one and only book project, which took more than two years to produce, was all about Everett Raymond Kinstler.

"Ray," as he is known to friends, began in the comic books in the 1940s, even drawing Hawkman for DC and The Black Hood for MLJ. He hit his stride and became the premiere cover and story illustrator for the much-collected Avon comics in the early 1950s. Avon was one of the most lurid comic book publishers, adorning covers with near-naked ladies, classic bug-eyed monsters, heroic and villainous western heroes like Jesse James and Kit Carson, film noir detectives like The Saint, and horror and savage war titles. Kinstler did it all there, and here is his gorgeous fine line art, including the fabulous "contents page" inside cover art that introduced the stories and is one feature that makes Avon comics so highly collectible today. Ray then worked on paperback covers, pulp and magazine illustration, and finally, became known in the "high art" circles for his iconic portraits of presidents and celebrities.

But he remains proud of his roots in popular culture and helped Jim to produce this superlative book. Featuring his early work, often from the original artwork Ray still owns, this is a treat for any comics, paperback or illustration fan. Kinstler was a long-time admirer and friend of James Montgomery Flagg, whose fine line style was a strong influence on Kinstler. Ray ended in the top leadership of the Society of Illustrators, a friend and supporter of artists classic and contemporary.

My friend Jim put together the book and had a softcover edition co-published by the renowned Underwood Books (Spectrum annual, the three Frazetta collections, The Art of Jeffrey Jones). But lacking the time and money to promote this, it has quietly been selling only to the in-the-know fans like my customers. Jim has reduced the price on these prize editions: The Deluxe, a signed and limited of just 700 copies was $95. Now it's $79. It includes 16 extra pages and a color signature plate, in slipcase. The $44.95 hardcover, in jacket, is now $29.95. The satisfyingly thick softcover, 224 pages, was a bargain at just $24.95. Now it's at the ridiculous low price of just $12.95. Act now...the printings were very small and once gone, these will be tough to find.

Gahan Wilson: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons is available at $50 off the published price of $125. This two-volume set features over 800 pages of wonderfully macabre and dark cartoons, in a handsome illustrated slipcase. If you like Charles Adams or Gary Larson...well, Wilson took Adams a step further and darker but still hilarious. And there is no doubt he inspired the work of the perhaps better known Larson, whose own work has also been collected in a large volume like this. Wilson is a master, and his work for Playboy is clearly his finest in a long career of scaring the wits out of us. Now just $75.

Showcase Presents: All-Star Squadron - these are printed in black and white. But for exactly that reason, DC can give you 500, sometimes 600 pages of complete stories. An Archives with far less pages runs $50-$60! Here you get quite literally dozens of issues! I carefully pick just the best in this series, titles and artists that are the most fun to read. This new collection by Roy Thomas is a great tribute to the 1940s Justice Society stories in All Star Comics. Recently we brought in the widely acclaimed run of The Spectre. Plus we have Our Army at War, Ghosts and the surprisingly fun Young Love. All are disounted to just $17.99 each. That is around three cents a page!

Enjoy!

FRAZETTA FUNNY STUFF
Our Highest Recommendation Frank Frazetta! He's been rightfully called "The Grand Master of Fantasy Art"! But, it's little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories. Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don't know the complete extent and incredible range of this wonderful, seminal and charming work. This book is a whopping 256 page, large-format pages, culled from several key collectors to include each and every humorous text illustration and story Frank did circa 1944-1953! Don't miss this incredible part of the Frazetta legend, a labor-of-love book from the dedicated Craig Yoe Studios.

ARCHIE'S SUNDAY FINEST
Recommended Continuing the Eisner Award-winning series of the rare Archie newspaper strips by Bob Montana, we turn our attention to his remarkable full-color Sunday pages--never before collected! Archie's Sunday Best is the first-ever collection of the late 1940s and early 1950s color Sunday strips. Montana is approaching the peak of his creative juices in these pages, which feature classic Archie characters, the still-evolving but lovely Betty and Veronica. An entirely new take on this seminal comic book icon, as the creators put their very best into these delightful weekly episodes.

BLOOD: Miniature Paintings of Sorrow and Fear
Very limited availability. Last copies of this scarce 2nd printing. It is larger than the 2x3 first printing and it contains 16 extra pages! A miniature exhibition book, from the best-selling creator of Bunnies and Bees and Anima Mundi -- both of which sold out in a matter of weeks. Includes details and drawings of paintings from "Blood" exhibited at Earl McGrath Gallery.
These surreal images are rendered in Ryden's immaculate technique that recalls early children's book illustrations, though with a bizarre twist. There are images of Christ on the cross, children weeping tears of blood, a little girl holding her decapitated head or sitting sadly at a grave side. And other beautifully rendered but strongly disturbing visions. Strikingly handsome red hardcover. Beautifully embossed borders and gilt-printed titles, with an oval color plate embossed into the cover. Plus gilt on all the page edges.

SHOWCASE PRESENTS ALL-STAR SQUADRON Vol 1
Recommended The Justice Society in the 1940s All Star Comics remains one of the most beloved series of stories from the 1940s. They are at the top of the collectibles market, four books have been written about them, the best Golden Age creators worked on them. Fan Roy Thomas became a professional under Stan Lee, inspired in part by his love (and collecting) All Star.
Now here was his chance to recreate that 1940s magic in modern comics, and, oh, did he have a good time. In these stories from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #193 and ALL-STAR SQUADRON #1-18, the All-Star Squadron has been founded on Earth II by the lost heroes from the JSA to stop Per Degaton from delivering mystic weapons to the Axis powers! The 1940s versions of The Atom, Hawkman, Dr. Mid-Nite, Robotman, Plastic Man, Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle and The Shining Knight come together, with an origin story and 19 fun-filled issues. Published from 1981-87. Even Solomon Grundy and The Spectre make appearances.

HARVEY PEKAR'S CLEVELAND
A lifelong resident of Cleveland, Ohio, Harvey Pekar (1939-2010) pioneered autobiographical comics, mining the mundane for magic since 1976 in his critically acclaimed series American Splendor. This is sadly one of his last, but happily one of his most definitive graphic novels. It presents key moments and characters from the city's history, intertwined with Harvey's own ups and downs, as relayed to us by Our Man and meticulously researched and rendered by artist Joseph Remnant. At once a history of Cleveland and a portrait of Harvey, it's a tribute to the ordinary greatness of both. Introduction by Alan Moore.

MODERN MASTERS Vol 27: Ron Garney
Recommended Ron Garney really knows how to tell a story. The same can be said of many comic book artists, but few do it with as much style and panache as Garney. He can draw cinematic blockbuster action with the best of them, as his iconic run on Captain America, Hulk, Wolverine, and Weapon X will attest. But he also excels at depicting the quiet moments. There is emotional nuance in his work, which elevates every story he illustrates, no matter if the subject matter is introspective or straight-ahead action. Combine this with his eagerness to experiment and his constant professionalism, and the result is Ron Garney, Modern Master! Interview, biography, and lots of previously unseen artwork.

MODERN MASTERS Vol 11: Charles Vess
Highly Recommended The enchanting artwork of Vess is featured, with an in-depth interview, hundreds of drawings, sketches, finished works, and a gallery. Whether it be his book illustrations, his paintings, or his comic book stories, Vess' award-winning work evokes worlds of magic and wonder. Inspired by classic artists like Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, Vess carries on that fine tradition. His illustrations for authors like Neil Gaiman (Stardust) and Charles de Lint (Circle of Cats, Seven Wild Sisters) are in perfect harmony with their fantastic worlds. But he's also done a Spider-Man graphic novel--where Spidey goes to Scotland! And a Michael Chabon historical adventure. And on and on and on... Includes an 8-page color section.  Modern Masters is an ongoing series celebrating the lives and work of the greatest comic book artists. The series shares the goals, insights, motivations and influences of the featured comic artist, along with interesting background details.

EURASIAN GIRL DELUXE PRINT
Highly Recommended Beautiful lighting and skin tone, an olive-skinned beauty who is far from today's typical pin up. The model was a member of a visiting ballet troupe who, due to an injury, could not dance. Someone suggested modeling at the American Academy of Art, and the result was this rare work. Not a pin-up but a fine art work. Elvgren was very proud of this: painted in 1946, it hung in his living room until he died in 1980, and remains in the family. An alluring and very classy work, reminiscent of W. Russell Flint, the famous fine art painter who apecialized in nudes after a career in book illustration, and of pin-up artist Bobby Toombs' Amanda, our most popular print. Note: Some prints have a bent corner in the border which does not cross onto the image. Also may have some waviness from getting slightly damp, also on the white border and also does not encroach on the image. If this is framed both imperfections would be hidden.

Closeouts, New Andrew Loomis, and Bunny's Beautiful Backsides!

Andrew Loomis
I'm very pleased to report Successful Drawing is the newest Loomis book to be reprinted. This was the fourth volume of his incredibly popular best-sellers. Fun with a Pencil, his first, was designed as a book for beginners and hasn't been reprinted yet. Figure Drawing for All it's Worth, his second, was designed for would be artists to make the next step from fun to profits. Creative Illustration, also not yet reprinted, was written for more advanced students. Prices for this long out-of-print volume start around $80 and quickly go into the $100s for a nice copy.

Successful Drawing was next, designed for art students and practicing artists. Here he clearly presents the elements of good craftsmanship. And for the first time, he closely explains working with perspective and he clarifies the relationship of proportion and perspective to the study of light and shadow. He also presents a portfolio of finely drawn pencil studios, which make up almost half of this book. Wonderful nude figure studies & portraits, heads and faces, landscapes, costumes, etc.

Here is why even the layman like myself, who has no interest in becoming an artist, still loves these books. Loomis was a master, evidenced by his long career in commercial art, working for clients like Coca-Cola and the Saturday Evening Post. But he is best known today as a fabulous teacher and the creator of these instructional books so highly prized by art students and fans alike. We also have Drawing the Head and Hands. All three books are discounted from $39.95 to $34.95.

Art of Fiction Studios: We have a matched set of 4 new sketchbooks this week, one of which is featured below. These four artists all belong to the same studio in Southern California. We'd hoped to get these all signed but that has proved difficult--since these are very reasonably priced in any case, we are offering them as-is. If we are able to get bookplates for any or all later, we'll let you know and would be happy to send them to you.

The Avengers movie is out and over the first weekend became the highest grossing movie ever! I'm so pleased, since I love the "retro" style taking us back to the 1960s Marvel origins, plus I'm a big fan of director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly/Serenity, Angel). Featured below is a new Avengers book, The Kree-Skrull War. We also still have Avengers: The Origin by Joe Casey and Phil Noto, and Avengers 1959 by Howard Chaykin, available for immediate shipment. We also have a couple statues featuring heros from the Avengers. Our statues are available here.

Bunny Yeager is recognized as the photographer who captured the finest pictures of Bettie Page. Bunny was a gorgeous model herself and knew how to put her subjects at ease, from Bettie to Diane Webber to Playboy Playmates. Playful, teasing and sultry nudes were her specialty. We have a new book this week devoted to her best 1950s and 1960s pictures of Beautiful Backsides, with a cover featuring Bettie Page. It's discounted to just $21.99. Click here for more items featuring Bunny's photographs, and click here for all our Bettie Page material.

Lovecraft and Stephen King: We've brought back very limited quantities of two more wonderful deluxe volumes from Centipede Press.
A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by HP Lovecraft Slipcased Hardcover - This was first published at $395 and sold very, very well. Centipede has just a handful of copies left, less than ten. Then it will be out of print and likely to go up in price. They are now asking $450 on their website, but our copies are the original $395 with free shipping.
Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King Slipcased Hardcover - This was published at $295 but we have copies available for just $225. If you get your order up to $300, you also get free shipping.
We also have just one copy of the 'super deluxe' of this book, signed by ALL of the artists. Published at $995 and now unavailable from the publisher. Our copy is $895 with free shipping. It weighs an amazing 42 pounds, the biggest book we have ever offered!

Back in Stock:

Bob Powell's Terror $24.99, now $20.99 - Another nice book that went out of print for a while, now available again.

The Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim Vol 1 Hardcover by Alex Raymond. $75, now $55.95 - This has been unavailable for several months now. Besides being difficult to restock, we've gotten copies damaged in shipment due to the large size--so beware buying one elsewhere without seeing it first. We always reject these damages so you are guaranteed to get a perfect copy, carefully re-packed to protect it when we ship to you.

We now have a small stock and I'm discounting these $19 off, while our supply lasts. This is the beginning of a great new series from IDW publishing. It is truly the "definitive" collection in handsomely large size. These gorgeous Sunday Pages are complete with the rare Jungle Jim "toppers," also by Alex Raymond and never before collected in full color like this.

We'll be at the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live show in Kansas City May 16-18. Hope to see you there. And when we return we should have some great new signed sketchbooks and art books to tell you about.

MonsterMen and Other Scary Stories!

Gary Gianni's Monstermen and Other Stories is very, very cool. And he's added a signed bookplate to accompany this, since we've been friends for quite some time now. This is a handsome, large-sized hardcover that collects both comic-book stories from various Hellboy comics, and illustrated prose by Weird Tales masters William Hope Hodgson, Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard. 168 pages of horror and mystery that will take you back to the hallowed days of classic art and storytelling. Introduction by Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon! All for $25!

Naughty and Nice: The Art of Bruce Timm Deluxe/Signed Edition - This has been sold out for some time now but...we have six last copies available. Even the publisher is no longer offering this. They are $150 (publication price was $100), while our supply lasts, which I expect to be just a few days. We still have copies of the regular edition (it's massive!), which is $50.

Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! is in Kansas City on May 16-18. Anne and I will be there with our latest new items, lots of sketchbooks, and selected out-of-print art books and illustrated books. I hope to see you there. Once we are back, we should have a nice batch of new items. There are a great many artists attending so we anticipate finding some great new sketchbooks and art books.

Upon our return we'll also have the Spectrum Live art book, which has been produced by publisher John Flesk and features work by the five Guests of Honor: Android Jones, Brom, Iain McCaig, Phil Hale and Mike Mignola. You can pre-order this now. Although this is normally unsigned, I hope to get a few of these signed by the attending artists. These will be first come, first served.

Besides the Spider-man New York Statue you'll find below, The Thing statue also came in this week. That completes the four Fantastic Four statues, all of which remain available as I write this. They've done pretty well for us, so I won't be surprised if they sell out unexpectedly. All of these are discounted $10 off to $39.99, exclusively from us.

Keeping Dean Yeagle's Mandy and Scribblings in stock has been a continual problem, as they are among our most popular sellers. But right now every title is available. Dean has just told me he's working on a 16-month calendar for 2013. Watch for it this summer.

Clean Cartoonists Dirty Drawings Deluxe - This 300-copy edition went out of print in early 2008, just four months after it was published. We turned up a very limited number of these, signed by both editor Craig Yoe and Dean Yeagle.

Nick Cardy and Joe Jusko - What can these two very different artists have in common? Besides a love of comics and high acclaim as superlative artists? They both have a new sketchbook out! Nick's is literally from World War II--these are the sketches he did while in the service and in combat. And he's signed this handsome hardcover, that comes with a DVD. Joe Jusko is one of my favorite modern artists. From Vampirella to Tarzan, he has done some of the most iconic images of top heroes and heroines in the past two decades. Tim Bradstreet introduces this handsome collection, also signed.

Game of Thrones - I've become a big fan of this HBO series and look forward to digging into the books by George R.R. Martin. Small aside: I first read Martin's work in a fanzine in the mid-1960s, when he was still a fan writer. Great story, called "Bat-Wing." Anyway, Dark Horse is doing merchandise for the series. We just brought in the playing cards and will shortly have coaster sets with the clan emblems from both seasons one and two.

Out of print and rare books: For many years, Jim Vadeboncoeur and I had a "sister" business selling the same kinds of art books and illustrated items we collected ourselves. It was known as Bud Plant Illustrated Books. Jim retired from the business and now devotes himself to producing Images, which you've seen me mention here. Jim also maintains a killer website with lengthy, excellent biographies of over 100 iconic illustrators. Click here to take a peek.

My PhotoMeanwhile, my partner Anne and I continue that business under the new name "Bud Plant and Hutchison Books." Anne specializes in children's books and illustrated books, mostly post 1950. My area of interest is earlier work, along with lots of comics-related books and art books by sci-fi and fantasy artists. You can view a portion of our inventory online here. If you are looking for a particular item, drop Anne an email at bpandhbooks@me.com or call 530-273-9762. Most of my material is NOT online, and I have a LOT of books and zines, as well as vintage Golden Age and Silver Age comics.

We are now posting these weekly emails to my blog. Click here to check them out. If you missed any, that's where to find them. If you have any comments on what I've said or about any of the featured items, you're welcome to post them right there. Or write to me directly: bud@budsartbooks.com.

Enjoy! -Bud

NICK CARDY: The Artist at War
Renowned commercial artist, designer, and sequential illustrator from DC Comics' Silver Age, Nick Cardy is now in his 90's. He's been drawing his whole life. And thank goodness for that, as these recently unearthed sketches contribute not to our pop culture history--as do his other works, but to our history. When he was serving in WWII, and without benefit of a camera, Nick proceeded to do what he did best--carrying a sketchbook and documenting his time in the conflict from beginning to end--the humor AND the horror. Each sketch and painting is accompanied by Nick Cardy's own commentary. Plus this comes with a 30 minute DVD which features Nick talking about his experiences. Signed by Cardy!

STILL LIFE Print
A stunning, erotically charged painting unlike any Elvgren we've seen. This is the first publication, direct from the painting that just sold. The artist's sense of humor surfaces in the title, as there is a bowl of fruit in the foreground, the last element anyone is going to notice. Center stage is a gorgeous, utterly nude white woman who is held captive, her stunning assets being literally fondled by an anxious-to-please topless harem girl, the Shiek and two other girls looking on. A tall powerful Nubian warrior grips the helpless girl from behind. She is 100% Elvgren, incredibly appealing. Printed on heavy archival coated stock.
