New Adventures into the Unknown,
Mad and Rocketeer Artists Editions, and Frank R. Paul

The Phantom Lady Volume 1 - English publisher PS Art Books presents the very first top drawer, complete collection of the most famous--and infamous--good girl of the Golden Age. But instead of starting with the Matt Baker issues, they've gone back and presented the first 23 appearances by the first Phantom Lady, as published as a regular feature in Police Comics, home of Plastic Man and The Spirit. This gal was also a whole lot of lady, and featured art by some fine talent, including Joe Kubert and Frank Borth.
Previously announced as containing just the first THREE Fox comics issues, this actually includes the first FIVE issues. It's time for PRIME Matt Baker and the most cleavage ever seen in a comic. And leg art... and sultry poses and lingerie shots, you name it, The Phantom Lady delivered in spades. Excellent long illustrated introduction by Roy Thomas.
Highly Recommended.

Frank R. Paul: The Dean of Science Fiction Illustration by Jerry Weist -- I will be first to admit I never considered myself a big fan of Paul's work. As Robert Weinberg writes here "...Paul wasn't the first artist to specialize in science fiction, nor was he the best. Still, without question, he was the most important. More than any other illustrator, he was responsible for the early popularity and growth of the science fiction field...[if] Gernsback was the father of modern science fiction, then Frank R. Paul was the heart and soul..."
But I'm now won over. Jerry Weist, owner of the Boston comic store Million Year Picnic, creator of the first major comic book auctions via Sotheby's, editor of EC fanzine Squa Tront, is better qualified than just about anyone to talk about Paul. Jerry loved SF, collected it (and comics) avidly, and also collected original art by Paul. This book not only shows the originality and creativity of the pioneer, but it also collects together more Paul than anywhere ever before. All 328 magazine, pulp and digest covers are here in full color in a cool "illustrated" bibliography of his work. Here too is more original art, both covers and interior art, than ever before collected.
Jerry (and editors Roger Hill and Glynn Crain) make the case of just how important and talented Paul is. And I'm won over. This is a great book, filled with quintessential aliens and robots, space ships and alien worlds, space war and asteroids and, man, just get a copy. I couldn't put this down.
Highly Recommended.

Mad Artist's Edition and Dave Stevens The Rocketeer Artists Edition (second printing)-- They didn't really both arrive this week, but our source who shall remain unnamed sent us just two copies of our rather large order, two weeks ago. With no explanation about more copies. Fortunately IDW was there to take care of us and now we have enough copies of both books to satisfy early orders. But these remain unavailable from that same distributor source, so how long these will be in print is anyone's guess. The second printing of the Wally Wood EC Stories quite suddenly sold out once again--our favorite book in this series. The upcoming Will Eisner The Spirit looks to be a smash and we are again crossing our fingers we can get all we've ordered. So please, act now to avoid missing out. These Artist's Edition are true collector's items, and I don't use that word lightly.

Dan Brereton the Goddess and the Monster -- We liked Dan's Sirens collection so much, we decided to bring back this 2010 collection published by Image. It's packed with wonderful full color paintings of monsters and lovely bad girls. Dan's also created a special deluxe edition by drawing a nicely detailed picture of Bride of Frankenstein, and tipping it into the regular edition. He's signed both the print and the book itself, again. These are literally done to order and only available from Dan himself, if you catch him at a show, and from us.
The regular edition ( with signed bookplate DAGHS $29.99 ) is also nearly available, it should be here shortly after you read this.

A Fine Line: Scratchboard Illustrations by Scott McKowen - This is another favorite book of mine that has been in search of a larger audience. Like woodcuts, scratchboard is a fascinating medium that offers drama and power that is difficult to capture in other mediums. And McKowen also is a brilliant innovator, creating jaw-dropping work that has been featured on the covers of major magazines and in national ad campaigns. Here is his first collection and it's a good one. Now on sale, at a price I hope that will entice you to give this outstanding book a try.

News and Notes
Fair warning...the sale-priced books we featured last week all remain available as I write this--but some just barely. Several will not last more than another week or two. Fire and Water: Bill Everett is already in short supply. Several of the Marvel Masterworks including Journey Into Mystery, Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense, as well as the Atlas Era with our signed John Romita bookplate, are almost gone. We cannot get more of these at these special prices. Click here to see last week's email on our blog.
