All-New PS Artbooks Sale

Our favorite comic book archives publisher has remaindered—put on sale—40 more titles, all covering the Pre-Code Horror period. A few are regular hardcovers, now $19.95 each--but most are slipcased editions published at $69.95 each, which we now have at $21.99! We also have a few deluxe slipcased editions, which include a signed print, originally $119.99, now $29.99.

Quantities on some of these are limited—on several titles, we bought out all that were available, usually 35 copies or less. There are even several Planet Comics volumes!

Because there are so many, we’re breaking these up over this week and the next two weeks’ emails. But you can now, or very shortly, see all available titles on our website.

And to see all the previous PS collections that are on sale and still available, on our website go to Advanced Search, put in “PS Artbooks” under PUBLISHER, then sort the results by lowest price first. You’ll get the on-sale softcovers that begin at $9.95, then all the on-sale hardcovers, like The Heaps at just $14.95 each, to $19.95.

PS only did a handfull of titles in softcover—i.e. Phantom Lady and Harvey Horrors titles. None of these new sale books were done in softcover.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS THE THING Volume 1 -- Closeout Price! Collects #1-9, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. Foreword by Lawrence Watt-Evans. The extremely offbeat Charlton Comics Pre-Code horror title, featuring long-time DC Stalwart Dick Giordano. Lawrence Watt-Evans provides a lengthy introduction with an overview of the development of horror comics in the late 1940s through to the mid-1950s. This is one of the must-have titles outside the EC Horror canon--it pushed the envelope with stories of severed heads, headlights, and injury-to-eye. Issue #9 is in Seduction of the Innocent!...More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 5 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #11-15, 1948. Limited, 300! Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. Frankenstein in Prize Comics is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Our hero meets man-eating plants, green mold that comes to life, darkly sinister babes, crooks and hoodlums, and even actor Boris Karloff in an offbeat story. These are entirely looney storytelling, and it's really pretty fun stuff from the Golden Age of Comics. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually referred to as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel.....More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 6 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #16-21, 1948-52. Limited, 300! Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. Alright--now we get to the stories I like best. With issue #18, Frankenstein took a swing to the dark side. No more humor, it was now time for dark, gothic stories of mayhem and murder. Franky spares no one if he's po'ed or trying to protect anything from dumb critters to little girls, and the bad guys get done in in lovely pre-code fashion. Briefer tightens up his artwork to work in this pure horror vein, and these issues from now on are twisted and fun....More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 7 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #22-27, 1952-53. Limited, 300! Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer, with Mort Meskin and Marvin Stein. Now it's all horror all the time and Frank takes a dark, pre-code horror turn. Each issue also includes two back-up horror tales by artists Mort Meskin, Marvin Stein (several), and lots of unknowns. Poor Frankenstein, when he's not killing well-deserving bad guys, he also encounters mummy creatures and a wolfman, is frozen alive, is taken aboard a whaling ship, inadvertently makes friends with a grave-robbing ghoul, and finds an equally horrible mate, who of course he loses to a gun-toting mob....More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 8 Slipcased -- Closeout Price! Collects #28-33, 1954. Limited, 300! Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer, with Mort Meskin and Marvin Stein. While earlier issues were pure humor, here Frankenstein continues, and in fact concludes, its dark, sinister turn into pure horror. I particularly like these stories, as the mute monster relentlessly deals out harsh, final justice to anyone who wishes him ill. He also became a silent judge-and-jury when he finds others persecuted or wronged. Each issue also includes two back-up stories, horror tales typical of the horror comics genre before the code came along....More.

Mature Readers

Two new items this week. Taschen has released a new edition of La Petite Mort (“The Little Death”) which features real women doing, well, you know what. Each has total control over how she does it and what is photographed.

Long out of print has been the deluxe signed edition of R. Crumb’s Sex Obsessions. We have just one copy, published at $1000, our price $750. We also handle the recently published trade edition [RCRDH. $29.95].

News & Notes

Website Search
We've done some good tweaking and the search engine is doing the right job now on bringing up the most relevant titles first. However, if you use SORT (the little box that comes up after a search), and change it to LOWEST PRICE or NEWEST, that parameter will REMAIN that way for your next search.

So you last used the LOWEST PRICE sort, for example. Then you search for “Alex Raymond” and all kinds of strange things appear first. You need to change the SORT option to RELEVANT. You can also hit the up and down arrow right next to that box, to change MOST relevant to LEAST relevant. This arrow makes sense on Price (lowest/highest) or Newest/Oldest, but not so much on Relevance!!

ADVANCED SEARCH: if you can’t find what you want on a general search, use our advanced search option. Right now it’s at the bottom of every page, but we are going to also place it up at the top, on the CATEGORIES bar. Here you can search by almost any parameter: publisher, title, credits, date, etc. The general search does NOT search the item description—this brings up too many non-relevant hits. But you can search these using ADVANCED SEARCH to see more hits.

Just Arrived
Some customers are asking where our Just Arrived section went. We’ve made it a more reasonable size by breaking it down by each of the six categories which appear at the top of the home page. For example, click on ART & ILLUSTRATION and NEW ARRIVALS is the first option you see. Ditto for COMICS RELATED. The second option for each category is COMING SOON.

Overstreet Price Guide
I just reduced to half price this year’s Overstreet Price Guides, making them $15 and $17.50 in hardcover. That’s the Captain America cover, SC and HC [CB45C, CB45CH. $14.98, $17.50], and the Superman cover SC [CB45S. $14.95]. We have three or less of each one left. The new edition will be out in July, just after San Diego Comic-Con. We also have a couple left of last year’s Batman cover, hardcover, for $14.95 [CB44BH. Was $35]. See our website for more details.
Signed Copies
Gary Buckingham wrote the sequel story that is included only in the Deluxe edition of Tarzan: Return to Pal-Ul-Don [TARRPH. $65]. He just came by for a visit, and signed each one of the six copies we have on hand. He also signed the bookplate, along with primary author Will Murray and artist Joe Devito. Act now if you’d like one of these.
Mandrake the Magician Sundays Volume 1: 1935-37
I said wonderful things about it, wrote a special review, recommended it highly. And many of you jumped on it and ordered one. But our distributor could not fill our reorder, awaiting a new shipment from England! Arghhh! So there were no copies to ship! But now it’s back in stock, it’s still wonderful, and you can get one promptly should you choose. [MMS01H. $39.95, your price $34.95].

Signed Bookplates and Special Editions
We pride ourselves on having material that is hard to find elsewhere, that Amazon doesn’t handle, and that we add value to by including free signed bookplates. You can browse through these unique books by searching “signed bookplate” on our new website, which will bring up over 300 titles. Take a tour.
