MIKE VOSBURG'S LORI LOVECRAFT
Warehouse find, 2000. Recommended. By Pete Ventrella. Art by Mike Vosburg. Mike originally brought Lori to life back in the mid-seventies in a Star Reach comic book as a character called Linda Lovecraft: A Lovecraftian sorceress (hence the name) with tempting feminine wiles, often pictured nude or in very skimpy outfits, much like Kelly Green. When Mike revived Linda as Lori twenty years later with writer Pete Ventrella, she came right to life as a struggling actress in the cutthroat world of Hollywood, with a knack for getting herself involved with the supernatural and plenty of nefarious characters. HARMONY OF REFLECTED LIGHT The Photographs of Arthur Wesley Dow
Warehouse find, 2001. By James L. Enyeart. The author weaves 135 reproductions of Arthur Wesley Dow's (1857-1922) photographs with essays about the artist's personal and professional life, and a clear picture of Dow's contributions to early modernist photography develops as a result. Amazing period shots of The Grand Canyon, Dunes in Ipswitch, Temples in India, Japanese houses and many landscapes, most circa 1890s to 1911. Dow's interest in Japanese woodblocks and pictorialism (telling a story) is evident in this interesting collection of photographs. Museum of New Mexico Press, 2001...More.

THE ART OF DEAN CORNWELL New Printing
Limited, 1000! Our Highest Recommendation. By Daniel Zimmer. Originally released in late-2015 in a limited edition of only 1000 copies, The Art of Dean Cornwell sold out very quickly. If you missed out on the first printing, you may have seen them selling for big bucks in the after-market. After receiving numerous requests for a reprint, this is the result. This spectacular book explores the life and work of the "Dean of Illustrators." FULL COLOR throughout and entirely new. It's filled with beautiful illustrations reproduced almost exclusively from the original paintings and drawings. Illustrated Press, 2017. Due Apr. ...More.

Item Code: ARTDCH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 224pg, Full Color
$45.00

We're very pleased that we will be able to offer this again. The book is already printed and on the way to the publisher. I was dismayed when the first edition sold out so quickly, having brought in what I thought was a lot of copies. We could have used nearly twice as many, it quickly became evident. But Dan Zimmer has limited all his art books to just 1000 copies and they go fast. This is the first one that he has reprinted. Just in last week is his new Art of Jon Whitcomb [ARTJWH. $44.95], which is selling briskly.

Mature Readers

Three new photography books this week, two from European publisher Goliath: New Fashion Nudes features hip young models but in spontaneous, unscripted photos both indoor and out-of-doors. It’s a tribute to the more relaxed, casual snapshots that we all take, but in this case they're of stunningly beautiful women.

Next up is Super Pussy Parade. This is all about you know what, with groups of shots—double page spreads—on each beautiful subject. Very European, very upbeat.

Third is a new Roy Stuart offering, complete with an hour-long CD that continues, rather than parallels, the book. And the book is a narrative of sexual encounters, literally stories that take place over the space of several pages—from clothed encounters in the streets to erotic coupling behind closed doors.

See our website for more nude photography books, from publisher Goliath and elsewhere. For more innocent fare, see our Pin-Up art section.

News and Notes

Doc Savage Empire of Doom Deluxe Edition [DOCEODD. $65] , mentioned as due last week, is now in stock. The softcover (DOCEOD. $24.95) was listed last week.

Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Bibliography has been officially adopted by Heritage Auction Galleries as their guide to ERB editions. Here is their review of the book:

Review: by James Gannon, Director of Rare Books, Heritage Auctions
"A beautiful and important bibliography of more than 2,000 entries covering works by a major American author of the last century, profusely illustrated with excellent color reproductions of the pulps, books and dust jackets. The ERB Bibliography is an impressive production that includes a wealth of information beyond the first edition points, with numerous useful appendices and color photographs make it a joy to look at. The only problem is keeping our cataloging staff from fighting over who gets to use the bibliography first!"

We have both editions in stock, the standard [EDGBH. $100] and the deluxe leather edition, signed/limited, still available at $150 [EDGBD]. It’s limited to 375 copies.

Omar Rayyan’s Goblin Market
This was my first draft choice for the cover of our next Incredible Catalog. Thanks to Omar’s generosity in working with us, you’ll be seeing a fine piece from this on the cover. It may be ready for download by next week or not later than in two weeks. Both editions of Goblin Market, the regular at $35 [GOBMHS] and the one with a fine pencil drawing, each one different, at $85 [GOBMD], have been very popular. We sold out at both of the recent antiquarian book shows where we featured it.

As an interesting aside, the recent Art of Arthur Hughes [BOOPIH. $65] looks at this Pre-Raphaelite artist’s own relationship with the same author—Christina Rosetti, the sister of D.G. Rosetti, the most famous of the PRB artists. 150 years ago, Hughes didn’t illustrate Christina’s Goblin Market, but he did a follow-up book of hers, Speaking Likenesses.

I don’t have time to do a full review of The Art of Arthur Hughes—I’m still reading it. He enjoyed very close relationships with fellow Pre-Raphaelite artists and writers—he was one of the very few who turned away from painting to specialize in book and magazine illustration. It’s interesting that his career lasted over 50 years, until 1915. He’s most famous for his work for fantasy author George Macdonald, and for the best known Macdonald title, At the Back of the North Wind.

I’ve found it fascinating that an artist who began work in the 1860s, drawing on a woodblock for a wood engraver, would carry on to the modern era of photographic reproduction. Hughes was still doing fantasy work, now in pen and ink, contemporary with H.J. Ford, who is himself best known for the colored fairy books by Andrew Lang. Hughes’ work is every bit as fanciful and appealing for a similar line of books, post-1900, written by Grenville Macdonald, the son of George Macdonald—but pretty well forgotten today. However, At the Back of the North Wind has stayed in print most of the last 150 years, often with Hughes’ art.

Reginald Heade and Peter Driben
We’ve just arranged for two very exciting new books from England that will be here soon. First is a volume on paperback cover illustrator Reginald Heade. He was THE erotic pin-up artist for paperback and digest covers in England, over 300 to his name. This is the first collection of not only all that work, but a lot more material that is entirely new to us (and we are huge fans of his work). At least right now, we will be the only source of this in the United States. It will be $49.00.

Also from the same publisher is a book on pin-up artist Peter Driben. To date the only book of his work is Taschen’s Little Book of Pin-Up: Driben [LBDRI. $9.95] of course he is mentioned in the general pin-up collections from Taschen. This will be $39.95.
