ART OF REGINALD HEADE
Import from England. Our Highest Recommendation. By Stephen James Walker. Reginald Heade is renowned amongst vintage paperback fans and collectors as the pre-eminent British pulp fiction cover artist of the 1940s and 1950s. His beautifully-rendered, erotically-charged depictions of a parade of sexy, scantily-clad young virgins and vixens – the so-called "Heade Women", are near-legendary amongst lovers of classic pin-up art. This encompasses the famous Hank Janson novels, dozens of other outstanding pin-up style and erotic covers, plus his less-well-known but equally exceptional work for adult hardback fiction dustjackets, children's books and periodicals. Telos, 2017...More.

We just listed this as a coming item last week, but it showed up sooner than I anticipated. From the same British publisher is the excellent Titillation: The Vintage Pulp Magazine Pin-Up art of Peter Driben [TITIL. $39.95]. It was also announced last week, and came in the door too late to include the full listing here. We'll feature it next week.

THE SHADOW #116
Mox and Crime County. Recommended. By Walter B. Gibson. Art by Tom Lovell and Earl Mayan. The Knight of Darkness enlists a canine sleuth to ferret out hidden crime in one of Walter Gibson's greatest novels and its never-before-reprinted sequel. First, The Shadow's investigation of a bizarre series of murders by remote control leads to the mysterious mastermind hiding within the sinister house of "Mox." Then, the Dark Avenger returns to Mox's "Crime County" after its legendary lawman is wrongly imprisoned! Plus, a lost thriller, the complete script from Shadow Radio episode, "The Stockings Were Hung," from 1939. Sanctum, 2017...More.

BATMAN The Golden Age Omnibus Volume 3
Collects Detective Comics #75-91, Batman #16-25, and stories from World's Finest Comics #10-14. Highly Recommended. By Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Gardner Fox, Jerry Robinson et al. Dozens and dozens of stories from the early 1940s with very early appearances by the Penguin, the Joker, Two-Face and many other villains who would become regulars. These tales were written and illustrated by such luminaries as Bill Finger, Gardner Fox, Jerry Robinson, and more. This is vintage Batman, the stories that made him one of the most-loved comic book characters of the 1940s. For many readers, more than Superman. Wonderful iconic covers, great stories of brooding, dark battles in darkest night. DC, 2017...More.

Collects Weird Adventures #1, 1951, and Weird Thrillers # 1-5, 1951-1952. Highly Recommended. By Frank Giacola, Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson, Sy Barry et al. Sporting what must surely be one of the finest (albeit short) runs of painted covers, Ziff Davis's Weird Thrillers and the one-shot (numbered 10, go figure) Weird Adventures remain one of the field's most overlooked entries. Until now. Here also are Gene Colan, Bob Powell, Geroge Tuska, Bill Everett and Joe Kubert! These issues are in a class by themselves, as well as being some great sci-fi, fantasy and horror. FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 12
Collects #71-76, 1958-59. Highly Recommended. By Al Williamson, John Buscema, Paul Reinman, Ogden Whitney, Mike Roy, John Rosenberger et al. Six new issues, more than 20 stories by the fine writer Richard Hughes and a solid stable of artists, including EC's own Al Williamson. The comics code was the best thing to happen to ACG, as it meant better and longer stories, with more characterization, depth and highly original plots. From science fiction to fantasy to the  surreal--and that would be the very first appearance of Herbi, drawn by Ogden Whitney in #73. Lots of flying saucers and out of this world stories all still very readable today. PS Artbooks, 2017...More.

THE GLAMOR GIRLS OF DON FLOWERS
Closeout Price! Recommended. Edited by Alex Chun and Jacob Covey. When the life of Don Flowers was cut short in 1968, he left behind a career in newspaper cartooning that spanned more than four decades as well as one of the most fluid lines to grace the comics page. His cartoons evoked the art of Russell Patterson and Hank Ketcham, and nowhere was this more evident than in his quintessential single-panel pin-up cartoon, the aptly named "Glamor Girls": Whether blondes or brunettes, showgirls or housewives, Flowers rendered his comely protagonists with equal aplomb. WILLIE & JOE Back Home
Closeout Price! Recommended. By Bill Mauldin. Willie & Joe: Back Home brilliantly chronicles the struggles and disillusionments of these early postwar years and, in doing so, tells Bill Mauldin's own extraordinary story of his journey home to a wife he barely knew and a son he had only seen in pictures. The drawings capture the texture and feel, the warp and woof, of this confusing time: the ubiquitous hats and cigarettes, the domestic rubs, the rising fear of another war, and new conflicts over Civil Rights, civil liberties, and free speech. Fantagraphics, 2011...More.

Rare and Out of Print

Berni Wrightson A Look Back
Condition: Very Good (see below). A magnificent 359 pp monograph on the graphic and comic book artist Bernie Wrightson. Lavishly produced. Profusely illustrated in color. Book includes a special introduction by Harlan Ellison. For fans of this artist, it doesn't get much better. Note: This is an out of print, used and/or rare book. It is not as-new, in "mint" condition. There is a small small dent on the front corner at the spine top. On the back cover, there are some small indentations along the spine and a 2" scrape with a touch of soiling. The front cover is quite nice and unblemished. Other than these flaws, this is in fine condition. Underwood Miller, 1991. Out of Print....More.

We have just two copies of this as I write this.

This week we've started a new program: adding out of print and rare books on our website. As I've mentioned here often, my partner Anne and I have a separate business dealing in single-copies of rare books, such as the Wrightson book above. For a long time now, I've wanted to integrate those books with the new books we offer, so you can get a chance to see and buy these. We offer some of these online but we simply don't have enough time to list them all. Many we only bring to book fairs. I'm constantly buying these kinds of books, so here we finally have a way to offer them to our loyal customers.

To give you an advantage over the general public, we will NOT list these OP books online until several weeks after they have appeared on our website. You will have first chance to get these before they are gone.

Beginning shortly, we will add a new category at the top of our home page: Rare and Out of Print. We will keep inputting single copies (or, every so often, a couple copies) of books. These are not NEW and I want to make that very clear. These are used/rare books. I will describe the condition of each thoroughly, since it's rare to find such books in perfect, “mint” condition. The highest grade in the book world is generally Very Fine, followed by Fine, Very Good, Good and Fair.

I'm making an exception this week including a picture and the full description of A Look Back. Generally I will include just a title and a link to the website. Some may sell out immediately upon listing, so by the time I even write this they may be gone. Thus it isn't practical to include each book in its entirety here. As each one sells, we will take it off the site, so as not to be listing anything that's already gone.

Mature Readers

We have a fun new bargain-priced book this week, 50 Years of the Playboy Bunny. It’s a relatively classy look at these girls, in the clubs and mansions, and sometimes as featured nude in the pages of Playboy magaazine.

European publisher Goliath just gave us a one-time opportunity to pick up about 18 of their books at special discounts. This week we are listing four titles that we previously handled, at full price, now on sale. Watch Just Arrived or these emails over the next 2-3 weeks as we list the others. This week we feature Sweet Shaven Angels; Pretty Sexy Girls; Naked Dream Girls; and Hairy Pussy Beauties.

Back in stock are two titles that it took FOREVER for us to restock, Sweet 18 and Hot 19. These were out of stock for many months and we’ve just now been able to fill backorders. Act now if you want these, we might let them go rather than go through that again.

News and Notes

Wrightson’s Ghoul Treasury has gone out of print. We were able to score some of the last copies from the publisher, IDW, and they are on the way to us now. Ditto for Uncle Scrooge Timeless Tales Volume 2, this also went unexpectedly out of print.

Artist Daniel Merriam has opened a gallery just north of San Francisco. They’ve decided not to sell their collection Taking Reality by Surprise anymore, saving copies for their own sales. they are now asking $120 for it. But while they last, we have three copies left at the original price of $79.95.
