THE MOVIE ART OF SYD MEAD VISUAL FUTURIST
Highly Recommended. This represents the most extensive collection of Mead's visionary work ever printed, compiling hundreds of images, sketches and concept art from a career spanning almost 40 years, many of which have never been seen in print before. Each entry provides a unique insight into the processes involved in Mead's practice as well as illuminating the behind-the-scenes work involved in creating a fully realized, cinematic depiction of the future. PAPERBACKS FROM HELL The Twisted History of 70s and 80s Horror Fiction
By Grady Hendrix. Tour the horror paperback novels of the 1970s and 80s . . . if you dare. Page through dozens and dozens of amazing book covers featuring well-dressed skeletons, evil dolls, and knife-wielding killer crabs! Read shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary s Baby. It's an affectionate, nostalgic, and unflinchingly funny celebration of the horror fiction boom of two iconic decades, complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles. SHAMELESS ART 20th Century Genre and the Artists that Defined It

Unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated, genre art from the first half of the 20th century reflected the subconscious urges of an economically deprived and sexually depressed generation. 2018 Calendars

FAVOURITE FAIRY TALES BY JENNIE HARBOUR 2018 Calendar
Highly Recommended. A handsome, oversized calendar with twelve delicate line drawings by Jennie Harbour, an underappreciated artist from the Golden Age of illustration. This was published as a labor of love by a dedicated fan who produces occasional special projects like this. Probably not more than 200 copies will be produced in all, and not readily available from other sources. Harbour was a very skilled artist in her time, doing several fine children's books, but today she is known only to the most dedicated fans of the period. Calligraphics, 2017...More.

Item Code: FFT18
Wirebound, 18x12, 12pg, Two Color
$19.95

This special calendar--which is oversized and quite limited--came into our hands by odd circumstance. At the last Sacramento Book show, I was talking to one of the dealers and a gentleman came by and gave her a copy. We all talked about how obscure the artist was, I greatly admired what he had put together, and one thing led to another. Turns out this is a special project this long-time collector likes to put together, not for financial reward but just to have something cool for friends and the local bookstore or two. So unless you frequent Moe's books in Berkeley, this might be your one and only opportunity to snag this, as much a fine display of Harbour's artwork as it is a calendar. I like it.

CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION 2018 Calendar
Recommended. 1890 to 1925 was the Golden Age of Illustration. The finest artists were producing the best in children's and illustrated books, in England and in the U.S. Artists such as Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac designed the most fantastical, beautiful drawings to enhance stories that still enchant to this day. Here is a sampling of that fine work, a wide variety month by month. Catch, 2017...More.

Closeout Price! Recommended. Art by Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, Al Buell, Edward d'Ancona et al. This gift book--available in three striking cover options shipped to customers at random--offers flirtatious and fun 1940s and 50s illustrations. Irresistible pinup ladies bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. PIN-UPS 2018 Calendar
Highly Recommended. Instead of paintings by Elvgren and Petty, here are REAL ladies from the same time, the 1940s to the 1950s.  Just like they were posing for Vargas and others, they are smiling, voluptuous, sultry, and in period settings, with classic hair styles and, occasionally, nylons or lingerie. Mostly they are just fine looking sexy ladies from a lost era of more innocent cheesecake, proud of their appeal. We like this. Catch, 2017...More.

Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds is pretty darned cool, with full pages devoted to each and every girl from Marilyn Monroe to the latest. I grew up in the sixties, snagging these from my dad's bottom drawer, and it's certainly fun to see who I recognize.

Adult Movie Posters of the 60's and 70's takes a look at the emergence of x-rated movies from underground sleaze to films that couples went to together and television show hosts talked about, like Behind the Green Door, O, Emannuelle, and of course, the one that started all the talk, Deep Throat.

Artist Barbara Jenson's Bare It All signed edition sold out from us some time ago. But we just got six more copies, then it's gone for good. I think this is her first signed edition. It's also available in a regular edition [BARIT. $14.95].

We have three new calendars this week: Lingerie Provocative, Derrieres, and Naked, for 2018. Three images from each is on our website.

Holiday Bud Plant Catalog

Our latest catalog is the one we consider our Christmas edition. I know it seems very early,  but ordering from this will allow plenty of time to get those Christmas presents dialed in, particularly if you are overseas. Our last catalog of the year comes out in December, which is too late for foreign customers, and risky for anyone in the U.S., considering shipping takes longer and we just might be out of something special.

The catalog should be in your hands--if you are a regular customer--by October 10th or 15th. See the cover below--we've adapted it from Reynold Brown's new book, using his movie poster for Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Special features include my recommended Christmas gift ideas, Underwood Books Publisher File Copies, and all of the 2018 Calendars.

Heroes of the Home Front: Bell Features Artists of World War II

This Kickstarter program needs your support! We are fully supporting this upcoming book--I have already committed to 20 copies of the deluxe limited edition, of which there will be just 150, and the regular hardcover. But we'll only have these if the Kickstarter program is successful.

So I'm changing hats from being a retailer, who would like to sell you a copy of this--to altruistic collector, who wants to make sure this gets produced. I have supported every single project so far devoted to collecting and publicizing the WECA (War Economy Conservation Act) comics, also known as the Canadian Whites. These all-original comics were published between 1941 and 1947, the years in which the Canadian government cut off import of any and all U.S. Comics.

Unique characters like Nelvana, Queen of the Northern Lights, were created...and she pre-dates Wonder Woman! Brok Windsor is one of the best drawn titles of the time. Plus Captain Canuck, the Polka Dot Pirate, and Wow Comics #1. All these are on our website.

The author of this new book, Ivan Kocmarek, wrote an extensive and excellent overview of the period that was published in the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide 44 (2014-2015). If you have this, go check it out. Also, in the Overstreet Market Report for the last several years, dealers are noting the quickly escalating prices of these rare comics. About 800 issues were published--they are very comparable to the first few years of our own Golden Age, with heroes and heroines of all flavors, albeit in black and white instead of full color. Only in 1946 did a limited number of full color comics come along.

Read more about it, watch Ivan's video, and consider investing directly in the project, since there are several cool premiums. I signed up for one myself, the original issue of Grand Slam Comics. This just might need your support to come to fruition.

The Kickstarter program is here:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/283395337/heroes-of-the-home-front-book?ref=discovery

In case you'd like to order this direct from us rather than from Kickstarter, we've put in bare-bones descriptions of both editions onto our website and here is the link. The regular edition will be $75, the deluxe signed edition, limited to 150 copies, will be $100. For the deluxe edition, this is our pre-pub price--it may go up upon publication if we still have copies.

We will list these with more complete details later on. As always, your credit card will not be billed until we make our shipment to you. Publication date is February 2018.

~Bud
