DOC MACABRE TREASURY EDITION
Highly Recommended. By Steve Niles. Art by Bernie Wrightson. Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson combined their immense creative power to produce this suspenseful horror-science fiction epic! Brilliantly illustrated by Wrightson, the king of horror comics, this story is collected here for the first time in the over-sized IDW treasury format--in stunning black and white to showcase Wrightson's stellar work! It's a fun story too, with robots, a Transformers-style suit for Doc, the undead who are rising from their graves to Doc's consternation...all in the best Wrightson tradition. Very handsomely presented. IDW, 2017...More.

We love his nonchalant attitude towards going after demons, monsters...or having any sort of plan. He has a lot in common with Hellboy. This marks the long-awaited return of legendary Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka, with stunning art from Nicola Scott (Earth 2) and Liam Sharp (Gears of War)—one of the breakout hits of DC Rebirth. This series is a perfect jumping-on point into the world of Wonder Woman, and it's the first hardcover collection of the new Rebirth series! We're very impressed with the artwork, and the story ties nicely to the film, with Etta Candy, Steve Trevor, and Cheetah...and a return to Amazon Island. Also variant covers by Frank Cho and Nei Ruffino, and Jenny Frison. DC, 2017...More.

Classic Tomb of Dracula ushered in Marvel's glorious age of horror, while the black-and-white magazine Dracula Lives! delivered stories with real bite -- outside of the comics code. Both featured legendary creators, including Gene Colan in his prime, illustrating the Lord of Vampires! Dracula lives again! But his descendant, Frank Drake, joins vampire hunters including Rachel Van Helsing and Quincy Harker in a bid to return him to his grave! Watch the superb Gene Day channel Steranko on stories bursting with countless panels and cinematic storytelling, detail that never stops and innovative work. PRE-CODE CLASSICS ADVENTURES INTO DARKNESS Volume 1
Collects issues #5-9, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. By Alex Toth, George Tuska, Jerry Grandenetti, John Celardo, Ruben Moreira, Jack Katz et al. The covers alone are worth the price of admission -- three stories by Toth, Jerry Grandenetti, plus, for fans of DC's My Greatest Adventure, a beautifully drawn story by Ruben Moreira --very few pre-code comics come any better than this. The under-rated Ralph Mayo contributes too. More wild work by Jack Katz included two covers. Even a delightful little two-pager by Murphy Anderson. Really strong artwork on fun horror stories in the EC tradition. Standard Comics did not believe in #1 issues so this ten issue run begins with #5. PS Artbooks, 2017...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS FANTASTIC WORLDS/ LOST WORLDS Volume 1
Collects Lost Worlds #5-6, 1952-53, and Fantastic Worlds #5-7 1952. Highly Recommended. By Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson, John Celardo, Ross Andru et al. Marauding winged men, dishy dolls with back-packs and ray guns, blazing interplanetary rocket ships, and grumpy flora and fauna -- this one has it all! Outer space as it should be, courtesy of the greatest comic book writers and artists of the 1950s. Alex Toth does "Alice in Terrorland" and has stories in four of these five issues, plus a cover. A rare treat from Murphy Anderson! The complete run of both titles, since Standard liked to start their new titles with issue #5, and these had short but top-notch life-spans. Comparable to what was being done at EC and in Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space at DC, for both good art AND stories! PS Artbooks, 2017...More.

Four stories by Alex Toth plus a bunch by Mike Sekowsky, who was obviously influenced by Toth and was doing work so close sometimes it's hard to identify! Plus bizarre, over-the-top horror and beautiful women by Jack Katz, future Wonder Woman artist Ross Andru, fine work by George Roussos, Tarzan comic strip artist John Celardo. Plus we have a cannibalism story, a cool classic spider cover and more fun. SAMARIS The Obscure Cities
Highly Recommended. By Benoit Peeters. Art by Francois Schuiten. Magnificent artwork! The first in the Obscure Cities series, The Great Walls of Samaris was originally published in Europe in 1983 and in the US in 1987. The story has been slightly altered to include characters who appear later in the canon, and reveal Benoit Peeter's Kafkaesque storytelling prowess. Francois Schuiten's art in this edition has been reworked to be much truer to the originally intended color palette, and includes 32 additional pages of early Obscure Cities stories, comprising the Mysteries of Pâhry, never before published in English. THEORY OF THE GRAIN OF SAND
Highly Recommended. By Benoit Peeters and Francois Schuiten. The second book of award-winning The Obscure Cities series, follows The Leaning Girl (2014) but stands on its own. Brilliant artwork, superlative architectural details, and interesting characters are a highlight here. All drawn in style we've never before seen, with tinted pages and special highlights in pure white. We like it very much. Gholam Mortiza Khan comes to Brüsel to sell jewelry, but before the sale can be closed, Khan dies in an accident. Thus begin events sparking an investigation by Mary von Rathen that goes deep into the surreal. IDW, 2016...More.

Batman and Wonder Woman's quest to stop him will span the globe and the decades—from the time a 10-year-old Bruce Wayne faced the Nazi hordes, to the first full-fledged team-up between the heroes in 1966, to their reunion in the seventies, when Batman's former protégés Robin and Batgirl have taken over their mentor's war on crime. WILLIAM GIBSON'S ARCHANGEL
By William Gibson and Michael St. John Smith. Art by Butch Guice, Alejandro Barrionuevo, and Wagner Reis. Science Fiction superstar William Gibson's first graphic novel! The U.S. political leaders of 2016 abandon the radioactive planet they've destroyed and harness the power of humanity's last hope: The Splitter, a colossal machine designed to manufacture a bright new reality for them to infiltrate and corrupt--that will allow them to travel back into the past to entrench their hold on the future. With his characteristic grim sarcasm, Gibson takes us to war-torn 1945 Berlin, where RAF officer Naomi Givens must persevere against inconceivable, ruthless future forces, with the fates of epochs at stake. Modesty is in a jungle-girl leopardskin outfit, and with Willie is forced to become quarry in a big game hunt--playing for keeps in “The Killing Game”. With hundreds of images and insider insights, the book traces the birth of the Marvel Age heroes and adversaries, grounded in a world that readers recognized as close to their own; relatable characters with problems, struggles, and shortcomings. By the ‘70s, the House of Ideas also elevated horror, sword and sorcery, and martial arts into best-selling titles. CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH AND THE ART OF THE FOUR
Recommended. By Roger Billcliffe. This new work presents the most coherent story to date of this important group, concentrating on the entirety of their artistic imagery and output, far beyond the best known work of the 1890s, and charting the constantly changing relationships between the artists and their work. The Glasgow Style is the name given to the work they would help pioneer, as part of the young designers and architects working in Glasgow from 1890–1914. At its centre were four young friends who trained at Glasgow School of Art – Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Herbert MacNair, Margaret Macdonald and Frances Macdonald. Francis Lincoln, 2017...More.

KRAZY KAT 1934
Library of American Comics 8. Highly Recommended. By George Herriman. The year includes homages to old jokes and bricks, followed by playful references to sex, drink, and even drugs. The daily Krazy Kat strips are often Herriman's most personal works and standouts from this year include Krazy Kat's attempt to write a memoir and the Kat's quietly waiting for the last leaf of "ottim" to fall (a tender scene that finds echoes in Charles Schulz's drawing of Linus admiring the last autumn leaf's stubborn spirit). It could also be argued that the daily is more accessible to the new reader. IDW, 2016...More.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT 2018 Day-at-a-Time Calendar
Recommended. I like the page-a-day concept, new this year, which works great here. Every day you are treated to a new beautiful, young lady. All in sexy swimsuits, occasionally topless but with nipples discreetly hidden, nothing explicit. But the girls are fabulous and the settings, all on exotic beaches or rocky coastlines, are equally alluring. Just over 300 sexy but tasteful images. Entirely in full color. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT 2018 Calendar
Highly Recommended. The world's freshest models in ultra skimpy designer swimsuits and in exotic locations, from the ever-popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. This is where Heidi Klumm, Christie Brinkley and many other top models got their starts. It's a step above many more adult calendars, in that it's more about beauty and class than it is about come-hither looks and seduction. But these girls are still sizzling and amazing. Sun-lit beach or ocean backgrounds. Unique this year, each model is featured in TWO pictures, one centerfold style and the second a smaller different pose, next to the calendar grid. In a handsome slipcase! Recommended. Gil Elvgren's delightfully daring pinups -- 13 of his leading ladies caught in some rather precarious situations. At once naughty and nice, these take you back to a time when soft curls, bold curves, and unabashed femininity were in demand and on display. Spend a playful year getting to know each one of these gorgeous gals in all their glamorous glory. Each is done centerfold style, extending partially onto the grid page. And uniquely, the calendar with a different cover is in a full color slipcase with its own cover art (pictured here as the cover). Orange Circle, 2017...More.

JIM HEIMANN 20th Century Alcohol & Tobacco Ads
By Allison Silver, Steven Heller. Edited by Jim Heimann. Vices or virtues: drinking and smoking provided marketers with products to be forged into visual feasts. In this lush compendium of advertisements, we explore how depictions of these commodities spanned from the elegant to the offbeat, revealing how manufacturers seduced their customers throughout the 20th century to imbibe and inhale. PEANUTS EVERY SUNDAY Volume 5
Color Sunday Pages, 1971-75. Recommended. By Charles M. Schulz. Since their original publication, Peanuts Sundays have almost always been collected and reprinted in black and white. But many who read Peanuts in their original Sunday papers remain fond of the striking coloring, which makes for a surprisingly different reading experience. Peanuts Every Sunday: 1971-1975 has been scrupulously re-colored to match the original syndicate coloring, and these early 1970s strips showcase Schulz at his philosophical and illustrative peak. Writer/Editor Len Wein
(1948-2017) has just passed away. Len was the co-creator of Swamp Thing, as you see above in the new Omnibus, and he was a huge part of comics of the Bronze Age, in the 1970s-90s and beyond. He co-created Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm and Colossus and revitalized The X-Men. He was also the editor on The Watchman series. Len was part of the young new generation that came into comics in the seventies, creators like Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Berni Wrightson, Marv Wolfman, Paul Levitz, Denny O’Neill, Jim Starlin, John Byrne and so many others.

Len was writing comics all through my years of selling them. See much more about him on Wikipedia.
Last time I ran into Len was at the World Fantasy Convention in San Diego, where he was one of dozens of creators signing books on a Saturday night, the big event at that show. Things were quiet at his table, being a rare comics guy amongst fantasy and sci-fi writers...so I got to sit down and catch up with him. We’d only bumped into one another occasionally since the old Phil Seuling New York shows in the 1970s. He and buddy Marv Wolfman would come by my booth at San Diego Comic-Con and say hello. Len was a kid who grew up in the fifties and sixties loving comics--and got to live the dream.

Upcoming Comic and Book Shows

I’ll have a major exhibit in Sacramento this Sunday for the comic book show, Sac Comic-Con, Sunday, October 8th.

Coming up, we’ll also be exhibiting at the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair Saturday and Sunday October 14th and 15th.

The Fall Houston, Texas show that we usually do has been cancelled, but there will be a new one beginning next Spring and we will be there. And due to another trip we just made east, we’re going to take a pass this year on the Boston Antiquarian Book Show in November. Sorry to miss you folks this time, but we’ll be back next year.

Heroes of the Home Front, the book about Bell Features and the Canadian Whites of World War II, made its Kickstarter goal of $20,000! Thanks to anyone who helped out! We’ll formally announced both the books shortly, although you can pre-order them now for delivery in February. There will be around 500 to 750 copies printed of the regular hardcover edition; the deluxe is just 150 signed copies in slipcase.
