SALLY THE SLEUTH 1934-1953
Special Colour Edition with bonus pages. Highly Recommended. By Adolphe Barreaux. Foreword by Tim Hanley. From DC Comics' secret history. A fascinating new collection of Sally the Sleuth adventures culled from both comics and pulps published by Trojan, a silent arm of Donenfeld's DC Comics in the 1940s and early 50s. With 100 pages in full color! Sally the Sleuth was one of the naughtiest heroines of the golden age. She started in two- and four-page black & white "comic strips" in 1934-43 issues of Spicy Detective Stories, one of the most risque under-the-counter pulps. This collects 65 of those. Then she moved into slightly less sexy but still scandalous comic book stories in Crime Smashers #1-15, all of which are here, right up to 1953. Bedside Press, 2018...More.

CICADA
Recommended. By Shaun Tan. A new picture book, for all ages, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Arrival. Cicada tells the story of a hardworking little cicada who is completely unappreciated for what he does. He works in an office but clearly doesn't fit in well with his tiny size and his appetite for green leaves! But in the end, just when you think he's given up, he makes a transformation into something ineffably beautiful. A metaphor for growing up? A bit of inspiration for the unappreciated striver in all of us? Yes, yes, and more. Embossed cover. Athur A. Levine, 2019...More.

DC COMICS BEFORE SUPERMAN Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's Pulp Comics
Introduction by Jim Steranko. Highly Recommended. By Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson and Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson. The Major's granddaughter Nikki and noted comics historian Dave Armstrong have compiled an in-depth look at the formation of National Allied Publications, which would become DC Comics...and the man behind New Fun, New Comics, and more. That would be the Major. As a bonus, Armstrong has carefully sought out and scanned three extremely rare series from these impossible-to-find issues, all written by the Major. The complete run of Barry O'Neill and Fang Gow (art by the superlative Leo O'Mealia), Blood Pearls (art by the innovative and delightfully bizarre Munson Paddock), Foe of the Borgias (art- Sven Elven), The Golden Dragon (art- Tom Hickey) and more! This original compilation features more than 80 color plates selected from two of Phillips' early collections, A Gallery of Girls and A Young Man's Fancy, in addition to images from other sources. THE MAGIC BOOK
Highly Recommended. By Mike Caveney and Jim Steinmeyer. Edited by Noel Daniel. An amazing 850 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings as well as paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Caravaggio among others, The Big Book of Magic traces the history of magic as a performing art. Combining sensational images with incisive text, the book explores the evolution of the magician's craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century's Golden Age of Magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century's vaudevillians. MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN SUNDAYS Volume 1
1935-1937. The Hidden Kingdom of Murderers. Highly Recommended. By Lee Falk and Phil Davis. This unusual strip was the first to feature a magician. Unlike other adventurers, Mandrake used his illusionist skills and his head, rather than his fists. Artist Phil Davis's work is as good as Alex Raymond's from the same period, exhibiting a fine-line brush and beautiful girls as good as the master. I'm very excited to finally have this long-overdue collection of a superior, oft-neglected classic. Titan, 2016...More.

Lone Sloane by Druillet

LONE SLOANE SALAMMBO
Recommended. By Gustave Flaubert and Philippe Druillet. In the third century BC, mercenaries of Carthage rose against their rulers. And two barbarian clan chiefs, Matho and Narr'Havas, fell in love with the beautiful and ethereal Salammbo, daughter of Hamilcar of Carthage. Based on the 19th century novel by Flaubert, Salammbo is appropriated and recontextualised by Druillet in this masterwork of psychedelic metaphysical panorama. Mad battles and demonic warriors transpose the Punic Wars into Druillet's space fantasy universe. Oversized and lengthy. Titan Comics, 2018...More.
