WARREN TUFTS' COMPLETE LANCE 1955-1960
1955-60. Our Highest Recommendation. By Warren Tufts. Fans have been asking for this ever since I first began selling comics 50 years ago. Warren Tuft's masterpiece Lance includes the entire run of this magnificent comic strip in one volume with the Sundays in full glorious color! Each daily and Sunday has been beautifully restored by Manuel Caldas. Also included in this volume: an in-depth analysis of Tufts' work on Lance by Zoran Djukanovic, biographical information, and more! Tufts was actually emulating Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, right down to the lack of word balloons, an ironic narrator, and brilliantly designed artwork in every panel. This is one of the best Sunday adventure strips you will ever see. Classic Comics Press, 2018...More.

After filling backorders we only have seven copies on hand, but I just ordered more, having now seen the finished product. I cannot praise this enough, it's one of the most amazing adventure strips ever. After Tufts left Casey Ruggles in 1954, he set his sights on the finest adventure strip of his day, Hal Foster's Prince Valiant. Tufts gives us a similar capable young hero, a cavalry officer in the Arizona territory of 1834. And a Sunday page with mature stories and amazing art that does, indeed, compare favorably with Foster's classic. Comics historian Bill Blackbeard calls it "the best of the high adventure strips undertaken after the 1930s". I could swear that Russ Heath may have had an occasional hand in this, it's that good. I wonder...

AMERICAN COMIC BOOK CHRONICLES The 1990s
1990-1999. Highly Recommended. By Keith Dallas and Jason Sacks. This ambitious series covers every decade of comic book history from the 1940s to today. Here are all the pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes details of the decade when Marvel Comics sold 8.1 million copies of an issue of the X-Men, saw its superstar creators form their own company, Image, cloned Spider-Man...and went bankrupt. Superman died, Batman had his back broken, and the runaway success of Neil Gaiman's Sandman led to DC Comics' Vertigo line of adult comic books. It was the decade of gimmicky covers, skimpy costumes, and mega-crossovers. TwoMorrows, 2018...More.

PHILIP K. DICK A Comics Biography
Recommended. By Laurent Queyssi and Mauro Marchesi. One of the greatest writers in science fiction history, Philip K. Dick is mostly remembered for such works as The Man In the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? His dark, fascinating work centered on alternate universes and shifting realities in worlds often governed by monopolistic corporations and authoritarian governments. His own life story seems a tussle with reality, cycling through five marriages and becoming increasingly disjointed with fits of paranoia and hallucinations fueled by abuse of drugs meant to stabilize him. His dramatic story is presented unvarnished in this graphic novel biography, first published in France in 2017. NBM, 2018...More.

ROBERT SILVERBERG'S DOWNWARD TO THE EARTH
Highly Recommended. By Philippe Thirault. Art by Laura Zuccheri. An outstanding and very different graphic novel, that reminds us of Philip K. Dick's work. Based on Robert Silverberg's bestselling novel about the effects of interstellar colonialism and the quest for transcendence. Ex-lieutenant Eddie Gundersen returns to Belzagor, where he had left behind his youthful illusions, the love of his life and his shameful past as a colonizer. He finds the planet returned to its two intelligent species, the woman he left behind and another who has hired him to lead her and her husband to forbidden secret ceremonies. Moderate nudity. THE TOWER OF THE COMIC BOOK FREAKS
Recommended. By Ron Kasman. July 4, 1971. Five awkward, naive boys from Canada drive to New York City to attend the '71 comic art convention in search of love, sex, art, and comic books. What they encounter changes their lives forever. Visit a pivotal time as comics are just becoming an art form. Meet Jack Kirby and Bill Everett, art show judges! When a mysterious assassin guns down the beloved Lawgiver, tensions will reach a boiling point. Can one human solve the mystery of the Lawgiver's murder before war engulfs all of society? Collects #1-5, 2016. Recommended. By David Walker and Tim Seely. Art by Fernando Dagnino, Covers by Duncan Fegredo. Caesar's birth in the original Planet of the Apes films was a result of the time travel at the core of that story. Tim Seeley (Revival) and David Walker (Power Man and Iron Fist) relocate that birth to 19th century Africa, where Caesar crosses paths with Tarzan, leading to a much different fate for Man and Ape. Drawing from the Tarzan novels and the Planet of the Apes films, Caesar and the Lord of the Jungle experience the enslavement of the Apes, a century of war, travel and through the center of the earth! PLANET OF THE APES Visionaries
Reimagining of a sci-fi classic. Recommended. By By Rod Serling and Dana Gould. Art by Chad Lewis. Based on the original screenplay for Planet of the Apes by The Twilight Zone‘s Rod Serling. On the road to making the landmark science-fiction classic, 20th Century Fox commissioned Serling to adapt the source material. His first draft, which was drastically revised before filming, is a radically different vision of the franchise than the one the world has come to know and love. Now, for the first time in any medium, that vision is fully realized as a graphic novel adapted by acclaimed actor/comedian/writer Dana Gould (The Simpsons) and Chad Lewis (Avengers Origins). PS ARTBOOKS PRESENTS AUTHENTIC POLICE CASES Volume 1
Collects #6-10, 1948-50. Highly Recommended. By Matt Baker et al. Here's a new slant for PS Artbooks, PS Presents, a series of one-off volumes featuring one character or the best of one title, without necessarily collecting the entire run. First up is St. John's greatly under-rated Authentic Police Stories, featuring issues #6-10 of that title (1948-1950) which are packed with artwork and covers by Matt Baker. #6 has a SOTI Baker cover, "An Invitation to Learning," #7 includes a notorious Jack Cole story. Stories in #6 and #7 were used as samples of the bad comics influence by the New York Legislative Committee. And the continuing character Vic Flint also is here. PS Artbooks, 2019...More.

MATT BAKER The Art of Glamour
The life and career of the finest Good Girl artist of the Golden Age. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Jim Amash and Eric Nolen-Weathington. This presents an impressive career cut tragically short. It features a wealth of essays; interviews with Baker's friends, family, and co-workers; and a treasure trove of his finest artwork, including several complete stories, at last giving this wonderfully talented artist his full due. In the early 1940s, Matt Baker became of one the earliest African-American comic book artists. But it wasn't the color of his skin which made him such a significant figure in the history of the medium--it was his innate ability to draw gorgeous, exciting women and handsome, dynamic men in a fluid, graceful style. SILVER AGE CLASSICS TALES OF THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER Volume 1
Collects #1-5,1956-57. Highly Recommended. By Steve Ditko, Dick Giordano and Rocco Mastroserio. With issue #2 Ditko practically took over this title, and by #4 and 5 was doing it literally cover to cover, with 3-4 stories. Prelude to Doctor Strange? You be the judge. But Ditko fans find this pre-Marvel era still marvelous, as Ditko developed his unique style and gave us, in this case, one of his very few early continuing characters. A clear inspiration to the hugely popular Amazing Adult Fantasy and all those fun Lee & Ditko morality tales, The Mysterious Traveler is surely the original "adult" comic and the one that's still worth a deep read. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

This is a museum catalogue that accompanied a massive exhibition in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in the Fall of 2016. By the same Eisner Award-nominated team who created the gold-standard for museum catalogues: Woodwork: Wallace Wood 1927-1981, Flesh & Steel: The Art of Russ Heath, and Big John Buscema: Comics & Drawings. PRE-CODE CLASSICS HAND OF FATE Volume 1
Collects #8-12 (actually #1-5),1951-52. Recommended. By Lou Cameron, Mike Sekowsky, Ken Rice et al. I consider Ace a good step above most of the EC competitors. They offered offbeat stories tied together by the character "Fate," who provided narration. It's all about the living and the dead--and the undead, as well as getting what you shouldn't wish for, and the inevitable figure of death himself. This veritable sleeper from the Ace stable also includes work by Jim McLaughlin, Maurice Gutwirth, George Appel, Louis Zansky, Bill Molno, and Marvel's own Chic Stone. Cameron and McLaughllin were doing work worthy of EC in quality, especially in the later issues. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

Monsters, murder, the undead and aliens from the above creators plus Tony Tallarico, Tony Mortellero, DC war comics regular Jack Abel, Moe Marcus, Martin Rose, the very weird Paul Gattuso, and Don Perlinall under the tutelage of the notorious Stanley MorseWe have Kurtzman-esque horror in the EC tradition, a bondage cover, and an anti-Wertham editorial. Andru and Esposito team up for the covers of #1-4 plus a story in each issue. Mortellero delivers a classic good-girl cover for #5. PRE-CODE CLASSICS MISTER MYSTERY Volume 2
Collects issues #6-10, 1952-53. Recommended. By Bernard Baily, Basil Wolverton, Tony Mortellaro, Howard Nostrand, Ross Andru et al. Tiny comics publisher Stanley Morse wasn't trying to imitate the gore, shock and horror in EC comics--he was trying to outdo it! See for yourself. We have sexy women in a "classic" bondage/torture cover on #6; being buried alive on #7; faced with an explosive creature coming in through a port hole in #8; and a hook-handed grave robber menaced by floating creatures' heads--a classic by Bernard Baily--on issue #10. Also: "Brain Bats of Venus" and "Robot Woman"--rewritten and partially redrawn--both by Wolverton. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEB OF MYSTERY Volume 2
Collects #7-12 1952. Art by Charles Nicholas et al. Master artist Lou Cameron, who at his best compares with Frank Frazetta, is here in every single issue. It's also a tribute to these issues that several of the stories have been reprinted in numerous collections of the best stories from the fifties. Other contributors include Louis Zansky (several stories), Rocke Mastroserio (several stories, inking Lou Cameron), Jim McLaughlin (another fine but under-rated artist, on several stories), Bill Molno (two stories), Chic Stone (yes, two stories by Marvel's inker for Jack Kirby and others) and Ken Rice. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Ultimate Newspaper Comics Collection 1985-86 Volume 5
Two complete years! Recommended. By Stan Lee. Art by Fred Kida and Floro Dery. Daily Bugle writer Jenny Sue Saxon arrives and falls for Peter Parker while trying to become Spider-Man's biographer, even as Aunt May faces financial ruin in a very modern kind of bank heist. Mary Jane returns just in time to learn an important secret--and to introduce Peter to her Uncle Spencer. Spidey's reputation is under fire when he's accused of pushing drugs. And in a story that rivals the classic "drug issues" of Spider-Man, Stan Lee addresses one of the most heart-rending problems of modern times: child abuse. IDW, 2019. Due Feb. ...More.

BARBARA CARTLAND ROMANCES
Warehouse find, 1981. Recommended. By Charlotte Weaver. Art by Gray Morrow. An extremely scarce softcover collecting a newspaper strip that began in 1980, written first by Jim Lawrence (of British comics fame) and later by Weaver. But the biggest deal is the outstanding art by Gray Morrow. To our knowledge, this has never since been collected. Searching the internet, I could find hardly a copy, just a cheap 2012 knock-off. Stories include Love, Lords and Ladybirds; Bride to the King; The Treasure is Love; and Chieftain Without a Heart. A beautiful runaway, an arranged marriage, a hidden family treasure, and the reluctant chieftain of a Scottish clan. News and Notes

We were all set to offer you a new printing of Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil. This was to collect every chapter of the serial from the original Captain Marvel issues in the 1940s. But due to questionable content (wartime stereotypes), DC has decided to cancel it, at least for now. Too bad. It's a lot of fun, and the British printing now sells in the $300-$400 range.

Tom Lovell and Raphael DeSoto will be the next two art books to appear from Illustrated Press. The former in March, the latter later on in 2019. We'll formally announce them soon.
