FANTASTIC WORLDS The Art of William Stout Deluxe
Signed, numbered, limited, 295! Highly Recommended. By William Stout. Enormous heavy white clamshell slipcase with a color illustration on the front, black and white works on four sides (it's almost 3 inches deep). Swing open the cover to reveal  within, secured with bands in the cover on the left,  a special oversized hardcover portfolio, unique to this edition. Open that to find the limitation plate tipped in, with a full color image describing the contents, signed by Bill and numbered from 295. This also encloses four rare art prints which indeed look new to us (nicely detailed and in full color)--each printed on beautiful thick art paper, perfect for mounting. Nestled in the box on the right side is the hardcover art book itself, in a special jet black cloth binding with silver embossed titles front and spine. Lift that out to reveal a bonus unique 32-page 7x11 "comic book" with a new 2018 cover, a 1989 story by Harvey Kurtzman and Stout to start, then many more published and unpublished strips and works, most in full color, printed on very high quality stock. WALT AND SKEEZIX Volume 7 1933-1934
Highly Recommended. By Frank King. This new volume in the long-running series opens amid tough times, as the Depression grinds into its fourth year. Against this setting, a con artist sets up a storefront in town and ropes Walt and the Gasoline Alley gang into the scheme. The lean economic climate motivates young Skeezix and his friends to find inventive ways to earn money, although not always with the intended results. Frank King was one of the pioneering masters of cartooning, and this serves as a fascinating historical document of early- to mid-twentieth-century American life. And also funny, poignant and endearing stories, some of the finest of the times. Drawn & Quarterly, 2019. Due Apr. ...More.

CREEPY ARCHIVES Volume 28
Collects #134-139, 1982. Recommended. By Bill DuBay, Archie Goodwin, Al Williamson, Alex Toth et al. A mosaic of morbid mayhem: bloodthirsty bats, cultured cannibals, homicidal honeymooners, murderous mummies, and starving psychopaths! Featuring deadly dramas by a cavalcade of comics' finest creators--including Rudy Nebres, Sanjulian, Salvador, Auraleon, Peter Hsu, Steve Gan, Val Mayerik and covers by Ken Kelly and Nebres. #137 and #139 are all-reprint Al Williamson and Alex Toth issues. Dark Horse policy is they don't include reprints of stories already done earlier in the Creepy archives series. This is probably why this collects more issues than we usually see in one book. Dark Horse, 2019. Due Apr. ...More.

EC ARCHIVES Two-Fisted Tales Volume 4
Collects #36-41, the final issues, 1954-55. Our Highest Recommendation. By Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Colin Dawkins et al. Art by Jack Davis, Reed Crandall et al. As these final issues were produced, editor Harvey Kurtzman turned over the reins to artist John Severin. Stories moved away from WWII and the Korean war and turned to adventure including western frontier tales with Indians and gunslingers. Severin took over doing cover art and many of the stories inside, though in #41 we have a wonderful biography of big game hunter Carl Akeley by Wally Wood. Plus work by George Evans, Davis, Krigstein and Crandall, revealing yet another facet of EC's fine innovation. Dark Horse, 2019. Due Apr. ...More.

VAMPIRELLA JOSE GONZALES Door Poster Hurt
Limited, 500. We were excited when we saw they were redoing the fabulous door-sized poster of Vampi that Warren did back in 1972. But what we got looked like they'd been done a while back and then badly stored so that they all ended up with creases, like you'd have with a rolled poster that got slightly flattened--not totally flat, but squashed somewhat.. So we refused to sell these as they were, and now offer them as-is with a full understanding of what you are getting! The original edition on Amazon starts at $199! We found more copies at $350 and $500! Dynamite, 2018. . Note: These are wavy and creased (though not completely flat) due to being stored rolled up with something squeezing them....More.

KREMOS The Lost Art of Niso Ramponi Volume 1
Warehouse find, 2015. Recommended. Although Ramponi worked under numerous names--Kremos, Niso, Nys O'Ramp--he occupies a singular space as Italy's premiere pin-up cartoonist. From the mid-1940s through the early 1960s, Ramponi's work was everywhere. Here is his first-ever collection, covering the cartoonist, pin-up artist and animator's entire career. A decade in the making, packed with never-before-reprinted art. His earliest work reminds us of Russell Patterson, while later on he is very much in the style of Jack Cole. We like his work a lot. Giger, and past masters of the grotesque like Goya. Yet his work is inimitably his own, from the noirish lighting, off-kilter angles, and kinetic sense of movement to his singular technique of starting a project with oils and then scanning it into a computer to add more startling visual effects. Pros and (Comic) Cons

Dark Horse is doing this book of stories from comics professionals about their varied and often zany adventures at comic book conventions. Editor Hope Nicholson invited me to contribute. I wrote up a 4000-word story of my buddies’  and my adventures driving first to the Oklahoma City Con  and on to the New York Comic Art Convention, in 1970, the first of many cross-country trips. I’ll be handling the book and will sign copies—it’s due this spring. I wrote a couple versions of a short bio for the endnotes, and thought I’d share this one that I didn’t use:

At the age of nine, Bud Plant was vying with two older sisters over who would be first to read the new issue of Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories—his folks had a subscription circa 1959-60 to those glorious Carl Barks issues. Next it was Sgt. Rock and ten cent DC comics, like the first Kubert Hawkman in The Brave and the Bold. And Strange Adventures. And like a lightening bolt, Fantastic Four #1, which quickly disappeared.

But it was in early 1964 when Marvel cinched the deal and began a lifetime addiction. Bud found Spider-Man #13, Daredevil #2, and Fantastic Four #27, and the rest of their June 1964 releases. From then on it was every Marvel, every month. After two short-lived comic stores in 1968 and 1969, his present day occupation began with ads in fanzines like The Rocket’s Blast and the brand new Comics Buyer’s Guide--and setting up a table at comic-cons, selling underground comics and fanzines to fellow collectors, and one page fliers that quickly became several pages, then mini-catalogs. And of course all profits were spent on back issues of EC, Atlas, Quality, Marvel. He issues catalogs and sells online as  Bud Plant Comic Art/Bud’s Art Books in Grass Valley, California.

“Hero” ads

The rectangular, changing ads that you see on our website home page are called “Heros.” Don’t ask me why, they just are. We use these to promote new items but also to tie into other related items or genres, such as books by one artist, ERB books, PS Art books, EC Archives, etc. You’ll find one of these up above, promoting the upcoming John Carter of Mars book along with other titles from the same publisher.

We started putting them into this email as well and we liked it so much, we’re going to create a new one most weeks to start this email out. Since this week’s is about a coming item, we didn’t do that, but most weeks we will. You can click on the ad itself and it will take you to all the related items on our website.

2019 Calendars – going, going, gone

We put a few that were overstocked on sale in the latest clearance sale (Virgil Finlay, Vintage DC, Gustave Dore, Beach Babes and The Hot List)...but our annual sale won’t begin until February, and we don’t expect to have very many titles left by then. We’re still selling many at regular price, and we have very small quantities left on a good many. Click here for all titles left.
