Sanjulian, new Illustration Magazine, Arthur Adams Sketchbook, Justice League, Hogan’s Alley, Detective Comics 80 Years of Batman and more!

Important new books this week: Sanjulian gets my highest recommendation; a new Illustration Magazine; and the long-awaited Arthur Adams Sketchbook. I like the Justice League: The Last Age of Magic, a new Hogan's Alley is always a treat; Detective Comics 80 Years is an unusual and nicely eclectic collection; Promethea brings back one of the all-time beautiful comic series; Vei is another delight, a Swedish graphic novel; and the Marx Brothers meet Dali!

Don't miss the new catalog, Lance cover, now downloadable, pictured down below—printed version in your hands early in April.

SANJULIAN MASTER OF FANTASY ART Hardcover Signed
Almost Gone! Signed bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. By Sanjulian. Introduction by Joe Jusko. A stunningly beautiful new art book, done as a Kickstarter project and unlikely to be available in most outlets. To quote from Joe Jusko's introduction:" ...Sanjulian's work has elevated him to my Mount Olympus of fantasy artists. There are many talented painters scaling the cliffs, but it's a mythic summit that very few have ever reached. Frank Frazetta, James Bama, Boris Vallejo and Jeffrey Jones are several whose membership cannot be denied, and Sanjulian unquestionably stands right there amongst them." Collected here is his finest work, including countless private commissions never before collected. Conan, Vampirella, nudes, covers for Creepy, Eerie & Famous Monsters, it just does not stop! Many surprises. Much of this we've never seen before. BIG WOW!, 2019...More.

As mentioned in the description, this Sanjulian book was a Kickstarter project. We didn't know that our initial order was all that we are going to get—thank goodness I ordered up, but now wish I had more. Some copies came in with minor corner dents. But since we can't replace them, we will fill orders with these once the perfect copies are gone. ‘Nuff said.

We are also getting a signed bookplate from the publisher, but it has not arrived yet. We will ship the book out right away, and send the bookplate separately upon arrival.

ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #63
Highly Recommended. Art by E.M. Jackson, Mario Cooper and Frederic Remington. Featuring the work of E.M. A second feature examines another magazine illustrator, Mario Cooper, known for his watercolor and dye illustrations for fiction featured in Collier's, American Weekly, and other major titles. Finally, "The Demise of the 'Frontier' and the Birth of the 'New West' " looks at early American artists of the Western frontier, focused here on Remington and Charles Russell. CHAM The Best Comic Strips and Graphic Novelettes 1839-1862
A massive eight pound, oversized volume. Recommended. By David Kunzle. Cham, real name Count Amédée de Noé, a serious rival to Daumier, is a célèbre inconnu, a famous unknown. Two caricaturists dominated the emerging field of the French comic strip from the 1830s onward: Rodolphe Töpffer and the Parisian Cham. The undisputed father of the modern comic strip or graphic novel, Töpffer denigrated his “little follies,” as he called them. Cham, by contrast, quickly became a dominant figure in the French premier magazine of graphic satire, Le Charivari. He engaged full-time in all the major caricature formats then practiced, creating 40 comic strips or graphic novelettes, published in albums and magazine installments. News and Notes

John Carter of Mars

Last week we got our links mixed up, and the set of two books did not take you to the set. The two variant books are available individually, and here you can get both, with the coin, and save $20.

The Iliad in Softcover

I also neglected to mention we will have a softcover version of The Iliad [ILIA. $16.99 $15.50] available, but we're still waiting for it to come in. Here is a link to both. The hardcover is [ILIAH. $27.99 $25.99]. I just finished reading this—it's quite the highly detailed work, with good characterization. The story of the final year of the Trojan/Greek Ten Year War, the siege on Troy because Paris walked off with Helen. The portrait of the veteran Odysseus and hot-tempered young Achilles, the two Ajaxes, Helen, Menelaus, Nestor, Patroclus (the doomed), etc. Educational and a fun read.

Sac-Con Report

Pictures and my personal report are now posted on Facebook. I forgot to mention that I had a delightful dinner during Comic Fest in San Diego, with publisher John Fleskes and Mark Schultz. Mark is working on a stand-alone Xenozoic Tales graphic novel but he says it's still about a year and a half away. Look to see some interesting new items coming from Flesk—their latest, Pastoral, is quite a nice book. And the Brom new edition with a new cover, at a new lower price of [ARBRPHS. $29.95] (it was $50), is kind of a sleeper. It sells whenever folks see it at shows we do. Click here for other Brom books in stock.
