CARTHAGO
Highly Recommended. By Christophe Bec. Art by Eric Henninot and Milan Jovanovic. A complex and highly entertaining story, collected all in one from a series of six French graphic novels. We found this a page-turner, with good characters we want to know more about, a large cast of them, and intertwining stories that start years ago and come together in the present day. It starts out about a megalodon, the prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark that was the most ferocious predator of the seas, an 80 foot killing machine long extinct. But when divers drilling in an underwater cave are attacked by this living fossil, oceanographer Kim Melville discovers that this creature may not only have survived, but thrived, and is reclaiming its place at the top of the food chain. D-Day. 182 members of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division parachute into the French countryside--a full eighteen miles southeast of their intended target. An original graphic novel from DC/Vertigo, the true story of a World War II battle that took place in the small village of Graignes, France for six days and the people survived to tell the tale, and those who didn't. The author's uncle was in the battle, so this is a personal, intimate look at the unit parachuting in, digging in, getting food and aid from the French townspeople, and the eventual battle against overwhelming odds, since they were far behind German lines. From here he went on to a 44-year career with Mad Magazine, beginning in 1957. The first issue of this was Horror from the Tomb.
