American Comic Book Chronicles 1940-45, Illustration Magazine #65, new sketchbooks and a visit from Elvira!

Coles Philips is the cover feature in the latest Illustration Magazine—a talent long overdue for good coverage. I LOVE the new American Comic Book Chronicles that looks at 1940-45. It brings together new information, obscure publishers, titles and characters, and puts the industry in perspective during its most popular years. Plus: great new sketchbooks and more cool books too numerous to mention here.

Our White Sale email went out Tuesday evening and has already kept us very busy. We shipped out well over 100 orders today, Wednesday, as I write this! Everything is still available (I think) including several free items--except the free Shadow will be gone by the time you read this. Best sellers so far: Pherone, Ax, Brian Bolland, USS Stevens, and Frazetta's Telling Stories. Click here to see all the White Sale items on our site.

ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #65
Our Highest Recommendation.Art by Coles Phillips and Aidan Lassell Ripley. Featuring the work of Coles Phillips, the legendary designer and magazine cover artist known for his creation of the "Fade-Away Girl"; this issue showcases numerous examples of his original art, printed tear sheets, and rare photographs. Next up is Aiden Ripley a frequent cover artist for the legendary pulp magazine, Adventure, in the 1920s and 30s, inspired by Howard Pyle. He went on to a prolific career in sports illustration. AMERICAN COMIC BOOK CHRONICLES The 1940s: 1940-1944
Outstanding, exceptionally thorough and well-written, with new information. Our Highest Recommendation. By Kurt F. Mitchell with Roy Thomas. Art by Jack Kirby, Mac Raboy, Reed Crandall, Will Eisner, Lou Fine et al. I love this book. It's taken me two nights just to get to page 32--it's that detailed and dense--and I'm already learning new details about a period I find fascinating. This is the earliest days of comics--its origins. Mitchell starts in 1934, even touching on the pulps, magazines and radio, and tells how comics came to dominate popular culture. Here's the inside story of the "shops," the eccentric publishers, the trials and errors of the early days. The great editors, the young spunky creators, And then year by year, starting in 1940, what was happening throughout the comics world during its meteoric rise to being part of nearly every kid's world. TwoMorrows, 2019...More.

MARY BLAIR'S UNIQUE FLAIR
The Girl Who Became One of the Disney Legends Recommended. By Amy Nevesky. Art by Brittney Lee. A lovely children's picture book celebrating the career of Disney's most famous female creator. Even as a child, Mary Blair loved color, and all she wanted to do was to make art. But becoming an artist wasn't easy. Mary worked hard to enter contests and earn a spot at a school for the arts. She even had to work hard to find her place at the Walt Disney Studios. When she joined Walt's trip to South America, Mary had never seen such color. She collected that color and used it in her concept art for Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, and even the It's a Small World attraction at Disneyland. Disney Press, 2019...More.

News and Notes

Mead Schaeffer, Enoch Bolles

Illustrated Press has announced these as their next The Art of books, due in the next few months. Allen Anderson was released last week, Rafael Desoto just a few weeks ago. They report that previous titles are starting to get low in stock, but as of now these are still available: Giorgi, Tom Lovell, Coby Whitmore, Harry Anderson, Shannon Stirnweiss, Reynold Brown.

The Art of Allen Anderson

Last week I was out of town, so we had only the cover art and a very minimal description on the website. This is a very, very good book by an artist so good, he's often confused with Kelly Freas (with his pulp covers) or Norman Saunders (for his pulp AND painted comic book covers!). Check him out. I added to and rewrote the description and recommendation to reflect this.

From ERB Books

These folks are doing the “new” Grosset & Dunlap (G&D) editions that were actually never done by G&D, with loads of added illustrations and features. Savage Pellucidar is now out of print—we are out of the Grindberg cover, but have three left of the Eggleton in slipcase [SAVPEH. $120].

He's down to 25 left of the most recent release, John Carter of Mars. We still have two volume sets and both individual volumes.

Next up: The Princess of Mars Manuscript Edition will be done in an all-out, loaded-with-extras edition for $199. We'll officially announce it shortly, probably next week. It's already 2/3's sold out, limited to 500 copies with new illustrations by four artists, in a traycase.
