SHAME TRILOGY

ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #72
Our Highest Recommendation. Featuring the work of Frank Fruzyna, best known for his thousands of clip-art illustrations (but that does him a disservice) — here is fine art, magnificent black & white (and some color) work by an artist entirely new to us. Next David Saunders writes & pictures the magazine and pulp cover art of C. Calvert Beall. Finally, Mike Ludlow's beautiful women are featured from his long magazine illustration career. Illustrated Press, 2021....More.

Item Code: IL72
Magazine, 9x11, 80pg, Partial Color

Even recent issues have been selling out. Here’s our full list, including out of print issues.

THE DYNAMITE ART OF JOHN CASSADAY
Highly Recommended. John Cassaday's dynamic compositions are well known, but this is the very first time they've been collected — and in an oversized, handsome hardcover. Here you will find all of his work for Dynamite in a single book: covers, sketches, inks, some seen before, others appearing in print for the first time. Here are his amazing interpretations of James Bond, The Spider, Dracula, Buck Rogers, Red Sonja, The Green Hornet, Sherlock Holmes, Zorro, The Lone Ranger and many, many others! Dynamite, 2020....More.

TRAVELERS
Recommended. Introduction by Kimberly Power. Aron Wiesenfeld, a former WildStorm and Marvel artist, has been creating works of fine art since the early 2000's. This is a selected collection of his latest pieces. His compositions reflect his early work as a comic book illustrator and are infused with romanticism and mystery. While men and boys make occasional cameos, his works are usually centered upon ethereal and mysterious young women and girls, often isolated in rural and natural landscapes or in deserted city streets. Clover Press, 2021....More.

Item Code: TRAVH
Hard Cover, 10x10, 112pg, Full Color
$45.00 $39.95

A BRUSH WITH DEPTH The Art of Rick Sealock
By Rick Sealock and Christina Vester. Rick Sealock has been creating wild and wacky illustrations for clients as varied as Rolling Stone, Texas Monthly, The Washington Post, Natural Health Magazine, and GQ Magazine. His work has been used to skewer politicians, fitness fanatics, and death. This book, while a retrospective of his life in illustration, is also a how-to guide. How to keep your work fresh. How to deal with pesky and not so pesky clients. How to keep yourself in front of those clients. Packed with personal commentary on most of the pieces, which are MANY. Frontenac House, 2020....More.

JAZZ COVERS
By Joaquim Paulo. Part design history, part trip down musical memory lane, this anthology of jazz album artwork is a treasure trove of creative and cultural inspiration. Spanning half a century, it assembles the most daring and dynamic jazz cover designs that helped make and shape not only a musical genre but also a particular way of experiencing life. And from Charley Parker and Chet Baker, to Fred Cohen, Ashly Kahn, Bob Ciano, Michael Cuscuna, Rudy Van Gelder and Creed Taylor (and these are just the artists who are interviewed here), this covers the entire field. Ed Brubaker

FRIEND OF THE DEVIL A Reckless Book
Highly Recommended. Second of three new, original graphic novels. Bestselling crime noir masters Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are back with a new original graphic novel (actually, a series of THREE!) featuring troublemaker-for-hire Ethan Reckless. It's 1985, and things in Ethan's life are going pretty well...until a missing woman shows up in the background of an old B-movie, and Ethan is drawn into Hollywood's secret occult underbelly as he hunts for her among the wreckage of the wild days of the '70s, including his own. Image Comics, 2021. ...More.

Item Code: FRIEH
Hard Cover, 7x10, 144pg, Full Color
$24.99 $21.99
This is the second volume in the series; the first, just called Reckless, just came in too late to include here. But you can order it [RECKH. $24.99, $21.99]. Full details next week. I really liked the Friend of the Devil and have yet to read a Brubacker story I didn’t really enjoy. A third volume has been announced. Also by Brubaker: Criminal Vols 1-3 are all now available, Pulp, Captain America Omnibus, and Scene of the Crime. See them on our website.

From humble beginnings in Tuskegee, each pilot will live or die in the deadly skies above Germany. Not only instrumental against the Nazi war machine, but these heroes had to deal with everyday bigotry amongst fellow soldiers as well as civilians at home. Aftershock, 2021....More.

SCOOP SCUTTLE AND HIS PALS The Crackpot Comics of Basil Wolverton
Highly Recommended. Mad magazine cartoonist Basil Wolverton's warped imagination combines with his outlandishly wacky visual humor in these delightful ultra-rare treasures: series Scoop Scuttle, Mystic Moot, Bingbang Buster, and Jumpin' Jupiter — as they've never been seen before! Rock-bottom printing methods of ten-cent comic books meant Wolverton's intricate line work was routinely obscured and obliterated. Here every effort has been made to restore the art to its original splendor — at last we have the uniquely detailed graphics of this justly revered comic book master. Fantagraphics, 2021.  ...More.

Item Code: SCOSC
Soft Cover, 8x10, 192pg, Full Color
$29.99 $26.99
The Life and Comics of Basil Wolverton both remain available: Creeping Death from Neptune (Volume 1) and Brain Bats of Venus (Vol 2), at $34.99 and $39.99 respectively. They both get my Highest Recommendation; you really should not miss either one. See more Wolverton here: Foopgoop Frolics (RB942. $150], PS Artbooks collections, his Weird Worlds Artist’s Edition and more!

FABLES COMPENDIUM TWO
Collects Fables #42-82, 2006-09. Recommended. By Bill Willingham, art by Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha, Andrew Pepoy, James Jean et al. Second of four compendiums. Eisner-award winning series. Another enormous collection which begins with "Arabian Nights (and Days)", when foreigners start showing up in Fabletown — much to the dismay of longtime residents — plunging Fabletown into a culture clash of dire proportions! Prince Charming is in over his head and must call on the help of a Fable character not seen in these pages for far too long...and this is one wish he can't take back. DC Comics, 2021. ...More.

$59.99 $49.99
Fables Volume 1 is available at the same discounted price [FABL01H]. And it’s huge, too!

Classic Comics Press, 2020....More.

Leaving the orphanage, Rusty is hired by wealthy racehorse owner Mr. Miles in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Soon Rusty is thrust into the world of horse racing—as well as danger, lost treasure, criminals, and a beautiful comrade! Introduction by Howard Chaykin, interview with Frank Godwin' s daughter Diane, plus a number of Godwin illustrations covering the span of his long and productive career, several in full glorious color! Classic Comics Press, 2013....More.

Item Code: RR01H
Hard Cover, 8x10, 344pg, Partial Color
$49.95 $19.95
Volume 1 is only on sale because Classic Comics Press was forced to move and he had to clear out his backlist. You win. See much more from them, most sale-priced, on our website: Cisco Kid (written by the same Rod Reed who writes Rusty Riley), Buck O’Rue, Stan Drake’s Heart of Juliet Jones, Leonard Starr’s Mary Perkins on Stage, Casey Ruggles, Dondi (a set of two), and my very favorite, Warren Tuft’s Lance.

News & Notes

Flesk News:

They’ve received their advance copies of the book on Edwin Austin Abbey, a new collection on Frank Cho, a new printing of Bruce Timm’s The Big Tease, and new Gary Gianni. We’ll let you know more as they wind their way here from the far east.

Meanwhile, we’d run out of the Al Williamson Publisher Special Edition Hardcover last week. But Flesk let us have a few more copies, the last we will see, so we filled backorders and still have some left. Act now, this is your last chance to get it from us.

The Al Williamson softcover is low in stock but we hope to have it for a while. Reminder: three more Al Williamson collections are planned, so get on board now.

Carbon 4 in the signed hardcover is also now out of print; our supply is limited but will last a bit longer. The softcover remains available.

Xenozoic Signed Hardcover is running out and we can’t get a restock on it. The softcover is also low in stock. I don’t expect we’ll see reprints of any of these. John says he wishes he’d printed more, demand has outstripped his supply.

Vanguard News

The Frazetta Sketchbooks have gone out of print and will not be reprinted. We have a handful of each left. The Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta is going back to press for a third time; we still have the 2nd printing of the hardcover, and the Deluxe Edition, which we are told will probably not see another printing. The Sensuous Frazetta is also going back to press…we have just a few of the original edition left.

Omnibus outtages

We’ve experienced delays getting several of the huge Omnibus volumes lately; both one regularly stocked and a couple that we do as special order. It’s unclear if our network will get us more copies, but for now we’ll be keeping your orders on hand and will let you know if we learn more. So…if we take longer than 3-4 weeks to fill your backorder or special order for one of these big volumes, this is why. We currently don’t have an automatic way to keep you updated on delays, except in this email.

Other News

Dark Shadows #1 is now out of print…we have just five left. Books 2-6 are all still available [DARS01, etc. $14.99 ea].

The Collected Toppi – all five now available, and a sixth is coming in soon [COLT01H, COLT02H, etc. $24.99 ea].

Heavy Metal update: 299, 300 and 302 are being reprinted. We have never listed #302 as we never got our original shipment. #300, 299 and 298 are on backorder, we hope to them soon. #304 has also never been listed, because all our copies came in badly damaged; replacements are supposed to be coming shortly.

Exhibits note from Illustration Mag #72

Enchanted: A History of Fantasy Illustration is a superlative book based on an exhibit that was delayed due to the virus. It’s now opening June 12 and runs to October 31, 2021 at the Norman Rockwell Museum. I plan to attend; the last exhibit like this I would not have missed for the world. I hope you can also [ENCHFH. $45, $39.95].
