|ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #72 |
Our Highest Recommendation. Featuring the work of Frank Fruzyna, best known for his thousands of clip-art illustrations (but that does him a disservice) — here is fine art, magnificent black & white (and some color) work by an artist entirely new to us. Next David Saunders writes & pictures the magazine and pulp cover art of C. Calvert Beall. Finally, Mike Ludlow's beautiful women are featured from his long magazine illustration career. |THE DYNAMITE ART OF JOHN CASSADAY |
Highly Recommended. John Cassaday's dynamic compositions are well known, but this is the very first time they've been collected — and in an oversized, handsome hardcover. Here you will find all of his work for Dynamite in a single book: covers, sketches, inks, some seen before, others appearing in print for the first time. Here are his amazing interpretations of James Bond, The Spider, Dracula, Buck Rogers, Red Sonja, The Green Hornet, Sherlock Holmes, Zorro, The Lone Ranger and many, many others! Recommended. Introduction by Kimberly Power. Aron Wiesenfeld, a former WildStorm and Marvel artist, has been creating works of fine art since the early 2000's. This is a selected collection of his latest pieces. His compositions reflect his early work as a comic book illustrator and are infused with romanticism and mystery. While men and boys make occasional cameos, his works are usually centered upon ethereal and mysterious young women and girls, often isolated in rural and natural landscapes or in deserted city streets. Clover Press, 2021....More.

How to deal with pesky and not so pesky clients. How to keep yourself in front of those clients. Packed with personal commentary on most of the pieces, which are MANY. Frontenac House, 2020....More.

Highly Recommended. Second of three new, original graphic novels. Bestselling crime noir masters Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are back with a new original graphic novel (actually, a series of THREE!) featuring troublemaker-for-hire Ethan Reckless. It's 1985, and things in Ethan's life are going pretty well...until a missing woman shows up in the background of an old B-movie, and Ethan is drawn into Hollywood's secret occult underbelly as he hunts for her among the wreckage of the wild days of the '70s, including his own. |SCOOP SCUTTLE AND HIS PALS The Crackpot Comics of Basil Wolverton |
Highly Recommended. Mad magazine cartoonist Basil Wolverton's warped imagination combines with his outlandishly wacky visual humor in these delightful ultra-rare treasures: series Scoop Scuttle, Mystic Moot, Bingbang Buster, and Jumpin' Jupiter — as they've never been seen before! Rock-bottom printing methods of ten-cent comic books meant Wolverton's intricate line work was routinely obscured and obliterated. Here every effort has been made to restore the art to its original splendor — at last we have the uniquely detailed graphics of this justly revered comic book master. Fantagraphics, 2021. ...More.

Another enormous collection which begins with "Arabian Nights (and Days)", when foreigners start showing up in Fabletown — much to the dismay of longtime residents — plunging Fabletown into a culture clash of dire proportions! Prince Charming is in over his head and must call on the help of a Fable character not seen in these pages for far too long...and this is one wish he can't take back. DC Comics, 2021. ...More.

Coping Skills by John Cuneo is as curious a book as you’ll see, with in-your-face humor, much of it sexual. Check out the scans we made of a few of the cartoons.
And we have a new 42nd Street DVD, #45 in the series. We’re dropping some of the early ones we’ve had for a long time, and a few others are on sale. See them all here. We’ve just 2 or 3 left of several of these. Here’s all of our adult DVDs.

They’ve received their advance copies of the book on Edwin Austin Abbey, a new collection on Frank Cho, a new printing of Bruce Timm’s The Big Tease, and new Gary Gianni. We’ll let you know more as they wind their way here from the far east.
Meanwhile, we’d run out of the Al Williamson Publisher Special Edition Hardcover last week. But Flesk let us have a few more copies, the last we will see, so we filled backorders and still have some left. Act now, this is your last chance to get it from us.
The Al Williamson softcover is low in stock but we hope to have it for a while. Reminder: three more Al Williamson collections are planned, so get on board now.
Carbon 4 in the signed hardcover is also now out of print; our supply is limited but will last a bit longer. The softcover remains available.
Xenozoic Signed Hardcover is running out and we can’t get a restock on it. The softcover is also low in stock. I don’t expect we’ll see reprints of any of these. John says he wishes he’d printed more, demand has outstripped his supply.
The Frazetta Sketchbooks have gone out of print and will not be reprinted. We have a handful of each left. The Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta is going back to press for a third time; we still have the 2nd printing of the hardcover, and the Deluxe Edition, which we are told will probably not see another printing. The Sensuous Frazetta is also going back to press…we have just a few of the original edition left.
We’ve experienced delays getting several of the huge Omnibus volumes lately; both one regularly stocked and a couple that we do as special order. It’s unclear if our network will get us more copies, but for now we’ll be keeping your orders on hand and will let you know if we learn more. So…if we take longer than 3-4 weeks to fill your backorder or special order for one of these big volumes, this is why. We currently don’t have an automatic way to keep you updated on delays, except in this email.
Dark Shadows #1 is now out of print…we have just five left. Books 2-6 are all still available [DARS01, etc. $14.99 ea].
The Collected Toppi – all five now available, and a sixth is coming in soon [COLT01H, COLT02H, etc. $24.99 ea].
Heavy Metal update: 299, 300 and 302 are being reprinted. We have never listed #302 as we never got our original shipment. #300, 299 and 298 are on backorder, we hope to them soon. #304 has also never been listed, because all our copies came in badly damaged; replacements are supposed to be coming shortly.
Exhibits note from Illustration Mag #72
Enchanted: A History of Fantasy Illustration is a superlative book based on an exhibit that was delayed due to the virus. It’s now opening June 12 and runs to October 31, 2021 at the Norman Rockwell Museum. I plan to attend; the last exhibit like this I would not have missed for the world. I hope you can also [ENCHFH.
