HARVEY DUNN Illustrator and Painter of the Pioneer West
Closeout Price! Our Highest Recommendation. By Walter Reed. Harvey Dunn was one of twentieth century America's most powerful illustrators, painters and teachers. This comprehensive volume covers a major portion of his illustrations and paintings for the first time. Content includes illustration art, pioneer and western works, and his powerful World War I pieces inspired by his battlefield sketches. Also included are  rarely seen nudes, portraits, and murals. Paintings from museums and private collections showcase the full range of this talented American artist. Flesk, 2010...More.

HARVEY DUNN Illustrator and Painter of the Pioneer West Deluxe Signed
Signed, numbered, limited, 350! Slipcased with two bonus tipped-in plates. Our Highest Recommendation. By Walter Reed. Special edition previously only available from the museum. Specially bound with a matching green cloth slipcase, onlaid color cover plate blocked in gold. Extra full page photo of Dunn tipped-in on the limitation page, which is signed by Walter Reed and hand-numbered; facing this is an extra tipped-in color plate of an unpublished experimental painting, "Romance," from the 1920s. Harvey Dunn was one of twentieth century America's most powerful illustrators, painters and teachers. Flesk, 2010...More.

Item Code: HDHM
Hard Cover, 9x12, 304pg, Full Color
$125.00

We are able to price the regular edition of the Harvey Dunn this way because the museum that co-published it with Flesk needed to make room. Flesk still charges full price, so we don't think you'll find it cheaper unless you travel to South Dakota to buy one in person. It's really a fine book. The deluxe is also beautifully done, with a small limitation and bonus art and binding. It may not last long, previously they were only available from the museum.

THE ART OF EDENA
Moebius Library. Highly Recommended. By Moebius. A companion volume to the critically acclaimed and New York Times best-selling World of Edena graphic novel, this collects four Edena-related short stories and a motherlode of Moebius illustrations, including some of the Star Watcher series which were so fine, they were also published as signed/limited prints. A celebration of the imagery and creative enthusiasm Moebius held for his Edena universe--which was at times biographical. Includes “Seeing Naples,” “Another Planet,” “The Repairmen,” and “Dying to See Naples.” Dark Horse, 2018...More.

BEAUTIFUL SCENES FROM A FANTASY WORLD
Background Illustrations and Scenes from Anime and Manga Works. Our Highest Recommendation. 32 well-known Japanese illustrators and animators show you their absolutely amazing worlds. Beautiful castles, islands floating in the air, pirate ships sailing through the clouds, retro-futuristic inventions, deserted architectural spaces, towns that have sunk under the ocean, an enchanted forest and a space locomotive.... The work here is just gorgeous, packed with incredible detail and stunningly colored. From work done for films, CD covers, and some pieces done especially for this. We really like this. GUSTAV KLIMT AT HOME
Recommended. By Patrick Bade. Art by Gustav Klimt. This handsome volume explores the influences of Vienna and other places Klimt visited and called home in his life and work. Fully illustrated, the book features paintings, including his famous nudes and portraits of lovely women, archive imagery and photographs of the surrounding city and landscape to provide an insight into how the people and places of his life relate to his work. Klimt was one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. He was both influenced by and shaped the city of Vienna at the turn of the century. Francis Lincoln, 2018...More.

ARTS AND CRAFTS TILES Morris to Voysey
Recommended. By Rob Higgins and Will Farmer. Although Arts and Crafts was initially a medieval revival, the movement was always about the artist craftsman and the appropriate use of materials, rather than any single design tradition. The movement was inspired and led by William Morris, whose company, founded in 1861, produced a full range of interior furnishings, including tiles. These were designed by Morris himself, and also by leading artists and architects of the day such as Edward Burne Jones, Walter Crane, C.F.A. Voysey et al. Amberley, 2017...More.

ARTS AND CRAFTS TILES William De Morgan
Recommended. By Rob Higgins and Will Farmer. William De Morgan was the principal ceramic designer and maker in the Arts and Crafts Movement, circa 1890-1920. His tiles portray iconic images of animals, ships and floral designs, blending style influences to produce designs that featured new, stylized interpretations with a whimsical character. He combined a strong design style with rich glazes, making blue and green, and a deep orangey red into visual trademarks. There were important commissions from royalty and industry, and his ceramics were marketed to the growing middle classes by William Morris, the founder and leading light of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Amberley, 2018...More.

SKETCHING FROM THE IMAGINATION Dark Arts
Highly Recommended. Edited by Marisa Lewis. Sketching and drawing are fundamental to creating great art; the simple doodle is often where artists first bring their ideas and concepts to life. In Sketching from the Imagination: Dark Arts, fifty talented traditional and digital artists showcase work, 6 pages for each, from their sketchbooks, share inspiration, and give insight into how they create imaginative and dark illustrations. Featuring a range of artwork and artists from many fields, from concept design and animation to illustration and comic art. We like this, one of our favorites in this series. 3dtotal, 2018...More.

THE PHANTOM UNMASKED America's First Superhero
At last, a thorough look at this worldwide phenomenon. Recommended. By Kevin Patrick. Before Superman, before Batman, there was — the Phantom! Making its debut as an American newspaper comic strip in 1936, The Phantom was the forerunner of the comic-book superhero genre. Superman was the first costumed hero with super powers...but The Phantom was the first costumed hero. Despite its American origins, The Phantom comic strip has enjoyed far greater popularity with international audiences, most notably in Australia, Sweden, and India, where it has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and comic books. MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN THE FRED FREDERICKS SUNDAYS Volume 1
1965-69. The Meeting of Mandrake and Lothar. By Lee Falk. Art by Fred Fredericks. Following Frederick's updating of Mandrake in the 1960s, we have a hipper and cooler magician. And yet, both Fredericks and Mandrake's creator Lee Falk managed to land our top-hatted hero in some pretty outlandish and action-packed adventures on this Earth and beyond--in space! This volume includes the unwelcome return of Mandrake's arch enemy, The Cobra, the introduction of a sinister new crime syndicate called The Underworld and the creation of a counter crime organization called Inter-Intel, headed up by Mandrake. Graphic Novels

CARTHAGO
Highly Recommended. By Christophe Bec. Art by Eric Henninot Milan Jovanovic. A complex and highly entertaining story, collected all in one from a series of six French graphic novels. We found this a page-turner, with good characters we want to know more about, a large cast of them, and intertwining stories that start years ago and come together in the present day. It starts out about a megalodon, the prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark that was the most ferocious predator of the seas, an 80 foot killing machine long extinct. But when divers drilling in an underwater cave are attacked by this living fossil, oceanographer Kim Melville discovers that this creature may not only have survived, but thrived, and is reclaiming its place at the top of the food chain. ROBERT SILVERBERG'S DOWNWARD TO THE EARTH
Highly Recommended. By Philippe Thirault. Art by Laura Zuccheri. An outstanding and very different graphic novel, that reminds us of Philip K. Dick's work. Based on Robert Silverberg's bestselling novel about the effects of interstellar colonialism and the quest for transcendence. Ex-lieutenant Eddie Gundersen returns to Belzagor, where he had left behind his youthful illusions, the love of his life and his shameful past as a colonizer. He finds the planet returned to its two intelligent species, the woman he left behind and another who has hired him to lead her and her husband to forbidden secret ceremonies. Moderate nudity. Humanoids, 2018. Mature Readers...More.

They can barely stand each other, so how will they possibly deal with the World's Greatest Evil? What legacy can two of the world's most enduring icons of justice leave once they discover an ancient evil has been living inside the world they protect for centuries. Can Batman and the Shadow save the world without destroying it in the process? Writer Steve Orlando (Batman/The Shadow, Justice League of America) and artist by Giovanni Timpano (The Shadow, Transformers) unite to tell an instantly classic tale of noir, mortality and generational heroes and villains. Collects #1-5, 1955. Highly Recommended. Art by Johnny Craig, John Severin, and Reed Crandall. Foreword by John Arcudi. Exciting stories of daring world traveling reporters, mostly male with one beautiful lady, which continue through each issue. Reed Crandall's globe-trotting gal Geri Hamilton appears in every single issue, as does John Severin's finely drawn Steve Rampart. But long neglected, a high point here is also Johnny Craig's work, who was the editor, cover artist, and drew the other two stories each issue. Here are the screenplay adaptations from acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter Paul Dehn's Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.  Both were adapted into comics by renowned writer Doug Moench, the visionary co-creator of the Batman villain Bane and Marvel's Moon Knight,  with outstanding black and white art (since these are done as Marvel magazines, not comics) by Rico Rival (Ghosts, Weird Mystery Tales) and Alfredo  P. ARCHIE 1000 PAGE COMICS TREASURY
Recommended. By Dan DeCarlo, Frank Doyle, Dan Parent, Stan Goldberg, Harry Lucey et al. 1000 pages of iconic Archie comic stories, featuring the same mix of wild humor, awkward charm and genuine relatability that has kept Archie and the gang popular for years. Over 100 full-color stories, starting in the 1960s with Dan DeCarlo and Stan Goldberg clasics and through the decades. We like this series. It boasts a massive amount of material for a bargain price. No other comics reprint package offers this much material--and in color, yet! This is a smaller "digest" size but quite readable. Archie, 2018...More.

New Pre-Code Horror

PRE-CODE CLASSICS MYSTERIOUS ADVENTURES Volume 1
Collects #1-6, 1951-52. Recommended. Art by Lou Cameron, A.C. Hollingsworth, Walter Johnson et al. Here's the first six-comic volume in the complete series, 25 issues, of Mysterious Adventures, an offbeat but highly-sought after title from the obscure publisher Story. Freaky fables including severed heads and bondage--and lots of cool skeletons, especially on the covers. These look a lot like Avon and Iger Shop titles, doing their bit to compete by getting more and more over the top on covers and stories. The fine Lou Cameron, better known for his work on the Ace horror titles contributes several excellent stories. PS Artbooks, 2018...More.

PRE-CODE CLASSICS DARK MYSTERIES Volume 1
Collects #1-6, 1951. Highly Recommended. Art by Lou Cameron, Wally Wood & Joe Orlando, Harrison, Hollingsworth et al. Another off-beat publisher from the pre-code horror boom. From Master/Merit comes a 24-issue series kicking off with an eight-pager from Wally Wood ("The Curse of the Sea Witch")! Elsewhere there are tales from Joe Orlando, Walter Johnson, Ed Goldfarb, Bill Fraccio, Lou Cameron, John D'Agostino, Tony Tallarico, Harry Harrison (Wood's studio-mate and the Hugo-award winning Sci Fi writer), Hy Fleishman and a whole host of other wacked-out-of-their-gourd luminaries. PRE-CODE CLASSICS GHOSTLY WEIRD STORIES Volume 1
Collects #120-124, 1953-54. Recommended. Art by Jay Disbrow, L.B. Cole, Jack Kamen et al. The great Jay Disbrow (who died in 2017) is featured memorably in this often overlooked and certainly unsung gem, appearing within wonderfully weird covers by L.B. Cole and alongside EC stalwart Jack Kamen (jungle and horror comics reprinted from pre-EC days). Disbrow does his wildest sci-fi and horror, and Cole provides killer covers that have become classics. The balance are reprinted stories from Fox titles, including three Jo-Jo's and a Rulah story, The Mask from Capt. Flight, and Torpedo Man, an unusual aquatic hero drawn by the great Rudy Palais. News and Notes

More about artist Harvey Dunn

From Wikipedia: In 1906, after two years with Pyle, Dunn established his own studio in Wilmington and immediately began a successful career in illustration. He was a prodigious painter, able to produce (on one occasion) fifty-five completed paintings in eleven weeks for various clients. A contemporary described his style in these terms, “He literally attacked a canvas and sometimes I thought he would impale the painting with his brush.”
In 1914, Dunn moved east and settled in Leonia, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City and its publishing world. Inspired by Pyle's example, Dunn opened the Leonia School of Illustration in 1915 with artist Charles S. Chapman.

The years before the country's involvement in World War I turned out to be Dunn's most prolific period as an illustrator. His experiences at the front as one of eight artist-correspondents with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe were a turning point for the artist. Dunn's interest in commercial illustration declined on his return to the United States. Instead, the artist envisioned working for several years for the War College committing to canvas his sketches of the battlefields of Europe. Unfortunately, demobilization occurred at a rapid pace, and Dunn's project was rejected. It became the big heartbreak of his life. However, Dunn was able to salvage part of his ambitious plan; in 1927, he began to paint covers with military themes for The American Legion Monthly magazine. The majority of Dunn's war sketches are now housed at the Smithsonian Institution in the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

The South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, South Dakota, houses approximately 140 of Dunn's best works. His "often seen" painting Dakota Woman, from his series of strong pioneer women, is housed at Dakota Discovery Museum in Mitchell, South Dakota. The Chuckwagon is a 1915 Dunn painting owned by the Denver Art Museum. The Smithsonian Institution notes it is a "quiet scene depicting a small group of cowboys seated on the ground beside a chuckwagon, their backs turned toward the viewer, their horses standing nearby, and a pond in the background."

(Right) Illustration for a serialized novel in the June 1922 Harper's Magazine.

Later in life Dunn remarked: “The most fruitful and worthwhile thing I have ever done has been to teach.” Dunn became an influential and revered teacher; students referred to him as “Mr. Dunn” as a sign of respect and admiration. The majority of Dunn's students were either graduate level painters or professional illustrators. Dunn was not interested in teaching painting techniques. His approach was philosophically oriented. He spoke about spirit, emotions, and discourse at length. He discussed his philosophy of life and art, offered group criticism, and strode from easel to easel discussing each student's work in turn.
Dunn's most inspired teaching was probably achieved at the Grand Central School of Art, which was established by the Grand Central Art Galleries and located on the top floor of Grand Central Terminal in New York City. His comments were captured by a student during a five-hour class session and were published in 1934 in a slim volume titled An Evening in the Classroom.

Dunn was a demanding teacher and at times a harsh critic. He believed in preparing his students for the harsh realities and intense competition of the commercial world. Talent was not enough. As he once said, “If you ever amount to anything at all, it will be because you are true to that deep desire or ideal which made you seek artistic expression in pictures.”

LOU CAMERON'S UNSLEEPING DEAD
Chilling Archives of Horror Comics #23. Highly Recommended. Edited & Preface by Tillmann Courth, with Craig Yoe. Lou Cameron was a groundbreaking artist in the 1950s Pre-Code comics era but all the work here is little known. He's far better known for Classics Illustrated like The Time Machine, a far more conventional work. His work here is simply amazing, with details and nuances that I think are worthy of Frazetta during the same period! With his innovative experimental layouts and frequent use of surrealism, his horror comics have been described as “Jim Steranko meets Graham Ingels. Yoe Books, 2018...More.

Baker's tremendous talents came to fruition at St. John Publications, where his realistic style combined with his talent for creating gorgeous women. The little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman, their first project after leaving DC Comics. Included are complete stories and runs of the rare dailies and Sundays (in full color). Siegel and Shuster struggled to come up with a new superhero, one that would right their wrongs and prove that justice, fair-play, and zany craftsmanship were the true American way. But Funnyman failed miserably, even though it's a lot of fun to read today. And the art is very good, too. It's a must-have collection for any comic fan. Feral House, 2010...More.

News and Notes

Hellboy Into the Silent Sea Studio Edition

At only $50 and including the complete story, this seems a bargain to us. And publisher Flesk says it's almost gone and is shipping as I write this [HC, 10x13, 144pg. HELISEH]. I upped my order but it still may not last long.

You can also get the original graphic novel this is taken from, which I thoroughly enjoyed [HELINTS. $14.99, includeds a bookplate signed by Gary Gianni].

Sac-Con

Highpoints of the show last weekend in Sacramento—I got to say hello to The X-Men's Chris Claremont, who I hadn't seen in too many years. We went backpacking once with my then wife Ann and Chuck Rozanski, of Mile High Comics, in the mountains outside Denver, and got rained out. Chris had never-ending lines of fans asking to have comics signed. We finally got to talk on the loading ramp after the show, after I missed him twice at my booth.

And Bob Layton was there, co-founder of Valiant Comics and man about the comics world. Bob and I go back to his fanzine days in the 1970s. He got his start doing high quality pro-like zines like The Charlton Bullseye and was part of the CPL Gang. Here's their Wiki intro: "The CPL Gang was a group of comic book enthusiasts who published a number of fanzines in the mid-1970s, including Contemporary Pictorial Literature (CPL) and Charlton Bullseye. Founded by Roger Stern and Bob Layton, the CPL Gang eventually included Roger Slifer, Duffy Vohland, Tony Isabella, Don Maitz, Michael Uslan, Steven Grant, and John Byrne, all of whom later became comics professionals."

Bob's a film producer in Florida now—it's been decades since we bumped into one another. He kept introducing me to his buddies as "the founder of the direct market, and all this" gesturing at the show in general! I did my best to correct such head-spinning notions. Phil Seuling, who was a mentor of sorts to me, started the direct market, i.e. buying from Marvel and DC and selling direct to comic stores. Prior to that, Phil and I co-distributed a number of fanzines and early alternate comics, such as Cerebus and Elfquest, The Comics Journal and Squa Tront.

If you want all of THAT story, grab a copy of Comic Shop by Dan Gearino, which I will sign for you if you ask [COMSHO. $26.95].

Artist Brent Anderson was also there. I got introduced to his very sweet wife and she was patient while he regaled both of us with stories of working for my old stores, Comics and Comix, back in San Jose in the early 1970s. He lived in a tiny apartment behind the store for some time.
Dan Brereton caught me up on his art education, attending art school in Oakland and San Francisco before he got his start at Eclipse Comics in the early 1980s, on the revamp of The Black Terror. Dan actually submitted something to me just prior to that, and remembers I was one of those who actually replied to him. I probably told him I wasn't a publisher, but do something and I'll handle it. And it's been that way ever since.

ECOF Friends of Edgar Rice Burroughs, May 18-19, Folsom, California

Dan Parson, Thomas Yeates, and Mike Royer are among the guests. We have been working with Thomas Yeates and Dwayne Covey on Twixt Two Worlds 3, Thomas' third sketchbook and a very special project. We'll be unveiling it at the show, a signed & numbered edition of 1,000. We'll announce it here in the email as soon as it is available. An abbreviated edition will be given away to all attendees. Admittance to the dealer's room only will be FREE. We'll have all our ERB items there, and a lot more.
