Flash Gordon Sunday Strips, Tomb of Dracula, Savage Sword of Conan, Crisis on Infinite Earth, Heavy Metal, Swamp Thing & Best Sellers!

We didn’t have quite so many new items this week, so we’ve added Bestsellers from July to now. An extraordinary selection of excellent books have come out in the past several months so I wanted to share them with you in case you’ve overlooked any of them. We have two with signed bookplates: The Complete Moon Girl and EC Fan Addict #7; the lovely new Art of Roy Krenkel; a Mark Schultz Illustrators special; the double-size Dave Stevens Comic Book Creator…and the list goes on. Enjoy!

Our new catalog will be ready to upload next week—it features 16 bonus pages including new sale items and a double-sized backlist section. And a cool Dan Brereton cover. Check in early next week to the home page…

SWAYONCE The Mini Artbook By Swayart
For the past few years, cover artist Joshua “Sway” Swaby has been very busy. 2. FRANK FRAZETTA FINE LINES
Our Highest Recommendation. By Sara Frazetta and Arnie Fenner. Frazetta first achieved international prominence with his powerful covers for paperbacks featuring Tarzan, Howard's Conan, and The Death Dealer, but when asked how he was able to create such unforgettable paintings he replied simply, "Drawing is everything." Fine Lines helps to explain why he felt that way with a collection of his most exciting works in pencil, ink, and watercolor. Including many of his influential illustrations from the 1960s and '70s for the fiction of Edgar Rice Burroughs and J.R.R. Tolkien, this beautiful book also features nearly a dozen previously unpublished drawings along with historical essays sharing the stories behind the art. Some of these stories offer some of his finest pen & ink works, with shapely women, nude statues, and lots of implied lust. Fantasy art's most popular painter was also one of the finest comic book illustrators in the pre-code 1950s. This deluxe collection exhibits the skill of a master craftsman but also provides tantalizing glimpses of where the young artist’s career would ultimately take him, into his iconic paintings of Conan, covers for the Warren mags and famous movie posters for Clint Eastwood, among others. Art by Sheldon Moldoff and Johnny Craig. The amazing adventures of Claire Lune and Lionel Manning — Moon Girl and the Prince — who together fend off invaders from other planets as well as fight crime. Moon Girl #5 had a story that looked forward to the great horror comics explosion of a few years later: "The Corpse with Will Power", one of two stories credited with starting the trend in horror comics at EC. This was EC Comics' one-and-only attempt at doing a superhero, or rather superheroine. Artist Shelly Moldoff co-created Moon Girl, after he'd long worked at DC Comics drawing Hawkman, The Black Pirate and numerous other adventure heroes. Dark Horse, 2025. ...More.

Item Code: ECACMH
Hard Cover, 9x11, 368pg, Full Color

8. THE FANTASTIC ART OF ROY G KRENKEL
Our Highest Recommendation. With nearly five hundred pieces of art, including sixteen foldouts, this is the definitive collection for fans of and newcomers to the virtuoso fantasy artist — curated by Craig Yoe, with a foreword by Sara Frazetta and a preface by Michael Wm. Kaluta. If master draftspersons of the Renaissance were reincarnated to create sword-and-sorcery art of more contemporary times, they would have had Roy Krenkel as their mentor. RGK defined the term "an artist’s artist," and comics artists ardently study his incredible work. Roy filled the pages of the pro-zine/fanzine Amra with his favorite art — collected here are the complete Amra illustrations. Amra was devoted to Robert E. Howard & other sword & sorcery authors and subjects, edited by George Scithers, who also published Roy’s first art book, Cities and Scenes of the Ancient World. Dark Horse, 2025. ...More.

Item Code: FANRKH

A book-sized, 274-page collection! 50 years after the debut of Metal Hurlant in France, the iconic and genre-defining publication is finally coming to the English language, and in bigger and bolder form than ever before: as a quarterly anthology published by Humanoids. 10. ARTHUR ADAMS PRELIMINARY STUDIES Signed
Closeout Price! Signed! Highly Recommended. Amazing and fascinating blue pencil preliminaries — only a few of these have ever been seen on Arthur's Instagram page. But this is how he works out his final drawings and figures — so John Fleskes began with a big stack of originals and culled it down to this cool little book, which is small but quite thick! 224 page 5 x 7.5 inches. There are action scenes, heroines in motion, closeups — all variety of images as Art works out what will go onto his final pencil and inked work. Flesk, 2025....More.

MOEBIUS LEZARDS REVEURS
Import from France, minimal French text. Recommended. Two previously unpublished personal sketchbooks by Jean Giraud Mœbius are brought together in a single 244-page book. For Moebius, walking around with a sketchbook in his pocket at all times was a habit and working method. Created between 1996 and 1999, these collect his graphic musings. He threw in the seeds of his future albums — such as the first pages of Le Chasseur Déprime — as well as spontaneous concepts, poems, and observational drawings: family moments, friendly encounters, or specific places: Paris, Los Angeles, Boston, Mexico City, New York... Moebius Productions, 2025....More.

THE ESSENTIAL PEANUTS By Charles Schulz The Greatest Comic Strip of All Time
Recommended. Award-winning author Mark Evanier provides insightful and entertaining Peanuts cultural and historical context. Frankenstein: A Film by Guillermo del Toro

Our friend Ken Sanders got to see a private advance screening last week, in preparation for interviewing del Toro. That event took place Friday October 3, to raise money to restore the Pacific Palisades Library that burned in the huge fire earlier this year.

It was very successful, raising $100,000, and Ken tells us the movie is wonderful…very true to the original Mary Shelly story, which he read on the plane flying out from Salt Lake City. Here are all the books we have on Frankenstein right now, including Berni Wrightson’s masterpiece—Guillermo del Toro credits Berni directly for inspiration for the film!

Upcoming Events

I owe you reports on the Thomas Spurgeon Award I received at CXC in Columbus Ohio in September; OAFCon which was the following weekend; and LA Rare Books October 5-6. I can say now all three events were wonderful.

We fell in love with the Billy Ireland Museum in Columbus and all the wonderful people who run it. I plan to make it an annual pilgrimage.

OAFCon was swell as usual, with lots of vintage material and a lot of vintage buddies too. We had a very successful show and I came home with wonderful new additions to my collection.

LA Rare Books was also outstanding; The LA Times did a big feature on it, Our friend Ken Sanders made that also. We had a great time even if we were getting weary from three shows in three weeks.

We have a few days off this weekend then off to the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair October 18-19.

After Seattle I’ll sit down and do a full write up of the shows and add a bunch of pictures. We’ll post them all on our Events page. After that, no shows until the January Berkeley Comic Show!
