BEST OF WITZEND Our Highest Recommendation. By Wallace Wood, Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta, et al. Fed up with the formulaic restrictions, censors, and no creator's rights in mainstream comics, Wallace Wood created and published his own magazine beginning in 1965. It was the first ever "pro" fanzine. It became a cauldron of bubbling creativity for Wood and his friends to produce their own personal work, without regard to commercial constraints. And with friends like Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Gray Morrow, and Reed Crandall, it was bound to be a great ride. (And that was just the first issue!). In later issues, Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Art Spiegelman, Vaughn Bodé, Jim Steranko, Jeff Jones, Howard Chaykin, Bernie Wrightson — and dozens more — joined in. Fantagraphics, 2018...More. Item Code: BESWH Hard Cover, 9x12, 240pg, b&w |
JACK KIRBY MARVEL HEROES & MONSTERS Artist's Edition Highly Recommended. By Stan Lee. An outstanding three-part collection. First we are treated to FIVE COMPLETE STORIES, all from the original art: Ant Man's origin from Tales to Astonish #35; Captain America #81, "The Red Skull Supreme;" The Human Torch in "Return of the Wizard," Strange Tales #105; Sgt. Fury #6, "Fangs of the Desert Fox," and X-Men #7, "The Return of the Blob." All drawn in the old Twice-Up format (meaning this is a BIG book!). Plus: SEVEN COMPLETE pre-hero Monster stories AND finally, 27 covers, splash and pin-up pages from more very early issues. IDW, 2018...More. Item Code: JKMHMAEH Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 15x22, 160pg, b&w $150.00 |
We were short-shipped on these from our distributor so that we have no copies on hand after filling our advance orders. But we have confirmed an order for more direct from the publisher, which should be here by August 6th or 7th. Play it safe and reserve your copy now, if this ends up going out of print quickly. |
THE SHADOW #132 Fingers of Death and The Blackest Mail. Recommended. By Walter B. Gibson and Bruce Elliott. Art by Tom Lovell and Newt Alfred. One by one, prominent citizens fall victim to "Fingers of Death" and only The Shadow can uncover the murderous mastermind behind the serial killings! Then, mysterious writing on a wall, a toy boat and a kite set Lamont Cranston on the trail of the Hollywood extortionist behind "The Blackest Mail." Plus, a lost Shadow radio adventure by Walter Gibson! And a look at the cast of the radio show. Also the usual highly informative "Interlude" by Will Murray. Sanctum, 2018...More. LA VIE PARISIENNE Covers & Cartoons 1917-1922 Highly Recommended. Art by Chéri Hérouard, René Vincent, George Barbier et al. The lavishly illustrated magazine employed many of the era's most famous and talented artists and became part of the fabric of Parisian life. This deluxe large-format volume presents scores of sumptuous color illustrations from the magazine's heyday--cover designs and elegant cartoons of chic young beauties in fanciful and occasionally risqué and even nude tableaux. GOBLIN MARKET AND OTHER SELECTED POEMS Exquisite Facimile Edition. Highly Recommended. By Christina Rossetti. Art by Florence Harrison. Beautifully illustrated with 16 full-color paintings and scores of line drawings by an artist inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, a superb artist but due to a more limited output, far less known than her contemparies like Rackham, Dulac and Charles Robinson, whose b&w work may have inspired Harrison. From one of the finest poets of the Victorian era, the sister of artist D.G. Rossetti. Combines two classic collections of poetry: Goblin Market and Other Poems and Shorter Poems. The centerpiece is Rossetti's most famous work, "Goblin Market," a haunting fairy tale. Calla, 2018...More. Item Code: GOMAH Hard Cover, 7x10, 192pg, Partial Color |

Over 100 drawings and watercolor paintings are packed into an 88-page full color book, an oversized 10x12 inch hardcover with a printed dust jacket and an introduction written by the one and only Charles Vess. This is mind-bogglingly good. The origin and first stories of the one-and-only team, considered by some as DC's answer to The X-Men. A very different comic book team, featuring a new breed of superheroes. Cast out of society due to their deformities, the Doom Patrol were a group of misfit loners not blessed, but cursed, with unnatural powers. These human oddities--Elasti-Girl, Negative Man, Robotman and the Chief--save the world one strange case at a time. FASHION ILLUSTRATION IN BRITAIN Society and the Seasons. Recommended. By Amber Jane Butchart. Right up to the roaring twenties and avante-garde pochoir illustrations. Before the invention of photography, the fashion-conscious public relied on illustrations in magazines to follow the latest developments in style and ensure they were dressed for High Society in every season. A childhood comic book fan turned comic book retailer, the author soon discovered the prevalence of scams in the world of comics collecting. This book is his tutorial on how to collect wisely and reduce risks. Drawing on skills learned from 20 years with the San Diego Police Department and as a Comic-Con attendee since 1970, he covers in detail the history and culture of collecting comic books and describes the pitfalls, including common deceptions of grading, pricing, as well as theft, and mail and insurance fraud. ALSO AVAILABLE COMIC SHOP The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us A New Geek Culture Signed Signed by Bud! Highly Recommended. By Dan Gearino. The early 1970s saw the birth of the modern comic book shop. Its unprecedented growth to thousand of stores was due in large part to a dynamic entrepreneur, Phil Seuling. His direct market model allowed shops to get comics straight from the publishers, bypassing middlemen. Stores could better customize their offerings and independent publishers could now access national distribution. And it opened up a space for quirky ideas to gain an audience and helped transform small-press series, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Bone, into media giants. Swallow, 2017...More. ALSO AVAILABLE THE 10 CENT WAR: Comic Books, Propaganda, and World War II Recommended. Edited by Trischa Goodnow and James J. Kimble. How different types of comic books and characters supplied reasons and means to support the war effort. The contributors demonstrate that, free of government control, how effective these appeals were, while often racist and extreme. The book discusses the role of such major characters as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Uncle Sam along with a host of such minor characters as kid gangs and superhero sidekicks. It even considers novelty and small presses, providing a well-rounded look at the many ways that comic books served as popular propaganda. University Press of Mississippi, 2016...More.
