PRE-CODE CLASSICS CHILLING TALES OF HORROR BEWARE Volume 1 Collects Youthful's Beware #10-12 and two great Avon one—shots, 1952-1953. Recommended. By Harry Harrison et al.Youthful operated from 1949 to 1954 and only published about ten titles. Doug Wildey was the company's lead artist—he later went on to create the 1964 animated television series Jonny Quest. This is a totally different title than Beware from Trojan—also collected by PS. Also here are two scarce Avon one-shots: Phantom Witch Doctor, with a great cover & 7 pages by Kinstler, and Night of Mystery by Kinstler and A.C. Hollingsworth. This pulls out all the stops: we have Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum by Wildey; an atom bomb and shrunken-head cover; an Ambrose Bierce adaptation; and a S.O.T.I. issue. And in #34, we're treated to "The story of ruthless business man W. B. Gaines," with a Ditko cover and more art. Also here are stories by Bill Molno, Sal Trapani, Don Perlin, Bill Fraccio, Maurice Whitman, Charles Nicholas, Richard Doxsee and Marvel's very own Gene Colan. Ditko's moody, individualistic touch came to dominate Charlton's supernatural titles such as this one. PS Artbooks, 2020....More. Item Code: PCSS04H Hard Cover, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color $46.99 |

PRE-CODE CLASSICS AMAZING ADVENTURES Volume 1 Closeout Price! Collects #1-6, 1950-52. Highly Recommended. Art by Murphy Anderson, Jerry Siegel, Wally Wood et al. Oh, boy, we got an out'n'out doozy for you this time, with the six 1950's issues of Ziff Davis' Amazing Adventures, brim full with work from the likes of Murphy Anderson, Jerry Siegel (editor/writer), Ogden Whitney, Wally Wood, Norman Saunders, Ross Andru, and a host of other talented writers and artists. I could say more, like how #2 contains "The Steel Monster," a kickass riff on Ted Sturgeon's "Killdozer" yarn from 1944 (also homaged by Marvel some 20 years later). PS Artbooks, 2016....More. Item Code: PCAA01H Hard Cover, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS DARK MYSTERIES Volume 1 Closeout Price! Collects #1-6, 1951. Highly Recommended. Art by Lou Cameron, Wally Wood & Joe Orlando, Harrison, Hollingsworth et al. Another off-beat publisher from the pre-code horror boom. From Master/Merit comes a 24-issue series kicking off with an eight-pager from Wally Wood ("The Curse of the Sea Witch")! Elsewhere there are tales from Joe Orlando, Walter Johnson, Ed Goldfarb, Bill Fraccio, Lou Cameron, John D'Agostino, Tony Tallarico, Harry Harrison (Wood's studio-mate and the Hugo-award winning Sci Fi writer), Hy Fleishman and a whole host of other wacked-out-of-their-gourd luminaries. PS Artbooks, 2018....More. Item Code: PCD01H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS DARK MYSTERIES Volume 2 Closeout Price! Collects #7-12, 1952-53. Recommended. Art by Harry Harrison, A. C. Hollingsworth, Hy Fleishman, Doug Wildey et al. Some of the weirdest and most esoteric stories and covers of the time. Skeletons, anyone? They loved them on every cover. And busty, Wally Wood-ish ladies—on the covers and inside, too. Dismemberment, hypo blood drainage, cannibalism, witch burning, severed heads...even a horror witch hostess clearly stolen from EC. And that's all noted in Overstreet! As shown on the cover here, artist Hy Fleishman was obviously influenced by Wood and he has plenty here. Also so does Hollingsworth, also a Woody clone. PS Artbooks, 2018....More. Item Code: PCD02H Hard Cover, 7x10, 216pg, Full Color |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS ADVENTURES INTO DARKNESS Volume 1 Closeout Price! Collects #5-9, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. By Alex Toth, George Tuska, Jerry Grandenetti, John Celardo, Ruben Moreira, Jack Katz et al. The covers alone are worth the price of admission — three stories by Toth, Jerry Grandenetti, plus, for fans of DC's My Greatest Adventure, a beautifully drawn story by Ruben Moreira —very few pre-code comics come any better than this. The under-rated Ralph Mayo contributes too. More wild work by Jack Katz included two covers. Even a delightful little two-pager by Murphy Anderson. Really strong artwork on fun horror stories in the EC tradition. Standard Comics did not believe in #1 issues so this ten issue run begins with #5. PS Artbooks, 2017....More. Item Code: PCA01H Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color |
PRE-CODE CLASSICS ADVENTURES INTO DARKNESS Volume 2 Closeout Price! Collects #10-14, 1953-54. Final volume. Recommended. By George Roussos, Art Saaf, John Celardo, Nick Cardy, Alex Toth, Mike Sekowsky et al. The covers alone in this baby are worth the price of admission, by George Roussos and DC mainstay Mike Sekowsky, doing his best imitation of Alex Toth! And his best was very good, as shown on several of his stories here. Also in these issues, two stories by Jack Katz, an Overstreet-identified lingerie panel, and a cannibalism story cited by T.E. Murphy's anti-comics articles. And work by Gene Fawcette (Planet Comics and Avon regular) and the other artists mentioned above. Way above average pre-code stories. PS Artbooks, 2017....More. Item Code: PCA02H Hard Cover, 7x10, 184pg, Full Color |

Richard Corben RIP Richard had just turned 80 in October, but apparently in a heart operation that went wrong, he passed away December 2. We are shocked and saddened. He's been a part of this business from the very beginning. A buddy of mine in my home town of San Jose was the publisher of Weirdom back circa 1966, which is where Corben's first work appeared. He followed that up with work in another 60's fanzine, Voice of Comicdom, also out of the Bay Area, even though he was from Kansas. I loved his work from the very beginning, and carried everything of his that I could get my hands on.
|
He became one of the biggest names in underground comics. Unlike even Crumb, Corben held appeal to traditional comic fans, for his superb fantasy work and self-done color, back when they were done with overlays, before computers. He was a master of this technique on titles like Fever Dreams; I remember Denis Kitchen proudly showing me Corben's color key for this when I visited Denis in Milwaukee in the 70s. I actually published him myself once. Editor Jan Strnad did the first three issues of Anomaly as a fanzine, with Corben art among other works. He asked me to do the 4th issue as an underground comic, due to my proximity to bay area comix publishers and my distribution connections. We printed 20,000 copies and it sold very well. Anomaly featured one story drawn by Robert Kline, the rest by Corben, and all stories written by Jan Strnad. Strnad would go on to be a writer in the Warren magazines and for the mainstream companies.
|
As the underground comix era wound down, Corben carried on with his own self-published work, Fantagor being one title, then began doing underground comics for Last Gasp and Kitchen Sink, and eventually moved into working for most of the independent as well as mainstream comic publishers. He'd been doing a regular series in Heavy Metal of late.
