At the Mountains of Madness, new Moebius, Great Occultists, Black Canary and Steranko is back!

We lead off with my favorite new book, At the Mountains of Madness. The new Moebius collection is also a winner. I greatly enjoyed Conan Exodus and am still delighting in Hunt Emerson's Great Occultists. And the Golden Age Black Canary archive is also a real treat. A fine look at Steranko is back in print. Also: Frank Thorne, news, arrival updates and more.

AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
Oversized hardcover with exquisite artwork. Our Highest Recommendation. By H.P. Lovecraft. Art by Fancois Baranger. Arkham, 1933. Professor Dyer, a prominent geologist, learns that a scientific expedition will soon leave for Antarctica following in the footsteps of the journey which he himself had made in 1931. In the hope of dissuading the attempt, Dyer decides to make a full account of the tragic events he had survived, this time without omitting the passages which he had kept silent about on his return, for fear of being taken for a madman. Two years earlier, ships chartered by Miskatonic University had landed on the frozen continent at the start of the Antarctic summer, and the group of four professors and sixteen students set to work immediately. The expedition biologist, Professor Lake, left with several members of the team to follow a promising fossil track. After just a few days, he announced by radio that he had discovered astonishing specimens of an unknown ancient species, before stopping all communication after a terrible storm. I just relisted the companion to this, The Call of Cthulhu, last week and promptly sold out our copies. It also has my highest recommendation. These are both illustrated versions using HPL's text. We'll have more shortly, and you are welcome to reserve one if you missed it [CALLCH. $29.95, $27.95]. We have another similar title The Call of Cthulhu and Dagon, just in last week, which is a graphic novel by different creators.

MALEVOLENT VISIONS The Art of Der Orchideengarten Volume 5
Collects Vol 2 #9-15. Recommended. By Thomas Negovan. Art by E. Plaichinger-Coltelli, Karl Ritter, Walter Wellenstein et al. Germany was already decimated by the First World War, and the Spanish Flu ravaged the country from border to border. It was during these unsettling years that the world's first horror-fantasy magazine was published. Immediately after the First World War, German art was at its height of decadence and debauchery: the magazine included copious illustrations of themes ranging from suspense and terror to crime and the eerily-erotic. Negovan also describes each of the stories, offering us an eerie glimpse at early fantasy horror.Century Guild, 2021....More

LAZLO PARKER
Highly Recommended. This all-new hardcover matches the format as Le Faune de Mars, 4o Days in the Desert and Le Major. But this is purely an Art of Moebius, its abundant pages collecting most surreal paintings and drawings. "Lazlo Parker" is an obscure artist, purely from Moebius' imaginings--an expert in mechanized and yet organic shapes, a compulsive-obsessive drawer... Minimal text (intro, afterword and minor captioning) all in French. Moebius Productions, 2020. ...More

THE INCAL
Back in print. Collects the 1st six volumes of The Incal, 1981-88. Highly Recommended. By Alejandro Jodorowsky. Art by Jean Giraud (Moebius). Here is Moebius at his finest!! John Difool, a detective in a degenerate dystopian world, finds his life turned upside down when he discovers an ancient, mystical artifact called "The Incal." Difool's adventures will bring him into conflict with the galaxy's greatest warrior, the Metabaron, and will pit him against the awesome powers of the Technopope. These encounters and many others make up a tale of comic and cosmic proportions that has Difool fighting for not only his very survival but also the survival of the entire universe. And Moebius obviously had a great time with these wild, metaphysical, cosmic drawings. Humanoids, 2020...More

LIVES OF THE GREAT OCCULTISTS
Highly Recommended. By Kevin Jackson. Art by Hunt Emerson. Since the dawn of humanity, there have been individuals who want to mess around with Hidden Powers -- or scam others, impressed with their "special" powers. Some were mystics, some were scientists, some were charlatans. Some were powerful, some were wretched. All were pretty bonkers. From Dr. John Dee to Kenneth Anger, from Mother Shipton to Madam Blavatsky, from Isaac Newton to David Bowie -- centuries of eccentric, bizarre lives told in wonderfully funny short comic-style biographies. Collects Conan the Barbarian: Exodus #1, 2019; Savage Sword of Conan #12, 2019; King-Size Conan #1, 2020. Recommended. By Frank Tieri, Roy Thomas et al. Art by Andrea Di Vito et al. SSavage tales of Conan the Barbarian by blockbuster creators! First, visionary artist Esad Ribic writes and illustrates the never-before-told story of Conan's first journey from Cimmeria at 15 years old! I quite liked this, collecting very recent stories celebrating Conan's early life. It reminded me of the first Conan stories and, in fact, Roy Thomas' story is actually a prequel to the very first Barry Windsor-Smith story in Conan #1. Oops, spoiler alert…

WONDER WOMAN EARTH ONE Volume 3
Recommended. By Grant Morrison. Art by Yanick Paquette. Don't miss this: ALL the cool first adventures of this late-Golden-Age heroine. Introduced in 1947 as a supporting character in Flash Comics, Black Canary became an instant hit with readers. She earned her own starring feature that established her identity as Dinah Drake, a meek florist by day who dished out vigilante justice by night under the guise of the Black Canary. Collects all of Dinah Drake's early comic book appearances by Robert Kanigher, Gardner Fox, Carmine Infantino, and Murphy Anderson. DC Comics, 2021....More

These early stories are tongue in cheek, since she started out in the Johnny Thunder strip which was a loopy super-hero spoof. He was constantly being saved by the strange alien character Thunderbolt. Reader response was so good, Black Canary first became a regular, then graduated to her own strip. She reminds me of Harvey's Golden Age Black Cat, not to be taken too seriously…but lots of fun.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS HOWARD THE DUCK Volume 1
Recommended. Wow -- an extra large Masterwork with all of Howard's first adventures. There were several worthy candidates for the milestone 300th Masterworks edition, but only one waddled away with election victory: Steve Gerber and his artistic cohorts Val Mayerik, Frank Brunner and Gene Colan delivered one of comics' most iconoclastic and hilarious characters with ol' Howard. About Comics & How-to

MYSTERIOUS TRAVELERS Steve Ditko and the Search for a New Liberal Identity
By Zack Kruse. Steve Ditko (1927-2018) was one of the most important contributors to American comic books. As the co-creator of Spider-Man and sole creator of Doctor Strange, Ditko made an indelible mark on American popular culture. Mysterious Travelers: Steve Ditko and the Search for a New Liberal Identity resets the conversation about his heady and powerful work. Always inward facing, Ditko's narratives employed superhero and supernatural fantasy in the service of self-examination, and with characters like the Question, Mr. A, and Static, Ditko turned ordinary superhero comics into philosophic treatises. Many of Ditko's philosophy-driven comics show a clear debt to ideas found in Ayn Rand's Objectivism. Unfortunately, readers often reduce Ditko's work to a mouthpiece for Rand's vision. Mysterious Travelers unsettles this notion. University of Mississippi Press, 2021...More

R. CRUMB Literature, Autobiography and the Quest for Self
By David Stephen Calonne. R. Crumb: Literature, Autobiography, and the Quest for Self contains six chapters that chart Crumb's intellectual trajectory and explore the recurring philosophical themes that permeate his depictions of literary and biographical works and the ways he responds to them through innovative, dazzling compositional techniques. Calonne explores the ways Crumb develops concepts of solitude, despair, desire, and conflict as aspects of the quest for self in his engagement with the book of Genesis and works by Franz Kafka, Jean-Paul Sartre, the Beats, Charles Bukowski, and Philip K. Dick, as well as Crumb's illustrations of biographies of musicians Jelly Roll Morton and Charley Patton. Calonne demonstrates how Crumb's love for literature led him to attempt an extremely faithful rendering of the texts he admired while at the same time highlighting for his readers the particular hidden philosophical meanings he found most significant in his own autobiographical quest for identity and his authentic self. News & Notes

Frank Thorne

Frank passed away March 7, at the age of 90. I met Frank in the 1970s when he was doing his Wizard skits at the New York Comic Art Con, with Wendy Pini. He was also an early customer at those shows. And his many books, such as Lann and Ghita, first published by Ken Pierce books, were mainstays for me for many, many years. Hermes has been collecting much of Frank's work lately, so it's good Frank was around to see this resurgence in his oeuvre.

Numerous industry professionals relayed news of Thorne's passing on Facebook, including comic book writer Paul Levitz. "Bidding farewell to Frank Thorne, an artist who progressively developed his style into a more and more personal expression. I had the pleasure of working with Frank in his later DC days, when he did some magnificent work for the mystery titles, and stepped in to pencil for Jim Aparo on The Spectre, matching his storytelling approach carefully to Jim's," Levitz wrote.

"But Frank had the best time of his career on Marvel's Red Sonja, who he made both powerful and sexy," he continued. "He was probably the first working mainstream [artist] to revel in [cosplay], becoming the Wizard who acted with Wendy Pini's Sonja at show after show. A man of talent, charm and great wit. Good journey onward, Frank, you will be long remembered."
