The Burroughs Bulletin, new Patrick J. Jones, Neil Gaiman, Batgirl, Nellie Bly, Harley Quinn and lots more!

Good items and good variety this week. Patrick J. Jones' new Art Technique book comes with a color signed bookplate. I think we have an exclusive on a very special issue of The Burroughs Bulletin, #100. I like the new Batgirl Omnibus, and Nellie Bly looks like a fun read. New replica editions, Kubert's Tor, and H. Rider Haggard's legendary novel, She. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman and The Hunt for Harley are both very appealing. And there's much more, plus plentiful News and Notes.

Art Books

Signed Color Bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. By Patrick J. Jones. Foreword by Jeff Miracola. This detailed, user-friendly oil painting workbook is a companion to Patrick's Sci-fi & Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques, and features previously unpublished artworks. It's as much a superlative art book, as his past books have been, as it is a how-to by a master painter. Patrick leads us into his studio once again to study further the art of layers, blending, and glazing with oils and uses as examples his latest fantasy works. Includes photos of his work with his model. Some nudity. Korero Press, 2021....More.

THE INCREDIBLE NELLIE BLY Journalist, Investigator, Feminist, and Philanthropist
Recommended. By Luciana Cimino. Art by Sergio Algozzino. Born in 1864, Nellie Bly was a woman who did not allow herself to be defined by the time she lived in; she rewrote the narrative and made her own way. Luciana Cimino's meticulously researched graphic-novel biography tells Bly's story through Miriam, a fictionalized female student at the Columbia School of Journalism in 1921. While interviewing the famous journalist, Miriam learns not only about Bly's more sensational adventures, but also about her focus on self-reliance from an early age, the scathing letter to the editor that jump-started her career as a newspaper columnist, and her dedication to the empowerment of women. New printing. Collects #1-12, 1941-42. Highly Recommended. By Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Syd Shores and Al Avison. Here are the monumental first dozen wild issues that created and defined Captain America, created in the midst of World War II. Plus more than previous collections (and less expensive): S&K left with #10, but the talents that carried Cap on did an outstanding job. Issues #11 and 12 include art by the great Syd Shores as well as the excellent Al Avison who continued to work on Cap all throughout the 1940s. Cap tried to hide his fighting alter-ego behind the disguise of a lowly Army private, while fighting Hitler, Nazis and the Japanese, and all manner of baddies including the Red Skull. But a big part of these fat 64-page issues was also horror and monsters to be dealt with, like a superhero version of Tales from the Crypt!! Marvel, 2021....More.

Coming in June

Highly Recommended. Edited by Dian Hanson. Silly Fool Comics fills the final page in this final volume, with a devilish creature telling the anguished Crumb, "YOU Will Soon Be DEAD!" He was a mere 67, but in his self-absorbed way was already obsessing about death, when not making intimate and loving portraits of his wife Aline and all the other women who'd tormented his libido since boyhood. Most impressive in this book are his historic tableau, some single page, others multi-page strips, including Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England, My Secret Life by "Walter," Rough Women of the Dark Ages and The Apache Dance, from a 1930s Parisian postcard. News & Notes

Hermes Publishing Delays

This publisher has long suffered from production delays…sometimes a year or more. For instance, Gladys Parker was due to ship in Fall 2019, and now is still hung up with no firm due date, 18 months later. In earlier days, our system allowed us to take your order and only bill you once an item shipped.

Since our new software necessitates payment with your order on coming items, we no longer feel right collecting your money when it's nearly a sure thing items will be delayed. So our new policy with Hermes Publishing is we will not announce any of their books until they are in stock here. Rest assured, we will continue to handle all of them, including the popular Phantom series. And as I said previously, getting reorders has gotten exponentially harder, so we will slowly be forced to drop older titles, whether they are out of print or just caught in unreliable fulfillment systems of our supplier.

We're cancelling and refunding orders for Peter Wheat Volume 2, Johnny Hazard Volume 9, and The Art of Popeye, all indefinitely delayed.

PS Artbooks Sale

I just sent in a reorder for several titles we were starting to run low on. Unfortunately, our U.S. source is now OUT of virtually every title. We've marked all these as out of print and we do have good supply of many, at least several months worth. But be warned, these will be slowly selling out just like the last bunch we had a couple years ago. See PSSALE on the website.

Frank Thorne

Dynamite just resolicited Frank Thorne's Red Sonja 45th Anniverary Statue, a “Berserker Variant” edition of just 250. With Frank just passed away, I thought we ought to bring in a few, and they will be here in just a couple weeks. Just a heads-up in case you want to get one reserved, I don't know how long they will last. See our website for more of Frank's work. And once again, Rest in Peace Frank, one of the good guys.

Overseas Shipments

As you may have been reading, everything coming into the country is experiencing delays. And most books are now printed overseas. The new Flesk Books are in the port, to be unloaded, and we expect to have them ready to ship by April 10-15th. That's Al Williamson, Xenozoic Tales and Carbon 4. This has also affected other shipments, for instance reorders from Book Palace on Illustrators Quarterly, Fortunino Mantania, etc. I hope this isn't having a similar effect on our shipments overseas to our foreign customers, but so far, we're not hearing complaints.

Now just today (Wednesday) they've reported a container ship blocking the Suez Canal, wedged in sideways. Hey, teaches you to roll with the punches. At least you're not on board on of those hundreds of ships now idling on both sides of the canal!!

Heavy Metal

Speaking of late material, we've been waiting months for not only issue reorders, but for a new issue. I can't figure out what's going on with these folks and there's nothing online. But just last week we were told our reorders were being shipped out, so cross your fingers. And an interview I just read online, posted March 10, indicated a new issue was we'll see.

Collector's Supplies Pictured

We've finally made scans of many of our collector supplies, many of which are now coming from manufacturer BCW. Check them out. And we're bringing in tall comic book dividers, for you collectors (like me) than like to organize your books. We're out of just one right now: Silver Age/Regular Plastic Bags. Probably due to overseas shipping delays. But everything else is in stock and we do make a point to have all collector supplies available all the time.

Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the “artist's artist” through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features.TwoMorrows, 2021.  ...More.

I'm really thrilled about how nice the bookplate that we did turned out. We printed it oversized, 7x10, the size of a comic on glossy heavy stock. It looks superb. See it above in our banner ad or get a larger image by clicking here, it's one of the additional scans. Note: If you bought the hardcover edition from us, back in 2017, we'd be happy to send you one of these bookplates for your copy. Add it to any regular order (we're not sending it separately, it's already free!). Put it in the Notes field, or ask for it when you call your order in.

Recommended. By Pablo Dura. Art by Carlos Esquembre. This is the story of African American Oliver Law, who with other black American citizens volunteered to go fight in Spain. From France they sneaked across the border, and with little training, fought in the Spanish Civil War against the fascist faction leader, General Francisco Franco. Law would eventually go on to lead the entire fully integrated brigade — a third of which lost their lives against the German and Italian-backed Franco forces. Law also fought and protested for worker rights in the 1930s United States. Caliber, 2021....More.

ROY V HUNT A Retrospective
Recommended. First Fandom Experience presents the work of fan & semi-pro artist Roy Vernon Hunt. Hunt lived and worked in Denver, Colorado from 1914 until his passing in 1986. His first published art appeared in the fanzine The Alchemist in February 1940. He was a founding member of the Colorado Fantasy Society, a group formed to organize the 1941 World Science Fiction Convention in Denver. But he went on to do much more fanzine work, book covers for early small press publishers, and much more. Hunt took his own path, specializing in monsters, Lovecraft and otherwise, sometimes in the style of Lee Coye Brown, and Art Deco-inspired spaceships and sci-fi. He was an excellent designer. Includes his revealing essay on early sci-fi fantasy artists, from 1943. First Fandom Experience, 2021.  ...More.

This massive history recounts the stories of the first active science fiction fans — pioneers who went on to lead the growth of speculative literature for the next several decades. New Printing. By Keith Dallas, Jason Sacks et al. Art by Todd McFarlane. The American Comic Book Chronicles continues its ambitious series of full-color hardcovers, where TwoMorrows' top authors document every decade of comic book history from the 1940s to today! Jason Sacks and Keith Dallas coordinated this volume, covering all the pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes details of the Bill Clinton years! The 1990s was the decade when Marvel Comics sold 8.1 million copies of an issue of the X-Men, saw its superstar creators form their own company, cloned Spider-Man, and went bankrupt. It was when Superman died, Batman had his back broken, and the runaway success of Neil Gaiman's Sandman led to DC Comics' Vertigo line of adult comic books. Kirby at War - Coming in May

1956-65. Highly Recommended. King of the comics art form, Jack Kirby needs no introduction. He was an architect of the Marvel Universe, but his contributions extended far beyond just super heroes. A combat veteran during World War II, Kirby brings hard-earned gritty realism to Atlas's Battleground #14 and Battle Comics #64-70, while Kirby and Stan Lee co-created Sgt. Fury in 1963. Here are #1-8, 10-20 and 25. Plus: 25 vintage and ultra-rare Atlas/Marvel romance titles, 1959-63 — many restored directly from Kirby's original art! Marvel, 2021. Due: May. ...More.

My Highest Recommendation. Art by Russ Heath, John Severin, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Syd Shores, Don Heck et al. Edited by Michael J. Vassallo. Fifty hard-hitting stories from Atlas, the company that became Marvel Comics. Each one hand-picked by Vassallo, a comics historian and world-renowned authority on Timely/Atlas. Marvel published more war titles than anyone in the industry, between 1951 and 1960, and were strongly influenced, at their best, by Kurtzman's EC stories. If you think EC and DC were the only publishers doing poignant, powerful and well-drawn war stories, read this and have your head turned around. This is good. Dead Reckoning, 2020....More.

Our Highest Recommendation. By Robert Kanigher, Garth Ennis et al. Art by Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, Alex Toth, John Severin, Jack Kirby et al. In this new collection, DC is recognizing nearly 80 years of comic book war stories beginning with the origin of Blackhawk in Military #1, 1941, Boy Commandos by S&K in 1942, on to the beginnings of Sgt. Rock, the origin of Enemy Ace, The Losers, The Unknown Soldier, the very first Haunted Tank, and my favorite piece, a graphic novel length War in Heaven, bringing Enemy Ace into World War II and reluctant combat to defend his German homeland, beautifully told and illustrated by Ennis and Russ Heath. Powerful stuff, first page to last. DC Comics, 2020....More.

Hard Cover, 7x10, 352pg, Full Color
$39.99 $34.99

Our Highest Recommendation. By Archie Goodwin, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, Alex Toth et al. These stories are among the best comics stories about war ever published. Written and edited by Hall of Famer Archie Goodwin, and drawn by fellow comic book Hall of Famers Frank Frazetta, Wallace Wood, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Gene Colan. Building on the tradition of Harvey Kurtzman's much-lauded EC titles, Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, Goodwin's stories offer striking personal insights into the minds and emotions of individual soldiers and civilians. Covering wars from ancient times through Vietnam, Blazing Combat, unlike much of the popular media of the time, underscored the very madness of war itself in starkly personal terms. Prince Charming is in over his head and must call on the help of a Fable character not seen in these pages for far too long...and this is one wish he can't take back. Lives of the Great Occultists by Kevin Jackson and Hunt Emerson

I really enjoyed this, I read every single bio (and there are a lot of them). Allow yourself several evenings to make your way through this, it's highly detailed and dense with jokes and spoofs. Hunt Emerson could have easily worked for Mad back in the EC days, his work is wonderful and funny. there's a lot of inside jokes here, too. -Bud

The History of EC Comics

This is very close to being out of print—the publisher has less than 200 copies left of the original printing of 5000. Generally Taschen does not reprint these XXL volumes; more likely, we'll see a dramatically smaller-sized volume in 2022 or 2023. Meanwhile, we still have a good supply AND you can still get the color, extra-illustrated bookplate (pictured right), drawn by Angelo Torres and signed by the author, Grant Geissman. Our Highest Recommendation.
