Pop Culture

The '60s and '70s were transformative eras for film, and also for a young film buff like myself. 1968 was a particularly impactful year for 6-year-old me, seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes literally days apart with both films releasing on April 3rd of that year. After that, I was a sci-fi kid for life! You'll find many more unforgettable films like them in these two illustrated hardcovers, perfect for cinephiles!

From Mary Poppins to the films of Jean-Luc Godard, this book gathers the must-see films of this transformational era, shaped by innovation, Spaghetti Westerns, sci-fi star turns, and important progress in female characterization. Batman!

Two new DC Omnibuses came in this week, and they're both packed with some great Batman comics. The "New 52" continuity reinvented the Dark Knight following the Flashpoint crossover event. Writer Tony S. Daniel brought new life to Batman and his Rogues' Gallery of enemies, and introduced the Court of Owls, setting the stage for major changes to the Gotham landscape and the life of Bruce Wayne. And Batman is reborn again (and again) in very different circumstances in a collection of DC's Elseworlds tales. If you're a Bat-fan, both volumes are worth adding to your shelf!

ELSEWORLDS BATMAN OMNIBUS 1
Collects Batman Annual #18; Detective Comics Annual #7 and much more. Step into the shadows of alternate realities where Gotham’s protector is reborn again and again in twisted, wondrous, and unexpected forms. Elseworlds: Batman Omnibus Vol. 1 collects some of the most imaginative and genre-bending tales in DC history, where familiar myths are fractured and reassembled into something entirely new. Witness Batman hunt Jack the Ripper in Victorian London, wield a Green Lantern ring, battle Dracula as a creature of the night, and face terror as a Frankenstein-like experiment gone wrong. With appearances from Catwoman, Robin, Houdini, and even an apocalyptic Brotherhood of the Bat, this omnibus showcases the boundless creativity of the Elseworlds line, where the only rule is that there are no rules. DC Comics, 2026. Rush Service and International shipping could require an additional charge. ...More.

Comic Strips & Archives

There's plenty of great comic strip and comic book collections being offered this week, including a fun volume of Alley Oop Sundays, and Volumes 2 & 3 (Vol. 1 is unfortunately out of print) of DC's Milestone Compendiums collecting their '90s family of titles created outside of DC editorial and overseen by co-founders Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek Dingle. At the time, Milestone was a bold new approach to comics. Although it ended too soon, its shared-world setting and characters recently returned in the buzzworthy one-shot, The Dakota Incident #1 — a spin-off of the New History of the DC Universe (NEWHIH) graphic novel — which sets the stage for the Milestone characters to return as part of the modern DCU.

Jack Katz Art Show

Deanna Horvath, a former student of The First Kingdom artist Jack Katz, is producing a documentary on his extensive career in comic books and painting. Deanna attended Jack’s art classes and is a college professor herself; she filmed an extensive interview with me (Bud) some time ago.

In her words:
This includes some of the artwork and materials found during my research on his life and work. The ultimate project is the documentary film which is still in production. In the meantime, it's time to show the stuff I’ve pulled together during this sabbatical process.

The Show details:
Deanna’s Sabbatical Show on Jack Katz: The show runs from 3/16 to 3/27/26, and 4/6 to 4/7/26 (the Monday & Tuesday after Spring Break) — open during normal school hours.

A reception for the show is being held Saturday 3/21 from 12-3pm, food and drinks served. Bud Plant has provided copies of Jack Katz's The First Kingdom as giveaways (while supplies last). The reception is located at:

Las Positas College
3000 Campus Hill Dr.
Livermore, CA 94551.
