GO FIGURE Figurative Social Surrealist Paintings
By Guy Colwell. Go Figure collects 44 “social surrealist” figurative paintings, spanning 1987-2023. All are in eye-popping color: many depict a crowd in observational tableaux, each figure a character by virtue of dress, body language, and interactions with each other, animals, and their setting. Other paintings reflect Colwell’s wide travels, and still others are surreal — such as “Junior and the Legs” (2023), which shows a young man strumming a guitar on stage, accompanied by disembodied women’s limbs. Each image has a narrative and a moral purpose — often, one figure bravely moves forward, despite a hostile crowd. In Guy Colwell’s world, no individual could ever be an island, just another part of a rich ecosystem. Fantagraphics, 2025....More.

SKY MASTERS OF THE SPACE FORCE The Complete Sunday Strips in Color Hurt
New Edition, larger size with 16 bonus pages in color. Our Highest Recommendation. By Dave Wood. Art by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood. The Sky Masters newspaper strip is one of the most fascinating and obscure works by comics legend Jack Kirby. Created and developed by Kirby with writer Dave Wood at the beginning of 1958 while Kirby was working for National (DC), the Sky Masters daily strip debuted on September 8 of that year. Five months later, on February 8, 1959, the color Sunday strips arrived featuring a totally independent story line from the dailies. The strip narrates, with a realistic approach, the adventures of Major Sky Masters during the early days of space exploration in the late 1950s, just as a new front opened in the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.: a frenzied space race. News & Notes

Bud is Retiring—sort of—in 2026!

Ok, I threatened to do this back in 2012 but I couldn’t quite pull the trigger. We downsized from 11 people to just a couple of us, then we changed our minds and kept things going! Today, 75 catalogs later, it’s time to get serious again.

I turned 73 this last May and I’d like to have more options in my future. This is the 55th year for this business, which I started as a college freshman back in 1970. I’d already been a partner in two comic stores by then, and in 1972 John Barrett and I created Comics & Comix, which became a chain of seven Northern California stores.

I’ve been living and breathing this business for a long time…but I’ve loved it and I remain very passionate about comic books and illustration in general. I’m just ready to pull back from bringing in all the new books, writing descriptions, dealing with all those day to day issues all businesses have to deal with…including my wonderful eight employees, also, I’m afraid.

The staff here already knows it’s time to make a change; at least two of them plan to retire when I do. My other guys are great and will land on their feet. Anne and I plan to keep the Rare Books portion of the business going; we’ll probably move all the books over to her website (our current website is quite costly). We still have thousands of books to catalog from the various collections we’ve acquired, such as Jim Vadeboncoeur’s and Bob Foster’s.

But, I am officially putting Bud Plant Comic Art, aka Bud’s Art Books, up for sale. I’ve already been in talks with Buddy Saunders at MyComicShop.com and that is one possibility. If you can help me get the word out, maybe another buyer or two will step up who would like to carry on what I’ve done over the past 55 years.

Meanwhile, please rest assured that it’s business as usual for the rest of 2025. We’ll keep bringing in new items as we always have, right into December. But we currently plan to stop ordering new items slated for 2026 unless we find a buyer. We’ll also begin dropping more older items than we normally would, so we’ll have less backlist items available by the end of the year. That is something you should be aware of. I already discontinue items regularly, as you know.

So this will only be a partial retirement—I’ll step back from doing printed catalogs, newsletters and weekly emails and such for new items. I hope we’ll find someone to take the business forward.

Anne and I will continue to exhibit at book shows and the occasional comics show, we’ll continue to sell out of print books on her website and in occasional emails [budplantandhutchisonbooks.com]. If we find a buyer, I’ll work with them into 2026 to make a transition as smooth as possible for everyone. Get the word out for us, okay?

~Bud

In a career spanning over 60 years, he drew newspaper strips: The Seekers; Danielle; George and Lynne; Modesty Blaise; Eartha; Jane; and Psycops to name but a few. Although always in demand, John found time between his numerous long term work commitments to help John Dakin in his quest to revive the British newspaper comic strip. Unfortunately this revitalization never happened, but over a 15 year period, both Johns created sexy (and often unclothed) new characters — spies, assassins, hookers, artist models...these are full color pages that until now have barely been seen by the public. By Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, & John Romita Sr. He’s one of the most enduring characters across all popular culture — and this collection of The Incredible Hulk #1-6 along with his next appearances in Tales to Astonish, is where it all began. The lavish reproduction of the original comics brings Hulk to rampaging yet sorrowful life alongside original artwork, rare photographs, and ephemera. SPECTRE — THE WRATH OF THE SPECTRE Omnibus
New printing. Our Highest Recommendation. 1966-81. By Gardner Fox & Murphy Anderson, Michael Fleisher & Jim Aparo, Neal Adams et al. Originally introduced in 1940 and co-created by Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman, the Spectre was a green-caped, white-skinned, all-powerful demi-god who meted out his own version of justice — very grim justice! DC's grim arbiter resurfaced in the 1960s, brought back by the dream-team of Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson in Showcase in 1966, then in The Brave and the Bold, in ten issues of his own title, also by Fox and Anderson, and ultimately returned to the all-powerful 1940s version dark Spectre as reimagined by Fleisher and Aparo in Adventure Comics #431-440. What we have here are ALL of those great Silver Age appearances!!! DC Comics, 2025....More.

SUPERMAN The Golden Age Omnibus Volume 1
New printing. Collects Action Comics #1-31, Superman #1-7 and New York World's Fair Comics #1-2, 1938-40. Our Highest Recommendation. By Jerry Siegel. Art by Joe Shuster, with Jack Burnley and Wayne Boring. Foreword and afterword by none other than Jim Steranko. These groundbreaking stories cementing Superman's place as the medium's most enduring hero are gathered for the first time in this massive, expansive collection. This collects every single Superman story from the fabled origin on for three full years...1938 to December, 1940! Here is the original Superman, who began as a heroic crusader who could only leap, not fly, and was operating way outside the law. Police were shooting at him as often as bad guys. And he was not above intimidating, and sometimes summarily dealing out harsh justice as the lone vigilante he was. DC Comics, 2025....More.

TALES OF THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER Volume 2
Collects #6-10, 1957-58. Highly Recommended. Courtesy of the Traveler's creator, Steve Ditko, this was the cool outre title of 1957/8. What it may have lacked in big budgets, The Mysterious Traveler made up for with offbeat stories, spear-headed by a brilliant young Ditko at his best, creating two covers and SIXTEEN amazing stories. You can see signs of the Lee/Ditko work to come, but I actually prefer these, with more text, more developed plots, and not as dependent on snap endings. The Traveler is a surreal narrator, moving in and out of each story. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

FROM HERE TO INSANITY MAGAZINE Volume 1
Originally published in 1957. Recommended. Chock full of silly stories and artwork, mimicking the style of MAD Magazine. Steve Ditko contributes a humorous three-page tale about a homely crooner named Beverly Kaflin. Other contributors include Bill Ward's cover and two stories (signed Bob McCartney), Joe Pena, Bob Weber, and Basil Wolverton. Mad evolved from a comic book to a magazine, and the rest is history. Charlton was never one to see success without a stab at it, and this was their effort. With the next issue the title changed to Crazy, Man, Crazy and lasted two more issues. Lots of racy good-girl art, spoofs of movies and television, and all popular subjects of the day. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

THE SINCEREST FORM OF PARODY
New Printing. Highly Recommended. By Jack Davis, Will Elder, Norman Maurer, Carl Hubbell, William Overgard, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, Bill Everett, Al Hartley, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito, Hy Fleischman, Jay Disbrow, Howard Nostrand, and Bob Powell. When Mad became a surprise hit as a comic book in 1953 other comics publishers were quick to jump onto the bandwagon, eventually bringing out a dozen imitations with titles like Flip, Whack, Nuts, Crazy, Wild, Riot, Eh, Unsane, Bughouse, and Get Lost. This collects the best and the funniest material from these comics, including parodies of movies (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, From Here To Eternity), TV shows (What's My Line, The Late Show), comic strips (Little Orphan Annie, Rex Morgan), novels (I, the Jury), plays (Come Back, Little Sheba), advertisements (Rheingold Beer, Charles Atlas), classic literature ("The Lady or the Tiger"), and history (Pancho Villa). Some of this is so good you'd have thought it was done in Mad! Some didn't even try for parody, but instead published odd, goofy, off-the-wall stories. Fantagraphics, 2025....More.

MODERN COMICS Volume 1
Collects #44-46, 1945 -46. Recommended. By Al Bryant, Gill Fox, Al Stahl, Harry Sahle et al. With the war coming to an end, Military was retitled Modern. Blackhawk, Death Patrol, Pvt. Dogtag and PT Boat strips continued. Pin-up girl Cho Who came on board, and soon, in #53, Bill Ward's infamous sexpot Torchy began her run here. Blackhawk and the team continue their daring escapades in land, sea and air, here still battling the Japanese. Modern carried on to issue #102 in 1950, while Blackhawk headlined here and also in his own title, which continued uninterrupted right into the Silver Age. PS Artbooks, 2025....More.

GAMEMASTERS The Comic Book History of Roleplaying Games
Recommended. The story of the tabletop’s triumph even in our digital age begins in the day of actual sword-wielding warriors, leading right up to the fireball-casting avatars of today. New York Times-bestselling and award-winning comics creators Fred Van Lente and Tom Fowler take you on an incredible journey from the mists of the past to the screen-lit present, showing not just how these games work and why we love them, but what they can tell us about ourselves. Very nicely illustrated. I'm not even a gaming person but it looks pretty fun to me, immersing you in the various fantasy games and all their characters. This would make a great gift for any table gamer. Clover Press, 2025....More.

TERRY AND THE PIRATES The Master Collection Volume 11 1945
Reunion in Indo-China. Highly Recommended. By Milton Caniff. "Things really begin to happen in the early '40s. Terry Lee grows up to be a Flight Officer in the Air Force and, played against the background of a World War, takes on considerable dimension. Now Caniff was in his element. Terry was no longer a mere comic strip. It was a war novel." - Jim Steranko. It’s a new year of reunions, not resolutions — Terry and Pat join forces! COMMANDO PRESENTS BRADDOCK OF BOMBER COMMAND Volume 1
By Ferg Handley, Gilbert Dalton. Art by Keith Shone and Morhain Defeo. Cover by Keith Burns. In 1952, The Rover introduced a new hero — Matt Braddock, bomber pilot! For years he entertained readers with prose and comic stories alike. Then, in 2019, Braddock dive-bombed into the pages of Commando, the world's longest-running war comic. That issue, as well as selected original stories and art from DC Thomson's Rover, Red Dagger and The Victor, have been collected here. 180 pages of classic Braddock, part 1 of "I Flew With Braddock" prose story, behind-the-scenes looks at the original stories, iconic covers and spreads that featured in some of DC Thomson's most legendary titles. Bond is assigned to retrieve the lethal compound and finds himself in a race against friend and foe alike, from the icy cold of Earth's orbit to the endless wastes of the deserts below. News & Notes

Once again we are in the process of making room for new items. When we discontinue items, you’ll find "ALMOST GONE" at the beginning of the description. I realize it may just be a bad time to be dropping titles—with the uncertainty regarding Diamond Comics Distributors, comic stores may be unable to restock many titles until a new system is in place. That leaves us as one of the few reliable sources for many items. But, we can’t count on orders coming our way; if they do, we’ll sell out faster.

For example, Diamond had never kept any PS Artbooks in stock, making us nearly the only source for them as soon as your local comic shop sells out their initial stock. And that's one of the publishers we are slimming down; I’m dropping many of the older facsimile titles, such as Phantom Lady, Punch, Green Lama, Lars of Mars, and Suspense. I’m also dropping slower selling softcover and hardcover editions, such as Adventures Into the Unknown, Gorgo, Black Magic, Forbidden Worlds, Airboy, etc. So, something to be aware of as you browse for items, if you see these it may be your last chance to order.

I’m also dropping the ERB Inc new editions of the Tarzan volumes, up to Vol 20. Both individual book and sets of 4. We only have 2-3 of each left as I write this. I’ll keep the last four volumes and the set of Vol 21-24 in stock, since these are the latest. Many collectors may have never gotten these, some were not as commonly printed as the earlier titles (several are my favorites, such as Tarzan and the Foreign Legion and Tarzan and the Castaways. Castaways was Burroughs’ final Tarzan novel, written in 1939. This edition has the six Frazetta plates from the 1964 hardcover edition!

The Barsoom/Mars new editions just started, so these will remain available individually or in the set of 3. ERB Inc has announced the next two titles coming soon.
