ROY G. KRENKEL FATHER OF HEROIC FANTASY A Centennial Celebration
Our Highest Recommendation. By AndrewSteven Damsits, Barry Klugerman. Roy G. Krenkel was one of the most renowned fantasy artists of the 20th century. His far-reaching influence on--and work with--artists like Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Michael Wm. Kaluta and Jeffrey Jones, to name but a few, was immeasurable and cannot be overstated. Krenkel illustrated numerous works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard and others. But many of Krenkel's works--what he called his "Doodles," as well as full-blown paintings and illustrations--often were unpublished and never seen by even his biggest fans. IDW, 2019...More.

Krazy Kat

KRAZY & IGNATZ 1916-1918
Geroge Herriman Library. Oversized. Highly Recommended. By George Herriman. For nearly 30 years, George Herriman's hilarious, poetic masterpiece graced the Sunday pages of America's newspapers. MATTÉO Book Two 1917-1918
From the creator of The Reprieve & Flight of the Raven. Recommended. By Jean-Pierre Gibrat. In this tour-de-force from award winning writer/artist Jean-Pierre Gibrat, the honor and glory sought in the Great War (seen in Book One of this series) have become mutilated and blurred memories. The October Revolution in Russia creates hope in the hearts of the oppressed and draws in Mattéo, the son of a Spanish anarchist. He sees his beloved Juliet for a brief but memorable moment, and the next day, with his father's friend Gervasio, Mattéo departs for Petrograd with camera in hand. But he may very well become victim of the disputes and differences between the various factions leading the Russian revolution. IDW, 2019...More.

DINOMANIA The Lost Art of Winsor McCay
The Secret Origins of King Kong, and the Urge to Destroy New York! Highly Recommended. By Ulrich Merkl. An impressive, king-sized book that was rather expensive originally, but now a true bargain. Merkl explores the influences McCay brought to this genre--including McCay's own Gertie the Dinosaur animated shorts-- the animation in 1933's King Kong, tracing our love of dinosaurs and monster movies down through the decades. Wonderful reproduction, dozens of previously unseen "lost" full color McCay pages from 1937, plus wonderful "Dino" strips direct from proofs. Breathtakingly designed, each page is overflowing with amazing imagery--most rarely seen or never seen before. Very, very cool. Fantagraphics, 2015. Out of Print....More.

PALEOART Visions of The Prehistoric Past 1830-1980

In this unprecedented (and enormous), new book, writer Zoë Lescaze and artist Walton Ford present the astonishing history of paleoart from 1830 to 1990, including eight fold-out pages. These are modern visions of prehistory: stunning paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, mosaics, and murals that mingle scientific fact with unbridled fantasy. Here is an in-depth look at this neglected niche of art history, also revealing how artists projected their own aesthetic, rendering the primordial past with dashes of Romanticism, Impressionism, Japonisme, and Art Nouveau, among other influences. The little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman, their first project after leaving DC Comics. Limited, 125! Recommended. By George Evans, Martin Thall et al. Captain Video was one of the very first science fiction programs in the early days of television...a long, successful run from 1949 to 1955. Here are collected twelve wonderful Uncle Scrooge one-page strips, from the back pages of the 1950s Dell Scrooge comic books. You get a gag a month, and panels of wonderful Barks art. And a collectible to boot, since these were done in Europe, imported by ourselves and probably very few others at the time. Glossy paper, full color, spiral bound. Brockman, 1996. . TRUE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID
Recommended. By Rick Geary. William H. Bonney went from cowboy and rancher's gunslinger to a pure outlaw, dodging justice in New Mexico before it was even a state. He was charming, fun-loving, often present at social events, quite appealing to the ladies. But he had no compunction about coldly killing a man, a sheriff, a deputy—anyone who got in the way of his rustling cattle or horses for an illicit living. He also proved hard to keep in jail once he was caught. It is probably his daring escapes from jails that made him most famous, and this is the main focus of this biography. NBM, 2018...More.

GOYA The Terrible Sublime
By El Torres. Art by Fran Galán. An original Spanish graphic novel, now in English. From the mind of the terror master El Torres comes a terrifying story that brings readers into the artist's world of madness and dark paintings, populated by recognizable figures like Manuel Godoy and the Duchess of Alba, in cobweb-shrouded palaces with beautiful grotesques living in the shadows. This unique story melds the artist's unique style and vision with the story of a man plagued by unreality, dreadful images of witchcraft and pure evil. He knows that he must not fall into what lurks beyond the dream of reason. Pegasus, 2019...More.

SILENCE OF MALKA
Highly Recommended. By Jorge Zentner. Art by Rubén Pellejero. A beautifully told story highlighted by superlative artwork, which reminds us of Alex Toth's work. Coloring is simply incredible also. A sweeping and poignant story of Jews fleeing the Russian pogroms at the end of the 19th century, from the perspective of young Malka as she grows up. For the family of the little red-head, trading Russia for the Argentine pampas isn't so easy. But it goes pretty well for young Malka. But mixed in with several other interesting other subplots is the one big one. A "friendly" golem, to make ends meet in the fields. But it all goes incredibly wrong in a surprising twist. With his characteristic grim sarcasm, Gibson takes us to war-torn 1945 Berlin, where RAF officer Naomi Givens must persevere against inconceivable, ruthless future forces, with the fates of epochs at stake. MARY BLAIR'S UNIQUE FLAIR
The Girl Who Became One of the Disney Legends. Recommended. By Amy Nevesky. Art by Brittney Lee. A lovely children's picture book celebrating the career of Disney's most famous female creator. Even as a child, Mary Blair loved color, and all she wanted to do was to make art. But becoming an artist wasn't easy. Mary worked hard to enter contests and earn a spot at a school for the arts. She even had to work hard to find her place at the Walt Disney Studios. When she joined Walt's trip to South America, Mary had never seen such color. She collected that color and used it in her concept art for Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, and even the It's a Small World attraction at Disneyland. Disney Press, 2019...More.
