AESOP'S FABLES IN RHYME FOR LITTLE PHILOSOPHERS
Highly Recommended. By John Martin. Art by George Carlson. Generations have learned from these ancient animal stories: fine feathers don't necessarily make fine birds; slow and steady helps win the race; and it's a mistake to count your chickens before they're hatched. Twenty-four timeless fables, first published in this format in 1924, complemented by wonderful drawings (ornately detailed silhouettes in two-color) by the artist who created Jingle Jangle Tales and the Pie-Faced Prince in the Golden Age--Harlan Ellison's favorite stories! Dover, 2014...More.

AMAZING WORLD OF CARMINE INFANTINO
Highly Recommended. By Carmine Infantino with J. David Spurlock. Infantino revolutionized DC with his co-creation of The Flash, the "New Look" Batman, Adam Strange, Deadman and nearly every other character DC published during the Silver Age. He laid out most of DC's covers from the late '60s to the early '70s, and worked on the original Christopher Reeve Superman movie. Lots of classic, rare and unpublished art spanning Infantino's career pre-DC to his most recent work. An autobiographical retrospective packed with anecdotes. Vanguard, 2001...More.

ANNOTATED PETER PAN The Centenial Edition
Highly Recommended. By J. M. Barrie. Edited by Maria Tatar. One hundred years after J. M. Barrie published the novel Peter and Wendy, Maria Tatar revisits a story that, like Alice in Wonderland, bridges the generations, animating both adults and children with its kinetic energy. The adventures of the Darling children with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell in Neverland are the seminal tale of escape and fantasy. This brilliantly designed volume has period photographs, full-color images by iconic illustrators, commentary on stage and screen versions, and an array of supplementary material, including Barrie's screenplay for a silent film. BOUND TO BE MODERN
By Kristina Lundblad. The most comprehensive study to date on the emergence and function of publishers' cloth bindings. It brings together issues of aesthetics, technique, economy, and social change in order to explain why publishers in the 19th century began to have their books bound in ever-more-decorative covers. This traces the history of publishers' bindings in a Swedish context --but also makes clear that binding art was an international affair, with machines, designs, and ideas crossing borders. CONAN RED NAILS ORIGINAL ART ARCHIVES Volume 1

For the first time, presented in the size of the original art, this oversize hardbound edition faithfully captures the appearance of the actual pages as drawn in 1973 and allows you to view each page individually as it should be seen. Captures every detail of this 58-page story, amazing and quintessential work by the young Barry Windsor-Smith as he was pouring his soul into these adaptations of Howard's finest stories. ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY #1
Highly Recommended. This issue leads off with a fascinating article on Denis McLoughlin. I'd not heard of him before but now I'm a big fan. Denis was responsible for a long career of wonderful art. He is well-known in England in the comics arena for his superb western themed covers and stories for British comics annuals, particular the Buffalo Bill Annual, beginning in 1950. But he is as big or bigger in the world of vintage paperback covers. His "Boardman Bloodhound" titles, almost 300 of them starting in 1947, are a perfect counterpart to the powerful artwork on, in the U.S. Dell "Mapbacks" and Popular Library covers. Denis was a master of hard-boiled themes, but also created absolutely amazing cheesecake. Book Palace, 2012...More.

LETTERING & GRAPHIC DESIGN of F.G. COOPER
Recommended. By Leslie Cabarga. Fred Cooper (1883-1961) was one of America's great cartoonists and designers, and a founding member of the Society of Illustrators. In fact, he designed the lettering on the plaque at the Society's Manhattan headquarters. Lavishly illustrated with many pages in 2-color, the book displays a wide variety of Cooper's versatile work: type design, cover and title-page design, advertising pieces and more. MARC DAVIS Walt Disney's Renaissance Man
Highly Recommended. Walt Disney once said of Marc Davis, "Marc can do story, he can do character, he can animate, he can design shows for me. All I have to do is tell him what I want and it's there! He's my Renaissance man." As such, Davis touched nearly every aspect of Disney during his tenure. He began as an animator, whose supporting work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi inspired Walt to promote him to full animator. Disney, 2014...More.

PANDEMONIUM BLVD The Exotic, Exquisite, Erratic, and Surreal Art of Bob Burden Signed
Signed & numbered. By Bob Burden. Bob Burden was one of the founding members of the Comic Book New Wave of the early 1980s. His surrealist superhero Flaming Carrot was the prototype for a new generation of blue-collar, second-string, mill-town superheroes called The Mystery Men, which eventually evolved into a big-budget Hollywood movie. Burden continues to create, experiment, and "kibitz about" with his deranged, outre art and cutting-edge writing--foraging away with no regard to aptitude, tradition or basic human decency. MADE IN JAPAN Transistor Radios of the 1950s and 1960s
Warehouse find, 1993. Recommended. By Roger Handy, Maureen Erbe, Henry Blackham and Aileen Antonier. Before the boom-box, the Walkman, or the compact disc player, there was the transistor radio. For many in the fifties and sixties, the transistor radio was an indispensable part of daily life--for catching a ball game, grooving to Top-40 tunes, or listening to late night radio under the covers after "lights-out." In order to attract the American consumer, Japanese designers borrowed motifs from automobiles, coffee shops, graphics, fine art, and other elements of American culture. Here is that story, plus a wonderful illustrated look at all the coolest designs. Note: Bumped corners, smudged covers. Chronicle, 1993...More.

BUCK ROGERS COMPLETE MURPHY ANDERSON SUNDAYS
1958-59. Highly Recommended. By Rick Yager, Fritz Leiber, and Judith Merrill. Art by Murphy Anderson. Anderson did a stint on Buck Rogers' Dailies in 1947-48, when he was still a youngster drawing Star Pirate in Planet Comics. By 1958 he was a premiere DC sci-fi artist, knocking out gorgeous covers and important stories, such as Captain Comet, for DC titles like Mystery in Space and Strange Adventures. This is a rare, rare treat...his complete run of Sunday Pages in an extra-large hardcover. This was a strip he was perfect for and clearly enjoyed drawing. Plus a major 20-page intro, Murphy and Buck by R.C. Harvey, beautifully illustrated from original art. Hermes, 2014. Out of Print....More.

JOHN CULLEN MURPHY'S BIG BEN BOLT Dailies Volume 1
Feb 1950-May 52. Recommended. Introduction by Cullen Murphy. The first two years of a fine strip about a boxer and his adventures in and out of the ring. Murphy was hand-picked by Hal Foster to take over Prince Valiant and has often been dismissed by Valiant fans, including myself, for his work on Val. But this, more than 15 years earlier, shows an illustrator working in the same fine-line photo-realistic style of Alex Raymond and John Prentice. I kid you not! This is a very well drawn adventure strip that really reminds me of Rip Kirby! Classic Comics, 2010...More.
