ALEX TOTH BRAVO FOR ADVENTURE Artist's Edition
Highly Recommended. Of every comics story Alex Toth ever drew, the only one that he kept the complete original art to was Bravo for Adventure. This is a virtual "how-to" course in drawing comics. We see how he would draw all the detail in a scene, from thumbnails to pencils to inks--only to black it out in order to focus the reader's eye on what really counted. Also included are variant versions of the Bravo saga, dozens of never-before-seen pencil roughs, preliminary drawings, and story fragments, and twelve pages of Toth's own coloring for an edition that never saw print--until now. IDW, 2016...More.

JAY DISBROW'S MONSTER INVASION
Chilling Archives of Horror Vol 19. Highly Recommended. One of the most bizarre, unique stylists from Pre-Code horror comics is cult-favorite Jay Disbrow. If there's anyone close to this unknown genius, it's Basil Wolverton. Working with friend, editor, and colorist L.B. Cole, Disbrow wrote and drew many fear-inducing tales specializing in terrifying demons, scary apparitions, and a horde of hairy monsters. Showing the influence of EC's Jack Kamen and the pin-up style of Fiction House, Disbrow pushed the envelope with wilder and stranger stories. Includes an interview, photos, and special artwork. VINTAGE ROMANCE COMIC BOOK COVERS Coloring Book
Edited by Yoe Studios. Recommended. By Matt Baker, Bill Ward, Pete Morisi, and the Iger Shop. Color me in love... vintage style! The beautiful, the fascinating, sometimes amusing romance comic book cover art of the '50s and '60s is highlighted in this fun book! Full of Pop Art style kisses, handsome gents, and beautiful misses. Some of the most highly skilled artists of the era drew these romantic and sexy images ready for you to color... or just admire! Matt Baker is the star here, with ten gorgeous covers. The blurbs are as much fun as the artwork, since it's all about titillation and suggestion, but real sex? Never! IDW, 2017...More.

Framing DD for murder, he sets all of New York against the Man Without Fear. The stakes get even higher when Starr Saxon discovers DD's secret identity! DOCTOR STRANGE Volume 3 Blood in the Aether
Collects #11-16, 2015. Highly Recommended. By Jason Aaron. Art by Kevin Nowlan, Leonardo Romero. "Last Days of Magic" aftermath! How did Stephen Strange become the Sorcerer Supreme? And how has he lost it all? "Well-written and wonderfully illustrated." -ComiConverse.com. "Wacky, definitely weird and wildly fun." -AdventuresInPoorTaste.com. I am in agreement with both these reviewers, this is wild, crazy storytelling from content to artwork. This retells his origins, when he was his weakest, and also takes us to present day, with all his foes ganging up on him at once. Is he losing his mind? Marvel, 2017...More.

FICTION HOUSE FROM PULPS TO PANELS
Recommended. By Mitch Maglio. Art by Matt Baker, Lou Fine et al. This looks to be a fascinating volume. I've personally collected Fiction House comics, and also their pulps like Planet Stories, Jungle Stories, and Wings, for decades. They are one of the most interesting comics companies of the Golden Age. Will Eisner and Jerry Iger were instrumental in their beginnings, creating characters and entire titles for them (Jumbo ComicsHawk of the Seas, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle). Planet Comics still is THE sci-fi comic book title of the 1940s. Mature Readers

One very big item this week. Druuna Volume 4 collects the final two novels, first done as graphic albums in 2000 and 2004. The most elegant and the most explicit adult fantasy epic ever, in my mind, by the Italian master of erotic, Serpieri. We currently have five copies of Volume 0, and just received shipments of Volumes 1-3, all of which were out of stock. Unfortunately, all our copies of Volume 3 are being shipped to backorders. Our supplier has been very poor keeping these Italian imports on hand.

News & Notes

101 Great Illustrators from the Golden Age is back in stock, just in case it was out when you tried to order it a few weeks ago. This turns out to be a superlative book, and customers caught on and exhausted my first shipment. It is written by Jeff Menges, the editor at Dover's Calla division.

Jeff is responsible for all the wonderful facsimile editions that Calla is doing, by artists like Rackham, Dulac, Harry Rountree, Kay Nielsen and Charles Robinson. All of them are examined in 101 Illustrators, along with wonderful lesser known folks like Virginia Sterrett, Alice Woodward, Lawson Wood, louis read, Herbert Paus, John R. Neill, Stuart Dugald Walker, and one of my favorites, Hermann Vogel, who inspired themes in Disney's Snow White and Pinocchio! He was the German equivalent of Walt Kelley and Harrison Cady amazing anthropomorthic and storybook fair tale work....but long before both, circa 1880-1910!

He did a wonderful job on 101 Illustrators, including many lesser known illustrators and a look not just at examples of their artwork, but details about their careers. I learned a surprising amount, and this is my area of expertise already. In the Acknowledgements, Jeff kindly thanks both my old partner Jim Vadeboncoeur and myself for our help and inspiration, as he learned about the artists.

This is a perfect companion to Vadeboncoeur's Images Magazine, which concentrates on the art with very little about each artist. And also Illustrated Press's two available volumes of The Golden Age: Masterworks from the Golden Age of Illustration Volumes 2 and 3. These also feature many of the same artists, but no biographical information.

Jim let us have just ten copies of this a few weeks ago, and they sold out almost immediately. However, I just made a last trip to Jim's to pick up ALL the balance of the Images back issues. We found one last box of 25 copies. So, here's one final chance to complete your set if you missed this the first time out. Volumes 2-5 are all in stock at the new sale price of $9.95 each.

Images #1-13: See our website, or the latest catalog on page 30, for all the back issues. #6-13, published at $20 to $30 (for #13) are now $9.95 each. Too late to list in that catalog, Jim gave us a small number of Images #1-5, priced at the original cover price of $20 each. We only have 10-15 copies of each of these left as I write this.

Advance Orders and Back Orders
As I mentioned recently, we would like to confirm that we have each and every record of these items ordered by you. So far we've been pleased that eveyone who's called did have the items in our system. But with our server crash, we did find that a small amount of data was lost. We don't want one of those lost backorders or advance orders to be yours.

So please, if you would, take a few moments and send us an email confirming what you understand you have on order with us. This only applies to items ordered BEFORE DECEMBER 22, and it only applies to items that were out of stock or unpublished at the time of the order.

Thanks again for your patience.

Bookfair Report

I am pleased to say that the recent two big bookfairs we did in California, Pasadena and Oakland, went well for us. That's not always the case, as it was in an underwhelming trip to Denver last spring. But these were good ones, we met many customers and many folks walked away with cool books. Most popular among the new books we took: Goblin Market by Omar Rayyan (we sold out of the copies with the original drawing) and Kinuko Craft's picture book Beauty and the Beast, which was featured on the cover of our Holiday 2016 catalog.

Also popular were back issues of Images Magazine (see above) and Everett Raymond Kinstler: The Artist's Journey Through Popular Culture [EVED. signed/limited to 750, $95, now $30].

Amongst our out-of-print antiquarian books, we were pleased to see sales of the more traditional illustrated books. Arthur Rackham, E.J. Detmold, Willy Pogany, Art Young, Alice in Wonderland items were popular. Anne also sold a lot of her children's picture books, particularly in Oakland at the ABAA show. There was a time when illustrated and children's book dealers were all over the fair, so we once had a lot of competition. But as dealers have aged and retired, or stopped doing book fairs, we find we're one of the few sources for moderately priced books in this area.

Reminder: We will be at the Los Angeles Vintage Paperback Show March 19 at the Glendale Civic Auditorium in Los Angles. Speaking of paperback art, we just found out about two related books from England...one is on British paperback artist Heade, it's a killer book. He's my favorite of all the British pin-up pb artists. And there's also a book on Peter Driben from the same publisher. Watch for listings in a few weeks.

And we'll be at the Sacramento Book Fair, the twice-annual event, on March 25th.
