Kinuko Craft’s Beauty and the Beast-signed, Poe’s The Raven Pop-Up, Gris Grimly’s Brothers Grimm, Jules Verne’s Captain Grant, Machine Man, Dejah of Mars, Frankenstein on sale, More 2017 Calendars

We just returned from San Diego Comic-Con and a partial report is below. More next week, and we’ll also begin listing the many new items we picked up there just as soon as humanly possible. Watch the Just Arrived sections in each category. The Kinuko Y. Craft Beauty and the Beast includes a specially done, full color bookplate she designed exclusively for us, and it’s wonderful. And it’s a children’s book, so it’s just $17.99.

I’ve just begun reading The Children of Captain Grant by Jules Verne, adapted into a 3-book graphic novel (but here all collected in one book). I love the pacing (mellow) and the artwork of this, it’s a good take using much of the original text—but with anthropomorphic animals in the human roles. It’s a blast. The Poe Pop-up is really fun, also.

THE CHILDREN OF CAPTAIN GRANT -- Highly Recommended. Adaptation and art by Alexis Nesme. In this adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel, the entire cast of characters has been transformed into anthropomorphic animals! And the artwork and storytelling and epic quality of these globe-trotting adventures are just brilliant. You HAVE to see this, page after page of artwork that is worthy of a Pixar movie or a Harry Potter film! PRINCE VALIANT Volume 1 -- Sunday Pages, 1937-38. Our Highest Recommendation. By Hal Foster. The giant Sunday funnies pages gave Foster a huge canvas upon which he was able to propel his daring young hero from one crisis to another with barely a panel to catch one's breath. PS Artbooks On Sale

Here I thought we were all caught up last week, but these four new titles rolled in. Also coming is a two-volume slipcased set of The Thing Volumes 1 and 2. See all the sale-priced PS Artbooks on our website. They were among our bestsellers at the San Diego Comic-Con last week. One dealer bought a copy of practically every one we had, nearly fifty titles—and another swapped me rare old Golden Age for a Planet set and several others. Don’t miss out, these are selling quickly and we cannot restock most of the titles once they are gone.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 5 -- Collects #11-15, 1948. Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. Frankenstein in Prize Comics is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Splitting the stories between humor and horror, Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts.....More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 6 -- Collects #16-21, 1948-52. Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. With issue #18, the stories took on a far darker tone and became straight horror, in keeping with the boom in horror comics at this time. Poor Frankenstein was once again the tragic figure, and watch out folks if you mistreated him or what few sympathetic acquaintances he came across. Death and destruction was the payback from our boy, and lots of it. Stories include "World of Monsters," "Satan and the Sailor," "Tomb of the Living Dead," and "Tomb of Death!" ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 7 -- Collects #22-27, 1952-53. Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. While earlier issues were pure humor, with these issues Frankenstein takes a dark, sinister turn into pure horror. Each issue also includes two back-up stories, horror tales typical of the horror comics genre before the code came along. There's work by artists Mort Meskin, Marvin Stein (several), and lots of unknowns. Poor Frankenstein, when he's not killing well-deserving bad guys, he also encounters mummy creatures, a wolfman, is frozen alive, is taken aboard a whaling ship, inadvertently makes friends with a grave-robbing ghoul, and finds an equally horrible mate, who of course he loses to a gun-toting mob.....More.

ROY THOMAS PRESENTS FRANKENSTEIN Volume 8 -- Collects #28-33, 1954. Highly Recommended. Written and drawn by Dick Briefer. While earlier issues were pure humor, here Frankenstein continues, and in fact concludes the complete run. It's now entirely a dark, sinister turn into pure horror. I particularly like these stories, as the mute monster relentlessly deals out harsh, final justice to anyone who wishes him ill. He also became a silent judge-and-jury when he finds others persecuted or wronged, and never hesitates to mete out violent justice! He's the man!....More.

Volume 3 is also available at the sale price, but volume 4 has sold out. We will be restocking it at the original $49.99 price soon. We also still have very limited quantites of the slipcased editions, at $21.95 each, of volumes 5-8. Mature Readers

Just one new adult item this week, and it’s scarcely that. The Vintage Burlesque 2017 Calendar  has just two fully nude pictures, and the balance are all classic tease. But we like it, the costumes are exotic and the girls new to us. Check it out.

Dejah of Mars has several superlative nude paintings for variant covers by Jay Anacleto, but with that the only adult content, I kept it in the regular section. You can see two of these in our scans if you click on it.

News and Notes

San Diego Comic-Con Report
We’re back from the annual sojourn (and epic adventure) which is Comic-Con. It’s recovery day #1 as I write this. Five pallets down, sold lots of things and had a good show, thank you very much. As usual, we brought back nearly more than we took, six pallets—with new books from sketchbooks from Dean Yeagle, Terry Dodson, Aaron Lopresti, Brett Bean, Neal Adams, Simone Bianchi, Joseph Michael Linsner (Dawn) and Arthur Adams. We have two deluxe signed Elfquest publisher exclusives from Flesk Publishing. Also more copies of the limited edition Prince Valiant Pages with the tiniest of flaws, long unavailable.

In about two weeks we will have copies of Carbon 2, and Mark Schultz will be signing a limited number for us.

The Sensuous Frazetta arrived early for the show, thanks to Vanguard including us in his advance delivery. It’s available in softcover, hardcover and deluxe—we put it on the website a while back when still coming. We even have just a few hardcovers signed by Frank’s daughter Holly Frazetta. Also from Vanguard, and also in advance of general distribution, Wally Wood’s Jungle Adventures (also in sc, hc and deluxe)—these last are in before any Diamond accounts will be getting theirs, since the publisher picked up copies at the dock in Long Beach.

We also picked up copies of a fine artbook by Alex Nino, published last year, but each one has a drawing by Alex in it and is signed. And though we could not get regular Bill Sienkiewicz sketchbooks (they are all going to the Lucca show in Italy), we did score ten copies which include a remarque drawing. We’ll try to get regular editions later on. As you may have surmised, it’s sometimes hit or miss on getting all the sketchbooks we would like to offer you. Some artists don’t sell them except at the show, others (sadly) may offer them exclusively through another dealer, and some simply sell them out and that’s it!

We noted there were fewer titles this year—nothing from Chris Sanders, or Alex Ross, for instance. And not nearly so many new titles from new artists—many are now doing lower-cost postcards and prints. The heyday of sketchbooks might just be waning a bit after peaking a year or two ago.

Keep checking the website and we’ll get these new arrivals listed as soon as possible. Our advance orders will use up all we have on the advance copies of The Sensuous Frazetta Deluxe and softcover. But we should have advance copies available of Wally Wood’s Jungle Adventures and the Sensuous Frazetta hardcover, which we did not previously announce. Otherwise it will be two or perhaps three weeks until our main shipment arrives and we can finish filling advance orders and then have copies available for new orders.

Illustration Press (aka Illustration Magazine) just announced a new book on Tom Lovell, limited to just 900 copies. We’ll be handling it as we do all their books.

The highlight for me was Howard Chaykin singing a show tune with my partner Anne...still not sure what brought that on. Bill Stout came by with two new sketchbooks (one is on Bill’s work for Willis O’Brien films like King Kong), author Max Allan Collins (who signed his Mike Hammer Newspaper strip collection), Denis Kitchen came by and we will be handling a self-published bio by him, that expands on the interview in Comics Creator #5. Terry Moore brought us our order of specially signed copies of his new complete Rachel Rising, a massive new book with the complete epic story. We also have Terry’s new sketchbook which will be in shortly. This is already on the website.

We also met up in the booth with EC expert and writer Grant Geissman, Wendy and Richard Pini, Joseph Linsner brought by his new sketchbook, and Daxiong, whose artwork is on the cover of our upcoming catalog (see below), let us have more copies of his art book done several years ago, complete with an original sketch in each one. The author of Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration signed our copies of his book (which is outstanding, by the way).

More news and personal commentary next week. Watch our Facebook page for pictures from the show, including my favorite new comic book acquisitions.

~ Bud
