X-RAY ROBOT Collects #1-4, 2020. My Highest Recommendation. By Michael and Laura Allred. A very, very cool story with superlative art. That's my (Bud's) opinion. And Brian Michael Bendis says "...another Allred home run," which I agree with. Scientists invent a robot and a time/dimensions portal. And not only does it work, but a nihilistic entity from another dimension wants to cause chaos, while a future-version of our robot and scientist, combined, has come back through to help these guys straighten this all out. Three scientists embark on an interdimensional roadtrip through past and future to take down the "Nihilist" and save the universe! Dark Horse, 2021....More. TEDDY By Laurence Luckinbill New from Dead Reckoning. By Laurence Luckinbill. Art by Eryck Tait. Revealing his love of nature, adventure, and justice, Teddy dramatically illustrates the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Dead Reckoning, 2021....More. Interview and brief captions in French only. First published in 2011 in a limited edition, now larger size and with sixteen new pages in full color. Moebius speaks: "Everyone knows by now that Mars is sterile. Yet still we send at great cost robots equipped with small shovels that stubbornly dig remote arid soil in the hope of finding huddled fossils of ancient bacteria. I found it easier and less costly in terms of technology investment to get hold of a blank book and leave the pen running over the paper at random as if in a dream." Both graphic novel with dialogue in French, and wordless story. Moebius Productions, 2019....More. Item Code: LEMAH Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 8x6, 336pg, Partial Color $49.95 |

REED CRANDALL ILLUSTRATOR OF THE COMICS Signed Signed extra-illustrated full color bookplate! Now in softcover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. From the 1940s to the ‘70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the "artist's artist" through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. TwoMorrows, 2021. Due Feb. ...More. Item Code: REEDCRA Soft Cover, 156pg, Full Color $39.95 |
Reed Crandall is one of my very favorite artists, so I was very sad to see the hardcover of this go out of print much too quickly back in 2017. I wanted to share it with everyone possible. But now you have another chance. This time I've added a special bookplate using an original Crandall watercolor that I have owned for 50 years, since I bought it from my much-missed friend Jerry Weist, at 1970s Multi-Con in Oklahoma City. It has never before been published in full color. |

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AUTHORIZED LIBRARY Volume 12 Tarzan and the Lost Empire Featuring Rare Unpublished Archival Materials. Highly Recommended. By Edgar Rice Burroughs. New cover and frontispiece by Joe Jusko. Somewhere in the heart of Africa, a young archaeologist has disappeared in the remote jungle mountains — Erich von Harben, son of an old missionary friend of Tarzan of the Apes. The trail leads to a mysterious valley where Tarzan discovers two surviving outposts of ancient Rome, virtually unchanged by time. And there, Tarzan is thrust into the bloody gladiatorial arena, doomed to face every peril the cruel and corrupt emperor can devise. Written in 1928, this is notable for the introduction of Nkima, who becomes Tarzan's monkey companion, and it reintroduces Muviro, first seen in Tarzan and the Golden Lion, as sub-chief of Tarzan's Waziri warriors. Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc, 2020. Due: Feb....More. Item Code: ERBA12H Hard Cover, 6x9, Text/b&w $29.95 |

Richard Allen Lupoff (February 21, 1935 – October 22, 2020) I just now discovered that Dick Lupoff passed away in October, I am sad to report. I ran into him on rare occasions over the years. Dick and his son were regulars in my Comics & Comix store in Berkeley back in the 1970s and 80s. But he's been a part of my life since my first days of collecting. His Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure, complete with a Frazetta cover and illustrations, was a must-have book for any comics and ERB fan in the mid-1960s. And as editor for Canaveral Press, he was DIRECTLY responsible for getting Frazetta, Reed Crandall, and Roy Krenkel as illustrators of Canaveral's line of original and reprint ERB books…more wonderful material for a young ERB fan in those days. |
Dick was a special guest at a tiny ERB show near here in May of 2019. I got a welcome chance to catch up with him. We also ferried him to dinner and back, as he was pretty infirm even then. He'd lost his wife Pat not long before but was holding up very well, still the eternal fan and so outgoing. I happened to mention my fondness for The Golden Amazon, a series of stories by J. Russell Fern, about a Wonder Woman-like sci fi heroine, in the 1940s pulps. Dick very generously packed up his one hardcover volume, a rare British edition that I'd never seen before, and sent it to me after the show—gratis. I'll always treasure it, especially now. |
This is especially appropriate this week because he died while still writing additional material for the coming new ERB Tarzan volumes, above. See the full description for the 4-volume Tarzan set 9-12, dedicated to him. Here's a small part of his Wikipedia entry: Richard (Dick) Lupoff was an American science fiction and mystery author, who also wrote humor, satire, non-fiction and reviews. In addition to his two dozen novels and more than 40 short stories, he also edited science-fantasy anthologies. He was an expert on the writing of Edgar Rice Burroughs and had an equally strong interest in H. P. Lovecraft. He began his writing career in science fiction fandom in the early 1950s, producing 8 mimeographed copies of his own fanzine, SF52, and later working on others including reviews for Algol and in the early 1960s editing Xero with his wife Pat and Bhob Stewart. Xero's contributors included Dan Adkins, James Blish, Lin Carter, Avram Davidson, L. Sprague de Camp, Roger Ebert (then 19 years of age), Harlan Ellison, Ed Gorman, Eddie Jones, Roy G. Krenkel, Frederik Pohl and Bob Tucker; it received the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine in 1963. In 2004, a hardcover anthology, The Best of Xero, coedited with Pat Lupoff and featuring a nostalgic introduction by Ebert, was published by Tachyon Publications. It was in turn nominated for the Hugo Award. [We handled it at the time]. Lupoff was an editor of Edgar Rice Burroughs for Canaveral Press and in 1965, at the request of the company's owners, wrote a biography of Burroughs, Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure, his first book.
