X-RAY ROBOT
Collects #1-4, 2020. My Highest Recommendation. By Michael and Laura Allred. A very, very cool story with superlative art. That's my (Bud's) opinion. And Brian Michael Bendis says "...another Allred home run," which I agree with. Scientists invent a robot and a time/dimensions portal. And not only does it work, but a nihilistic entity from another dimension wants to cause chaos, while a future-version of our robot and scientist, combined, has come back through to help these guys straighten this all out. Three scientists embark on an interdimensional roadtrip through past and future to take down the "Nihilist" and save the universe! Dark Horse, 2021....More.

TEDDY By Laurence Luckinbill
New from Dead Reckoning. By Laurence Luckinbill. Art by Eryck Tait. Despite rising fear for his youngest son, missing in action in WWI, Theodore Roosevelt takes the stage to speak. It is, he says, "my simple duty." But the speech evolves from politics and the war, into an examination of his life, the choices he's made, and the costs of his "Warrior Philosophy." Revealing his love of nature, adventure, and justice, Teddy dramatically illustrates the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Dead Reckoning, 2021....More.

Next, when Gotham's wealthiest citizens start vanishing — along with some Egyptian artifacts — Batman must trace the crimes (aided or perhaps hindered by Catwoman) and try to unravel who is behind it all, and what their deadly agenda might be. REED CRANDALL ILLUSTRATOR OF THE COMICS Signed
Signed extra-illustrated full color bookplate! Now in softcover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. From the 1940s to the ‘70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the "artist's artist" through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. TwoMorrows, 2021. Due Feb.  ...More.

Item Code: REEDCRA
Soft Cover, 156pg, Full Color
$39.95
Reed Crandall is one of my very favorite artists, so I was very sad to see the hardcover of this go out of print much too quickly back in 2017. I wanted to share it with everyone possible. But now you have another chance. This time I've added a special bookplate using an original Crandall watercolor that I have owned for 50 years, since I bought it from my much-missed friend Jerry Weist, at 1970s Multi-Con in Oklahoma City. It has never before been published in full color.

The trail leads to a mysterious valley where Tarzan discovers two surviving outposts of ancient Rome, virtually unchanged by time. And there, Tarzan is thrust into the bloody gladiatorial arena, doomed to face every peril the cruel and corrupt emperor can devise. Written in 1928, this is notable for the introduction of Nkima, who becomes Tarzan's monkey companion, and it reintroduces Muviro, first seen in Tarzan and the Golden Lion, as sub-chief of Tarzan's Waziri warriors. News & Notes

Richard Allen Lupoff (February 21, 1935 – October 22, 2020)

I just now discovered that Dick Lupoff passed away in October, I am sad to report. I ran into him on rare occasions over the years. Dick and his son were regulars in my Comics & Comix store in Berkeley back in the 1970s and 80s. But he's been a part of my life since my first days of collecting. His Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure, complete with a Frazetta cover and illustrations, was a must-have book for any comics and ERB fan in the mid-1960s. And as editor for Canaveral Press, he was DIRECTLY responsible for getting Frazetta, Reed Crandall, and Roy Krenkel as illustrators of Canaveral's line of original and reprint ERB books…more wonderful material for a young ERB fan in those days.

Dick was a special guest at a tiny ERB show near here in May of 2019. I got a welcome chance to catch up with him. We also ferried him to dinner and back, as he was pretty infirm even then. He'd lost his wife Pat not long before but was holding up very well, still the eternal fan and so outgoing. I happened to mention my fondness for The Golden Amazon, a series of stories by J. Russell Fern, about a Wonder Woman-like sci fi heroine, in the 1940s pulps. Dick very generously packed up his one hardcover volume, a rare British edition that I'd never seen before, and sent it to me after the show—gratis. I'll always treasure it, especially now. This is especially appropriate this week because he died while still writing additional material for the coming new ERB Tarzan volumes, above. See the full description for the 4-volume Tarzan set 9-12, dedicated to him. Here's a small part of his Wikipedia entry:

Richard (Dick) Lupoff was an American science fiction and mystery author, who also wrote humor, satire, non-fiction and reviews. In addition to his two dozen novels and more than 40 short stories, he also edited science-fantasy anthologies. He was an expert on the writing of Edgar Rice Burroughs and had an equally strong interest in H. P. Lovecraft.

He began his writing career in science fiction fandom in the early 1950s, producing 8 mimeographed copies of his own fanzine, SF52, and later working on others including reviews for Algol and in the early 1960s editing Xero with his wife Pat and Bhob Stewart. Xero's contributors included Dan Adkins, James Blish, Lin Carter, Avram Davidson, L. Sprague de Camp, Roger Ebert (then 19 years of age), Harlan Ellison, Ed Gorman, Eddie Jones, Roy G. Krenkel, Frederik Pohl and Bob Tucker; it received the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine in 1963. In 2004, a hardcover anthology, The Best of Xero, coedited with Pat Lupoff and featuring a nostalgic introduction by Ebert, was published by Tachyon Publications. It was in turn nominated for the Hugo Award. [We handled it at the time].

Lupoff was an editor of Edgar Rice Burroughs for Canaveral Press and in 1965, at the request of the company's owners, wrote a biography of Burroughs, Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure, his first book.

THE ART OF SAUL TEPPER
Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. Saul Tepper (1899-1987) was a life member of the Society of Illustrators and was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1980. His work is most closely compared to that of Dean Cornwell, and he worked for all the same popular, nationally selling magazines as Cornwell. He eventually did an almost equal proportion of fiction and advertising assignments, for both magazines and for many national accounts, such as Mobil Oil, Texaco, Packard, General Motors and Coca-Cola. This is the first-ever collection of his work. Tepper began his career working with Albert Dorne, studied under Harvey Dunn and, like Dunn, went on to teach after a long and successful career. Illustrated Press, 2020. ...More.

A COCKEYED MENAGERIE The Drawings of T.S. Sullivant
Highly Recommended. Welcome to the cockeyed menagerie of Thomas Starling Sullivant. From the 1880s to the Roaring Twenties, Sullivant conjured up a whimsical world in pen and ink “ riotous gag cartoons featuring anthropomorphic animals of all stripes; perennial American "types" like hobos, hayseeds, and urban hucksters; and familiar characters from ancient myths and Biblical tales. Imbued with infectious joy, his drawings have inspired generations of artists (such as Walt Kelly!) and countless Disney films. The most comprehensive collection ever published of Sullivant's delightfully off-kilter creations. Fantagraphics, 2020.  ...More.

Graphic Novels

THE GRANDE ODALISQUE
Highly Recommended. In this graphic novel, two beautiful young women are willing to risk everything as they try to beat the system. Carole is an all-star gymnast; Alex is simply gutsy to no end. These two art thieves bring in a third girl, Sam, a daring motorcyclist and boxer, for their biggest caper yet. But the heist — to steal the Ingres painting, The Grande Odalisque, from the Louvre in Paris — is going to be their biggest challenge. They also bring in Clarence, a young man with a price on his head by a Mexican drug cartel and, more importantly, an arms dealer. Ruppert and Mulot, two of the most innovative comic creators in the world, team up with multiple Angouleme prize winner Bastien Vives to bring you this impossibly funny, violent, and sexy action-packed thriller. Minor nudity. Fanagraphics, 2021....More.

PULP
Our Highest Recommendation. By Ed Brubaker. Art by Sean Phillips and Jacob Phillips. An original graphic novel from the bestselling creators”“it may look like a western, but the story begins in New York City in 1939! Max Winters, an aging pulp writer, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at five cents a word”“tales of a Wild West outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun (secretly based on his own outlaw youth in the real west). But now Max is having his own issues, has been tracked down by a retired Pinkerton detective, and might be able to make one last big score. Image Comics, 2021....More.

Item Code: PULPGN

First published in hardcover but now out of print. As I write this, we have two copies left. One of my very favorite Graphic Novels for all of last year.

FIREFLY New Sheriff in the 'Verse Volume 2
Collects Firefly: #16-20, 2020. By Greg Pak. Art by Lalit Kumar Sharma. Sheriff Mal Reynolds vs Serenity?! When the notorious outlaw Mal Reynolds agreed to wear a sheriff's badge, he figured he could change a thing or two about how "justice" is dispensed in the 'Verse. And maybe he did. But his former crew members on Serenity are about to find out if the badge has changed him — when he finally throws them in jail! With the whole 'Verse turned upside down, a new outlaw appears on the scene, calling himself the Bandit King, and he's bound and determined to take Mal's old position as the most incorrigibly independent law-bender around. Has Mal finally met his match? They say you can't trick a trickster, but in this brand new 'Verse, Mal may be in for the surprise of his life. New York Times best-selling writer Greg Pak (Darth Vader) and rising star artist Lalit Kumar Sharma (Daredevil) present the next exciting chapter continuing Joss Whedon's acclaimed series. A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER and Other Stories
Highly Recommended. This volume collects all of George Evans' horror stories for EC. It features "Blind Alleys," one of the most chilling and famous EC stories (adapted for the 1972 movie Tales From the Crypt). A man who abused residents of a home for the blind winds up in an impossibly narrow corridor lined with razor blades as a ravenous dog closes in—and the lights go out! "In Gorilla My Dreams," an innocent man's brain is transplanted into a gorilla ... who is then blamed for the death of his former self and hunted down. "A Slight Case of Murder," finds four pretty young women gruesomely murdered inside locked rooms with no way for the killer to get in or out. Fantagraphics, 2021....More.

FLEETWAY PICTURE LIBRARY CLASSICS Pirate Tales
Highly Recommended. Four long, complete stories published in Thriller Picture Library between 1954 and 1956—not unlike Classics Illustrated but I'd say, superior to most!! These feature the exhilarating piratical art of Philip Mendoza, Reg Bunn, Robert Forrest and John Millar Watt. These stories would not be out of place alongside Reed Crandall's in EC's Piracy. They are THAT good, while being longer and more developed, with lots of text, plot twists, historical characters and mystery. The Rogue's Moon by Robert W. Chambers splendidly captures the brutality and mendaciousness of cut-throat pirates, but with a wonderful, daring girl—in disguise—as our protagonist. Captain Kidd of the Spanish Main has the feel of good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure, so prevalent in the movies of the 1950s. In The Sea Hawk by Raphael Sabatini, the world of the Barbary pirates comes to fierce, vigorous life with atmospheric and authentically-realized drawings. Finally, Fortunes of Captain Blood offers more in the tradition of Sabatini's Sea Hawk. Book Palace, 2020....More.

FLEETWAY PICTURE LIBRARY CLASSICS Westerns
Art by Ruggero Giovannini. Four complete 64-page stories featuring the atmospheric Western art of Ruggero Giovannini, first published in Thriller Picture Library from 1957-60. Today, Giovannini is mainly remembered in England for the many western, adventure and historical comic strips he drew in a realistic style, packed with plenty of action on each page. His style, inspired by Milton Caniff and Will "Red Barry" Gould, has a way of telling a story which is fast-paced, occasionally using heavy shadows, and accompanied with his quickly rendered, yet effective, inking. From terrifying time travel to usurping "The Crown of Tasbah," the Blot will stop at nothing to turn the world upside down! FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OF BRITISH ART
Tate Britain is the home of British art from 1500 to the present day. This guide to the collection provides an essential introduction to the extraordinary development of British art over the centuries: from van Dyke, Hogarth and Reynolds, to Sargent, Burne-Jones and Waterhouse, to the modernists Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and Francis Bacon. About half the book covers our area of interest, paintings up to 1900 or so; the latter half features abstract, cubist and modern art, which I admit I personally have little feel for. So take that as you will! Tate, 2020....More.

THE ART OF RICHARD EURICH
By Andrew Lambirth. This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the entire career of British artist Richard Eurich (1903-1992). Eurich was a draughtsman, landscape painter, teacher, war artist, autobiographer, marine painter extraordinaire, portrait painter, figure painter, satirist, genre painter, visual poet of the beach, and occasional sculptor. And on occasion he'd paint "the mysterious and unseen." He settled on the coast of England and marine paintings became a specialty. During World War II he was a war artist. CHARLES BARGUE AND JEAN-LEON GEROME DRAWING COURSE
Recommended. By Gerald Ackerman and Graydon Parrish. A complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. Two hundred masterful lithographs of subjects for copying by drawing students before they attempt drawing from life or nature. Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue. Jean-Leon Gérôme, besides being one of the finest artists of his day, also established his own school in Paris in the 1800s, which became a mecca for aspiring artists from the U.S. and around the world. A second category is HURT BOOKS, which we've collected in CLOSEOUTS. Hover over that on the home page, and then click IMPERFECT EDITIONS to view all discounted, slightly bumped or dented copies. You can sort both of these (and any other category in the menu bar), using the filter box, by POPULARITY, PRICE and LATEST, which sorts these by the most recent item's publication date.

Al Parker: Illustrator, Innovator

Auad Publishing has let us know he's nearly out of copies of this. We'll have these for a while, but at less than half price they've been selling briskly [ALPAH. $44.95, $17.50]. The price will be going up after the latest catalog is finished. See more on-sale Auad Publishing books on Frank Brangywn and Henry Patrick Raleigh, and regular-priced and out of print collections on Bernet, Bernet's Clara, Robert Fawcett, Alex Toth and Alex Niño (signed).

Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire

We FINALLY got a restock on these and filled a LOT of backorders we'd built up. We currently have just 8 in stock and it's out of print. I hope it is reprinted but no word on that. Volume 2 has been announced, watch for it soon. [RIS01. $24.99].

Flesk Publishing News

Carbon 4 and Xenozoic by Schultz and the new Al Williamson books: They are done printing and should ship from Hong Kong this week…That gets the books to us in March. “Everything is moving so much slower right now”. John has offered to drive the three books up here, so we'll be the first to have copies (he lives just 4 hours from here, and likes the drive to the mountains!) We have just one shot at the publisher exclusives, so depending on their popularity, we may not have these available for long. I advise you to reserve your copy now, if you have not already.

Carbon 4 softcover [MSC04. $24.95]
Publisher Exclusive Hardcover, signed [MSC04HS. $39.95]

Xenozoic (new cover) softcover [XENO. $29.95]
