Illustrated with more than 400 examples of the best pulp covers and graphics. Plus two special chapters: David Saunders on artists Norman Saunders and Walter Baumhofer, and Ed Hulse looks at H.P. THE BLACK BAT #9
The Voice of Doom and The Black Bat's Invisible Enemy. Recommended. By Norman A. Daniels. Art by Virgil E. Pyle. First, the Masked Avenger of Crime rips aside the veil of secrecy that shrouds a mob leader’s murderous activities in “The Black Bat’s Invisible Enemy.”  Then, the Black Bat pursues “The Voice of Doom," a human scourge who attacks the underworld and upperworld alike! Golden Age of Comics: The Mask returns in another illustrated adventure from Nedor's Golden Age comics! Original cover paintings by Rudolph Belarski and interior illustrations by V. E. Pyles, with historical commentary by Will Murray and Anthony Tollin. Sanctum, 2017...More.

THE SHADOW #122
The Four Signets and The Five Keys to Crime. Recommended. By Walter B. Gibson. Art by Tom Lovell, Paul Orban, and Earl Mayan. Two thrilling pulp novels from 1935 and 1945. First, The Shadow knows that “The Four Signets” hold a secret message that spreads crime and murder in their deadly wake! Then, the bequest of a rosewood music box leads to “Five Keys of Crime” that can provide its young heir with a fabulous inheritance—if he lives long enough to collect it! Bonus: A Hollywood star steals the picture--in Brooklyn. Female sleuth Carrie Cashin investigates the mystery of “The Three X's” in a 1939 tale by Theodore Tinsley from Crime Busters. Art Books

ABOVE THE TIMBERLINE Signed
Signed illustrated bookplate! Highly Recommended. By Gregory Manchess. Fully illustrated with 123 oil paintings! A stunning and cinematic combination of art and novel, wih full color work on every page, not unlike the format of Gurney's Dinotopia. From renowned artist Gregory Manchess comes a lavishly painted novel about the son of a famed polar explorer searching for his stranded father, and a lost city buried under snow in an alternate future. When it started to snow, it didn't stop for 1,500 years. The Pole Shift that ancient climatologists talked about finally came, the topography was ripped apart and the weather of the world was changed—forever. Saga Press, 2017...More.

Item Code: ABOTH

We just acquired one copy of the Manchess Wandering Star Conan I mention in the full description above. Watch for it or call for more information. His work also appears in Conan The Phenomenon [CTP $19.99, your price $17.99], and in Spectrum 3, 7 and 19 (among many others but we can't index every artist). In stock now.

FATHOMS The Art of Michael Manomivibul Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. A fine art book funded by a highly successful Kickstarter program, Michael's first collection showcases six years of art. He has appeared in Spectrum six times, including the new Volume 24 which has two pieces, one of which (the wonderful leopard painting) is featured here in describing how he moves from idea and prelim to final painting. 80 pages of art with notes in a high quality softcover. We love the cover. Sections include Beasts Real and Imagined, Lovecraft-inspired horror, The Final Frontier (including two Star Trek pieces), even some heroic fantasy in Love, Honor and Sacrifice. 2016...More.

Six New Classics Illustrated!

CLASSIC COMICS #29 The Prince and the Pauper
Originally printed 1946. By Samuel L. Clemens. Art by Arnold L. Hicks. While the interior artwork is the classic 1946 story, this boasts the more modern George Wilson painted cover--and each one of his is outstanding--from 1955. This is the famous story of a street urchin and a prince who exchange roles, leading the former into court intrigue and a threat to his life, while the latter gets among the people and finds out how they are being abused by the powers governing in his stead, since he is underage. Plus a biography of author Mark Twain, aka Samuel Clemens. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC29
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

CLASSIC COMICS #30 The Moonstone
Original Publication 1946. By Wilkie Collins. Art by Don Rico. The noted L.B. Cole provides the cover for this, created for the 3rd printing in 1960. Inside we have  the original classic from 1946 drawn by Don Rico, whose work on the Golden Age Daredevil and countless other comics is evidence of his skill as artist. The Moonstone is an offbeat tale, centered around a fabulous jewel and the curse that accompanies it, dooming each successive owner (or jewel-thief) to a violent death and about the mysterious eastern sect that wants to return it to its home. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC30
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

CLASSIC COMICS #80 White Fang
First published 1951. Recommended. By Jack London. Art by Alex A. Blum. This famous story went through eleven printings, and it sports one of the most dynamic covers from the modern repainted covers. But there is no artist to which it is attributed. Inside, we have the famous adventure of an Alaskan huskie, befriended by Indians and an Englishman, and abused by a sadistic trapper. It's the Call of the Wild for a brave dog and his incredible adventures in the Yukon gold fields of the late 1800s, a classic by all-time great Jack London. Bio and three pages of special features. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC80
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

CLASSIC COMICS #127 The King of the Mountains
First Published 1955. By Edmond About. Art by Norman Nodel. A scarce title that went into just three printings, first done in 1955. It is 1856, and Herman Schultz has won a prize allowing him to study botany in Greece. But at one point he and his female companions go a little too far into the interior, and are captured by bandits. And there lies the story, as Schultz meets The King of the Mountains and stumbles and also bluffs his way into staying alive in a dangerous country, while learning about the unique tribes of mountainous Greece. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC127
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

CLASSIC COMICS #169 Negro Americans The Early Years
First Published 1969. By Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, Prince Hall et al. Art by Norman Nodel. This was virtually the last of the regular series Classics, with more very competent work by artist Norman Nodel. This comprises biographical profiles and sketches of 27 black personalities. These include Booker Washington, Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, Oliver Cromwell (a Revolutionary War patriot) , Spy James, Benjamin Banneker, James Beckwourth, Robert Smalls and many others. This only went into two printings. Nodel also provided the painted cover, one of his best. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC169
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

CLASSIC COMICS #175 Beau Geste
First Published 1950. Recommended. By P.C.Wren. Art by Henry C. Kiefer. Technically speaking, this is not a Classics Illustrated even though it's now under the CI banner. This was first published as part of a brief series imitating Classics, called Fast Fiction. It was then retitled Stories by Famous Authors and the series ended after 13 releases. But it's every bit as good as any CI, and is even drawn by one of the CI regulars. Three Englishman attempt to escape the past by enlisting in the French Foreign Legion, and there begins one heroic adventure after another. Jack Lake, 2017...More.

Item Code: CLC175
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color

HARLEQUIN VALENTINE (Second Edition)
Highly Recommended. By Neil Gaiman. Art by John Bolton. A bargain-priced hardcover presents the story of the legendary commedia dell'arte, beautifully redesigned. And Neil Gaiman performs his usual magic, enchanced by the fine photo-realistic and yet fantasy art of the great John Bolton. When a buffoonish Harlequin offers his heart to the beautiful, oblivious Columbine, neither of them is prepared for the charming surprise that awaits them both! Set in the present day, it's a surreal little tale of of beauty and, well, the very strange character of Harlequin. Dark Horse, 2017...More.

THE HARVEY COMICS COMPANION
Recommended. By Mark Arnold. Harvey Comics -- the name conjures up images of characters such as Casper, the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich, the Poor Little Rich Boy adorning small TV sets alongside the spines of their comic books. But the Harvey story was much, much more. A company started by Alfred Harvey in 1941, he soon brought in his brothers Leon and Robert to establish a comic book company that got its start in the Golden Age with a number of superhero titles including their first star, The Black Cat. 707 pages! It's Harvey comics from A to Z. BearManor Media, 2017...More.

Comic Strip Collections

THE CISCO KID Volume 3
Dailies, 1955-57. Highly Recommended. By Rod Reed. Art by José Luis Salinas. The third volume of the complete reprinting of The Cisco Kid, arguably the best drawn western strip ever done. The fine line work by Salinas is just amazing, challenging the quality of work by James Montgomery Flagg, Everett Raymond Kinstler, and Mac Raboy. Plus a fun and often exciting storyline of adventure in the old West, with bandits, villains, stagecoach crashes, hangings, beautiful women...it's all here. The reproduction suffers a bit as it's done from the printed strips, but that's my sole criticism. Dailies from March 21, 1955 to June 1, 1957. Classic Comics, 2017...More.

Item Code: CIS03
Soft Cover, 8x11, 240pg, b&w

PEANUTS EVERY SUNDAY Volume 5
Color Sunday Pages, 1971-75. Recommended. By Charles M. Schulz. An amazing four years of classic pages. Since their original publication, Peanuts Sundays have almost always been collected and reprinted in black and white. But not here, here you see them once again in glorious color, from prime years of the strip. Scrupulously re-colored to match the original syndicate coloring, these early 1970s strips showcase Schulz at his philosophical and illustrative peak. Classic Snoopy and Charlie Brown, Lucy and Linus and the crew in the best format ever to enjoy them. Fantagraphics, 2017...More.

News and Notes

Comic Shop
In conjunction with the release of the book Comic Shop by Dan Gearino, I will be appearing along with other retailers and publishers and artists at a special book night on November 4th. That is at Flying Colors Comics,
2980 Treat Blvd, Concord, CA 94518 Phone: (925) 825-5410.

The event will begin at 5pm on that Saturday and I imagine it will run later on into the evening. Mike Friedrich (Star Reach), Dick Swan (Big Guy’s Comics), Joe Ferrara (Atlantis Fantasyworld), and others will be there, along with the author. More information is on their website: http://www.flyingcolorscomics.com/

We will be handling the book and I will be signing all copies, but since it’s just $26.95, we have not announced it yet since we prefer not to take backorders for items in this price range. The publisher’s rep lost our initial order, so we’re awaiting our now-late shipment. I’d be happy to inscribe copies if you would like me to, just let us know when you order. It’ll be announced shortly.

OAF-Con 2017 Report
I’ve posted two reports and two sets of pictures from the show on Facebook, so I refer you to these for October 25. I will do another post or two as soon as I can. It’s fun to share the very eclectic stuff I found there, easier than recording the conversations, of which there were many, as the folks there are all great people. And we only had one tornado warning to deal with, that was exciting. We don’t get these in California, it sounded like those sirens in The Time Machine film, and caught us walking from a restaurant in a nearby mall back to the hotel. But we didn’t blow away.

Roget Hill told me the next EC Fan-Addict will be ready around January. He’s working on two more books or projects on artists in the meantime, which of course I’ve forgotten who he’s writing about now. His Reed Crandall book is no longer available (I have four copies left as I write this, with no date announced yet for the softcover). I sold out all that I had at OAF-Con.

Jim Gerlach, publisher of the recent ERB Bibliography and Back to the Stone Age, announced his next book will be The Land That Time Forgot. It will also boast one edition with the original cover, the other with a handsome (I saw it) wrap-around Bob Eggleton cover. We’ll be handling it, and it will be only $100 a copy.

Prince Valiant Studio Edition
This is now officially out of print. Our second reorder was not filled. We have exactly 27 copies left as I write this, and it will be featured in our upcoming December catalog. THEY DREW AS THEY PLEASED The Hidden Art of Disney's Late Golden Age Volume 3
Highly Recommended. By Didier Ghez. Foreword by Andreas Deja. Walt Disney always envisioned that the studios bearing his name would remain relevant by consistently taking creative risks and doing the unexpected. Heading into the 1940s, he crafted an entirely new division of the studio called the Character Model Department, which focused solely on the details of character development. This showcases four (or six, we're unsure yet) of these early pioneers and features artwork developed by them for the Disney shorts from the 1930s, including many unproduced projects, as well as for Snow White and the Seven DwarfsPinocchio, and some early work for later features such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. By Lee Falk. Art by Fred Fredericks. Join Mandrake as he battles slavers, explores the Lost World, unlocks the mystery of a haunted house, travels to Hollywood, rescues Sonny the child movie star and meets Blozz the mysterious. In June 1965, artist Fredericks took over Mandrake from the late Phil Davis. MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN SUNDAYS Volume 1 1935 -1937
The Hidden Kingdom of Murderers. Highly Recommended. By Lee Falk and Phil Davis. This unusual strip was the first to feature a magician. Artist Phil Davis's work is as good as Alex Raymond's from the same period, exhibiting a fine-line brush and beautiful girls as good as the master. I'm very excited to finally have this long-overdue collection of a superior, oft-neglected classic. Titan, 2016...More.

A superlative collection of Mucha's works, behind highly ornate, silver-embossed covers, spanning his entire career from his beginnings in Paris to his final days in what was then known as Czechoslovakia after four years in the United States. His most representative works are featured, not only in the field of fine art but also in editorial design and graphic design. But to this day, very little has been written about him. This fine new book is based on an exhibit that originated in Japan, collecting a once-in-a-lifetime abundance of his original artwork. PRE-CODE CLASSICS THE UNSEEN Volume 1
Collects #5-10, 1952-53. By John Celardo et al. It was the 1950's - the Atomic Age, the Cold War, and just before the Space Race. Comics books were the education, the entertainment, and, according to some, the downfall of America. What a great time! We loved to be scared - still do, it seems - from the comfort of our own home, secure in the knowledge that there's no real danger (or so we think). Nothing could match the imagination, the surprise, and the chilling-of-your-spine like the great horror comics of yesteryear. PS Artbooks, 2017. Due Dec. ...More.

AL CAPP LI'L ABNER Volume 9
Moonbeam McSwine, Li'l Abner, Fearless Fosdick, 1951-52. By Al Capp. To millions of daily readers spanning five decades, Al Capp was the man whose biting satire made them laugh as he injected “Lower Slobbovia,” “the double whammy,” and “Sadie Hawkins Day” into our popular lexicon. To Nobel-laureate John Steinbeck, he was “very possibly the best writer in the world today.” This series is the first-ever comprehensive reprinting of the comic strip—including both dailies and meticulously-restored full-color Sundays.
