| I remember seeing Nexus at my local comic shop back in the eighties. I wasn't thrilled with the magazine format (or the lack of color), but the story and art were top-notch nonetheless. This Kirbyesque space opera had it all: action, intrigue, humor, and heart. Somewhere between Adam Strange and Space Ghost, Baron and Rude's Nexus found a place in my psyche where it's resided all these years since. I think I'm due to revisit this excellent series once again... aren't we all? ~Marty |
Tarzan |
|
Tarzan was always a part of my formative fanboy years. First, there was the NBC Saturday morning live-action TV series starring Ron Ely. Then I saw Mike Henry in Tarzan and the Valley of Gold at a Saturday matinee at the Tower Theater in Roseville California. And, of course, there was the Filmation animated series on CBS, which heavily leaned into Tarzan lore by using the Mangani language throughout its run. And even today, over a hundred years after the earliest cinematic incarnation of the Jungle Lord (looking at you, Elmo Lincoln!), we still study the character, reminisce about, and further his fictional exploits. Tarzan truly could be the most popular and recognizable literary and pop culture character of all time. And here's four more arguments in favor of that claim! ~Marty |

BATMAN IN THE SEVENTIES Recommended. By Dennis O'Neil, Bernie Wrightson, Alex Toth, et al. In the '70s, Batman began his transformation from the campy Caped Crusader of the '60s TV series into the grim Dark Knight that would emerge in the '90s motion pictures. This action-packed collection includes the greatest adventures of that era; classic stories which helped to reshape this legendary icon. Featuring appearances by Batgirl, Robin, the Joker, Man-Bat, the Huntress, and Ra's al Ghul, Batman in the Seventies is an outstanding opportunity to look back and enjoy the tales of the past that are now the foundation for the future. DC Comics, 2026. ...More. Item Code: BATSEV Soft Cover, 7x10, 192pg, Full Color $19.99 |
Following the end of "Batmania" in the late '60s, Batman and the Batman Family of characters were kind of lost and aimless. The carefree, kooky days of the campy-yet-straight-faced ABC TV series (which was so popular, it aired twice a week during its heyday) were over. It was time to get serious. And so they did. Batman wiped that grin off his face and returned to crimefighting as the world's greatest detective. A man with a mission; a Knight. A Dark Knight. And it's these stories, written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, Joe Staton and others, that made way for the grim and deadly-serious storytelling we know today. These legendary stories launched Batman into his ultimate role. These are essential stories for any Batman fan. ~Marty |

FILM NOIR 100 All-Time Favorites Introduction by screenwrtiter/director Paul Schrader. Recommended. Edited by Jürgen Müller. Enter a world populated by private eyes, gangsters, psychopaths, and femmes fatales, where deception, lust, and betrayal run rampant. This film-by-film photography book on film noir and neo-noir begins with the early genre influencers of German and French silent film, journeys through such seminal works such as Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Vertigo, and arrives at the present day via Chinatown, Pulp Fiction, Heat, and the recent cult favorite Drive. Taschen, 2026....More. Item Code: FILMNH Hard Cover, 7x10, 896pg, Full Color $40.00 |
When filmmakers were plying their craft, making crime films and mysteries in the B&W past, they didn't know that they were creating a film genre, they were just trying to make the best pictures possible—the kind that get people into movie houses and later discussing them around the water cooler at work. The best movies of the "Film Noir" genre are presented in this new hardcover movie book, from the editor of Taschen's 100 Movies of the (fill in the decade) series. Each film is examined in detail, with plenty of screenshots and lots of information on the production and each film's impact and legacy. If you're into film, this one is essential reading! ~Marty |

ROY THOMAS A Life in Four Colors 1940-1966 Recommended. Cover by Jerry Ordway! By Roy Thomas. The man Stan Lee dubbed “Rascally Roy” and “Roy the Boy” tells the full, uncensored story of his emergence as one of the brightest stars in the Marvel Comics firmament! It's all here, starting with his Midwestern beginnings devouring the late, great Golden Age of Comics, to the glorious flowering of comics fandom during the first half of the 1960s (including the 1961 founding of Alter Ego and all that that first super-hero fanzine spawned). TwoMorrows Publishing, 2026. ...More. Item Code: ROYLH Hard Cover, 9x11, 256pg, Text/Partial Color |
| Roy Thomas is one of those longtime creators whose name is synonymous with Marvel Comics, the place where he did so much of his work. Roy released the first volume of his autobiographical account of his years at Marvel, focusing this volume on his start and early career. A second volume, coming next year I believe, will bring his career there (and elsewhere), up to date to the present. There are so few of the young pioneers still around from the Silver Age, the period of comics where everything changed (for the better, I think), and to get the stories of those early years, where so many of our favorite characters were reimagined or created outright, is a rare opportunity to know the past so we can better understand our hobby's present. And to hear some juicy tales about what went on behind the scenes. I'm looking forward to digging into this one! ~Marty |

COMING IN JULY WILLIAM STOUT'S COMICS AND STORIES Volume 1 Signed |
| I'm looking forward to the arrival of this particular art book. I've been a big fan of Bill Stout's work since the '70s, and it was an extreme honor and a pleasure to work with him on bringing this title to our customers and arranging for the creation of our exclusive bookplate/art print. Bill graciously offered to create an all-new piece of art especially for us, and we're including it, signed by the man himself, with every copy sold. This means that if you order the signed hardcover edition of this fantastic career retrospective (the first of three volumes!), you'll receive TWO signatures by the author! This one is highly recommended by all of us here. ~Marty |

ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY Volume 9 Adventures into Weird Worlds First of three volumes! In the unrestrained days before the Comics Code Authority censored the industry, these stories drawn by the cream of the Atlas crop chilled readers to the bone: Irradiated, post-apocalyptic monsters become "The Walking Death!" A frantic, tiny voice calls out from "The Thing in the Bottle"! Humanity faces intergalactic doomsday "When a World Goes Mad!" A cemetery robber tells how "I Crawl Through Graves"! Satan himself unveils "The Pit of Horror!" This is the first of three volumes re-presenting this classic Atlas horror series in its entirety. Adventures don’t get any Weirder! Fantagraphics, 2026. Due: July....More. Item Code: ATL09H Hard Cover, 9x11, 304pg, Full Color |
Fantagraphics' unparalleled Atlas archival series continues with the next collection, which features tales from the pages of the anthology series, Adventures into Weird Worlds. This particular release almost didn't make it to our shores. The ship carrying this title came under missile attack while navigating the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing conflict with Iran, forcing it to reroute for weeks before landing here. Was it worth the wait? You bet it was. I highly recommend this release and, emphatically, their entire Atlas series. Just great stuff! ~Marty |
