Dan Brereton’s Night Owls, new wartime books from Dead Reckoning, Two-Fisted Tales, Dick Tracy, more new Firefly, Neil Gaiman, Terry Moore and more...

Dan Brereton's new collection, Night Owls, is here, with two editions exclusive from us. I really liked reading Night Witches and Men at Sea, both from Dead Reckoning. Both are really incredible. The last Two-Fisted issues are now available in Archive 4, Walt and Skeezix hits Volume 7, here is a new take on Dick Tracy, more new Firefly, the second Gaiman American Gods graphic novel, Terry Moore's conclusion to the 25th Strangers in Paradise story, Marvel Decades 70s--with monsters and Barks' Uncle Scrooge (and Gyro Gearloose).

Collecting illustrations ranging from spooky to heroic, fetching and occasionally nude, to monstrous, Night Owls, by illustrator and comics-creator Dan Brereton, not only contains new work from the past year, but freshly-completed artwork. Brereton is a painter, and it makes his work dynamic and colorful, setting it apart from much comics work. Here are his popular Nocturnals characters in new pieces, plus assorted cute witches, Batman, Harley Quinn, The Demon, Dracula, Storm, The Spirit, Vampi & Red Sonja, etc. Includes an interview and an original prose piece about the title, by James Moore. A BOUQUET OF A THOUSAND FLOWERS The Art of Senbon Umishima
Recommended. The works of the illustrator, animator and manga artist, Senbon Umishima, including the artist's anime characters, landscapes, and selections from Senbon's own original manga stories. Umishima also worked as animation director for She & Her Cat, the first animated work by the award-winning animator Makoto Shinkai, and contributed to The Heroic Legend of Arslan and other anime series. Umishima's drawings are known for the way they illustrate body movement beautifully, while also expressing a sense of sentiment —a unique style that has inspired the artist's more than a hundred thousand followers on Twitter. Highly Recommended from Dead Reckoning

MEN AT SEA
Our Highest Recommendation. All art by Riff Reb's. Prose by Joseph Conrad, William Hope Hodgson, Poe, Verne, Jack London, et al. Men at Sea is an opus of eight spectacularly drawn dramatic stories, tightly adapted by French illustrator Riff Reb's and often using a great deal of the original (and superbly written) text. Plus there are also eight more double-page drawings, each accompanied by poetic, poignant excerpts from stories, with Riff giving us a key scene. What we get is a rich, poetic, and masterfully crafted work of life and death on the sea--drawn in a style that will remind you of Berni Wrightson--particularly the double-page works. Dead Reckoning, 2019...More.

NIGHT WITCHES
Highly Recommended. By Garth Ennis. Art by Russell Braun. As the German Army smashes deep into Soviet Russia and the defenders of the Motherland retreat in disarray, a new squadron arrives at a Russian forward airbase. They will risk fiery death flying obsolete biplanes as night-bombers against the invader. But these pilots and navigators are women, who must, and do, prove themselves capable even as most lose their lives. In the lethal skies above the Eastern front, they will become a legend known to friend and foe alike as the Night Witches. And one woman will survive, to move up to flying fighters and becoming a hero of Soviet Russia for her determination and skill. Dead Reckoning, 2019...More.

KATUSHA Girl Soldier of the Great Patriotic War
Recommended. By Wayne Vansant. On Sunday, June 22, 1941, the morning after Katusha's graduation, the Germans invade the Soviet Union. As enemy forces occupy Kiev, Ukraine, Katusha and her family learn the Nazis are not there to liberate them from communist rule, but to conquer. During the next four years, Katusha experiences the war on the Eastern Front with all its ferocity and hardship: first as a partisan, then as a Red Army tank driver and commander. From Barbarossa to Stalingrad, Dnipro to Berlin, follow Katusha's amazing adventures in the Russian army, through death, hopelessness, victory, glory, and even love. Dead Reckoning, 2019...More.

Item Code: KATUG
Soft Cover, 7x10, 584pg, Full Color
$36.00

It's interesting that two of these three new books deal with World War II but from an entirely different viewpoint, of the Soviet Army battling the invading Nazi army. Publisher Dead Reckoning is a non-profit publishing arm of the Naval Institute Press. The first book of theirs that we handled was also very well done:

WALT AND SKEEZIX Volume 7 1933-1934
Highly Recommended. By Frank King. This new volume opens amid tough times, as the Depression grinds into its fourth year. Against this setting, a con artist sets up a storefront in town and ropes Walt and the Gasoline Alley gang into the scheme. Young Skeezix and his friends try to find inventive ways to earn money, although not always with the intended results--including fixes to a smashed-up car long before they can drive it...or afford gas. Funny, poignant and endearing stories, some of the finest of the times. Drawn & Quarterly, 2019...More.

EC ARCHIVES Two-Fisted Tales Volume 4
Collects #36-41, the final issues, 1954-55. Our Highest Recommendation. By Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, et al. Art by Jack Davis, John Severin, Evans, Wood, Krigstein and Crandall. As these final issues were produced, editor Harvey Kurtzman turned over the editorial reins to artist John Severin. Stories moved away from WWII and the Korean war and turned to adventure, including western frontier tales starring Indians and gunslingers. Severin took over doing cover art and drew many of the stories, frequently along with superb work by Jack Davis. But also here is a wonderful biography of big game hunter Carl Akeley by Wally Wood. Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess

We promoted this a few weeks ago, as the new edition of the graphic novel came in. But we'd forgotten we'd done a really outstanding full color bookplate, drawn by Charles Vess, for the original edition. And still had copies signed by Charles. So this is now included with any copies. If you got one before we added it, let us know next time you order. Here's a picture of the plate.

Gallery Ready

A local publisher who used to operate an art gallery here in Grass Valley wrote a very specialized book: Gallery Ready: A Creative Blueprint for Visual Artists, by Franceska Alexander. It's a small 5x8 book with 100 pages, about organizing your work, finding your market, getting your work into a gallery, pursuing your audience. This is so specialized I'm not adding it to our inventory, but if you want a copy, it's $15. Call or email us.
