Prince Valiant, Red Barry, Disney Treasury of Classic Tales, Arthur Conan Doyle, Lost World, Harry Rountree, Cerebus, Miyazaki, Brom

A new Prince Valiant is always a special event--getting near the end of Foster’s run. Red Barry is a fun collection, reminds me of early Eisner. Disney Treasury of Classic Tales collects rare Sunday page stories by the studio. Arthur Conan Doyle’s Lost World, drawn by Harry Rountree, is way cool. The Cerebus Covers is a surprise treat, nicely done with Sim’s commentary. Plus Miyazaki, a new Brom novel, graphic novels and more.

In the first story, King Arthur sends Val to North Wales to thwart an attack by King Cidwick, while back in Camelot, Mordred plans a scandal that will break the Fellowship of the Round Table. Fortunately, a battle-weary Val finds some minor respite in the melee known as the Spring tournament, but the festivities are interrupted as an invading army of savage Saxons attack in the Battle of Baddon Hill. The only one who can save King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot is Val’s son, Prince Arn. Fantagraphics, 2016. ...More.

RED BARRY UNDERCOVER MAN Volume 1
Highly Recommended. By Will Gould. Red Barry was one of the most visually innovative adventure strips of the mid-1930s, combining fluid brushwork and noir shadows (in bold blues and purples) with figures that were constantly in motion, plus a level of violence that brought cries of protest from its syndicate. Red Barry and Secret Agent X-9 were King Features' answers to the Tribune's Dick Tracy.  While X-9 continued for decades under hands of various quality, Red Barry by Will Gould (no relation to Chester) was an auteur's vision that lasted less than four years. MALY SIRI'S PIN-UP ART Good Girls and Bad Girls From the 30's to the 50's
Highly Recommended. This is a facinating collection of short tales, spoof vintage ads, homages to girls from Bettie Page to Rita Hayworth. Wonderful work in the same fun style as the wildly popular DC Bombshells, with sections by decade from the 1930s (Film Fun covers, for instance), to the 1940s wartime pin-ups, to the kinky bondage of the 1950s, repeated in this flip book with good girls behind one cover, bad girls behind the other. Order early for Christmas and avoid those last minute extra shipping costs.

I’m back from the shows in Oklahoma, Houston and Boston. Some of my adventures have been posted to Facebook and I’ll get more photos up as soon as I catch my breath. I found some wonderful items and as they arrive here, I’ll get some scans made and post them to Facebook.

My big find was some incredible early Gustave Dore books, original French editions circa 1864-1873. Anne and I are very happy to be home until February now, with the fall show season at an end.

OAF in Oklahoma City was a blast as usual. Check out the Wally Wood diorama I wrote about here and on Facebook.
