Artists & Illustration

This is always an exciting category for us, and many of our own catalog covers feature art from the fine books in this category. The Illustrated Press (Dan Zimmer/Illustration magazine) has been doing a phenomenal job with new books and an occasional new printing (Reynold Brown, below, and Dean Cornwell). Vanguard's Sensuous Frazetta came out in 2016 but still is hot, and Spurlock has said a second collection will be done.

1. ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY SPECIAL #1 Spanish Artists
Almost Gone! Highly Recommended. By Diego Cordoba. With Jordi Bernet, Enric, Luis Garcia, Pepe Gonzales, Esteban Maroto, Sanjulian and Josep Toutain. The inside story of the Spanish Studio/Agency (Toutain Studio) that transformed the Warren empire and brought an unprecedented realism into comics! This glorious book from illustrators is lavishly illustrated not only with Warren art, but with other comics projects, foreign publications, special projects, even specialty paintings never before seen. Finally we learn about these amazing talents that took comics by storm in the seventies and challenged U.S. artists with their abundant talent and creativity. Some nudity. Book Palace, 2016. Out of Print. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: IQS01
Magazine, 8x11, 144pg, Partial Color

2. ART OF REGINALD HEADE
Import from England. Our Highest Recommendation. By Stephen James Walker. Reginald Heade is renowned amongst vintage paperback fans and collectors as the pre-eminent British pulp fiction cover artist of the 1940s and 1950s. His beautifully-rendered, erotically-charged depictions of a parade of sexy, scantily-clad young virgins and vixens – the so-called "Heade Women", are near-legendary amongst lovers of classic pin-up art. This encompasses the famous Hank Janson novels, dozens of other outstanding pin-up style and erotic covers, plus his less-well-known but equally exceptional work for adult hardback fiction dustjackets, children's books and periodicals. Telos, 2017...More.

Item Code: ARRHH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x11, 168pg, Full Color
$49.00

We only found out about this from a customer I met at a show. I was thrilled, since I collect this artist's original paperback covers--when I can find them. The same publisher also published new editions of several of Heade's Hank Janson novels with the original covers, which we also now have in stock.

3. ART OF JON WHITCOMB
Almost Gone! Limited, 1000. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. A spectacular new art book from The Illustrated Press. 300 full color images, many from original paintings and drawings, plus rare photographs, and lots of magazine covers, advertising pieces, and story illustrations. Whitcomb was a pioneer in the switch from oil to gouache. He zoomed in on people, usually pretty young women, and became one of the top illustrators from the '40s to the 1960s, a major contributor in Collier's, McCalls', Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and other major magazines. Illustrated Press, 2017. Out of Print....More.

Item Code: ARTJWH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 224pg, Partial Color
$44.95

Illustrated Press has been producing some amazing books and this is another fine example. Once again, this is the first book ever on this important artist.

4. GOBLIN MARKET Signed
Over 100 drawings and water color paintings. Signed! Our Highest Recommendation. One of our favorite artists illustrates one of our favorite fantasy tales, the 19th century narrative poem written by Christina Rossetti, sister of PRB artist D.G. Rossetti. Over 100 drawings and watercolor paintings are packed into an 88-page full color book, an oversized 10x12 inch hardcover with a printed dust jacket and an introduction written by the one and only Charles Vess. This is mind-bogglingly good. Rayyan has pulled out each and every stop and gone way beyond mere illustration. This is a masterpiece, and I think the finest work I've ever seen from him. Omar, 2017...More.

Item Code: GOBMHS
Hard Cover, 88pg, b&w
$35.00

This was actually published by Donald M. Grant, the long-time publisher now run by Robert Weiner. Robert is a huge fan of Omar's artwork and his support made this book possible. It's also available with an original drawing by Omar on the title page, and these finely detailed pencil drawings are all different [GOBMD. $85].

5. SPECTRUM Volume 24
The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by John Fleskes. This volume features over 500 works by more than 300 diverse visionaries, including new Grand Master Bill Sienkiewicz, plus Julie Bell, Brom, Rovina Cai, Terry Dodson, Cory Godbey, J. Anthony Kosar, Anita Kunz, Dave McKean, Tran Nguyen, Karla Ortiz, David Palumbo, Forest Rogers, Dan dos Santos, and Allen Williams. Spectrum 24 continues the freshness and excellence that was established twenty-four years ago. Plus The Year in Review by John Fleskes, photos of the jury and award winners, and much more. Flesk, 2017...More.

Item Code: SPE24
Soft Cover, 9x12, 304pg, Full Color
$35.00 $29.95

The quantity sold on this was combined with the hardcover numbers, which is our usual way of determining bestsellers. Fortunately the hardcover remains in print, although previous years are no longer available except as Rare & Out of Print books. See our website. Hardcover [SPE24H. $45, your price $39.95].

6. IMAGES #13
Closeout Price! Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. A handsomely-selected tasteful mix of the best, well mounted, printed. It has my vote for its long life." That's how Alex Toth described the first issue. Here's Jim: "I scour original source material--magazines and books--from before 1923 for the most beautiful and forgotten images by famous and forgotten illustrators. Using the best technology available today on museum quality stock...I try to give century-old art the benefit of modern reproduction technology and display these artists as they have never been seen before. Flesk, 2017...More.

Item Code: IMA13
Soft Cover, 9x11, 304pg, Full Color
$30.00 $9.95

My old partner Jim Vadeboncoeur's fine magazine, the final and biggest issue. Other issues made it into the top sellers but this one was the top seller, so I haven't included the others here. All issues remain available from #1 to #12. The long out-of-print issues #1-5 we restocked from Jim due to his move to Paris, and we offer all these at the original cover price of $20 each. #6-12 are all discounted to $9.95 like #13.

7. EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER Signed Deluxe
Closeout Price! Signed & limited, 700! The Artist's Journey through Popular Culture 1942-62. Our Highest Recommendation. By Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. and Everett Raymond Kinstler. Signed by Everett and Jim Vadeboncouer, Jr. on a hand-numbered bound-in print. The book comes in a red cloth-bound numbered slipcase with gold-stamped title. Kinstler's work hangs in museums, boardrooms, banks, private collections, The White House, and in the homes of his clients and friends. Before portraiture became his life's work, he spent the 1940s and 1950s honing his craft in comic books: Hawkman for DC's The Flash, Black Hood and Black Terror for Standard, and dozens upon dozens of covers, inside cover contents pages, and stories for those delightfully lurid Avon titles like Eerie, Cowpuncher, Dalton Brothers, Jesse James, Strange Worlds, etc. And illustrating for pulp magazines like The Shadow, Doc Savage and Detective Tales! JVJ, 2005...More.

Item Code: EVED
Hard Cover, 8x11, 244pg, Partial Color
$95.00 $30.00

Also from my former partner Jim Vadeboncoeur--he worked closed with Kinstler himself to create this fine tribute to the artist. Again, since Jim moved and could not keep storing his stock of these, we took over his remaining stock of this and the regular unsigned hardcover [EVEH. $44.95, your price $14.95].

8. ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #55
Featuring Don Maitz. Our Highest Recommendation. The work of book cover artist extraordinaire Don Maitz, illustrated profusely with examples of his original cover paintings and with a brand-new interview by Gary Lovisi. Accompanied by dozens of gorgeous reproductions from original paintings as well as classic book covers. Then we have pen & ink artist Dan Beard, and his collaboration, c.1889, with Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Finally, the packaging illustrations of Charles Clarence Dawson, created for the line of Val-Mor products in the 40s and 50s for an exclusively black customer base. Illustrated Press, 2017...More.

Item Code: IL55
Magazine, 8x11, 96pg, Full Color
$15.00

The next issue, #56, also came in here in our top ten but I didn't have room for both. That one features magazine illustrator Saul Tepper, and 1950s paperback cover artist James Avati.

9. REYNOLD BROWN A Life in Pictures
Updated edition, limited to 1000. Our Highest Recommendation. By Daniel Zimmer. This spectacular art book explores the life and work of one of the greatest movie poster artists in Hollywood history. This whopping 304 page new edition adds 80 new pages to the original 2009 edition--which quickly sold out--and is loaded with stunning illustrations reproduced from vintage movie posters, photos, and the original paintings and drawings. This is a fine document of Reynold's work, and features images from every facet of his long career, from men's magazines to top-rated films and images we've all had imprinted on our brains, even if we didn't know they were Brown's work. Illustrated Press, 2017...More.

Item Code: REYBH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 304pg, Full Color
$49.95

We devoted a catalog cover to this. The first edition sold out very quickly several years ago--I felt like we barely offered it before it was gone. Dan Zimmer added 80 pages to this revised edition, making it a far larger book. Brown is not a household name like other illustrators because he was creating movie posters which rarely credit the artist. But he did images that any baby boomer is going to immediately recognize.

10. BLACK & WHITE IMAGES Fifth Annual Collection
Closeout Price! Limited, 2,000! Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. From the Golden Age of Pen & Ink illustration, 1890-1922. Packed with gorgeous b&w art, featuring the next installment of Herbert Railton's The Haunted House, the earliest known work of Frank C. Papé (1902), all the art from an 1897 L'Image article on Daniel Vierge, and an extended section on Will Crawford. Vadeboncoeur, 2010...More.

Item Code: IMAA05
Soft Cover, 9x12, 106pg, b&w
$25.00 $9.95

The other issues of Vadeboncoeur's series also appear in our top sellers in this category, because they became discounted this year as mentioned above. Where the typical Images issues boast fewer pages, these b&w annuals are more like books, with more than twice the page count. They always do very well for me at book shows, showing black and white artwork can still captivate.

11. ART OF NESTOR REDONDO
1000-copy first printing. Highly Recommended. Edited by Manual Auad. Nestor Redondo (1928-1995) was the Philippine's foremost comic book illustrator starting in the early 1950s, and a major U.S. comics artist in the 1970s and early '80s. He was really more of an illustrator than a cartoonist, boldly shown here with an abundance of superbly rendered illustrations. This book is a pure delight. Redondo had a smooth, capable line that will remind you of the finest inkers in comics: Mark Schultz, Frank Frazetta, Dave Stevens, Russ Manning. Yes, he is THAT good. Auad, 2016...More.

Item Code: ARTNR
Soft Cover, 8x11, 80pg, b&w
$24.95

This modest limited edition is from Auad Publishing, who has done books on Al Parker, Henry Raleigh, Frank Brangwyn and, all now out of print, several on Alex Toth. Redondo may just be the finest illustrator of all the Filipino artists who invaded U.S. comics. And don't let this slip by you, it's a stunning little book.

12. SENSUOUS FRAZETTA
Our Highest Recommendation. By J. David Spurlock. Art by Frank Frazetta. Vampirella, Dejah Thoris, The Egyptian Queen, The Golden Girl: No one renders exotic women better than Frazetta. Until now, only the most ardent collectors possessed the elusive grail items Frank drew for early-1960s men's magazine and "soft-core" paperbacks interiors. Vanguard, 2016...More.

Item Code: SENF
Soft Cover, 8x11, 160pg, Partial Color
$24.95

Also still available in the hardcover [SENFH. $39.95] and Deluxe Limited [SENFD. $69.95]. The latter boasts 16 extra pages and a handsome slipcase.

13. MASTERS OF SPANISH COMIC BOOK ART
Our Highest Recommendation. By David Roach. A celebration of the artists who revolutionized horror comics in the 1970s in Warren's Vampirella, Creepy, and Eerie. But much, much more: the first-ever, comprehensive history of Spanish comic book art reveals their extraordinary success -- in Spain, America, and around the world. 80 artists are examined, including legends like Esteban Maroto, Sanjulian, Segrelles, Jose Gonzalez, Jordi Bernet, Enrich, Victor De La Fuente, Jose Ortiz and Luis Garcia Mozos. 500 illustrations, half scanned directly from the original artwork! Moderate nudity & adult themes. Dynamite, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: MASCBAH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 8x11, 272pg, Full Color
$39.99

The IIlustration Quarterly Special #1: Spanish Artists, our #1 bestseller in this category, came out almost simultaneously with this, but they are entirely different books, covering some of but not all the same artists.

14. DRAWING FROM HISTORY The Forgotten Art of Fortunino Matania
Limited, 1000! Our Highest Recommendation. By Lucinda Gosling. Foreword by James Gurney. This is the ultimate art book featuring one of the most talented and respected illustrators of the 20th century, but still little known outside a small group of fans. Enjoy his meticulously accurate historical drawings and paintings of antiquity, the Roman era, British history and English Kings and Queens, his book illustrations for Kipling stories, Edgar Rice Burroughs, When Worlds Collide and a major selection of his historic World War One illustrations. Tasteful nudity. Book Palace, 2016...More.

Item Code: DRFMH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 10x13, 340pg, Partial Color
$90.00

There was also a deluxe limited edition of this but it just recently sold out. At the same time the publisher did a for-sale catalog which featured about 50% of the images in this book, and 50% new images that didn't make the book above. That is also still available [ARFM. $30]. It's a great starter book if $90 is a bit much to invest in an artist relatively unknown to most people. But wait until you see his work.

15. 101 GREAT ILLUSTRATORS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE 1890-1925
Our Highest Recommendation. By Jeff A. Menges. The most comprehensive book of its kind, this gorgeous edition presents more than 500 reproductions by famous and even more interesting, lesser-known artists from the heyday of book and magazine illustration. Featured artists include Edmund Dulac, Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, Arthur Rackham, N. C. Wyeth, and many others — but also lesser-recognized greats like Will Crawford, Helen Stratton, Edward Penfield, E.J. Sullivan, Charles E. Chambers, 101 in all. Several examples of each artist's finest illustrations are accompanied by well-written biographical comments and career notes. Dover, 2017...More.

Item Code: 101GR
Soft Cover, 8x11, 256pg, Partial Color
$34.95 $26.95

Comic Book Archives

Sale-priced items dominate this category, led by our favorite Underwood title but then the PS Artbooks take over with so many, too many to list here, now on sale in both regular and slipcased editions. The Classics Illustrated editions continue to do well as they appear. Kurtzman's Trump was a long overdue and outstanding collection.

1. TELLING STORIES The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta Hardcover Slipcased
Now bargain-priced. Highly Recommended. Art by Frank Frazetta. Fantasy art's most popular painter was also one of the most popular comic book illustrators during the industry's golden age. Telling Stories: The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta celebrates the rare and largely forgotten stories created five decades ago by this iconic artist. These jungle adventures, true-life tales of heroism, and dreamy love stories not only exhibit the skill of a master craftsman but also provide tantalizing glimpses of where the young artist's career would ultimately take him. Hardcover in slipcase! This was the ONLY trade edition of this book. Underwood Books, 2008...More.

Item Code: TELSH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x12, 192pg, Partial Color
$49.95 $24.95

As part of the Underwood Publisher Archives we've offered, he enabled us to discount several of his books that were still left in inventory. This came out in 2008, during the economic meltdown, and I believe many folks missed it. Sporting a slipcase and superb art, it's a sleeper that people are now discovering at half the published price. We also have a Super Deluxe ($500) and Super Deluxe Lettered Edition ($650) in very small quantities.

2. PLANET COMICS Volume 13
Closeout Price! Collects #60-66, 1949-52. Highly Recommended. By George Evans, Leonard Starr, Graham Ingels et al. Long before Star Wars, there was Planet Comics, home to a veritable parade of steely-jawed interstellar adventurers and some of the most gorgeous damsels in distress you could ever hope to find. And this is their prime, with the legendary “Futura,” the first and perhaps best drawn space-damsels in distress. Wonderful art by the unsung Enrico Bagnoli! PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Item Code: PLC13H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 314pg, Full Color
$59.99 $19.95

Almost but not all of the other volumes of Planet also did very well for us; this is the next-to-last volume. The title got better as it progressed, picking up artists like Murphy Anderson, Graham Ingels and Matt Baker around the #30's and 40's. Ask about the other on-sale issues still available, including Volume 14, the last one.

3. PRE-CODE CLASSICS WEIRD TERROR Volume 1
Closeout Price! Collects #1-7, 1952-53. Recommended. By Don Heck, Rudy Palais, Pete Morisi et al. Hey, it's all here, culture-lovers: walking dead folks (loads of ‘em)--some of them even still sporting their heads—witches, ghosts, werewolves and enough vampires to go into the second-hand dentures business. Another oddball pre-code horror title, this time from tiny publisher Comic Media, who recognized the talent of Don Heck and used him for many of their best covers (and stories). They also published Danger, Horrific and Terrific, all titles well known for their extreme violence, over-the-top horror, pretty girls and more. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Item Code: PCWT01H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10,
$59.99 $19.95

Another PS Artbook title that went on sale. We were lucky enough to score a bunch of titles before they were made available to a larger U.S. audience. So we still have a great many of these in stock which are no longer to be found in Half-Price Books that brought these in as new remainder books. Our next catalog, in February, will feature a large section devoted to these, but you can look at them all by clicking here.

4. CLASSIC COMICS #21 Three Famous Mysteries
By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle et al. Art by Louis Zansky, Arnold Hicks et al. From 1949, one of the most collectible of all the early classics. Not only does this feature an adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes story, but also a classic from Poe and a third tale by de Maupassant, less known but in his day a master of horror. Includes short biographies of all three writers. Jack Lake, 2016...More.

Item Code: CLC21
Soft Cover, 6x9, 48pg, Full Color
$10.00

Our #10 in in this category was Classic Comics #174 Captain Blood. The above title is not a suprise to find here, since it's one of the most desirable issues, with Sherlock Holmes.

5. HARVEY KURTZMAN'S TRUMP
Highly Recommended. By Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood, Will Elder, Al Jaffee, Jack Davis et al. Trump was a lavish color satire magazine Harvey Kurtzman created for Hugh Hefner after leaving MAD in 1956. With a star-studded cast (Mel Brooks, Will Elder, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Al Jaffee) and Playboy's money and clout, Trump should have been huge. But for complex financial reasons, Hefner pulled the plug while the third issue was in production. Never before collected, issues #1 and #2 and never-before-seen art, including the surviving contents of ithe third issue! Dark Horse, 2016...More.

Item Code: HKT02H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x12, 190pg, Partial Color
$29.99 $24.99

Not only do you get the first two issues, but all kinds of previously unpublished material for #3 which never appeared. Also, don't miss the Eisner-award winning Harvey Kurtzman: The Man Who Created Mad [HARKH $34.99]. It's a massive book on his career and comes with a bookplate signed by author Bill Schelly.

6. FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 11
Closeout Price! Collects #65-70, 1958. Recommended. By Richard Hughes, Ogden Whitney et al. Tales exploring the supernatural, science fiction and more. More very readable, poignant and fun stories by the great writer/editor Richard Hughes. Whisked back to Egyptian times, seeing your mirror image as an oldster, lost on a planet of giants, or a giant among tiny aliens, apparitions, test pilot to a different dimension. Obviously sci-fi was popular in 1958, sparked by the Sputnik, and you'll find a lot of cool stories here. Very handsomely drawn by Ogden Whitney, John Forte, John Rosenberger, Harry Lazarus and others. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Item Code: FOR11H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 240pg, Full Color
$59.99 $19.95

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Nearly every other issue is also on sale. Like Planet Comics above, these also get better as they came out, with the best stories around and after the comics code, circa 1955. Writer of most of these was Richard Hughes, a brilliant and original author who also created Herbie. He kept this and Adventures into the Unknown alive in the late 1950s, when times were tough and titles were cancelled every month.

7. PRE-CODE CLASSICS AVON'S EERIE Volume 1
Closeout Price! Collects #1-7, 1951-52. Recommended. By Wally Wood, Joe Kubert, Joe Orlando et al. Avon remains a fan favorite company for their top drawer artists, sexy covers, and wild stories. Along with Strange Worlds, Eerie was their mainstay title, starting in 1951 and lasting until #17, in 1954. Before moving to EC, Wally Wood was the premier artist, working with studio-mate Joe Orlando, regularly on the covers and in most issues. PS Artbooks, 2016...More.

Item Code: PCE01H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 252pg, Full Color
$59.99 $27.99

All three issues of this are on sale. Being from Avon, they are excellent, with more by Wood and other good artists.

8. STAR TREK GOLD KEY 100-PAGE SPECTACULAR
Bargain-priced. Recommended. By Dick Wood and Len Wein. Art by Nevio Zaccara, Alberto Giolitti. A special 100-page collection of classic Gold Key Star Trek comics. Created by writers and artists who had not seen the show often (or at all) and worked off of whatever publicity materials they could get their hands on, the Gold Key Comics are true 1960s gems. Needless to say, the end results were definitely unusual -- and very un-Trek in some cases (A blond Scotty! Spock kills! The Enterprise belches fire!). IDW, 2017...More.

Item Code: STTRG
Soft Cover, 7x10, 100pg, Full Color
$7.99

This is a surprise to find here. But it's bargain priced, and many of us were scoring anything Star Trek back when the original series was on, and Dell was doing regular issues.

9. TAKE THAT, ADOLF! The Fighting Comic Books of The Second World War
Our Highest Recommendation. By Mark Fertig. From Superman, Wonder Woman and Daredevil to propaganda and racism, Take That, Adolf! offers a long, highly detailed look at how comics embraced the war, sold zillions to kids as well as soldiers, and who did it all, including rare female creators. And Wonder Woman wasn't the only heroine to punch her way into the hearts of fans. The early (and sexier) Black Cat, The Woman in Red, Miss America, Miss Victory...they are each explored here also. Fantagraphics, 2017...More.

Item Code: TAKTA
Soft Cover, 8x11, 244pg
$29.99 $26.99

Today the most collectible Golden Age comics are those with covers featuring Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini. This is an amazing who's who of hundreds of titles, many that will suprise you, and all the finest artists of the period, from Reed Crandall to Mac Raboy.

Artist Editions

Artist's Editions are now appearing not just from IDW but from Titan (Charles Vess' Book of Ballads and Sagas), Fantagraphics (Prince Valiant Studio Edition, which is virtually sold out now, 4 left as I write this), Dynamite (Jose Gonzales' Vampirella), and DC/Graphitti Designs (Batman The Dark Knight Returns). IDW has also begun doing "Artifact Editions" which are similar but smaller and lower priced. I like the fact some of these now feature complete stories, so you can enjoy the art AND read them at the same time.

1. BERNIE WRIGHTSON Artifact Edition Cover A
Almost Gone! Swamp Thing Cover. Our Highest Recommendation. Introduction by Michael Kaluta. Bernie Wrightson began his career in the late 1960s, just barely out of his teens, and within a decade rose to prominence as the preeminent horror artist of his generation. This loving tribute to comics' Master of the Macabre showcases Wrightson's ground breaking work in the DC Comics Mystery books and his legendary artistic turn on Swamp Thing. Additionally, a number of rarely seen and completely (until now) unseen treasures have been assembled here. Six fold-outs, many pieces in full color. IDW, 2017. Out of Print....More.

Item Code: BWAEHA
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 12x17, 144pg, b&w
$125.00

This and Cover B both went out of print almost immediately--but we were very lucky to have the publisher allow us a few more copies of each, and we still have a few left if you act quickly. With Bernie passing away, interest in all of his work has been very highly of late. As I write this, we have just 8 cover B and 10 cover A left.

2. JACK KIRBY FANTASTIC FOUR Artist's Edition
Highly Recommended. By Stan Lee. Art by Jack Kirby. Now, with the cooperation of the Jack Kirby Estate and under license from Marvel Comics, IDW presents the first Jack Kirby Fantastic Four Artist's Edition! Including FF Annual #6, ALL 48-pages! Also presenting THE COMPLETE issues #71 ("And So It Ends") and #82 through #84, all guest starring the Inhumans plus bringing in Doctor Doom in #84--plus a beautiful gallery section of some of Kirby's most incredible pages, all scanned from the original art! Item Code: JKFFAEH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 12x17, 144pg, b&w
$125.00

Also available is JACK KIRBY FANTASTIC FOUR The World's Greatest Artist's Edition.
For a great many fans, myself included, Stan and Jack's Fantastic Four issues are among our very favorite Marvel work. It was a high point in both men's careers, including the creation of new spin-off characters that today are big parts of the Marvel Universe. And these are complete stories, so you can enjoy reading each issue.

3. DAVE STEVENS' ROCKETEER Artisan Edition
Our Highest Recommendation. Direct Market Exclusive Edition! Each page of art, showing blue pencils and finished b&w inking, has been scanned from Dave Stevens' gorgeous original art. Collecting the entire Rocketeer saga,119 pages and 7 covers, from 1981-94,  featuring his iconic, pulp-inspired hero. Dave's first artist edition is long, long sold out, but here we are treated to an entirely new collection of his signature creation.

4. REED CRANDALL'S EC STORIES Artist's Edition
Our Highest Recommendation. By Reed Crandall. Reed Crandall was one of the greatest comic artists of the Golden Age and early Silver Age. His work graced the covers and pages of National Comics (drawing the iconic Uncle Sam), as well as BlackhawkDoll Man and many others. Legendary for his remarkable talents as a draftsman, he was the quintessential "Artist's Artist." And then he joined EC! This focuses on Crandall's remarkable EC Comics stories, including many that are outright classics. Huge size, as the art was done old style, twice up. IDW, 2017...More.

Item Code: RCEAEH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 15x22, 144pg, b&w
$150.00

5. MICHAEL WM KALUTA STARSTRUCK Artist's Edition
Highly Recommended. By Michael Kaluta. Michael Kaluta is one of the most revered and versatile artists in comics and illustration. He is frequently recognized as the definitive artist of The Shadow, has been praised for his Lord of the Rings paintings, and illustrated the Metropolis novel. Graphic Novels

It's getting harder for us to say whether a book is a graphic novel or an Archive. So we've narrowed our definition down so that if something collects issues of a comic book, no matter how old or new the issues are, we now call them Archives. Stand-alone books not done as comics now appear below--mostly.

1. CARAVAGGIO 1 THE PALETTE AND THE SWORD
Highly Recommended. By Milo Manara. Comics master Milo Manara returns to Dark Horse with his newest graphic novel. Chronicling the pleasure and burdens of the painter's early years in Rome, this seminal work is Manara's love letter to Caravaggio, one of the most revered and influential artists in history. His naked models and their antics are perfect for Manara's skills. His drawings of ancient Rome and the painter's early years are just amazing. This is Manara in the grand erotic style and yet a new side of the artist, with more serious and powerful imagery. Dark Horse, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: CARAV01H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 8x11, 62pg, Full Color
$19.99 $17.99

2. DAYS OF WRATH
Recommended. By Wayne Vansant. Award winning comic writer and artist Wayne Vansant brings his gripping World War II saga of war in the Pacific to Guadalcanal and the Battle of Bloody Ridge. This is the powerful story of the long, vicious battle for Guadalcanal that occurred in 1942-43. When the U.S. Navy orders its outnumbered and outgunned ships to run from the Japanese fleet, they abandon American troops on a bloody, battered island in the South Pacific and the men left on Guadalcanal find out that there will be no prisoners taken on either side. Caliber, 2017...More.

Item Code: DAYW
Soft Cover, 7x10, 112pg, b&w
$16.99 $15.49

Historical events told in the form of graphic novels continue to hold interest for our customers. I also greatly enjoy reading AND learning at the same time. Wayne Vansant's novels about World War II are among our steadiest sellers in this category.

3. WONDER WOMAN Her Greatest Battles
Recommended. Cover by Frank Cho. In these stories from such top-tier comics talents as Greg Rucka, George Pérez, John Byrne, Brian Azzarello, Jim Lee, Cliff Chiang and Gail Simone, the Amazing Amazon must use every ounce of her strength and steel to bring down gods, monsters and—when mind-controlling villains take control—even her friends. Collects Wonder Woman #6, #119, #210, #219; Wonder Woman #41; Justice League: Part Three #3; Wonder Woman #23. DC, 2017...More.

Item Code: WWHGB
Soft Cover, 6x10, 168pg, Full Color
$9.99

With the popularity of the film, 2017 saw a LOT of new Wonder Woman collections. But this was the best of all of them for us.

4. HELLBOY INTO THE SILENT SEA Signed
Signed bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. By Mike Mignola and Gary Gianni. Brilliant illustrator Gary Gianni (Prince Valiant, George R.R. Martin's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) draws a complete-in-itself new Hellboy graphic novel! Hellboy sets sail from the wreckage of a deserted island only to cross paths with a ghost ship. Taken captive by the phantom crew, Hellboy is in the wrong place at the wrong time as a wanna-be witch on board is going to drag up all the dark denizens of hell to do her bidding. Stunning fine-line artwork in the tradition of Wrightson and Dore's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Dark Horse, 2017...More.

Item Code: HELINTS
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 56pg, Full Color
$14.99

A stand-alone issue, and the only Hellboy ever drawn by the fine Gary Gianni, who drew the Prince Valiant Sunday page for many years and did several other fine projects involving Robert E. Howard characters. His sketchbook is still available, his sale-priced The Prince Valiant Page both also appear below, along with his Verne as the next item. Gary may just make the most appearances of any creator this year in our bestsellers.

5. JULES VERNE'S TWENTY-THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Highly Recommended. By Jules Verne. Adapted by Gary Gianni. Introduction by Ray Bradbury. The classic tale of Nemo and the fearsome Nautilus submarine is retold in a wonderful new graphic novel, capturing the vintage feel of the original story, written in the 1860s. The combination of Verne's masterful storytelling and Gianni's dynamic graphic style makes this exciting adventure of life in the first submarine not to be missed. Flesk, 2009...More.

Item Code: JUH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 64pg, Full Color
$24.95 $9.95

Another fun book by Gianni, capturing the original story to a 't'.

6. DEJAH THORIS Soldier of Memory
By Frank J. Barbiere. Art by Francesco Manna and Nen Chang. Dejah Thoris, the exotic heroine of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Warlord of Mars, as you've never seen her before! When her father disappears, Dejah Thoris assumes the throne... but she soon stands accused of treason, a victim of a far-reaching conspiracy. Dynamite, 2016...More.

Item Code: DJSM
Soft Cover, 7x10, 160pg, Full Color
$19.99 $17.99

Among all the Dejah Thoris books, this was the standout and perhaps more accessible being out of the regular series.

7. BATMAN '66 MEETS STEED AND MRS PEEL Hardcover
Collects #1-6, 2016. By Ian Edginton. Art by Matthew Dow Smith. It's the greatest international crossover of the 60s that never happened—until now! Batman and Robin, fighting side by side with England's John Steed and Emma Peel! When Bruce Wayne and his fetching new British business associate find themselves caught up in Catwoman's caper to steal England's White Star diamond, Batman is nowhere to be found—but in the Caped Crusader's absence, gentleman spy Jonathan Steed and his intrepid colleague Mrs. Peel are good enough to stop by and trap the thief! DC, 2017...More.

Item Code: BATMSH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 7x10, 144pg, Full Color
$24.99 $21.99

The Batman '66 and Wonder Woman '77 books have had mixed success for us, but this one hit the mark for fans of both of the classic tv series.

Sketchbooks

Artists really cut back on new sketchbooks this year. We only found a handful at Comic-Con in July. Many artists are doing prints now that sell for $10 and up, or nothing at all. But we are pleased that there are still enough new sketchbooks to get this section going.

1. MODELING MANDY Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. By Dean Yeagle. Dean creates a character, Frad the Frog, to narrate the story of Dean Yeagle's creation of the beautiful Mandy. From first pencil sketches of real life models, he gets Mandy to do similar poses as these models, but she doesn't always cooperate! She is in various stages of undress while she poses on a stool, stretching and swinging from ropes, and into even more contortions. The last 10 pages show her in various poses, in full glorious color. A great new collection, the annual event from Dean. Caged Beagle, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: MODMS
Soft Cover, 9X11, 48pg, Partial Color
$20.00

Dean Yeagle steals both #1 and #2 spots, with his annual Mandy collection from 2017 and 2016. He unveils each new book at the San Diego Comic-Con in July, and we remain one of the very few sources for these. You can see all his previous sketchbooks on our website.

2. MANDY GO ROUND Signed
Signed! Our Highest Recommendation. By Dean Yeagle. Mandy herself narrates the story of Dean Yeagle's commission to paint Mandy riding twelve carousel animals! From first pencil sketch to the finished works, here's a tongue-in-cheek story as she introduces herself, disrobes, poses in various positions, is introduced to a variety of potential animals who could be carousel themes...leave it to Dean to create a wonderful storyline, while exposing the lovely Mandy as the beautiful, voluptuous innocent that she is. The finished carousel scenes are in full glorious color. Abundant nudity. 2016. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: MANGRS
Soft Cover, 8x11, 48pg, Partial Color
$20.00

3. SEVEN KINGDOMS SKETCHBOOK Signed with Drawing
Signed & limited, 750! Our Highest Recommendation. By Gary Gianni. Gianni's self-published collection of sketches for the George R.R. Martin bestselling novel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Three color prelims and 120 pencil drawings, many preliminary drawings that were never used, others changed and developed into the book's illustrations. Gary has generously done a very small pencil drawing in each of our copies. Full page as well as multiple images of swordfights, characters, encampments, a wedding, a diminutive female archer, royalty, and much more. Hieronymus Press, 2016...More.

Item Code: SEVKS
Soft Cover, 9x12, 68pg, b&w
$20.00

Gary surprised us when he turned up at the 2017 Vintage Paperback show as a guest. At the end of the show he gave me a copy for my own collection--and I jumped at the chance to handle it.

4. DAWN 2017 Sketchbook Signed
Signed! Highly Recommended. By Joseph Michael Linsner. Linsner proves himself once again a master of the female form. A slew of wonderful Dawn images in various seductive oufits including his patented skin-tight outfits that might as well be nude. Here too is new work including Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Batman, two wonderful Batgirls, and a Swampgirl dedication to Bernie Wrightson, most from 2017. The centerfold and covers are both double page/wrap around illustrations. Entirely in full color. Linsner, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: DAW17S
Soft Cover, 5x8, 24pg, Full Color
$20.00

Limited to 1000 individually numbered copies, a full-color, 9x12 inch hardcover art book featuring contributions from guests and artists including Ben Templesmith, Brett Bean, Geof Darrow & Dave Stewart, Gerhard, Elias Chatzoudis et al. 6. DAVE STEVENS Selected Sketches & Studies Volume 2
Closeout Price! Limited, 1500. Highly Recommended. By Dave Stevens. The second-ever sketchbook produced by the premier good-girl artist of recent times. Dave created The Rocketeer and was the prime mover in Bettie Page being rediscovered. Published by Dave himself, here are the last copies (Dave didn't sign them all, thus these are unsigned), full of amazing full nudes, character studies, unpublished art--good girls to die for. Bulldog Studios, 2003. Out of Print. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: DAVE02
Soft Cover, 9x11, 32pg, b&w
$20.00 $7.50

The only reason this is so inexpensive is that Dave left us ALL his remaining sketchbooks when he passed away. Every other one is now gone, but we still have some of these left.

7. WILLIAM STOUT TRIBUTE TO WILLIS O'BRIEN #2 Signed
Signed & numbered, 950! Recommended. By William Stout. The long awaited second volume of Bill's tribute to stop motion animation master Willis O'Brien, best known as the man who created and animated the creatures for Bill's favorite movie: the 1933 King Kong, as well as Mighty Joe Young, Citizen Kane, The Lost World, The Black Scorpion, and various Ray Harryhausen projects. This book is full of action packed sketches of King Kong, the Black Scorpion, and of course dinosaurs. These volumes are all signed and numbered by Bill himself. Terra Nova, 2017...More.

Item Code: WSTWO02
Soft Cover, 8x11, 70pg, b&w
$20.00

This has even outsold Bill's regular annual sketchbook. Interest in King Kong and its creator Willis O'Brien remains strong year after year. Volume 1 [WSTWO. $20] is still available.

Comic Strip Collections

1. PRINCE VALIANT Volume 15
Sunday Pages, 1965-66. Our Highest Recommendation. By Hal Foster. Foreword by Brian M. Kane with Bob Fujitani. After traveling the North Atlantic, shipwrecks and pirate attacks lead Prince Arn and his newly formed crew to the New World, where trade deals soon turn into hostage negotiations. When enemy tribes attack, Arn's band of Vikings teams up with the Algonquins to repel the invaders, leading to a long-overdue peace treaty and the discovery of the St. Lawrence seaway. Meanwhile, Mordred plots his revenge and schemes another attack on Camelot when Val and his family are at their most vulnerable. Fantagraphics, 2017...More.

Item Code: PV15H
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 10x14, 112pg, Full Color
$34.99 $27.95

Always in our top strip sellers, this is nearly at the end of the Foster-drawn pages. He turned the strip over to John Cullen Murphy in 1970, but still provided layouts for a time, and continued to write the page for TEN more years! Fantagraphics plans to keep collecting the pages through Cullen Murphy's era, and we hope beyond to include Gianni's and now Thomas Yeates pages. Except for Volume 5, all the other collections remain in print as I write this.

2. BLOOM COUNTY BRAND SPANKING NEW DAY Signed
Signed! San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive. By Berkeley Breathed. The blowhard-skewering saga continues, with all-new, never-before-printed strips featuring everyone's favorite penguin and all the other quirky denizens of the magical land called Bloom County. This second volume from the strip's 2015 relaunch follows just a year after Bloom County Episode XI: A New Hope, but, boy, have things changed. It seems like we need Opus, Bill, and the gang now more than ever. Special signed hardcover edition which we got from the publisher at Comic-Con. Limited number available. IDW, 2017...More.

Item Code: BCBSH
Hard Cover, 12x10, 144pg, Full Color
$50.00

This was a San Diego Comic-Con special edition, giving fans a chance to get a rare signature of this crazed creator. It's now available in an unsigned softcover edition [BCBS. $19.99, your price $17.99].

3. MODESTY BLAISE Volume 29 The Children of Lucifer
From 1998-99, the penultimate collection. Highly Recommended. By Peter O'Donnell and Enric Romero. The next-to-last Modesty collection, with three more action-packed episodes and more nudity that you can shake a stick at. Modesty is one beautiful lady, but she's also so, so dangerous if you cross her. And she proves it here.  Features the stories "The Hanging Judge," "Children of Lucifer" and "Death Symbol." Modesty even joins a film company and has to dress up as a barbarian, sword-swinging actress to try and save a beautiful girl who has been kidnapped and is being abused on live television. Titan, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: MB29
Soft Cover, 8x11, 104pg, b&w
$19.95 $16.95

4. THE PRINCE VALIANT PAGE
Our Highest Recommendation. By Gary Gianni. Foreword by Mike Mignola. Modern illustration master Gianni opens the vaults to his work on the legendary Prince Valiant Sunday Page, written by Mark Schultz. Gianni assumed the helm of the strip after John Cullen Murphy but far too few fans have seen his several years of pages, let alone the amazing work behind the published pages...until now. Every aspect of the new era of the strip is covered here, with a particular focus on Gianni's preliminary sketches and production methods. Flesk, 2008...More.

Item Code: PVPH
Hard Cover, 9x12, 112pg, Text/Partial Color
$29.95 $9.95

We also have just two copies left of the deluxe signed edition of this [PVPD. $39.95]. It's out of print now.

5. CONNIE Volume 3 & 4 Set
The Four Science Fiction Episodes, 1939. Highly Recommended. By Frank Godwin. If you never read another Connie, this is the one not to miss. This is the famous sci-fi sequence, where Connie and her friends blast off into space and find alien races and, more surprisingly, other earth people on Venus and the moons of Saturn. Godwin's beautiful line drawings (he later did the same beautiful work on Rusty Riley, after a long career in the slick magazines and advertising art), and his depiction of 1930s-era sci-fi, make this a must-have classic. Two book set with four stories: Captives of the Space Pirates, Master of the Jovian Moons, Battle for Titan and Predators of Polaria. Note: On page 50 and 51 in the story Predators of Polaria, the strips are reversed, but none are missing. Pacific Comics Club, 2009...More.

Item Code: CON02P
Soft Cover, 7x8, 140pg, 110pg, b&w
$29.90 $14.95

Also available at the same low price is the Connie Volume 1 & 2 set.

6. THE COMPLETE CHESTER GOULD'S DICK TRACY Volume 21
Dailies & Sundays, 1962-64. By Chester Gould. Dick Tracy leaps into the Space Age when Diet Smith's experimental Space Coupe brings back a visitor from outer space! Meet... Moon Maid, the most outrageous character in the strip's entire history. Prior to venturing where no detective has gone before, Tracy deals with some very earthbound--and gruesomely entertaining--adventures, including the use of napalm (!) to flush out a gang of crooks from their hideout. Also: 52 Gang, Junior a marked man, Sparkle Plenty in trouble... IDW, 2016...More.

Item Code: CC21H
Hard Cover, 11x9, 272pg, b&w
$44.99 $39.99

7. TWIN EARTHS Volume 4 & 5 Set
Warehouse find, 1992-93. Highly Recommended. By Oskar Lebeck. Art by Alden McWilliams. Twin Earths is an American science fiction comic strip that ran in Sunday and daily newspapers from 1952 until 1963. The story told of another Earth, in the same orbit as our planet but on the opposite side of the sun, whose scientifically advanced civilization is 92% women. Beautiful women! This is packed with flying saucers and McWilliams was a master at drawing them, along with all kinds of future-world techology. And beautiful ladies. A fan favorite strip, which was handsomely collected in a long series of thick softcovers, of which these are a part. Susor, 1992-93...More.

Item Code: TWIRTHP
Soft Cover, 8x11, 198pg, b&w
$6.95

This is a very rare case of a warehouse find making it into the top sellers--we used to offer sets of these, but these two issues were left when the others were gone, so we put them aside many years ago...and turned them up again. It's a fine strip, and hopefully one day will be collected in its entirety.

Underwood Books Publisher File Copies

It was really exciting for us to make available this archive of books that publisher Tim Underwood had put aside. Tim's family grew up with my kids, once he moved into this area, so we have worked together often.

Only in this deluxe edition will you also get an additional 16 pages not in the trade edition, including two previously unpublished oils and one watercolor and 13 very rare or unpublished major b&w illustrations. These are VERY early numbers, beginning with #2. We will fill orders numerically beginning with the earliest. Underwood Books, 1999. Out of Print. Mature Readers...More.

2. TELLING STORIES The Classic Comic Art of Frank Frazetta Super Deluxe Lettered
Almost Gone! Limited to 26 lettered copies, with print! Highly Recommended. Fantasy art's most popular painter was also one of the most popular comic book illustrators during the industry's golden age. Telling Stories: The Classic Comic Art of Frank Frazetta celebrates the rare and largely forgotten stories created five decades ago by this iconic artist. These jungle adventures, true-life tales of heroism, and dreamy love stories not only exhibit the skill of a master craftsman but also provide tantalizing glimpses of where the young artist's career would ultimately take him. Underwood Books, 2008. Out of Print....More.

Item Code: TELSSDL
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x12, 192pg, Partial Color
$650.00

3. THE ART OF JEFFREY JONES Signed Deluxe
Signed & numbered, 1200! 16 extra pages. Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner. Jeff passed away in 2011, but thanks to publisher Underwood Books, we are able to offer his finest art book complete with signature and slipcase and 16 bonus pages, at a price far below anything on the internet. From the 1960s through the early 1980s Jeffrey Jones was one of the most respected creators of fantasy and science fiction art. Comfortable as both a book cover illustrator and as a comics artist, Jones gained a large and loyal following that resulted in his being honored with a World Fantasy Award for Best Artist. Underwood Books, 2002. Out of Print. Mature Readers...More.

Item Code: ARTJJD
Hard Cover, 9x12, 176pg, Full Color
$140.00

This is darned close to being bargain priced, considering Jeffrey passed away a number of years ago. But Underwood had set aside enough copies that we were able to price this much lower than any you would find elsewhere. Very late in the year, we brought in copies of his hand-colored, signed print that was done for the super deluxe edition (of 52 copies) of Age of Innocence [JJAGEP. $200], plus two variant proof sets. See more by Jeff, including Age of Innocence itself, Idyl, and his Definitive collection, on our website.

The detailed hand-painted sculpture captures the mood and colors of the painting. 10 inches tall on a base strewn with the remains of vanquished foes. Limited, 600. Recommended. By Frank Cho. Sculpted by Jason Smith. The powerful beauty, created by Frank Cho, takes her place as one of the brand-new Women of Dynamite statues! Based on the masterful comic creator's art and sculpted by the ever-talented Jason Smith, the blonde warrior stands atop the skeletal remains of a triceratops skull. She's holding a spear in one hand, a knife in the other. Item Code: VAMM

This has been incredibly hot. If it had come out earlier in the year, it might have even been our #1 or #2 seller in this category. Amazing, it spans generations of pretty centerfold girls, changing norms, and so tells a story of femine beauty for each of us who may have grown up from the fifties to now.

I was sneaking copies out of my Dad’s bottom drawer in the 1960s. And besides the girls, it was there I discovered Little Annie Fanny by Kurtzman and crew, and the abridged article taken from Jules Feiffer’s seminal book, The Great Comic Book Heroes. That was the first-ever look back at 1940s comics for a great many of my generation. Thank you, Playboy!
