MAC RABOY Master of the Comics
The first-ever book on this hugely talented artist. Could sell out quickly. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. Introduction by Roy Thomas. Beginning with his WPA etchings during the 1930s, Mac Raboy struggled to survive the Great Depression and eventually found his way into the comics. He perfected his art style on early stories of Dr. Voodoo, Zoro-The Mystery Man, Bulletman, Spy Smasher, (all for Fawcett) and his own version of The Green Lama and, finally, his crowning achievement, Captain Marvel Jr. Raboy went on to illustrate the Flash Gordon Sunday newspaper strip, and left behind a legacy of meticulous perfection. Through extensive research and interviews with son David Raboy, and Raboy's Golden Age assistants, author Roger Hill brings Mac Raboy, the man and the artist, into focus. TwoMorrows, 2019...More.

This was featured on our Fall catalog cover. I was worried that it might go out of print quickly like Roger Hill's previous Twomorrows book, The Art of Reed Crandall. So I was very aggressive with my order, and we still have plenty.

Speaking of publisher Twomorrows, we currently have a white sale on our site. We are told this was a one-time only deal from them, so once they are gone, that's it at sale prices.

WESTERN ART OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY Cowboys
By E. Ashley Rooney. The first in a two-volume survey, readers are invited to re-examine the history of the West and its art through a multi-faceted contemporary lens. More than 40 artists are included who reflect the tremendous diversity, depth, and breadth of a field steeped in history. While some follow the traditions established by Remington and Russell, others seek to break from tradition, busting myths and bringing new insights and artistic styles to the genre. They come from both sides of the Mississippi and have pedigrees that range from bona fide cowboy or Native American credentials to careers in commercial illustration. The unifying theme is a common concern for and commitment to their art and the West itself. In this volume, contemporary artists are featured whose work revolves around the American Cowboy. Within these pages, many different artists, some of whom have been cowboys themselves, exhibit their rendition of the wonderful world of the West. Schiffer, 2019...More.

WESTERN ART OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY Native Americans
By E. Ashley Rooney. The second book in this two-volume survey, readers are invited to re-examine the history of the West and its art through a multi-faceted contemporary lens. More than 30 artists are included who reflect the tremendous diversity, depth, and breadth of a field steeped in history. In this volume, contemporary artists are featured whose work revolves around Native Americans. Native Americans still exist, and in many cases are thriving, as they revive or maintain their culture. Historically and even today, most imagery featuring native people suggests a lost cause or vanishing race. We hope that the art created on these pages will help reinforce the fact that Native American culture, while still threatened, is viable among many tribes. Schiffer, 2019...More.

Travel Notes

I'm in Europe this week, visiting my old partner Jim Vadeboncoeur. Several Facebook posts are already up, including some with artwork from vintage French publications Le Figaro Illustré and L'Illustration. That means I haven't been able to review the new items, so the descriptions are currently what we have from the publishers. I'll get these updated and add recommendations as soon as I can when I get back.

The exceptions are the Mac Raboy book...I saw an advance copy at OAF-Con last month, Alter Ego 161, which I got an advance copy of, since it has a tribute I wrote to Stan Lee, and Peeve du Jour, which I also got an advance copy of. And of course Sky Masters, this being a "slightly hurt" variant of the out of print volume.

I met twice with Frederic Manzano here, who has a store and also publishes, both under the name of Editions Déesee. He puts together these amazing, huge artist tributes that IDW has been doing editions of: Ditko Unleashed, Wallace Wood Woodwork (both still available from us), as well as the out of print titles examining John Buscema and Russ Heath. His next project is a new Wallace Wood book to accompany an exhibit at Angouleme in 2020. We will have a limited number of copies, with his help. He also is working on a portfolio of work by Brian Bolland, which we will also offer.
