FLEETWAY PICTURE LIBRARY CLASSICS Air War Stories
Recommended. Art by Ferdinando Tacconi, Nino Caroselli et al. Originally published in War Picture Library 49 and Air Ace Picture Library 11, 37 and 54, these four stories showcase the art of the great Ferdinando Tacconi. Tacconi's style is immediately recognizable, with a very clear linework, wisely using uncluttered lines limited to the essentials. The care he applied to the environment and details of each panel he drew, especially in his way of presenting vehicles or his beloved aircraft, made him one of the top artists around the world. In fact, Tacconi would never hide his deep love for flying machines, which accompanied him throughout his career. Book Palace, 2019...More.

News and Notes

The Art of Frank Cho

We should have our copies by June 30 or July 4th at the latest. Publisher John Fleskes is hand-delivering them to us, along with The Big Tease by Bruce Timm, above. John produced the signed hardcover only for his own sales. But he produced a special bookplate with art to go with our copies, and Frank has signed 100 of these exclusively for us. It's also available as an unsigned softcover.

New Pulp Collections

With Sanctum wrapping up their pulp series, including Doc Savage and The Shadow, I thought it time to look at what's new out there in pulp collections. I talked to the folks at Steeger Books, the new name for Altus Publishing. He gave me several good recommendations and we are bringing in these new series soon:

Steeger Books will reissue twenty-three vintage novels and stories by M.E. Chaber, whose Milo March Mysteries deliver mile-a-minute action and breezily readable entertainment for suspense buffs. The first six releases are ready now.

Written by Green Lama creator Ken Crossen under the Chaber pen name, the Milo March thrillers are fondly recalled by paperback collectors for the spectacular Robert McGinnis paintings on the covers of the 1970s series.

New, bonus articles, interviews, and rare images are featured in most of the volumes. There will also be two never-before-collected novels and a book of short fiction.

Milo March is an insurance investigator who takes on the toughest cases and the most ruthless enemies. Whenever many millions of insurance dollars are at stake, whether due to organized crime, grand theft, arson, fraud, suspicious disappearances, or murder, Milo is just the man for the job—or even the only man for it.

During World War II, Milo was assigned to the OSS and later the CIA. Now a major in the Army Reserves, he is recalled for special jobs behind the Iron Curtain in several novels. With quick improvisation, unflappable humor, and a stubborn insistence on staying alive, Milo closes each case or mission to return to his favorite things: women, booze, and good food, more or less in that order....

Next up: Steeger had planned to premiere the new Black Mask Library at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention in April—but the show was cancelled. So they are all-new here. The first six books each feature a novel or series character who has rarely or never-before been reprinted, from the pulp that many consider the best detective title ever. Dashiell Hammett and Carroll John Daly are two giants of Black Mask.

We're also bringing in the first book in the new Collected Hard-Boiled Stories of Race Williams, the pulp detective. And lastly, a deluxe hardcover collecting The Complete Tales of the Scientific Club by Ray Cummings, a well known Weird Tales and Astounding author. It sports a killer cover by Virgil Finlay and more cool artwork inside, too.

These will all be here in 3 weeks or so.

Comic Magazine Company, 1936-37

A fascinating article just was posted online about this company. CMC was created by ex-employees of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson's National Allied Publications (later to become DC Comics). And after NAP, the Comics Magazine Company was only the second company to feature all new comic stories...not newspaper reprints.
After 14 short months it morphed first into Temerson, then into the legendary Centaur, home of Amazing Man and The Arrow. Once you finish it, you can explore more in Comic Book Historians, a website with comics articles, creator interviews and more.

I'm out of room--next week I'll list the Eisner Award nominees whose books and comics we offer (we handle every one in the Best Archival Collection category).
