THE WORLD OF DARK CRYSTAL Signed
Signed bookplate! Recommended. By Brian Froud, J.J. Llewellyn. Jim Henson's 1982 film The Dark Crystal introduced the world to the remarkable imagination of concept artist Brian Froud, who designed the film's iconic characters, creatures, and locations. Following the success of the film, Henson and Froud collaborated on this unique book--it showcases the gorgeous conceptual artwork created for the film and delves into the lore that underpins Thra, the magical world at the heart of Henson's story. Oversized, back in print after 15 years, with all the bonus material from the 2003 Collector's Edition. Brian signed some illustrated bookplates for us for the previous edition but we only have a handful left; after they are gone we'll include the unsigned plate with a bonus illustration. THE COMPLETE CHESTER GOULD'S DICK TRACY Volume 28
Dailies & Sundays, 1974-76. Recommended. By Chester Gould. In these latter-day Dick Tracy adventures Chester Gould again proves that he was never one to rest on his laurels. The square-jawed detective fights it out with Lispy and the visually grotesque villain appropriately named The Brain. Stories are replete with murder, suicide, gangland execution, dope smuggling, a deadly natural disaster, and not one but two main characters on the verge of death. The singular motive behind it all? Money, plenty of money. All this and the return of retired Chief Brandon in the penultimate volume of Chester Gould's Dick Tracy. Library of American Comics, 2020...More.

VIENNA PORTRAIT OF A CITY
In the Taschen style, a massive coffee table volume. Recommended. By Christian Brandstätter et al. This enormous volume is a treasure trove of photography from the last 175 years, following the evolution of Vienna from imperial capital to modern metropolis. Like a printed walk through time and cityscape, hundreds of carefully curated pictures trace the developments in Vienna's built environment and the cultural and historical trends they reflect, whether the urban Gesamtkunstwerk of the 19th-century Ringstrasse or the experiments of “Red Vienna” in the 1920s, when the city had a social democrat government for the first time. JACK KIRBY The Epic Life of the King of Comics
I love it! Highly Recommended. By Tom Scioli. Told in Jack Kirby's own words, just as if you'd sat down with him for an afternoon to get his entire life story. But this is a graphic novel, so you also get visuals, including cool retro images of much of his most important work, from his first stories in 1939 to his last in the 1990s. Written and drawn by a groundbreaking Eisner-nominated comics creator. Based on interviews and articles (and fully documented), here are the anecdotes, the humor, the inside story of the comic industry's favorite creator. For that reason, these have never been included with the widely distributed newspaper strip collections. Published through the 1950s and 60s, the Dell Peanuts comic strips were drawn by Charles M. Schulz with a little help from his friends. These truly classic comics will delight any Peanuts fan, collector and newbie alike. kaboom!, 2018...More.

This volume also features Everett's fan-favorite 1950s Sub-Mariner revival during Marvel's "Atlas Era." 2021 Calendars

Here's our first two calendars for next year! Take note, last year's Daniel Merriam was one of our very first ones to sell out—we sold our last copy December 6th. We try to keep titles available through the end of January, but sometimes we can't reorder a popular title.
THE ART OF DANIEL MERRIAM 2021 Calendar
Highly Recommended. Contemporary surrealist Daniel Merriam presents an airy dreamworld of vaguely Victorian characters and architectural wonders. Houses built in trees, oversized old-fashioned bicycles, faces on fish that fly, and cats and dogs that rule a house of their own all co-exist in his world. Merriam's paintings often seem lit from within but incorporate an edgy darkness. Twelve elaborate scenes from Merriam's imagination are reproduced in this calendar.  Last year's calendar was one of our first to sell out, so be aware. Pomegranate, 2020...More.

Item Code: ADM21

Plus Nocturnal Slumber, Morning Awakening, Rose, Summer, Winter, Job, and two wonderful Champagne posters from 1899. Alphonse Mucha's romanticized images of women in diaphanous gowns were wildly popular at the end of the nineteenth century. His advertising posters featured beautiful young women in “Mucha style,” later known as art nouveau. Pomegranate, 2020...More.

News and Notes

The Fantastic Paintings of Frank Frazetta

This finally came in Monday and we are just getting the last of our pre-orders out today. We were supposed to get an additional order on the pallet, but it didn't get done in Los Angeles. So we have NO copies to sell right now; we have to wait for the publisher to ship us more from his stock in Texas. That will take 2-3 weeks. The Deluxe First Edition is limited to 1500, but Vanguard can and probably will do a second edition of both this and the hardcover, in October. Meanwhile, reserve your copy now for our restock—and remember, AFTER JULY 24 coming and out of stock items will have to be charged to your card at the time of your order...until we get software changes made to get back to our present system.

Download Catalog

Vanguard is also shipping us restocks of all the other books he's still got in print, including several other deluxe/extra pages copies of the Frazettas: The Sensuous Frazetta [SENFD. $69.95], and Frazetta Sketchbook 1 and 2 [FRASK01D, 02D. $69.95 ea]. See them all here.

Website and Software Change July 24

Next week we will do this email one day early, and send it to you on Wednesday evening. I encourage you to place any orders by Thursday midnite. We will still be shipping orders out on Friday, but they will not be confirmed until Monday.

Beginning Monday, we will need all customers to give us their charge card information again, just once, for new orders and for any backorders. Our old system has the cards encrypted so that we cannot merge the numbers to our new system. Once we have your card number on the new system, then we'll have the encrypted number for all future orders.

The Fantastic Fiction of Hannes Bok Signed

The trade edition has been available, but the deluxe is just this week shipping to us. Orders have been quite good for both editions. We love the cover and all the Bok art, too.

Author Grant Geissman let the EC Facebook group know about our signed bookplate edition, and we were deluged with orders last week. We are only producing 100 bookplates (signed by Grant, Angelo Torres, and the Gaines family). These are ALMOST but not quite all spoken for. We still have 12 available for reservation as I write this. The book will ship in October.
