INVISIBLE MEN The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books
Our Highest Recommendation. By Ken Quattro. Art by Adolphe Barreaux, A.C. Hollingsworth, Cal Massey, E.C. Stoner, Owen Middleton, Matt Baker, et al. Read the riveting stories of Black artists who drew—mostly covertly behind the scenes—superhero, horror, and romance comics in the early years of the industry. An indepth, highly original look at each of these important illustrators, offering intimate details of their life and work like never done before. This is a gem of a book, put together by the incredibly painstaking researcher who's offering all comic fans new ground to be enjoyed. Yoe Books. 2020....More.

Item Code: INVMEH
Hard Cover, 9x11, 240pg, Partial Color
$34.99 $29.99

This may just be the best book ever from Yoe books. I've barely scratched the surfaced myself and I'm enthralled by just the first two creators covered. This is as much about the earliest days of comics during the Golden Age, as it is about the hard times of being a black artist in a mostly white man's field. I can't recommend this enough.

Here are other Yoe Books from IDW and Clover Press.

GREAT NAVAL BATTLES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
By Jean-Yves Delitte and Giuseppe Baiguera. Highly Recommended. In the history of civilizations, sea power has always played a preponderant role. This collection plunges into the heart of three of the twentieth century's greatest naval battles, told from both the lowliest sailor's viewpoint, as well as from the commanders'. TSUSHIMA. 1905. Newly opened to the world, Japan surprises and confounds the fabled Russian fleet. JUTLAND. 1916: the British Royal Navy and the German Kaiserliche Marine confront one another in the North Sea in the final great marine confrontation of World War I and one of the greatest epic battles in the history of seafaring. MIDWAY. 1942: The age of the aircraft carrier begins. What unfolds is an epic carrier duel, the likes of which the world had never seen. In the end, Japan would never recover... ALSO AVAILABLE
ATLAS AT WAR
My Highest Recommendation. Art by Russ Heath, John Severin, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Syd Shores, Don Heck et al. Edited by Michael J. Vassallo. Fifty hard-hitting stories from Atlas, the company that became Marvel Comics. Each one hand-picked by Vassallo, a comics historian and world-renowned authority on Timely/Atlas. Marvel published more war titles than anyone in the industry, between 1951 and 1960, and were strongly influenced, at their best, by Kurtzman's EC stories. If you think EC and DC were the only publishers doing poignant, powerful and well-drawn war stories, read this and have your head turned around. This is good. Dead Reckoning, 2020....More.

HEART OF DARKNESS
By Joseph Conrad. Adapted by Peter Kuper. Highly Recommended.Heart of Darkness has unsettled generations of readers with its haunting portrait of evil in the depths of Africa, brought there by the white man and his greed. Francis Ford Coppola's "brilliant re-imagining of Heart of Darkness, set during the Vietnam War" gives you a hint of what is in store for you here. The narrator is hired to pilot a ship up an unexplored river, uncovering the rampant ivory trade, slavery, cruelty and tyranny...portrayed here with Kuper's signature woodblock style. Norton, 2019....More.

Based on the 2008 Society of Illustrators' exhibit, "Artists Against the War", this draws from the history of graphic protest and demonstrates the many ways that illustrators — in comics, editorial cartoons, illustrations for magazine articles, and so on — have reflected on the representations and misrepresentations of war, specifically in Iraq and Afghanistan. 56 nationally-known contributors, an all-star list including Grossman, Arisman, Kuper, Sorel, Holland, Billout, Silverman, Tim O'Brien, Banyai et al. PRE-CODE CLASSICS FANTASTIC WORLDS/LOST WORLDS Volume 1
Closeout Price! Collects Lost Worlds #5-6, 1952-53, and Fantastic Worlds #5-7 1952. Highly Recommended. By Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson, John Celardo, Ross Andru et al. Marauding winged men, dishy dolls with back-packs and ray guns, blazing interplanetary rocket ships, and grumpy flora and fauna — this one has it all! Outer space as it should be, courtesy of the greatest comic book writers and artists of the 1950s. Alex Toth does "Alice in Terrorland" and has stories in four of these five issues, plus a cover. A rare treat from Murphy Anderson! The complete run of both titles, since Standard liked to start their new titles with issue #5, and these had short but top-notch life-spans. Comparable to what was being done at EC and in Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space at DC, for both good art AND stories! PS Artbooks, 2017....More.

FORBIDDEN WORLDS Volume 12

Six new issues, more than 20 stories by the fine writer Richard Hughes and a solid stable of artists, including EC's own Al Williamson. The comics code was the best thing to happen to ACG, as it meant better and longer stories, with more characterization, depth and highly original plots. From science fiction to fantasy to the surreal—and that would be the very first appearance of Herbi, drawn by Ogden Whitney in #73. Lots of flying saucers and out of this world stories all still very readable today. PS Artbooks, 2017....More.

Mailing Deadlines for Christmas

December 11 for the East Coast, December 16 for the West Coast. Rush Orders should be in our hands by Friday, December 18. Play it safe and place orders early. Especially for calendars, which are running low now. Neither UPS nor the Post Office make any guarantees this time of year. I just got a Priority Mail 2-day package that took 16 days to reach me. Aughhh. But let's keep our sympathy for those folks working the front lines, including the Post Office and UPS workers. It's not easy right now for anyone, especially them.

Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta

The new printing of the deluxe and hardcover editions was slated for October, but now it looks to be January before we'll see them. Minor corrections will be made.

Christmas Card?

Well gang, we didn't get it together this year. You can probably understand why. Many of you know how much we enjoy putting together a card each year, which we mail to as many people as we can. But this year, what with software changes, a new website, increased online business due to the pandemic (one small silver lining), and our reluctance to bring in new help in the midst of these times…we had to let our traditional card go. We will be emailing everyone something special, so there's that, anyway!
