REED CRANDALL ILLUSTRATOR OF THE COMICS Signed
Signed extra-illustrated full color 7x10 bookplate! Now in softcover. Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. The special bookplate features a painting never before reproduced in full color featuring John Carter, Dejah Thoris & friends, and Tars Tarkas going into battle (nudity). From the 1940s to the ‘70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the “artist's artist” through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features.TwoMorrows, 2021.  ...More.

I'm really thrilled about how nice the bookplate that we did turned out. We printed it oversized, 7x10, the size of a comic on glossy heavy stock. It looks superb. See it above in our banner ad or get a larger image by clicking here, it's one of the additional scans. Note: If you bought the hardcover edition from us, back in 2017, we'd be happy to send you one of these bookplates for your copy. Add it to any regular order (we're not sending it separately, it's already free!). Put it in the Notes field, or ask for it when you call your order in.

THE LINCOLN BRIGADE
Recommended. By Pablo Dura. Art by Carlos Esquembre. This is the story of African American Oliver Law, who with other black American citizens volunteered to go fight in Spain. From France they sneaked across the border, and with little training, fought in the Spanish Civil War against the fascist faction leader, General Francisco Franco. Law would eventually go on to lead the entire fully integrated brigade — a third of which lost their lives against the German and Italian-backed Franco forces. Law also fought and protested for worker rights in the 1930s United States. Caliber, 2021....More.

ROY V HUNT A Retrospective
Recommended. First Fandom Experience presents the work of fan & semi-pro artist Roy Vernon Hunt. Hunt lived and worked in Denver, Colorado from 1914 until his passing in 1986. His first published art appeared in the fanzine The Alchemist in February 1940. He was a founding member of the Colorado Fantasy Society, a group formed to organize the 1941 World Science Fiction Convention in Denver. But he went on to do much more fanzine work, book covers for early small press publishers, and much more. Hunt took his own path, specializing in monsters, Lovecraft and otherwise, sometimes in the style of Lee Coye Brown, and Art Deco-inspired spaceships and sci-fi. He was an excellent designer. Includes his revealing essay on early sci-fi fantasy artists, from 1943. First Fandom Experience, 2021.  ...More.

AMERICAN COMIC BOOK CHRONICLES The 1950s
New Printing. Our Highest Recommendation. With text corrections, even better binding, and enhanced cover durability, if you already own the first printing, you'll love this one even more! Bill Schelly authored the volume on the 1950s era of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, with a year-by-year account of the most significant publications, notable creators, and impactful trends, including: the rise of the great EC "New Trend" titles (Tales of the Crypt, Weird Science), Harvey Kurtzman's Mad, and Carl Barks‘ classic work on Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge! The re-tooling of the Flash in Showcase #4 that kicked off the Silver Age of Comics, and the introduction of DC's Martian Manhunter, Adam Strange and the new Green Lantern! AMERICAN COMIC BOOK CHRONICLES The 1990s
New Printing. By Keith Dallas, Jason Sacks et al. Art by Todd McFarlane. The American Comic Book Chronicles continues its ambitious series of full-color hardcovers, where TwoMorrows' top authors document every decade of comic book history from the 1940s to today! Jason Sacks and Keith Dallas coordinated this volume, covering all the pivotal moments and behind-the-scenes details of the Bill Clinton years! The 1990s was the decade when Marvel Comics sold 8.1 million copies of an issue of the X-Men, saw its superstar creators form their own company, cloned Spider-Man, and went bankrupt. It was when Superman died, Batman had his back broken, and the runaway success of Neil Gaiman's Sandman led to DC Comics' Vertigo line of adult comic books. It was the decade of gimmicky covers, skimpy costumes, and mega-crossovers. TwoMorrows, 2020. ...More.

Kirby at War - Coming in May

THE COMPLETE KIRBY WAR & ROMANCE
1956-65. Highly Recommended. King of the comics art form, Jack Kirby needs no introduction. He was an architect of the Marvel Universe, but his contributions extended far beyond just super heroes. A combat veteran during World War II, Kirby brings hard-earned gritty realism to Atlas's Battleground #14 and Battle Comics #64-70, while Kirby and Stan Lee co-created Sgt. Fury in 1963. Here are #1-8, 10-20 and 25. Plus: 25 vintage and ultra-rare Atlas/Marvel romance titles, 1959-63 — many restored directly from Kirby's original art! Marvel, 2021. Due: May. ...More.

ATLAS AT WAR
My Highest Recommendation. Art by Russ Heath, John Severin, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Syd Shores, Don Heck et al. Edited by Michael J. Vassallo. Fifty hard-hitting stories from Atlas, the company that became Marvel Comics. Each one hand-picked by Vassallo, a comics historian and world-renowned authority on Timely/Atlas. Marvel published more war titles than anyone in the industry, between 1951 and 1960, and were strongly influenced, at their best, by Kurtzman's EC stories. If you think EC and DC were the only publishers doing poignant, powerful and well-drawn war stories, read this and have your head turned around. This is good. Dead Reckoning, 2020....More.

DC GOES TO WAR
Our Highest Recommendation. By Robert Kanigher, Garth Ennis et al. Art by Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, Alex Toth, John Severin, Jack Kirby et al. In this new collection, DC is recognizing nearly 80 years of comic book war stories beginning with the origin of Blackhawk in Military #1, 1941, Boy Commandos by S&K in 1942, on to the beginnings of Sgt. Rock, the origin of Enemy Ace, The Losers, The Unknown Soldier, the very first Haunted Tank, and my favorite piece, a graphic novel length War in Heaven, bringing Enemy Ace into World War II and reluctant combat to defend his German homeland, beautifully told and illustrated by Ennis and Russ Heath. Powerful stuff, first page to last. DC Comics, 2020....More.

BLAZING COMBAT
Our Highest Recommendation. By Archie Goodwin, Frank Frazetta, Wally Wood, Alex Toth et al. These stories are among the best comics stories about war ever published. Written and edited by Hall of Famer Archie Goodwin, and drawn by fellow comic book Hall of Famers Frank Frazetta, Wallace Wood, John Severin, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Gene Colan. Building on the tradition of Harvey Kurtzman's much-lauded EC titles, Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat, Goodwin's stories offer striking personal insights into the minds and emotions of individual soldiers and civilians. Covering wars from ancient times through Vietnam, Blazing Combat, unlike much of the popular media of the time, underscored the very madness of war itself in starkly personal terms. FABLES COMPENDIUM TWO
Collects Fables #42-81 and Peter & Max: A Fables Novel. Recommended. By Bill Willingham et al. Fables Compendium Two starts with the story "Arabian Nights (and Days)", when foreigners start showing up in Fabletown—much to the dismay of longtime residents—plunging Fabletown into a culture clash of dire proportions! Prince Charming is in over his head and must call on the help of a Fable character not seen in these pages for far too long...and this is one wish he can't take back. This collection takes on a life of its own, ending with the story "The Dark Ages"—taking place post-war—but if the Fables knew the consequences, they might not have gone to war at all. COMICS OF CRUMB Underground in the Art Museum Hardcover
The Comics of R. Crumb: Underground in the Art Museum is a groundbreaking collection on the work of a pioneer of underground comix and a fixture of comics culture. Ranging from art history and literary studies, to environmental studies and religious history, the essays included in this volume cast Crumb's work as formally sophisticated and complex in its representations of gender, sexuality, race, politics, and history, while also charting Crumb's role in underground comix and the ways in which his work has circulated in the art museum. University of Mississippi Press, 2021. Due: May. ...More.

Item Code: COMCRH
Hard Cover, 262pg, b&w
$99.00
We realize $99 is quite expensive for a hardcover edition. As far as we know, there are no bonus features. We assumes it's priced this way due to a very small edition size. This will also be available as a softcover edition [COMCR. $30]. Here's all the latest on Crumb.

Lives of the Great Occultists by Kevin Jackson and Hunt Emerson

I really enjoyed this, I read every single bio (and there are a lot of them). Allow yourself several evenings to make your way through this, it's highly detailed and dense with jokes and spoofs. Hunt Emerson could have easily worked for Mad back in the EC days, his work is wonderful and funny. there's a lot of inside jokes here, too. -Bud

The History of EC Comics

This is very close to being out of print—the publisher has less than 200 copies left of the original printing of 5000. Generally Taschen does not reprint these XXL volumes; more likely, we'll see a dramatically smaller-sized volume in 2022 or 2023. Meanwhile, we still have a good supply AND you can still get the color, extra-illustrated bookplate (pictured right), drawn by Angelo Torres and signed by the author, Grant Geissman. Our Highest Recommendation.
