SUPERGIRL SILVER AGE Omnibus Volume 1 -- Action Comics #252-307, 1959-63. Highly Recommended. By Otto Binder, Leo Dorfman and Jerry Siegel. Art by Jim Mooney and Al Plastino. I find these vintage stories charming and fun to read. This was back when Superman was still keeping Supergirl a secret--she had to hide her very existence from the world while also doing super-heroic deeds, much like Superboy did in the early seasons of Smallville. Superman creator Jerry Siegel worked on these, along with the talented Otto Binder and they are quintessential Silver Age stories, fun, innocent, each one complete in itself. These are all backup stories from the back pages of Action Comics....More.

Mature Readers

SIN-A-RAMA is a new expanded edition that looks at the art, and just a little of the stories, of the sleazy paperbacks of the 1950s and 1960s. It talks about the creators, both authors and artists, who include moonlighting science fiction writers like Robert Silverberg, who contributes a special article. It’s another side of Weird Love, this time not comics but paperbacks, dealing with lesbians, cults, threesomes, straying wives and husbands, hookers, and so on. First published in 2005 and again in 2008 (I imagine a second printing). It has sold out twice now and both editions did well for us while they remained available.

Also this week we have two new Peekarama double feature DVDs:

PHYSICAL ATTRACTION & CLASSICAL ROMANCE, from 1984, by Richard Mailer. a “prolific and talented,” though perpetually obscure, director who helmed nearly 100 films over his career.

HARLOT & TIJUANA BLUE DVD, two films by boundary-breaking director Howard Ziehm, whose big hit was Mona.

Prince Valiant 1938-39 American Epic Set

This will soon be gone--Volume 3 has become unavailable from the publisher. We have just ten sale-priced sets left [PVSCP. $300, your price $89.95]. This comprises Volumes 2 (1938) and 3 (1939). And we have three slightly damaged copies of Volume 3 that we’ll use for three last sets. These have been relisted in the latest catalog, so if you’ve been considering these, now is the time to jump on them. They’ve done VERY well for us at this extraordinary price. After the sets are gone, we will still have Volume 2 (1938) at $49.95. Volume 1 sold out many years ago.

The Last Dragon by Jane Yolen and Rebecca Guay

I rather liked this, it was a fun read. It’s an all-ages novel of a young woman (the “black sheep” of the family) who uses her head to try and save her island from a dragon, the last of its kind, which is steadily decimating the population, both people and animals. There was an age of dragons long ago, but the last had supposedly died off. But an errant egg was waiting, buried deep in the earth. This is the story of that last lone dragon, who you also might have some sympathy for!

A search goes out for a hero, but just for a man, of course. But meanwhile it’s our young lady who’s doing the thinking and she’s going to be the make-or-break pivot in this story. Delightfully drawn in a painted format by Rebecca Guay, a frequent Spectrum  contributor. And it’s her cover on Spectrum 21! Jane Yolen is a highly respected fantasy, science fiction and children’s author of an amazing 280 books. She’s won the Nebula and World Fantasy awards amidst many more nominations. [LDRA. $12.99]

ADVANCED SEARCH

We are continuing to tweak the new website a bit here and there. Please do try the ADVANCED SEARCH feature, which we’ve moved now to the top of the home page, below the general search. It’s an excellent, fast way to narrow down your browsing to just what you are looking for. I’m finding it very handy as I myself learn to use the site.

RELATED ITEM RECOMMENDATIONS

We are also just starting to add “Related” items to the latest arrivals. It’ll take some real time to do this for the older items, but beginning with this week’s new items, above, we’re adding similar items you might want to know about. This is now my job, and I rather enjoy it. For instance, here we can always let you know of a hardcover or deluxe version of a softcover, or visa versa.

I can also suggest similar items you might have missed. After you click on any item, to get the full description and additional scans, scroll to the bottom of that page, so see the full range of related items. For instance, take a look at these two new arrivals: Kitaro [KITB]—you’ll see two RELATED ITEMS just below the item description, and five more at the bottom of the page. Here’s another one you can try: Walt Kelly’s Fables and Funnies [WKFFH]. Remember you can still find items fastest in the general search by using the item code, as long as it’s more than three letters or numbers.

REVIEWS

Don’t forget, I would love to see YOUR review—or even just a comment—about any item that you deem worthy. After clicking on the item, then click on REVIEWS, which falls just below MORE VIEWS in the same NAV bar as FULL DESCRIPTION and INFORMATION boxes.

My personal reviews are found in News & Notes, posted to the product pages, and posted to my Facebook page.
