REED CRANDALL ILLUSTRATOR OF THE COMICS
Our Highest Recommendation. By Roger Hill. From the 1940s to the ‘70s, Reed Crandall brought a unique and masterful style to American comic art. Using an illustrator's approach on everything he touched, Crandall gained a reputation as the “artist's artist” through his skillful interpretations of Golden Age super-heroes Doll Man, The Ray, Firebrand, and Blackhawk (his signature character); horror and sci-fi for the legendary EC Comics line; Warren Publishing's Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat; THUNDER Agents and Edgar Rice Burroughs characters; and even Flash Gordon for King Features. RED RANGE A Wild Western Adventure
By Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Glanzman. Afterword by Stephen R. Bissette. "Joe R. Lansdale's certainly a modern legend himself, having been around for some time now. But comics artist Sam Glanzman's got an even more legendary historical grounding, having been professionally drawing for six decades or so. These two worthies have collaborated on Lansdale's graphic novel, RED RANGE. The first page of RED RANGE itself begins full tilt with graphic ultraviolence as Lansdale and Glanzman plunge us into a 19th century Klan lynching of a black Texas family. Abruptly in the midst of the atrocity, the Kluxers are interrupted by a mysterious rider who's a deadly shot with both his pistols and long-range Sharps buffalo rifle. It's the feared and hated (by the KKK, at least) Red Mask, a tough, lethal, black man who wisely keeps his identity concealed. Writer Lansdale's unerring ear for exotic period and regional dialog remains constant. His penchant for grim humor appears throughout. His hardcore, hard-nosed sense of social conscience remains intact." --Locus Drew Ford, 2017...More.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF FRITZ THE CAT
Highly Recommended. By Robert Crumb. Fritz is a freewheeling feline chiseler who allowed Crumb to express some of his most acidic commentary on American culture. Tragicomedy, farce, and satire all rolled into one, this chronicles the very best of Fritz's adventures from his early days as an idealistic college student to his ultimate fate as a jaded, burned-out superstar, including Crumb's infamous send-off of the character in the wake of Ralph Bakshi's animated feature film, an experience and project that completely dissatisfied Crumb. Finally collected in a single volume, these essential Fritz stories are a funny, insightful, authentic record of a tumultuous period in American life, crafted with humor and compassion. THEY DREW AS THEY PLEASED The Hidden Art of Disney's Late Golden Age Volume 3 The 1940's Part 2
The 1940's Part Two. By Didier Ghez. Foreword by Andreas Deja. Walt Disney always envisioned the studios that bear his name remaining relevant by consistently taking creative risks and doing the unexpected. Heading into the 1940s, he crafted an entirely new division of the studio called the Character Model Department, which focused solely on the details of character development. This latest volume from famed Disney historian Didier Ghez profiles six remarkable artists from that department, sharing uncommon and never-before-seen images of their influential work behind the scenes. With vivid descriptions and passages from the artists' journals, this visually rich collection offers a rare view of the Disney artists whose work gave rise to many classic Disney characters, and who ultimately rewrote the future of character creation in animation. Reed Crandall: Illustrator of the Comics

When Roger Hill was still working on this book, he asked if I’d send him a scan of my Reed Crandall painting. For lack of a better title I call it John Carter of Mars. I bought this from Jerry Weist way back at the first Oklahoma City show I attended, in 1970. He had published it in his fanzine Squa Tront—I think in #3.

Jerry had two Crandalls, in fact, for sale. The other was a finished full color work of John Carter fighting a giant green Martian. The one I bought was an unfinished water color featuring John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas and other warriors running into battle out of a palace, being attacked by Black Pirates of Barsoom. The story goes that Reed was doing it as a gift for his friend Al Williamson, but never finished it.

My good friend John Barrett, who was also there in Oklahoma City, bought the other piece. John was in our crew that drove from San Jose, our home then, to OKC, and on to the New York Comic Art Con the following week, where we first met Phil Seuling. John had already been my partner in our first two stores, Seven Sons (1968) and Comic World (1969). Two years later we came up with the idea to start Comics and Comix. Since I never took it out of the frame and scanned it for Roger, I thought I’d post it here as a bit of an extra that mighta/coulda been in Roger’s fine book…which I have been eagerly reading as I recover from the San Diego Comic-Con.

During the show I posted quite a number of pictures and bits of news on our Facebook page. I hope you will visit it and check them out. I’ll draft up a fuller report next week. For now, I’ll just say the show went very well for us, in our new smaller space and our new location, and we don’t regret downsizing one bit. We split our sales almost 50/50 between new books from Comic Art, and out of print material of Anne’s and mine, including old comics and pulps. And I found lots and lots of nice old comics for myself. Not as many as I would like, but we still found a number of new sketchbooks and new books to offer to you, which we began listing above and will continue over the next week or two.

~Bud
