Welcome to our once-a-year Bestsellers. This is taking the place of our usual New Items email this week. New arrivals are on our home page and will be listed as usual next week. Below we list the top 60 Bestsellers, by units, for the past year. I’ve only listed a couple sold-out titles, but several more are noted at the very end of this list. Publishers have gotten more careful on their print runs and we are sometimes quite surprised to have a popular seller suddenly become unavailable, for your sake as well as for ours. I find the items on the Bestsellers list generally are the favorites not just of customers but also of mine. I may nudge them a little by promoting them better, with banner ads and more passionate descriptions and recommendations. But on the other hand, some items I’m very passionate about don’t sell at all—I could mention some wonderful graphic novels, including several from France, among these "neglected" items. Viva la difference! |

2. THE FANTASTIC WORLDS OF FRANK FRAZETTA Limited First Edition, 6000 individually numbered copies. Available from us but now out of print. Our Highest Recommendation. Introduction by Dan Nadel. This monograph is the biggest and most complete ever produced on the artist, done in collaboration with the Frazetta family and with top collectors. Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed lord of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the 10 years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records, he's long overdue for this ultimate monograph. This has a LOT of material never before seen or rarely seen. Many nudes that Frank just did for himself are here; early work from his youth and early days in comics, Li'l Abner and Thunda pages, early comic book covers — all from his original art. There are also later advertising works never before collected, early paperback covers now show from the paintings. There's also a good bibliography of many of the works originally published as paperback, magazine and book covers. Taschen, 2023. Out of Print. Rush Service and International shipping would require an additional charge....More. Item Code: FANWFH Hard Cover, 12x16, 472pg, Partial Color $200.00 |
It's amazing for a high-ticket item like this to come in #2 when we are calculating bestellers by number sold! Frank remains the most popular fantasy artist, hands down. And Taschen sure knows how to make an ultimate art book on whatever subject they choose. |
3. RICHARD CORBEN'S TALES FROM THE PLAGUE Limited to 500 copies. Highly Recommended. By Dennis Cunningham. Art by Richard Corben. This is a special edition of Horror from the Crypt of Fear which collects Richard Corben's very first graphic novel done for an obscure fanzine, Weirdom Illustrated, in 1969. Corben was 28 years old and still working at Calvin Productions when he began working on "The Plague" in 1968. Dennis Cunningham was one of the first publishers to use Corben's art in the comic book industry. Bill Leach, 2023....More. Item Code: RCTALE Soft Cover, 5x8, 46pg, b&w $9.95 |
Besides the publisher himself, who's an incredible EC fan, we are the exclusive distributor for this and three other issues of Horror from the Crypt of Fear. Limited to 500 copies. Wonderful very early Corben! |
4. THE ART OF ARTHUR ADAMS The first 75 copies sold will include a 8x11 b&w signed plate. Our Highest Recommendation. The most comprehensive retrospective ever compiled on this celebrated creator. A hand-picked selection of his art spans forty years and highlights a variety of comic-book covers and interior pages from each phase of his career. The pieces showcased here are from major and independent publishers as well as creator-owned projects. Examples cover a chronological display dating from his first samples, while trying to break into the business, to Arthur’s latest cover drawings. Each image is accompanied by personal anecdotes that enhance the visuals. Flesk, 2023....More. Item Code: ARTAA Soft Cover, 9x12, 180pg, b&w $40.00 |
The hardcover has just now sold out, but we still have plenty of this softcover edition although we will run out of signed bonus plates before very long. |

And much more by lesser-known and unknowns. Underwood Books, 2010. Out of print. Mature Readers. ...More. Item Code: SHAAH Hard Cover, 10x12, 112pg, Full Color $15.00 |

Arnie has not been able to stay on schedule, but that's okay when every issue is a gem. Both #2 and #3 came out in 2022. This is still available with a signed bookplate but it's out of print and we just bought Arnie's last 40 copies. #1 is long sold out. |

8. ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #84 Our Highest Recommendation. This issue features the work of the legendary N.C. Wyeth, known for his iconic illustrations for the books Treasure Island, Robin Hood, Robinson Crusoe, and so many more. Many images are reproduced from the original paintings. Featured next is the work of Ward Brackett, the Cooper Studios artist best known for his slick magazine illustrations. Book reviews, exhibitions and events, and more round out the issue. Illustrated Press, 2023. ...More. Item Code: IL84 Magazine, 8x11, 80pg, Partial Color $15.00 |
I'm not listing the other issues that made the bestsellers list, but with NC Wyeth, this was the top one. Dan Zimmer published his final four issues all at once and they've all done very well. He'll continue to do art books but the long run of this is finished. We do our best to keep picking up out of print back issues as they are always sought after. See Rare Books. |

It’s been almost 30 years since Bernie Wrightson let his imagination run wild on his two trading card series. Bernie was given free rein to explore whatever ideas he wanted. Over a two-year period, he created 150 amazing NEW paintings. Vivid images of swamp creatures, vampires, werewolves, and beasties — Bernie's favorite monsters! I hope they do a new printing of this, it's a wonderful book. |
12. FRAZETTA BOOK COVER ART The Definitive Reference Deluxe Deluxe Slipcase with wrap-around art and 16 bonus pages. Our Highest Recommendation. By J. David Spurlock. This new book is devoted solely to the artist's single, most beloved venue, Book Cover Art. By focusing on this specific area, the book boasts room enough to feature every single one of Frazetta's famous and highly collectable covers, beautifully and authentically reproduced at a larger size on a page to itself. All, paperbacks from girlie publishers, Ace Burroughs covers, Conans, and far far more, are presented in chronological order, which gives readers a unique ability to follow Frazetta's evolution as an artist. Commentary and rare quotes from the artist himself. Vanguard, 2022. ...More. Item Code: FRAZBCD Hard Cover, 8x11, 184pg, Full Color $69.95 |
There's also a hardcover but still no plans for a softcover edition. Vanguard has announced the next Frazetta collection. |
13. SOLD OUT ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY #40 Our Highest Recommendation. Cover feature on the much deserving underground arist Rick Griffin, plus features on Vaughn Bodé and his son Mark Bodé. First up, the psychedelic artwork and posters of Rick Griffin, master cartoonist and designer, best known for his Zap Comix work but who has much more to offer. Vaughn Bodé and his wacky, irreverent and sexy cartoons with a garrulous wizard, voluptuous girls and belligerent lizards. And lastly Bodé’s son, Mark, shares his views on his work and the series he took over from his father. Minor nudity. Book Palace Books, 2023. Out of print. Mature Readers. Item Code: IQ40 Soft Cover, 9x11, 96pg, Partial Color $27.99 |
This issue featured Rick Griffin and Vaughn Bode. We used Rick's wonderful Zap Comix cover for one of our catalog covers. This takes us full circle, since my business began in 1970 by selling fanzines and underground comix, Zap in particular. Book Palace does not usually reprint regular issues, only the specials. I'm expecting the latest issue featuring Richard Corben will sell out also. |
14. ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY SPECIAL #16 The Modesty Blaise Artists Our Highest Recommendation. First Printing of 1,000. An impressively thick, 160-page look at all the artists who have depicted Modesty Blaise in the comic strips, comic books, hardcover and paperback covers, magazine appearances, even privately commissioned artwork. 16. CAVE PAINTINGS The Art of Budd Root Limited, 2000. Recommended. By Budd Root. Introduction by Frank Cho. "I'm a huge Budd Root fan from day one and I always wanted a nice hardcover Budd Root art book for a long time. After years of waiting, I decided to put my publisher hat on and just publish it myself." -Frank Cho. And is this a hot book! Page after page of dazzling art, not only wonderful nudes (and almost nudes) of Cavewoman, but specialty pieces, commissions, Universal monsters, convention book covers and posters, and an interview. Monkey Boy, 2016. Mature Readers....More. Item Code: CAVPH Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x12, 128pg, Full Color $30.00 |
This was published in 2016 for Pete's sake! Frank Cho actually published it for Budd, and as a busy artist I don't think he's made a point of keeping it available through other outlets. So it just keeps selling regularly for us, along with Budd's latest Cavewoman issues. |
17. TITILLATING TALES OF DOLLY Recommended. After being long out of print, SQP Art Books brings a newly revised collection of Blas Gallego's oh-so-naughty-but-super-nice Dolly! To quote another impossibly buxom heroine - she's not bad, she's just drawn that way! Europe's answer to "Little Annie Fanny" doesn't need to speak English — her body language speaks glorious volumes of pure desire! One page vignettes, double-page "Orgies Throughout History" series, even more serious eye-opening nudes for your general amusement. If there's anyone who could emulate Playboy's Annie Fanny, Blas is that artist. SQP Artbooks 2023. Adult Material....More. Item Code: TITTA Soft Cover, 8x11, 48pg, Full Color $14.95 |
Publisher Sal Quartuccio (SQP) started out doing superlative early fanzines like Phase One, the NY Comic Art convention program books, and hundreds of adult-themed art books. We'd thought he'd retired, but he's back with new titles in 2023! |
18. THE ART OF PERRY PETERSON Almost Gone! Limited to 1000. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. This spectacular book explores the life and work of Perry Peterson (1908-58), in his day one of the nation's top slick magazine illustrators. Today he is largely forgotten, except for fans of vintage magazine illustration. His excellent work appeared in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Collier's, almost exclusively illustrating fiction. His pretty girls, handsome men, and dramatic scenes show that nothing was beyond his skill. His tragic death in a fire in 1958 cut short a promising career. Illustrated Press, 2023. Out of print....More. Item Code: ARTPPH Hard Cover, 9x12, 224pg, Full Color $44.95 |
From the publisher of Illustration Magazine. An artist I'd never heard of, but that didn't keep this from selling well. Here's Dan Zimmer's other books that are still available. All are always limited printings. |
19. BLACKHAWK Volume 4 Collects #21-24, all from 1949. Highly Recommended. Art by Reed Crandall, Bill Ward et al. Bad girls (and even several good girls) abound in this new collection, highlighted by superb covers and usually two stories in each issue, all by amazing Reed Crandall. Within three years he'd be a lead artist at EC on their horror books. The team also fights flying jet-pack men, alien invaders in a rare sci-fi story, tin-pot dictators, the gorgeous bad girl Satana. And they switch in these issues from their old prop planes to jets. Bill Ward does several Blackhawk adventures too, as well as Chop Chop backup stories. PS Artbooks, 2022....More. Item Code: BLAC04 Soft Cover, 7x10, 208pg, Full Color $32.99 |
Several other volumes of Blackhawk made this list but I'm only including this one as the best of the batch. Thanks to Reed Crandall's artwork and frankly, fun team stories, this has been one of the very best PS Artbooks series. |

A definitive look into his artwork, not only in comics but as a cover artist as well. Then it's back to those fabulous painted covers of Dell Comics in the 1950s and 60s: a gallery section featuring some of the greatest covers George Wilson did for Gold Key and Dell. Joe Jusko also shares his thoughts on George Wilson. Includes covers for the Classics Illustrated Time Machine, Magnus Robot Fighter, Turok, Tarzan, Doc Solar, Boris Karloff, Space Family Robinson, Twilight Zone, Ripley — all from the original paintings. Book Palace, 2023....More. Item Code: IQ42 Soft Cover, 9x11, 96pg, Partial Color $27.99 |
Here's the latest issue, mentioned above, already selling very briskly even though it came very late in 2023. |
22. NAUGHTY AND NICE The Good Girl Art of Bruce Timm Publisher Edition Almost Gone! New Edition. Special exclusive Publisher's Hardcover edition, 1500. Highly Recommended. Naughty and Nice presents an extensive survey of Bruce Timm’s celebrated "after hours" private works. ALTER EGO #181 Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Roy Thomas. It's a special Neal Adams issue, paying tribute to one of the giants of the Silver and Bronze Ages. Three in-depth interviews with Neal including one by Howard Chaykin. Also: a "lost" Adams Brave & The Bold cover with Batman and Green Arrow, and unseen Adams art and artifacts. Plus Fawcett Collectors of America also pays homage to Neal and Michael T. Gilbert presents his latest cover recreations, and more! TwoMorrows, 2023. Out of print. Item Code: AE181 Magazine, 8x11, 80pg, Partial Color $10.95 |
We keep plenty of back issues of Alter Ego available, but every so often a specially appealing one sells out. This was the Neal Adams issue, after he passed, which explains its above average appeal. |
24. THE CHILLINGLY Weird Art of Matt Fox Our Highest Recommendation. Matt Fox (1906-1988) first gained notoriety for his bizarre cover paintings on the pulp magazine Weird Tales from 1943 to 1951. His created ghouls, demons, and grotesqueries of all types, evoking a disquieting horror vibe that no one since has ever matched. He went on into comics and his 1950s cover illustrations, his lone story for Chilling Tales, put them at the top of all pre-code horror comic enthusiasts' want lists. He brought his evocative storytelling skills (and an almost Basil Wolverton-esque ink line) to Atlas/Marvel horror comics of the 1950s and ‘60s as an inker, too! But since Fox never gave an interview, this unique creator remained largely unheralded until now! TwoMorrows. 2023. ...More. Item Code: CHILMHS Hard Cover, 8x11, 128pg, Full Color $29.95 |
The last book Roger put together before he passed away last year (see our tribute on our website home page). He was nearly done with a book on Johnny Craig and also another issue of Squa Tront—his good friend and fellow EC fan Grant Geissman will see both these projects to publication. |
25. THE DYNAMITE ART OF JAY ANACLETO Our Highest Recommendation. At last, a full-blown look at the stunning artwork of this creator. For over a quarter century, Jay Anacleto has taken pencil to some of the most iconic and sophisticated covers to grace the comics industry. For Dynamite, Anacleto has tackled virtually every character in the company's library: Vampirella, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris. His renditions of nearly naked women (and the occasional nude) is second to none. Curated by the artist. Dynamite, 2021. Mature Readers....More. Item Code: DYNJAH Hard Cover, 9x12, 200pg, Full Color |
Jay is one of our very favorite comics cover artists. His 2018 sketchbook is still very popular. |
26. THE PEN AND INK DRAWINGS OF TONY DITERLIZZI Signed Signed! Highly Recommended! Since his meteoric debut as an illustrator for Dungeons & Dragons to a decades-long career as a bestselling author and illustrator of children's books, Tony DiTerlizzi has continued to sketch his favorite fantasy subjects. Wizards, gnomes, and all manner of monsters fill over 100 pages spanning thirty years from Tony's early art samples for TSR (then publishers of Dungeons & Dragons) to dozens of fantastic New Yorker covers, to pieces rendered over a live stream during the recent pandemic. 2023. ...More. Item Code: PENTS Soft Cover, 8x11, 128pg, b&w $30.00 |

This oversize volume presents the first full-color time-travel adventures of V.T. Hamlin’s intrepid caveman Alley Oop. Every Sunday Page from April 1939 through December 1941, meticulously restored from the original newspaper publications and never before reprinted! Acoustic Learning, 2022....More. Item Code: ALLE03H Hard Cover, 12x16, 144pg, Full Color $75.00 |

34. AFTER HOURS MAGAZINE Facsimile Edition #1 The very first James Warren publication, meant as a Playboy style arts & entertainment with no lack of topless ladies! 38. ART OF BROCAL REMOHI CONQUEST Recommended. One of the most popular European artists of his generation, Brocal Remohi spent much of his illustrious career showcasing the sword, sorcery, and general mayhem of barbarians! The blood, the savagery, and often nude slave girls who seem to always get in the way — it's all a glorious gallery of delightful destruction! 39. MINIATURE MARVELS The Book Cover Art of James E McConnell 352 pages of full color reproductions! Our Highest Recommendation. By Steve Chibnall. James E McConnell was one of the last century’s finest and most prolific commercial artists working in publishing. In a career spanning from the 1930s to the 1970s, McConnell produced hundreds of superb paintings for hardback dust jackets and paperback covers (as well as magazines such as Look and Learn, and advertising posters), working for noted British publishers large and small. Amongst his most celebrated works were covers for Sax Rohmer’s Fu Manchu; John D. Macdonald and James M. Cain thrillers; Berkeley Gray and Vernon Warren crime novels; children’s adventure novels; Edgar Wallace mysteries; and over a dozen Pinnacle paperbacks of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan, Mars and Venus novels. 40. ORIGINS The Art of John Jude Palencar Deluxe Closeout Price! Publisher file copy. Signed & dated 2006 by Palencar, limited to 300 numbered copies. Highly Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner. Foreword by Christopher Paolini. John Jude Palencar is a rarity among modern artists, mixing meticulous technique reminiscent of the old masters with a soaring, darkly surreal imagination. There are touches of Bosch and Da Vinci in his visual allegories of netherworld landscapes and doomed characters. His painted book covers and illustrations for works by Stephen King, Lovecraft, Tolkien, and many others have won him wide acclaim. But he is perhaps best known for his covers to the fantasy novels of Christopher Paolini, including the iconic dragon cover for the bestselling novel Eldest. Underwood Books, 2007. Out of print....More. Item Code: ORIGJJD Hard Cover, 9x12, 128pgs, Partial Color |

41. THE JOHN SEVERIN WESTERNS Featuring American Eagle Collects Prize Comics Western #85-113. 1951-55. Our Highest Recommendation. From 1951 to 1955, before and during his legendary EC work, John Severin, Mad artist Will Elder and Two-Fisted Tales writer Colin Dawkins introduced a new level of historical accuracy to the comic-book Western. While Native Americans had generally been vilified or left in the shadows of gun-slinging cowboy heroes, the American Eagle stories featured in Prize Comics Western were built around action-packed tribal intrigues and a heroic Crow warrior. And they are GREAT! Well written and superbly drawn!!! Fantagraphics, 2023....More. Item Code: JOHWH Hard Cover, 7x11, 488pg, Full Color |
I think this deserves to be much higher up in the list.but it's collecting "western" comic book stories, which is not everyone's cup of tea no matter how well drawn and well written. A perfect companion to Roger Hill's John Severin: Two-Fisted Comic Book Artist. |

48. MASTERPIECES OF FANTASY ART 40th Anniversary Edition $200 edition now smaller size but at a bargain price. Highly Recommended. By Dian Hanson. Fantasy art, that colorful blend of myth, muscle and sexy maidens that took off in 1923 with the launch of Weird Tales magazine, was reinvigorated in the 1960s with The Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian paperbacks with Frank Frazetta covers, and the late ‘60s emergence of fantasy psychedelia. It went big in the ‘70s with the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, the brilliant French magazine Métal Hurlant, and the first Star Wars film. The number of active artists peaked in that decade, but a new generation of fans discovered the genre through fantasy trading card games in the ‘90s, leading to a massive interest in the art form today. Taschen, 2023....More. Item Code: MASFAH Hard Cover, 6x9, 512pg, Full Color $30.00 |
This $200 XXL volume has larger pages but all 512 pages are here for $30. It's a bargain. |
49. IMAGES #13 Closeout Price! . Our Highest Recommendation. Edited by Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. "A handsomely-selected tasteful mix of the best, well mounted, printed. It has my vote for its long life." That's how Alex Toth described the first issue. Here's Jim: "I scour original source material—magazines and books—from before 1923 for the most beautiful and forgotten images by famous and forgotten illustrators. Using the best technology available today on museum quality stock...I try to give century-old art the benefit of modern reproduction technology and display these artists as they have never been seen before." 52. BOMB Highly Recommended. Art by Nick Bertozzi.A riveting graphic novel adaptation of the award-winning nonfiction book Bomb “ the fascinating and frightening true story of the creation of the Atom Bomb. With excellent detail, this tracks the story from the beginning. In 1938, a German chemist split a uranium atom and launched a scientific race that spanned three continents. The race was on, with the top U.S. scientists, aided by refugee scientists from conquered nations, working to figure out the bomb’s secrets first. If the Germans had been first, the allies might have easily lost the war, as bombing Japan changed everything in 1945. Roaring Book Press, 2023....More. Item Code: BOMBG Soft Cover, 6x8, 256pg, Full Color $17.99 |
A non-fiction graphic novel about the making of the first atomic bomb. |

Jose Salinas made Cisco probably the best drawn western ever. We are lucky these are being collected. |
54. BLACK MAGIC Volume 1 Collects #1-4, 1950-51. Highly Recommended. Simon & Kirby created this outstanding pre-code horror series. And they drew the covers and multiple stories for each issue, the first five thick 52-pagers. This is Kirby at his best, honing his skills 9 years before he and Stan began their monster run in the Marvels. These stories are more supernatural, nightmare visions, magic, witches...character driven and still very readable! Additional artists, all working in the S&K studio, are Mort Meskin, Leonard Starr and George Roussos, three solidly good artists and storytellers. PS Artbooks, 2023....More. Item Code: BLAM01 Soft Cover, 7x10, 212pg, Full Color $34.99 |
Simon and Kirby doing pre-code horror. And the stories are fun also, not too over the top. Before Stan Lee, this was the dynamic duo. |

This issue went back to print and it should remain a bestseller. |
57. THE MARVEL FAMILY #4 Facsimile Edition 1946. Recommended. By Otto Binder et al. Art by Pete Costanza, C.C. Beck et al. One of the best issues, with three witches going after the entire Marvel family. Then each charcter is featured in an individual adventure: CM, Jr. in "Knife of Jade," Mary in "Don Quixote Rides Again," and Capt. Marvel in a cool story, "Sivana's Vampire". One lone Zenescope title makes the list, their swimsuit specials are the most popular of all their titles for us. |
Sold out! Ok, I will admit I fudge the list slightly. I didn’t think a bestsellers list with a whole bunch of sold out items would be as interesting as one filled with titles you can still order. I only left a couple sold out items in above. Here are the items that went out of print which would have made the top 60 list above: EC Fan-Addict #5 with a signed bookplate - Fantagraphics took this title over from Roger Hill but they only printed 950 copies; we got caught short. It was our #2 bestseller! The next issue #6 is finished and will be printed soon. Roger passed away but co-editor Grant Geissman is arranging another signed bookplate for it. Issue #2 also hit the list but Roger sent us his very last copies before he passed away last year, so it’s gone. There is a chance Fantagraphics might do a BEST OF EC FAN-ADDICT… Infected by Art #10 - we still have a few copies of a variant cover but the regular edition is gone. We have several of the previous annuals still available. With the annual Spectrum Fantastic Art on hiatus, Infected has become the primary collection of the best in fantasy art. JUST IN! Volume 11 just arrived! Full details next week! Since many calendars are gone, I didn’t include any in the list. But as usual, several of the adult titles made the list, including Olivia (sold out), Mystique (Mystique Exposed and Naked Girls are still available) and Boris and Julie, also still available [BVJB24. $15.99]. Omar Rayyan’s signed calendar made the list and remains available, but will be gone soon [AOR24. $25]. Click here to see all remaining calendars available. Mark Schultz Carbon 5 was another sell out in hardcover, and only six copies of the softcover remain. A new edition of The Art of Haddon Sundblom (the Santa Claus illustrator from the 1940s) again sold out. I also didn’t want to take up space with supplies, but it’s worth mentioning that Paperback Plastic Bags remains our top-selling supply, followed by Magazine Bags and 10” Bro-Dart Book Jacket covers. Several of the last Illustration Magazines have sold out, but many also remain available. As mentioned above, several of the most recent would have made the list but I chose only to list the best of the issues. Several of VT Hamlin Alley Oops nearly made the list, these continue to do very well. I’m always pleased at that, since I have been a big fan since the sixties. One of the very first pieces of original art I bought was a daily Alley Oop strip, way back in 1970 and ‘71, and I still own it. Buddy Saunders (MyComicShop) generously gave me—free— a wonderful Dave Graue daily with a flying Pterosaur in it, that I was ogling at OAF-Con a couple years ago. |
