The stunning exhibit catalog from 2010 is back in stock. Our Highest Recommendation. I cannot say enough about this wonderful collection. From the same people that put together the book Big John Buscema and Ditko Unleashed, Woodwork is also based on the largest exhibit ever assembled of the artist's work, in Spain. Collectors all over the world were asked to contribute rare original art, so that this is a magnum opus not only of Wood's entire career, but also told as much as possible using the actual original art he created. IDW added a top quality translation of the biographical and tribute pieces, and fine-tuned the artwork and layout and reproduced EVERYTHING in full color. Don't miss this. IDW, 2017...More.

SUPERMAN THE GOLDEN AGE DAILIES 1944-1947
Highly Recommended. By Alvin Schwartz. Art by Wayne Boring. This comprehensive series remedies a gap in comics history, bringing back all the Superman daily strips--among the character's rarest collectibles. The creative torch is passed to writer Alvin Schwartz and artist Wayne Boring, done while Siegel and Shuster were still responsible for the strip and were running their Studio--prior to leaving DC in 1948. Wayne Boring would became THE Superman comics artist circa 1948-60, until Curt Swan came along. Sixteen complete storylines that begin while World War II is still raging and continue into the post-war era. IDW, 2018...More.

THE COMPLETE CHESTER GOULD'S DICK TRACY Volume 24
Dailies & Sundays, 1967-69. Intro by Max Allan Collins Recommended. By Chester Gould. Chester Gould's morality play enters the late '60s, as the cartoonist tackles concepts of retribution, constitutional rights, economic warfare, and Space Age intrigue--all amidst the usual array of murder and violence. The stakes, however, seem higher, and the body count soars: death in space, on the high seas, behind closed doors--by gun, by laser, by asphyxiation, by explosion, and by freezing. The action moves from Earth to the lunar surface as Moon Maid zaps bad guys, Lizz goes undercover, Tracy nearly loses his head--and, when Diet Smith sets up a factory on the moon, will mankind also export greed and murder to its crime-free orbiting satellite? BUD PLANT VINTAGE 1998 PIN-UP Calendar
Almost Gone! by Earl Moran. Yes indeed, we published this ourselves for 1998 and sold it at a nominal price as a fun premium. The actual year date on this is 1953, which was the "mirror year" for 1998, as explained in the cover sheet. Brown & Bigelow is perhaps the most famous name in pin-up calendars, and they were still taking orders for advertising work at this point, so we picked a fun Earl Moran image and added our name and information and logo...just like businesses did it back in the day. Metal top & bottom clamps, art deco border. Brown & Bigelow, 1996. Out of Print....More.

Speaking of vintage stuff of ours, we just sorted out all our old catalogs and I think keeping five sets is plenty. So we have extra copies dating from around 1982 to 2011. We're trying to figure out what to do with them, offer then as a bonus freebie perhaps? I'm open to suggestions, so please email info@budsartbooks.com if there is any interest in these from you folks. They can be as big as 240 pages, so they do cost us a little to ship them even with an order.

News and Notes

Song of Opar

I just wrote to the author of this new novel to tell him that of all the new Tarzan and ERB-related books we are handling, his has gotten off to one of the fastest starts. Maybe it's the sexy cover by Joe Jusko, or the fact it's about the legendary and beautiful La, frequent femme fatale in the Tarzan novels. In any case, the author has agreed to keep signing our copies (it's only available in softcover) and we have a new shipment that should be here as you read this. We whipped through our initial order.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs 100-Year Chronology – price changes

The trade edition ships to us this week. We are honoring all $219 advance orders, as we always do, but the publisher has raised the price to $250 and he is not sure how many will be left. The Deluxe Leather edition at $299 is going up to $400, IF, and that's a big IF, he has any copies at all left when all is said and done. It sounds like they may be gone. We got enough extra sets that we will honor all orders at $299 until the end of June, or until we run out. After than our price will be $400 on any sets left. This deluxe edition ships out a week or so after the trade, so we should have it by the end of June.

Avengers of the Moon Review

I just finished reading this and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope we are treated to a sequel. Steele updates our 1940s hero for today's age, with a new origin story and plausible new technology (a specialty of his). For me it was a page-turning story, with interesting and sympathetic characters and love interest--a lady interplanetary cop, who starts out wanting nothing to do with our strange team. We have a one-of-a-kind intelligent cyborg, like a brother to Captain Future; a classic clunky robot but one who can now think for himself, and does so perhaps too often; and then there's The Brain, a former scientist who died. His brain lives on in a sort of flying roomba contraption. He can talk to our hero by telepathy. Loved it! -Bud

If my glowing endorsement isn't sufficient, check out these two big name pros: "Allen Steele makes you young again in Avengers of the Moon. A Rollicking 'golden age' sci-fi good time." -David Brin, Hugo-award winning author of The Postman

"Ed Hamilton, Allen, and Captain Future. All favorites of mine and, I believe, of a lot more readers ready to discover what made Planet Stories a monthly treat." -Gregory Benford, Author of Timescape.

Author Allen Steele worked as a freelance journalist before becoming a prolific science fiction writer. He has garnered multiple Hugo Awards for his novellas and novelettes, and his novel Orbital Decay won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. In 2013, he received the Robert A. Heinlein Award in recognition of his fiction promoting space exploration.
