Comic Book & Comic Strip Archives

Highly Recommended. By Dan Barry, Mac Raboy and Harry Harrison. Following the death of Mac Raboy in 1968, Dan Barry took over production of the Sunday Flash Gordon strip. This collection, the first ever, features the first three years of a run that would last for nearly five, from The Return of Chameleon, 1/14/68, to Radiation Giants, 12/26/71. Barry took over the dailies in the 1950s and those are often works of art, beginning with strips that collaborated with Frank Frazetta and Harvey Kurtzman in the early 1950s. These Sundays are equally fine. Interview with Bob Fujitani, who was Barry's assistant from 1969-1980, and a fabled Golden Age and Silver Age artist in his own right. Titan, 2017...More.

Now you've made her mad. The Secret Diary of Bettie Page, Chapter Three. EGON SCHIELE His Life and Death
By Xavier Coste. The story of the artistic genius who provoked early 20th-century tolerance--an evocative depiction based on the life of the Austro-Hungarian artist whose short career spanned the turn of the 20th century. Schiele (1890-1918) was a painter known for full-frontal portraits of naked women. They were stark and disturbing. He painted his subjects in gaunt, twisted and unnatural poses. Their voyeuristic tone and blatant eroticism outraged society, landing him briefly in prison. Nevertheless, his works would have a strong influence on the development of expressionist art. Firefly, 2017. Mature Readers...More.

ROBERT CAPA A Graphic Biography
Recommended. By Florent Silloray. A brilliant portrayal of the career of the great war photographer who, at the time of his death in 1954, had only one wish: to be an unemployed war photographer. By the start of World War II, Capa was in New York freelancing for LIFETime, and other publications. He went abroad with the US Army to record Allied involvement in WWII, including D-Day on Omaha Beach. Disembarking from a landing boat, he took the only images of the invasion. He went on to cover the war in Leipzig, Nuremberg, Berlin, London and Paris. Even now, it is the D-Day images that marked him as the world's greatest war photographer. Firefly, 2017...More.

CORTO MALTESE Volume 6 Fable of Venice
Recommended. By Hugo Pratt. In this affectionate tribute to his home town, Hugo Pratt offers a complex mystery thriller involving Freemasons, occultists, and esotericists set during the rise of Fascism in 1921. Corto Maltese's return to Venice is ostensibly a search for an emerald known as the Clavicle of Solomon, but could it also open the hidden doors of magic and unravel the nature of time and space in this city of secrets? Or is it merely “the stuff that dreams are made of,” as was the black bird of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon? IDW, 2017...More.

The Dynamic Duo finally fight side by side with England's dashing spy partners, John Steed and Emma Peel, from the world of the cult-classic British television show The Avengers. How-To & Reference

Recommended. By Dave Gibbons and Tim Pilcher. Insider hints, tips, and tricks from one of the legendary creators, Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Green Lantern). Learn about script writing, page layouts, cover design, and more, including samples of "Early Influences," original comic pages from the '50s to the '70s. Special offer! This week you can get a free Frazetta Promotional Brochure, below, free with ANY order for ANY Frazetta book. That’s not just the titles below, but any one from our website, including the popular sale book Telling Stories: The Comic Art of Frank Frazetta [TELSH. $49.95, your price $24.95]. While supplies last, of course.
Recommended. When Underwood Books produced Icon, the first of three books they devoted to Frank Frazetta, they pulled out all the stops. To promote the book to retailers, they produced this 12-page, 9x12, full color glossy brochure, complete with testimonials from fellow artists, book sample pages, and full page paintings. This was pre-publication, done prior to the book itself. It notes the book will be published in October, 1998, with a first printing of 30,000 copies. ...More.

Comes with bonus second dust jacket! Highly Recommended. Edited by Cathy and Arnie Fenner. Frank Frazetta's paintings and illustrations have set the standard for fantasy artists for the past 50 years. His art continues to exert a tremendous influence over collectors of classic comic and sci-fi art, who pay record-setting auction prices for his original works. This lushly produced, large-format retrospective follows Frazetta's career from his apprenticeships at various publishers in the 1940s, to his 1950s breakthrough with the "Buck Rogers" and "Lil' Abner" series, to his powerfully erotic compositions for the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and the famous "Conan" illustrations for Robert E. Howard. Underwood Books, 1998. Out of Print....More.

Hard Cover, 9x12, 164pg, Full Color

The actual dust jacket art for this is almost the same as on the brochure, although there are some interesting tweaks. But we have pictured here the art for the deluxe edition dust jacket, included as a bonus with all copies of the hardcover. We have only five copies of the hardcover, and nine of the softcover.

We also have one very slightly dinged hardcover [RB277. $120]. And there is just one copy left of the Deluxe Limited Edition [FFID. $450.00]. The other two have sold.

See all the Underwood Publisher File Copies and Sale Books, including Frazetta's Testament and Legacy, on our website. And also the eight Sale Books listed last week and the week before in this email.

We also have copies of the fantastic Spectrum series, but didn't have them ready in time for this email. Keep checking back for more additions.

2018 Calendars

Recommended. World renowned artist Greg Hildebrandt, best known for his Lord of the Rings Calendars done with his brother, has created over 75 original pin-up paintings as part of his American Beauties series. Now an annual event, like the also all-new Boris and Julie calendar, here are entirely new images both fun and sexy. This combines vintage pinup glamour with iconic American themes, gorgeous color, pop culture images, and photo-realistic ladies with lots of skin on display. Calendar observes major holidays. Here are two Conan Lancer covers, Bran Mak Morn, John Carter and Dejah Thoris, Jongor, even some great early Creepy and Eerie covers. Recommended. Spanish artist Luis Royo is one of the most popular and prolific fantasy illustrators in the world today. With a career spanning four decades, his sensual paintings of women in apocalyptic landscapes and fantasy worlds have captivated fans of science fiction and erotica both. SURREALSCAPES The Fantasy Art of Jacek Yerka 2018 Calendar
Highly Recommended. This surreal artist was the subject of art books in 1994 and 2006 (with a major introduction by Harlan Ellison) from Morpheus, the U.S. publisher for H.R. Giger. Polish born artist Jacek Yerka has created a style completely his own, combining a unique European perspective and imagination with traditional Flemish techniques. His mind-bending, dreamlike landscapes seem both realistic and surreal, in the tradition of Escher. They can be disturbing and attractive, fanciful or just downright bizarre. Sellers, 2017...More.

DC Comics Calendars

JUSTICE LEAGUE 2018 Calendar
16-Month calendar. Recommended. Behind a slick painted cover with four of our heroes, you will find all seven of the super squad: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. Slick image style, very highly detailed scenes from each hero's adventures. There's a lot of fine detail to take in every month, including four very nice group shots with several members, while each other month has a solo character. Very contemporary look, but unfortunately no art credits. J. Scott Campbell style. Trends Intn'l, 2017...More.

BATMAN 2018 Calendar
16-Month calendar. Recommended. Batman, his women, and his enemies each get a month. Starkly painted in near monochromatic shades but with the occasional pop of color, these are unique and very striking. Batgirl, Catwoman, Harley, The Joker, Two-Face, the Penguin and others are all here, one featured each month in large size, spread across both calendar pages in centerfold style, along with a large grid ideal for notes. Each image looks more like a sculpture than a painting! Trends Intn'l, 2017...More.

WONDER WOMAN (MOVIE) 2018 Calendar
16-Month calendar. Recommended. Before she was Wonder Woman, Diana (Gal Gadot) was princess of the Amazons. When a pilot (Chris Pine) crash-lands on her island, she decides to fight alongside him in the war to end all wars in the Wonder Woman movie. See Wonder Woman discover her true destiny here, as each month takes you from her coming of age when Steve first appeaers on the island, through coming into the conflict of World War I and embracing her newly discovered power. Great portraits of Gadot in her various guises. We like it. Trends, 2017...More.

News and Notes

Prince Valiant Studio Edition – Coming in, finally

It shipped to us on Sept 26, so we expect to be shipping them out by the end of the first week in October. The price was actually lowered—how about that—from $200 to $175, and it looks, oh so good. We have lots of backorders for this long-in-the-works project, but we are bringing in lots of extras, so don’t be shy if you haven’t ordered it yet.
Canadian Whites - Heroes of the Home Front

Last chance, the Kickstarter campaign for this fine book on Bell Features Publishing will end Wednesday October 4th at 9am EST. On our Facebook page, it was mentioned the price of the book could be prohibitive for some. I want to point out that you can support the project with as little as $2, and for $16, you can get a PDF of the entire book, ready in February!

Now, I’d love to have you buy a copy from us (regular is $75, deluxe/limited is $100, and unlike Kickstarter, you don’t have to pay us until the book ships). But--the important thing is to make this project fly. Even I have gotten into the habit of reading the latest Alter Ego issue, and dealer catalogs, as a PDF file. I have to say it’s not a bad way to go. Here’s a link to author Ivan Kocmarek’s latest post on Comic Book Daily, which I found heartfelt and passionate. He speaks to the heart of what we care most about in the world of comic books: not just the comics themselves, but for creators who give so much to create comics for us.

PAPERBACKS FROM HELL The Twisted History of 70s and 80s Horror Fiction

Read shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary s Baby. It's an affectionate, nostalgic, and unflinchingly funny celebration of the horror fiction boom of two iconic decades, complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles. SHAMELESS ART 20th Century Genre and the Artists that Defined It
Closeout Price! Recommended. Edited by Tim Underwood. Unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated, genre art from the first half of the 20th century reflected the subconscious urges of an economically deprived and sexually depressed generation. This collects work by masters like Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, Rolf Armstrong, George Petty, Enoch Bolles and many others as they let their untamed imaginations and tortured libidos run wild. 1934-35. Limited, 50. By Kent Thorn. Art by A. Leslie Ross, Don Hewitt. Introduction by Will Murray. Meet the five Mavericks—Lance Clayton, Doc Grimson, Charlie Parr, Lockjaw Johnson, and Flint Maddox. They were wanted men, those five hard-riding travelers of the still night trails. Mavericks all, they had entered outlawry for five different reasons, drawn irresistibly down the Owlhoot Trail from five different walks of rangeland life. They became one living inseparable unit of grim, uncompromising justice, united as one man by their friendship, their burning championship of the underdog—and the high, white flame of their courage. 2018 Calendars

Highly Recommended. A handsome, oversized calendar with twelve delicate line drawings by Jennie Harbour, an underappreciated artist from the Golden Age of illustration. This was published as a labor of love by a dedicated fan who produces occasional special projects like this. Probably not more than 200 copies will be produced in all, and not readily available from other sources. Harbour was a very skilled artist in her time, doing several fine children's books, but today she is known only to the most dedicated fans of the period. Calligraphics, 2017...More.

Item Code: FFT18
Wirebound, 18x12, 12pg, Two Color

This special calendar--which is oversized and quite limited--came into our hands by odd circumstance. At the last Sacramento Book show, I was talking to one of the dealers and a gentleman came by and gave her a copy. We all talked about how obscure the artist was, I greatly admired what he had put together, and one thing led to another. Turns out this is a special project this long-time collector likes to put together, not for financial reward but just to have something cool for friends and the local bookstore or two. So unless you frequent Moe's books in Berkeley, this might be your one and only opportunity to snag this, as much a fine display of Harbour's artwork as it is a calendar. I like it.

Recommended. 1890 to 1925 was the Golden Age of Illustration. The finest artists were producing the best in children's and illustrated books, in England and in the U.S. Artists such as Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac designed the most fantastical, beautiful drawings to enhance stories that still enchant to this day. Here is a sampling of that fine work, a wide variety month by month. Catch, 2017...More.

Closeout Price! Recommended. Art by Gil Elvgren, Earl Moran, Al Buell, Edward d'Ancona et al. This gift book--available in three striking cover options shipped to customers at random--offers flirtatious and fun 1940s and 50s illustrations. Irresistible pinup ladies bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. From sun-kissed beauties at the beach to ski bunnies hitting the slopes, bedside nurses ready to take your temperature to scantily clad runaways, rakish shipmates to not-so-conscientious secretaries, these smiling cuties are ready for fun. PIN-UPS 2018 Calendar
Highly Recommended. Instead of paintings by Elvgren and Petty, here are REAL ladies from the same time, the 1940s to the 1950s.  Just like they were posing for Vargas and others, they are smiling, voluptuous, sultry, and in period settings, with classic hair styles and, occasionally, nylons or lingerie. Mostly they are just fine looking sexy ladies from a lost era of more innocent cheesecake, proud of their appeal. We like this. Catch, 2017...More.

Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds is pretty darned cool, with full pages devoted to each and every girl from Marilyn Monroe to the latest. I grew up in the sixties, snagging these from my dad's bottom drawer, and it's certainly fun to see who I recognize.

Adult Movie Posters of the 60's and 70's takes a look at the emergence of x-rated movies from underground sleaze to films that couples went to together and television show hosts talked about, like Behind the Green Door, O, Emannuelle, and of course, the one that started all the talk, Deep Throat.

Artist Barbara Jenson's Bare It All signed edition sold out from us some time ago. But we just got six more copies, then it's gone for good. I think this is her first signed edition. It's also available in a regular edition [BARIT. $14.95].

We have three new calendars this week: Lingerie Provocative, Derrieres, and Naked, for 2018. Three images from each is on our website.

Holiday Bud Plant Catalog

Our latest catalog is the one we consider our Christmas edition. I know it seems very early,  but ordering from this will allow plenty of time to get those Christmas presents dialed in, particularly if you are overseas. Our last catalog of the year comes out in December, which is too late for foreign customers, and risky for anyone in the U.S., considering shipping takes longer and we just might be out of something special.

The catalog should be in your hands--if you are a regular customer--by October 10th or 15th. See the cover below--we've adapted it from Reynold Brown's new book, using his movie poster for Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Special features include my recommended Christmas gift ideas, Underwood Books Publisher File Copies, and all of the 2018 Calendars.

Heroes of the Home Front: Bell Features Artists of World War II

This Kickstarter program needs your support! We are fully supporting this upcoming book--I have already committed to 20 copies of the deluxe limited edition, of which there will be just 150, and the regular hardcover. But we'll only have these if the Kickstarter program is successful.
So I'm changing hats from being a retailer, who would like to sell you a copy of this--to altruistic collector, who wants to make sure this gets produced. I have supported every single project so far devoted to collecting and publicizing the WECA (War Economy Conservation Act) comics, also known as the Canadian Whites. These all-original comics were published between 1941 and 1947, the years in which the Canadian government cut off import of any and all U.S. Comics.

Unique characters like Nelvana, Queen of the Northern Lights, were created...and she pre-dates Wonder Woman! Brok Windsor is one of the best drawn titles of the time. Plus Captain Canuck, the Polka Dot Pirate, and Wow Comics #1. All these are on our website.

The author of this new book, Ivan Kocmarek, wrote an extensive and excellent overview of the period that was published in the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide 44 (2014-2015). If you have this, go check it out. Also, in the Overstreet Market Report for the last several years, dealers are noting the quickly escalating prices of these rare comics. About 800 issues were published--they are very comparable to the first few years of our own Golden Age, with heroes and heroines of all flavors, albeit in black and white instead of full color. Only in 1946 did a limited number of full color comics come along.

Read more about it, watch Ivan's video, and consider investing directly in the project, since there are several cool premiums. I signed up for one myself, the original issue of Grand Slam Comics. This just might need your support to come to fruition.

The Kickstarter program is here:

In case you'd like to order this direct from us rather than from Kickstarter, we've put in bare-bones descriptions of both editions onto our website and here is the link. The regular edition will be $75, the deluxe signed edition, limited to 150 copies, will be $100. For the deluxe edition, this is our pre-pub price--it may go up upon publication if we still have copies.

We will list these with more complete details later on. As always, your credit card will not be billed until we make our shipment to you. Publication date is February 2018.
