THE ART OF SAUL TEPPER
Limited, 900. Highly Recommended. By Daniel Zimmer. Saul Tepper (1899-1987) was a life member of the Society of Illustrators and was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1980. His work is most closely compared to that of Dean Cornwell, and he worked for all the same popular, nationally selling magazines as Cornwell. He eventually did an almost equal proportion of fiction and advertising assignments, for both magazines and for many national accounts, such as Mobil Oil, Texaco, Packard, General Motors and Coca-Cola. This is the first-ever collection of his work. Tepper began his career working with Albert Dorne, studied under Harvey Dunn and, like Dunn, went on to teach after a long and successful career. NEIL GAIMAN PIRATE STEW
Recommended. By Neil Gaiman. Art by Chris Riddell. A brand-new, oversized picture book for all ages. Long John has a whole crew of wild pirates in tow, and — for one boy and his sister — he's about to transform a perfectly ordinary evening into a riotous adventure beneath a pirate moon. It's time to make some Pirate Stew. Marvelously silly and gloriously entertaining, this is a tale of flying ships, doughnut feasts and some rather magical stew. With a deliciously rhyming text from master storyteller Neil Gaiman and bold, double-page full color illustrations by the supremely talented Chris Riddell. Quill Tree Books, 2020....More.

THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY
By David F. Walker. Art by Marcus Kwame Anderson. A serious, fact-packed look the origins and life of the Black Panther Party, founded in Oakland, Calif in 1966. It was a radical political organization that stood in defiant contrast to the mainstream, non-violent, non-armed civil rights movement. This gripping illustrated history explores the impact and significance of the Panthers, from their social, educational, and healthcare programs that were designed to uplift the Black community, their attempt to curb police brutality through citizen patrols, and finally, to their violent clashes with the FBI, which targeted the Party from its outset. THE POSSESSED
Highly Recommended. By Steve Niles. Art by Gyula Nemeth. Horror master Steve Niles pairs up with his Criminal Macabre artist, Gyula Nemeth, on this poignant and terrifying tale of a Jewish grandfather driven to rage and vengeance he's willing to die for. In Nazi-occupied Budapest, a very young girl sees her mother and father brutally murdered by an SS Officer. She escapes with her Grandfather. Filled with rage and hatred, the Grandfather asks a Rabbi of questionable character for help. The Collected Toppi

THE COLLECTED TOPPI Volume 4 The Cradle of Life
Our Highest Recommendation. By Sergio Toppi. This fourth volume contains five tales set in Africa, India, and Australia, presented in English for the first time: The Kokombo Dossier, Bwuma, My Son, Warramunga 1856, M'Felewzi, and Pacific Island, first published in 1976, '85,'91,'97 and 2011. The stories are intriguing and poignant, looking at indigenous tribes and peoples, and yet offering us tales of adventure, violence, greed and retribution from more primitive times. Most of these adventures are either somewhat timeless, or take place in the 19th or very early 20th century, with unique characters in abundance. Minor nudity. Magnetic Press Inc, 2020....More.

Interspersed through the bio are pieces of several of his most famous stories, as he daydreams or writes them up and we see related art with Cthulhu, mythical Arkham and The Necronomicon, his "alter ego," Randolph Carter, Charles Dexter Ward, etc. HPL liked hanging out in graveyards at night, and always seemed to return to his beloved Providence. PHOOLAN DEVI REBEL QUEEN Hurt
French graphic novel. Highly Recommended. By Claire Fauvel. A fascinating new graphic novel, translated from the French, and an absolutely true story. She rebelled against the ancient tribal rules (read: women are the property of their husbands) of India. At the age of 11 she became wife for a much older man. She ran away when he raped her. From that point on, there were few choices for her, but there was her ambition and thirst for revenge. She was saved from death by a handsome young bandit, which was her entry into becoming the Robin Hood of India—albeit, a bit more blood-thirsty. NBM, 2020. Condition: Slightly bumped corners. He is the ultimate spy and de facto enforcer reining in the intelligence community's illegal excesses. But he's been framed by an international criminal cabal and is now on the run from the very government he's sworn to protect. Hmm, sure sounds like Jason Bourne!! THE MARVEL ART OF THE BROTHERS HILDEBRANDT with Cards
Exclusive bonus: ten Hildebrandt trading cards! Highly Recommended. In 1994, n 1994, Greg and Tim began an amazing relationship with Marvel Comics, producing the incredible Marvel Masterpieces trading card set, featuring Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Panther, X-Men, Fantastic Four and so many others! That entire set is reproduced here, with model photos and preliminary drawings, plus the complete X-Men 2099 painted graphic novel that they illustrated! And more Marvel work, a second card set and posters...with insightful commentary, amusing anecdotes, and candid reminiscences by Greg Hildebrandt (Tim passed away in 2006, at the age of 67). Limited Printing Fine Art Illustrated Editions

THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK An Agony in Eight Fits
Limited to 126 hand-numbered copies, printed on specialty Italian art paper. Highly Recommended. By Lewis Carroll. Art byÁngel Domínguez. A beautifully illustrated new adaption of the famous poem by the author of Alice in Wonderland. Full color, full-page and double-page illustrations throughout. Typically categorised as a nonsense poem, this was written from 1874 to 1876 and borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem "Jabberwocky" in his children's novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). It follows a crew of ten hunting the Snark, which may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. Inky Parrot Press, 2020. Out of print. ...More.

Item Code: HUNTSN
Soft Cover, 6x10, Text/Full Color

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND By Willy Pogany
Hand-Numbered from 126 copies, printed on specialty Italian paper. Highly Recommended. By Lewis Carroll. Reprints, in slightly larger size, the scarce 1929 edition. Artist Willy Pogany had a long and fruitful career, illustrating children's and adventure books, working in Hollywood, and teaching art. This wonderful new edition collects one of his scarcest and most desirable books. Nearly every page is illustrated, and the entire book is printed in two colors. Pogany's visualization of Alice is delightful, as you can see just from the cover. His creatures are wonderful, and one or two images from this have often been collected in Alice histories. Inky Parrot Press, 2020....More.

Item Code: ALICADH

THE WORKS OF HAYAO MIYAZAKI The Master of Japanese Animation

BERSERK Written in Darkness
By Quentin Boeton. Berserk is a manga series which stands out for its rich, twisted and dark universe. It is a clever alchemy between the stories of Elric of Melnibone, Hieronymus Bosch's paintings and Gustave Dore's engravings. This book reviews Berserk's story and all aspects of Kentaro Miura's life, the manga's author. It also deciphers the work's entire dark fantasy world. This series, now more than 30 years in creation, "is not just a story of adventure, it is an artistic, philosophical, symbolic work that is an ode to the dark side of human nature..." Third Editions, 2021....More.

SCENE OF THE CRIME
Highly Recommended. Back in print and first-ever trade paperback: a lost crime noir masterpiece. This was the first time Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark worked together before their acclaimed runs on Daredevil and Gotham Central. A hard-hitting mystery set in a modern-day Chinatown that garnered nominations for Best Miniseries and Best Writer in the 2000 Eisner Awards. Also: behind-the-scenes art, a bonus prequel story, a new foreword Brian Michael Bendis, new Afterword by Brubaker, and other extras. Image Comics, 2021....More.

LUNATIC
Recommended. By Dan Mazur. Lunatic is an unusual and striking graphic novel in the tradition of wordless books by the likes of Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward. The word "lunatic" derives from Latin, meaning "of the moon" or "moonstruck," and in this sense it describes the protagonist of this story: from infancy she develops a magical, almost intimate relationship with the moon itself and it acts as her friend, lover, and mentor. She is a dreamer, an outsider, and she's going to get herself to the moon!! Part fable, part classic adventure in the tradition of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Fanfare, 2021....More.

Item Code: LUNAT
Hard Cover, 7x9, 200pg, b&w
$20.00
For more wordless novels, see White Collar (on sale at $12.95), The Thousand Demon Tree by Jeffrey Alan Love ($24.95) and Si Lewen's Parade: An Artistic Odyssey (also on sale at half price, $19.99).

LEGENDS OF TODAY
Recommended. This brings together the first three graphic novels Enki Bilal created with the scriptwriter Pierre Christin: The Cruise of Forgotten (1975), The Stone Vessel (1976) and The City That Did Not Exist (1977). Focusing on an enigmatic character with supernatural powers, which serves as a theme for the trilogy, the three stories delve into a village of the Landes, a Breton fishing port, and a small working-class town in the North as they fight to survive this supernatural menace. Titan Comics, 2020....More.

Item Code: LEGETH
Hard Cover, 10x13, 176pg, Full Color
$39.99 $34.99

ALSO AVAILABLE
MONSTER By Enki Bilal
Highly Recommended. The Monster tetralogy is influential creator Enki Bilal's most personal work, a dystopian science fiction epic that reminds us of Philip K. Dick's Bladerunner and Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. A radical organization seeks to eliminate science and truth from the world, and concurrently aliens may have contacted us but it's being covered up. The story follows Amir, astrophysicist Leyla and Nike, a man who has a perfect memory back to day 1 of his life. They are being manipulated by organizations who consider them expendable. Outstanding artwork reminiscent of Moebius and The Fifth Element. Titan, 2019. Mature Readers....More.

Mature Readers

Finally, a full selection of new adult items. First up is Frank Thorne's Complete Ghita of Alizarr. Preorders have already been strong on this. Click here for more erotic work by Thorne, including Lann.

Faithless II is here, continuing the interesting graphic novel series. It's a darkly erotic series with the devil making an appearance, at least with a surrogate. Volume 1 is also in stock. Paul Pope has done variant covers for both.

Phil Hale's new art book has a fair amount of erotic content, so we've put it here. It's called Use Music to Kill, and it's a mix of art, photography and more. Also by Phil Hale, we have Double Memory, published by Donald Grant in 1992, “Art and Collaborations” with Rick Berry. [RB1521. Very Fine $40], and another copy, signed by Rick Berry, [RB1522. $75]. This is Very Fine minus (few light creases on upper tips of cover). We have just one copy of each.
Last up, we have two new 42nd Street Forever collections, #41 and #42. See all previous volumes here. On sale are #27, 29 and 32, at $24.95, $14.95 each, while they last.

Search Engine Improvements

You can now do an accurate phrase search--just put the phrase in quotes, like you do on Google. If you don't use quotes, the "Relevance" filter will probably find what you want, but not always. And then it'll include every other use of each of the two or three words. Using quotes nails it right down to what you really want.

Also you can search for real words with two or three letters. Previously the engine did not recognize short words like this. Such as this phrase, "pen and ink" – I often use that to describe fine-line illustrators of the past, such as Roy Krenkel, T.S. Sullivant, and artists collected in Images Magazine, such as Heinrich Kley.

Personally, I'm thrilled. Often I've had difficulty filtering similar items under the old search engine; this is a big improvement.

Best Wishes

Wow, a good part of the U.S. is being hit hard by weather this week. We hope that you are not part of that but if you are, we hope you are safe and warm and have your power back on by the time you read this. As if Covid wasn't enough, not to mention the events of January 6. Be safe out there, and get your vaccine shot! Anne and I just got our first vaccine shot of Moderna—we had to drive an hour to Truckee, up into snow country and over the pass towards Reno...there's still no doses for over age 65 here in town. But at least we got it!. And no side effects at all, knock on wood! Hurray!!
