Roy Krenkel

Our Highest Recommendation. By AndrewSteven Damsits, Barry Klugerman. Roy G. Krenkel was one of the most renowned fantasy artists of the 20th century. His far-reaching influence on--and work with--artists like Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Michael Wm. Kaluta and Jeffrey Jones, to name but a few, was immeasurable and cannot be overstated. Krenkel illustrated numerous works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard and others. But many of Krenkel's works--what he called his "Doodles," as well as full-blown paintings and illustrations--often were unpublished and never seen by even his biggest fans. IDW, 2019...More.

Standard Edition. Our Highest Recommendation. Four volumes present an illustrative history of all Burroughs' publications in the United States (and some from the U.K.). Written and compiled by Michael Tierney, the narrative gives the history of Burroughs' work and the often legendary artists who visualized it, featuring untold stories, art that hasn't been seen since its release, and pieces that were buried in the vaults from the beginning of his publishing history to the present day. Pulps, books, paintings, prints,'s all here. Chenault & Gray, 2018...More.

Featuring the work of George Gross, best known for his pulp covers for Fiction House titles like Jungle and Detective Book, spectacular men's adventure magazine and paperback book cover illustrations of the 50s and 60s. Also featured is the work of Bruce Baumgartner, known for his complete mastery of vibrant watercolor in his slick magazine illustrations of the '40s and '50s. Both written by David Saunders. Krazy Kat

KRAZY & IGNATZ 1916-1918
Geroge Herriman Library. Oversized. Highly Recommended. By George Herriman. For nearly 30 years, George Herriman's hilarious, poetic masterpiece graced the Sunday pages of America's newspapers. Featuring the love triangle of “kat,” “mice,” and “pupp,” each of Herriman's pages is a work of transcendent art, crackling with verbal wit and graphic brilliance, considered by many as the best comics strip ever created. This new hardcover collects all the full-sized Sunday pages from 1916 through 1918; the inventive language, haunting vistas, and beguiling brick throwing that makes this strip so special. GEORGE HERRIMAN The Complete Krazy Kat in Color 1935-1944
Highly Recommended. By George Herriman. A huge coffee table book, collecting the complete pages of George Herriman's Krazy Kat 1935–44, just a little smaller than the original published Sunday page size. One of the first comics to be considered a work of art, Krazy Kat delights with its detailed characterization and visual-verbal creativity alongside the slapstick shenanigans of Krazy and Ignatz the mouse. This reprint comes with a 100-page illustrated introduction by Alexander Braun in a special carrying-case/box. Taschen, 2019...More.

Craig Yoe's passion for the subject and attention to detail result in a highly enjoyable book--a work of art unto itself, here collecting some impossibly rare art by Herriman, much of it having never been printed before anywhere. This isn't just original artwork for Krazy Kat strips. It has page after page of one-of-a-kind, beautifully hand-colored pieces that Herriman did for friends, including birthday cards, framed artworks, and illustrated thank-you's. Eighteen complete Sunday Adventures. Highly Recommended. By Jerry Siegel, Otto Binder, Edmond Hamilton et al. Art by Wayne Boring. Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel returned to DC and became writer, once again, of the newspaper comic strip along with DC's other top writers. In these eighteen classic adventures from October 18, 1959 to January 20, 1963, the Man of Steel meets "The Kryptonite Girl" and his "Mermaid Sweetheart." Also featured are Superman's "Greatest Feats," "The Super Powers of Perry White," "The Invasion of the Super-Ants," and "The Creature of 1,000 Disguises," among other early '60s tales drawn by Wayne Boring. And "Superman Joins the Army," a theme DC refused to touch on during World War II. Find out why, here. IDW, 2018...More.

Dark and malicious magic by two scheming goddesses has driven Wonder Woman and Conan together, stripping Diana of her memories and chaining her destiny to this dark-haired and dangerous stranger. From an Eisner-nominated author, an unusual story of two strangers find themselves inextricably tied together by inexplicable superpowers. Fighting their connection could mean destroying the world. MATTÉO Book Two 1917-1918
From the creator of The Reprieve & Flight of the Raven. Recommended. By Jean-Pierre Gibrat. In this tour-de-force from award winning writer/artist Jean-Pierre Gibrat, the honor and glory sought in the Great War (seen in Book One of this series) have become mutilated and blurred memories. The October Revolution in Russia creates hope in the hearts of the oppressed and draws in Mattéo, the son of a Spanish anarchist. He sees his beloved Juliet for a brief but memorable moment, and the next day, with his father's friend Gervasio, Mattéo departs for Petrograd with camera in hand. But he may very well become victim of the disputes and differences between the various factions leading the Russian revolution. IDW, 2019...More.

Each page opens to the original b&w art on left, finished color art on right. Highly Recommended. By Dennis O'Neil. Art by Jerry Ordway. Beautifully adapted by two comics legends, this appeared when home video was still in its infancy and became the "rewatchable" version of the Academy-Award winning movie. For many, it opened the door to a whole new world of sequential storytelling. This celebrated retelling of hugely important, ground-breaking film is for the first time in a dedicated hardcover volume. It features the complete original artwork, using high-quality scans of Ordway's original, never-before-seen, black-and-white artwork, side-by-side with each finished full color page. Wonderful reproduction, dozens of previously unseen "lost" full color McCay pages from 1937, plus wonderful "Dino" strips direct from proofs. Breathtakingly designed, each page is overflowing with amazing imagery--most rarely seen or never seen before. Very, very cool. Fantagraphics, 2015. Out of Print....More.

PALEOART Visions of The Prehistoric Past 1830-1980
Highly Recommended. By Zoë Lescaze. Preface by Walton Ford. In this unprecedented (and enormous), new book, writer Zoë Lescaze and artist Walton Ford present the astonishing history of paleoart from 1830 to 1990, including eight fold-out pages. These are modern visions of prehistory: stunning paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, mosaics, and murals that mingle scientific fact with unbridled fantasy. Here is an in-depth look at this neglected niche of art history, also revealing how artists projected their own aesthetic, rendering the primordial past with dashes of Romanticism, Impressionism, Japonisme, and Art Nouveau, among other influences. The little-known super-heroic invention by the creators of Superman, their first project after leaving DC Comics. Recommended. By Rick Geary. William H. Bonney went from cowboy and rancher's gunslinger to a pure outlaw, dodging justice in New Mexico before it was even a state. He was charming, fun-loving, often present at social events, quite appealing to the ladies. But he had no compunction about coldly killing a man, a sheriff, a deputy—anyone who got in the way of his rustling cattle or horses for an illicit living. He also proved hard to keep in jail once he was caught. It is probably his daring escapes from jails that made him most famous, and this is the main focus of this biography. NBM, 2018...More.

GOYA The Terrible Sublime
By El Torres. Art by Fran Galán. An original Spanish graphic novel, now in English. From the mind of the terror master El Torres comes a terrifying story that brings readers into the artist's world of madness and dark paintings, populated by recognizable figures like Manuel Godoy and the Duchess of Alba, in cobweb-shrouded palaces with beautiful grotesques living in the shadows. This unique story melds the artist's unique style and vision with the story of a man plagued by unreality, dreadful images of witchcraft and pure evil. He knows that he must not fall into what lurks beyond the dream of reason. Pegasus, 2019...More.

Highly Recommended. By Jorge Zentner. Art by Rubén Pellejero. A beautifully told story highlighted by superlative artwork, which reminds us of Alex Toth's work. Coloring is simply incredible also. A sweeping and poignant story of Jews fleeing the Russian pogroms at the end of the 19th century, from the perspective of young Malka as she grows up. For the family of the little red-head, trading Russia for the Argentine pampas isn't so easy. But it goes pretty well for young Malka. But mixed in with several other interesting other subplots is the one big one. A "friendly" golem, to make ends meet in the fields. But it all goes incredibly wrong in a surprising twist. With his characteristic grim sarcasm, Gibson takes us to war-torn 1945 Berlin, where RAF officer Naomi Givens must persevere against inconceivable, ruthless future forces, with the fates of epochs at stake. Our Highest Recommendation. By Alexander Braun. This second volume collects, in glorious full color and superior resolution, all 329 of Nemo's escapades from 1910 to 1927. Through them, we delight not only in the splendor of Slumberland, a surreal benchmark, but also McCay's pioneering panel layout and storytelling techniques, his timing and pacing, and extraordinary architectural detail. Highly Recommended. By Brian Kesinger. Brian Kesinger's first book, Walking Your Octopus, won a Chesley award from the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists. Brian is also an Annie Award-winning story artist who has worked on over ten Disney animated feature films from Tarzan to Moana. His first two "Octopus" books have our highest recommendation. Now we have an entirely new book which is virtually a paper doll book, with cut-out-able costumes & outfits for both our heroine and her pet octopus. Printed on extremely heavy card stock for long use. Or it's still a visual feast of steam-punkish costumes! Baby Tattoo, 2017...More.

The Girl Who Became One of the Disney Legends. Recommended. By Amy Nevesky. Art by Brittney Lee. A lovely children's picture book celebrating the career of Disney's most famous female creator. Even as a child, Mary Blair loved color, and all she wanted to do was to make art. But becoming an artist wasn't easy. Mary worked hard to enter contests and earn a spot at a school for the arts. She even had to work hard to find her place at the Walt Disney Studios. When she joined Walt's trip to South America, Mary had never seen such color. She collected that color and used it in her concept art for Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, and even the It's a Small World attraction at Disneyland. Disney Press, 2019...More.
