LOCAL FAUNA The Art of Peter de Sève Signed
Signed bookplate! Our Highest Recommendation. Peter de Sève's work spans four decades and various media, from magazines, books, and television commercials to Broadway posters and character designs for animated feature films. He is perhaps best recognized for his many covers for The New Yorker magazine and his character designs for the blockbuster Ice Age franchise (Scrat is a veritable international celebrity). De Sève has also contributed to such films as Finding Nemo, Robots, The Little Prince, and The Grinch, to name only a few. He is currently busy at work on various animated projects in both the United States and Europe. Cernunnos, 2023....More

Highly Recommended. The biggest issue yet: 138 pages with 58 pages in gory color! Mr. Monster artist Michael T. Gilbert gives us an illustrated account of his childhood neighbor George Evans; Dennis Cunningham, 1960's publisher of Weirdom and Tales from the Plague shares another pre-code inspired horror story. Lou Russo gives us an EC inspired tale "The Legacy of Man" and an illustration of Fredric Wertham that is accompanied by the "Seduction of The Innocent Bibliographical Note" listing ALL of the comic book publishers called out in his book. POSTER CHILD A Psychedelic Art & Technicolor Life of David Edward Byrd
Recommended. By David Edward Byrd and Robert von Goeben. A stunning retrospective on the art and stories behind one of rock 'n' roll's influential artists. Beginning in the late 1960s, graphic artist David Edward Byrd pioneered the iconic visual styles that have come to define rock 'n' roll graphics. Byrd created poster, concert, and album art for Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Lou Reed, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, Traffic, Van Halen, the Grateful Dead, the 1969 Woodstock Festival, and KISS, among others. In fact, the 1968 poster that Byrd created for the Jimi Hendrix Experience was voted #8 in the Top 25 Rock Posters by Billboard. Cameron Books, 2023....More

GENIUS, ANIMATED The Cartoon of Alex Toth
New Softcover Edition. Eisner Award Winner. Highly Recommended. By Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell. The third book in the award-winning series concludes the in-depth look into the life and art of one of the most significant comics and animation artists of all time. Focus is on Toth's groundbreaking contributions in the field of animation and features many rarely-seen or never-before-published pieces of art, much of it uncovered in the archives of Hanna-Barbera Studios! Here’s other works by Toth including more in this new softcover series and several out of print titles.

The first major monograph on the visionary nature paintings of the pioneering American modernist. Though Joseph Stella is primarily recognized for his dynamic Futurist-inspired paintings of New York, particularly of the Brooklyn Bridge, he was also compelled to express the powerful connection he felt to the natural world, a subject he pursued persistently throughout his career. Visionary Nature presents an overdue examination of this prolific and wide-ranging body of nature-based work. If Stella's cityscapes became symbols of a modern era, his pictures of flowers, plants, birds and trees were rooted in another, more ancient, primal and paradisaical world. LONG SEASON The Art of Josee Shimazaki
Recommended. The first collection of art works by the acclaimed illustrator Josee Shimazaki. This book features more than 120 art works by Shimazaki, including commercial works that the artist has created to date alongside original art works that have caused a sensation on social media. Ten of the art works are newly drawn for this book! She skillfully uses different colors to create light and shaded areas that combine to create the artist's signature soft atmosphere, nearly always with a beautiful girl somewhere in the lush picture. She draws relaxed scenes with a fleeting and fantastical atmosphere. PIE International, 2023....More

2024 Calendars

PIN-UP GIRLS GIL ELVGREN 2024 Calendar (Orange Circle)
Recommended. Gil Elvgren's delightfully daring women are back each month, offering the best in vintage pin-up (and sometimes humor) from the heyday of the good girl calendars. Here are his superb paintings which have made him the #1 pin-up painter of modern times, even eclipsing Varga. All reproduced oversized and spreading across both calendar pages like a Playboy centerfold. His leading ladies are caught in some rather precarious situations, or else being unashamedly teasing with little to nothing on. Return to a time when soft curls, bold curves and unabashed femininity were in demand and on display. They should have called this "The Best of Elvgren," these really are many of his finest and most seductive ladies. Orange Circle, 2023....More

Our Highest Recommendation. You have to check this out -- some of the funniest strips since Calvin and Hobbes and Cul de Sac. Brilliant, wildly imaginative, funny! - Bud. The second volume in Fantagraphics' English-language collection of the internationally beloved newspaper strip. Elves, witches, forest monsters, unicorns, children, talking cats and penguins--plus zombies with fitbits, Stephen King's Christine working as an Uber, and office politics? The bounds of a daily comic strip don't restrict Macanudo's imagination or subjects. With the range of The Far Side, the whimsy of Mutts, and the heart of Calvin & Hobbes, artist Liniers brings his distinctive illustrative line and sensitive watercolors to whatever crosses his mind on a given day. News & Notes

Alley Oop by V.T. Hamlin

Alley Oop and Dinny 1932-33 has gone out of print. We had ten copies put aside with a bumped corner; these are available while supply lasts [ALLE01. $19.95].

This series has proved very popular and it’s not surprising to find this finally sold out. We don’t know of any plans for a reprint—these are NOT print-on-demand so a new printing could be a major commitment. Books 2-6 are all currently still available, same $19.95 price. 1954-1958, one year per book [ALLE54, ALLE55, etc. $27.50 ea].

The Complete Sundays Vol 3 is in stock [ALLE3H. $75] and the later years by Dave Graue, beginning in 1974, are all still available. The 4th Sunday collection has been announced for shipment in November: Alley Oop in World War II: 1942-44 [ALLEY04H. $75].

EC Fan Addict #5

This has gone out of print--Roger just told me that Fantagraphics's printing may have been just 950. We’ve blown through all 300 of ours which included signed bookplates. We featured it in our latest catalog, so I hope anyone eager for it got their order in early or ordered it when we first announced it in this weekly email. Again, we hope it will be reprinted and I've sent that desire to bossman Gary Groth. At $15 it was an amazing bargain, so it’s not a surprise Fantagraphics blew through them just like we have. Roger Hill is almost finished work on issue #6, so stay tuned and we’ll announce it when it’s ready. #2 is also now out of print, but Roger is sending us his last 23 copies as I write this. All other issues are gone.

Spectrum Quarterly 3

The book is in house but we are awaiting receipt of the signed bookplate from Brom before we ship. We should have it available with the bookplate by next week. Both previous issues are out of print, but we still have copies of #2 with bookplate signed by cover feature artist Ed Binkley, which we produced for the last copies. While supply lasts only [SPEQ02. $25].

#2 includes features on Frank Frazetta, Donato Giancola, Greg Manchess, and memorials for James Bama, Neal Adams, Ken Kelley, Goerge Perez, and Tim Sale. One corner is slightly bumped--we have no perfect copies left.

Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta

The new printing of this has finally been announced by Tashchen. “Second printing, no edition number on the title page.” We stocked up on the first edition and still offer it at cover price. It is individually numbered and noted as the first printing [FANWFH. $200].

Tim Underwood

The guiding light behind Underwood Books, as well as Under/Miller Publishers, passed away earlier this month. A fine overview of his life is now up on our home page, written by Arnie Fenner, his partner, author and friend. I've also added a short piece myself, since Tim and I were far more than just publisher and retailer; our families grew up together.
