Slavers and gladiators, pirates and predators, an army of witches poised to conquer the world on wings of wickedness; these are the foes the Amazon and the Cimmerian must join together to defeat. Item Code: WWCONH
Hard Cover, 7x10, 160pg, Full Color
$24.99 $21.99

You know, I liked the idea but was cautious about how they'd pull this off without making it a mess. Well, Gail Simone proved what a smart and capable writer she is, and this is a very, very fine story. It starts with Conan as a youth, who meets a bright young girl from another tribe at an annual gathering. A tribe of only women. Flash forward to an adult Conan, who's suddently trying to help out a noble and ferocious fighter in the slave arena...who has no memory of who she is. Is this his childhood friend? Or is it our own Wonder Woman, who's been mysteriously transported into the Hyborean Age? Check it out, it's an outstanding, stand-alone novel I really, really enjoyed.

This is Ross at his finest, with characters that seem so real you could meet them. And of course Dini creates realistic scenarios in today's world. There's nothing like this in comics. Pulps, Reference and The Phantom

THE BRITISH SUPERHERO
Highly Recommended. By Chris Murray. A professor of comic studies in Scotland, Chris Murray reveals the largely unknown and rather surprising history of the British superhero. The superhero genre is a blend of several influences, and in British comics these influences were quite different from those in America. He identifies the origins of the superhero and supervillain in 19th century penny dreadfuls and boys' weeklies and in science fiction of the 1920s and 1930s. Read about the emergence of British superheroes in the 1940s, and the advent of “fake” American comics when imports were stopped during WWII, as they also did in Canada in the WECA era. Then there's the reformatting of reprinted material, including quite amazingly, the very first appearances of Superman, reformatted with its own Brit cover art! University of Mississippi Press, 2017...More.

Then, a police informant's corpse is deposited in The Shadow's secret sanctum as a deadly warning from the criminal mastermind known only as “Gray Fist.” This instant collector's item showcases both classic color pulp covers by George Rozen and the original interior illustrations by Tom Lovell, with historical commentary by Will Murray and Anthony Tollin. From the creator of The Reprieve & Flight of the Raven. Recommended. Jean-Pierre Gibrat. A beautifully drawn and deeply emotional graphic novel, following the singular story of a young man caught up in World War I. In a small town at the foot of the Pyrenees on the French Mediterranean, lifelong friends are called to arms, except for Mattéo, who, as the son of Spanish refugees, is exempt from service. HIGHEST HOUSE
Recommended. By Mike Carrey and Peter Gross. Through a subtle alternate history, The Highest House takes us to a fictional Balkanesque country of the 16th century. Mike Carrey and Peter Gross (Lucifer, The Unwritten) draw from this context a captivating fantasy narrative that reflects on the human soul, the corrupting power of slavery, and the inequalities of class, all from the different perspectives of the House's many inhabitants and our mysteriously gifted young slave, Moth. A multifaceted fantasy sure to stay with readers long after the final page has turned. IDW, 2108...More.

MCCAY
Recommended. By Thierry Smolderen. Art by Jean Phillippe Bramanti. McCay is an invented biography chronicling authentic - though only partially true - stories of the life of the future creator of Little Nemo, Winsor McCay, in which McCay's life is enriched by an imaginary encounter with British mathematician and science fiction writer Charles Hinton--who introduces McCay to the the existence of a fourth spatial dimension. And Silas the anarchist, Harry Houdini and William Randolph Hearst. And a murder mystery, perpetrated by a man who should be dead. It's not the bio you might expect, but a fictionalized tale of the artist, from vaudeville worker to newspaper star to animator extraordinaire. Titan Comics, 2018...More.

SONS OF EL TOPO Volume 1 Cain
Recommended. By Alejandro Jodorowsky. Art by José Ladrönn. El Topo was a bandit without limits, a man with no moral compass, but his journey through the arid west eventually brought him enlightenment. That's the tale in the famous 1970 cult film El Topo. This entirely new sequel continues that story. El Topo abandons his first born son, Cain, and yet had another, Abel, sowing the seeds for this brilliantly drawn new work. Fueled by resentment, and unable to kill his saintly father, the already cursed Cain plans to murder his half-brother, in a tale of magic and mayhem. Violence, nudity. Archaia, 2018...More.

New Classics Illustrated

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #3 Robin Hood
From Classics #7, 1942, redrawn in the fifties. Recommended. By Howard Pyle. Art by Jack Sparling. First done in 1942, Gilberton decided to bring the art up to date and in the 1950s asked Jack Sparling to adapt the classic, and provided a fine new painted cover. But they stayed with the classic Howard Pyle original adaptation, first done by the fabled artist in the late 1880s and still a definitive retelling. CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #18 The Invisible Man
From Classics #153, 1959. Recommended. By H.G. Wells. Art by Norman Nodel. Painted cover by Geoffrey Biggs. Another true icon in the series, it's amazing that they didn't adapt this incredible story until 1959. Artist Norman Nodel had worked with Classics since 1941, and was also known for his Golden Age titles Supersnipe and his work in True Comics. H. G. Wells' tale of the mad scientist who discovers the secret of invisibility and wields its awesome power to his own selfish ends, doomed by a violent temper to be his own worst enemy. The cover here is one of the all-time great ones in the series, it perfectly captures the mystery of the invisible man, on the run from his crimes. Classic Comic Store, 2016...More.

One of the roughly 60 titles that were redrawn, with new painted covers, in the mid-1950s, here by DC Comics stalwarts. CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #21 Treasure Island
Published as Classics #664, 1949. Later cover. Highly Recommended. By Robert Louis Stevenson. Art by Alex A. Blum. Robert Louis Stevenson's great tale of pirates and buried treasure--amazing to think it took Classics almost a decade to adapt this great story, but they did a very good job. It's one of Blum's best works, and this sports the new painted cover done in the 1950s to modernize it. It's also quite good. Plus, text features on Stevenson's life, on his fiction, and a timeline of its adaptions to film and television. Classic Comic Store, 2016...More.

CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #25 The Three Musketeers
From Classics #1, 1941, this redrawn in the mid-1950s. Highly Recommended. By Alexandre Dumas. Art by George Evans & Reed Crandall. One of the finest Classic comics ever, and the very first one in the series. This is a collaboration of two superb artists, fresh off working for EC Comics, together on a book-length story. It doesn't get much better than this! The exciting tale of D'Artagnan with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, the three heroes of 17th century France, loyal and fearless to a fault. The sequel was also done as a classic, Twenty Years After. Includes a prose biography of Dumas, and the story of his work. This was first published in 1844 and has been a classic ever since. CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED #26 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
From Classics #47, 1948, with a new mid-1950s cover painting. Recommended. By Jules Verne. Science and adventure are electrifying accomplices in Jules Verne's classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This epic and enduring tale anticipates not just wonders such as electric light and submarine navigation, but the obsession with technology and travel that today so shapes our lives. It is Verne's inspired foresight, combined with his extraordinary talent for storytelling, that continue to make this novel such a compelling read. This is the original 1948 artwork behind a handsome painted cover. Classic Comic Store, 2018...More.

ELFIN RHYMES By Norman
Facsimile of the original 1900 edition. Recommended. Art by Carton Moorepark. This charming children's book, written by an anonymous author known only as "Norman," was first published in 1900 and is now extremely rare. It features 11 rhymes that capture the mysterious and sometimes ridiculous world of goblins, witches and fairies. Naughty imps and elves love to play pranks, tease and make mischief on humans, animals and one another. And while few of these fairy tales have a happy ending, all of them offer the reader a moral lesson of sorts. Each verse is accompanied by several drawings by illustrator Carton Moorepark in either one, two or three simple colors. Art Books, 2018...More.
