William Bouguereau, Memorabilia, The Island of Dr. Moreau, After Houdini, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Maxon Crumb and more!

I can't say enough about a new book on 19th century artist William Bouguereau. Several graphic novels are real treats: Memorabilia, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and After Houdini. Catwoman gets a new low-priced statue. Maxon Crumb is finally examined. A perfect best-of book is Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse: The Greatest Adventures. Two new Wonder Woman collections, from giant Omnibus to mini-covers. And Bill Schelly has two new books of interviews with early fan writers, artists, publishers and dealers.

WILLIAM BOUGUEREAU The Essential Works
All-new and Exceptiional. Our Highest Recommendation. By Dr Kara Lysandra Ross and Frederick C. Ross. William Bouguereau was the most popular artist in nineteenth-century France. This book is an exploration of the four genres most prevalent throughout Bouguereau's career: mythological works, religious works, peasants, and portraits. This final section on portraits focuses on paintings of heads and hands, where he concentrated on the subtleties of capturing human emotion, something at which he was a consummate master. $65.00

I really think this is a fine book. I took it on my vacation with me and have learned a great deal about this artist, who I have always held in high esteem. The quality of the reproductions from original artwork, is such that I found myself literally studying each work, even his portraits. It pointed out his attention to fingers, and skin...some of these are almost like photos, they are so real. Wonderful, outstanding new collection.

MAXON Art Out of Chaos
By Malcolm Whyte. Excerpts from Maxon's writings, anecdotes from his brother R. Crumb, plus a gallery of Maxon's bizarre and surreal artworks crown an inspiring story of a man who candidly bares his world to us through ink, oil, metal, wood, and word. Maxon Crumb—artist, author, and yogi—embarked on a coast-to-coast odyssey to conquer one severe challenge after another: a brutal childhood, crushing sibling rivalry, lost love, death threats, and debilitating disease. Like many R. Crumb fans, I've heard the stories about his even-stranger brother Maxon. Here is his bio and art, in a slim and very accessible volume in full color. There's even a little of R. Crumb here too.

Before Magic the Gathering was hiring all the best fantasy artists, there was Dungeons and Dragons, doing exactly the same thing. With big budgets and huge sales, they could afford the best. Here is the first major art book yet on an amazing genre of artwork. You don't have to be a gamer to appreciate what you will find here, by dozens of names familiar to all of us. Often the Spectrum annual was the only way to find ANY this work, if you were't a gamer and keeping up with all the latest releases, as well as the long-running Dragon Magazine.

MEMORABILIA
A Homage to Ditko, Kirby, Wood, Eisner & Corben!! Highly Recommended. By Sergio Ponchione. Poised between reality and fantasy, Memorabilia is acclaimed cartoonist Sergio Ponchione's wildly original homage to the legendary comic book creators who captured his imagination as a child. Weaving history, speculative fiction, and pure fantasy, Ponchione has crafted a visually stunning love letter befitting such towering comic book legends. Fantagraphics, 2018...More.

H.G. WELLS The Island of Dr. Moreau
Highly Recommended. By Dobbs. Art by Fabrizio Fiorentino. Based on the original story by H. G. Wells, this graphic novel adaptation, translated from the French album, brings a whole new look to the disturbing and visionary tale. Set adrift in the Pacific Ocean, Edward Prendick is rescued only to find himself on the strange remote island of Dr. Moreau. Moreau has been conducting bizarre experiments for years, genetically modifying animals to give them each a conscience and the ability to speak. These “Beastmen” obey a very precise set of rules called The Law, which forbids them to exhibit any primitive behavior and commands that they worship Dr. Moreau like a god. Insight Comics, 2018...More.

Item Code: HGWISH
Hard Cover - No Dustjacket, 9x11, 64pg, Full Color

Companion to this is The Time Machine, just listed last week. I didn't know Dr. Moreau as well, so I was eager to read this. I found it both a good read and suitably creepy, with good solid artwork. Again, this was first done in France as a graphic album.

AFTER HOUDINI
Recommended. By Jeremy Holt. Art by John Lucas. Harry Houdini, master magician and covert spy for the United States government, is dead...or is he? The only man who can save him is his estranged son Josef, who, like his father, knows the power of magic—real magic—and how it can be more than just an illusion. Josef Houdini takes after his father: A gifted escape artist, there's not a jam he can't get himself out of. Then again, when your father is one of the greatest illusionists of all time, that comes as no surprise. What does come as a surprise is the fact that Harry Houdini is not only the world's greatest magician, but also a top-secret operative for the US government during World War I. LIP HOOK A Tale of Rural Unease
An Adult-themed take on Lovecraftian horror. By David Hine. Art by Mark Stafford. Somewhere in the British Isles, at the end of a neglected road, there is a village called Lip Hook. For its inhabitants, the village is more than the end of the road—it's the end of the world. Beyond it, there is nothing but mist-shrouded marshland. Few travelers take the road to Lip Hook, but one foggy night, a car speeds perilously toward the village. The driver is a dangerously beautiful woman, the passenger a man with a gunshot wound and a suitcase containing a treasure he has risked his life for. Cash-strapped but in need of a place to hide, the two fugitives seek shelter at the Hanged Man Inn, where the woman persuades the innkeeper to accept payment in kind. Self Made Hero, 2018. WONDER WOMAN The Golden Age Omnibus Volume 3
Sensation Comics #49-69, Wonder Woman #16-25, and Comics Cavalcade #14-22. By Robert Kanigher, Joyce Murchison, William Moulton Marston. Art by Harry G. Peter. Wonder Woman, the best-known female superhero in the world and star of her own monthly comics, faced the evil of the Axis powers in these World War II-era tales. In these stories, Wonder Woman protects Man's World, using her bracelets and lasso of truth to stop injustice. These tales include Wonder Woman's battle to keep innocents from being drawn into a land of nightmares and see her sending a gangster to Paradise Island to be reformed, attending a costume party to prevent a murder and much more! As I mentioned in News and Notes last week, I am really excited about this. This is the very first time DC has ever collected, in total, one of their amazing pre-hero titles. Here are pre-Superman Siegel & Shuster, Leo O'Mealia's Fu Manchu, and so very much more. Now we can read the complete serials (these were often just 2-4 pages per issue) and few of us even have a scattering of these, as the prices keep going up and up on copies in any condition.

Reserve your copy early...I am a bit nervous that DC could underprint on these and demand could cause this to go out of print quickly, like similar books from Fantagraphics and other publishers. I will bring in as many as I can justify to prevent these selling out, but your advance reservation will help me. As always, your credit card will not be charged until this ships to you from us.

Another surprise, Wonder Woman and Batman star in an outstanding Celtic-related graphic novel. The Time Machine gets a new hardcover adaptation from France. THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Batman and Wonder Woman
Collects #1-6. Introduction by Jim Fitzpatrick. Highly Recommended. By Lliam Sharp. Art by Lliam Sharp, Romulo Fajardo Jr. Whoa, this is simply amazing. Fabled Irish fantasy artist Jim Fitzpatrick is credited by the incredible Liam Sharp as inspiration for this work, and it shows. At times it also reminds us of Barry Windsor-Smith's amazing Pre-Raphaelite paintings. This is really, really good. When a Celtic god's murder leads to a war between the fairy folk and a possible breach between worlds, Wonder Woman must find the murderer and keep the peace, and brings in Batman for help. Amidst settings in rural Europe and fairytale settings, the two Justice Leaguers must rely on each other to uncover a murder while meeting and battling legendary gods, witches and demons of Celtic myth and legend!! H.G. WELLS THE TIME MACHINE
Recommended. By Dobbs. Art by Mathieu Moreau. H. G. Wells‘ classic tale The Time Machine was one of the first stories ever to explore the notion of time travel. Now rediscover this incredible work of science fiction with a stunning, all-new graphic novel adaptation! It differs interestingly from the traditional Disney film and the story we're used to by now, offering enough alteration to keep your interest even if you are like me and know the story practically by heart. English translation of an original French novel, very well drawn with a younger Time Traveler and an unusual alternate ending. Insight Comics, 2018...More.

THIMBLE THEATRE AND THE PRE-POPEYE CARTOONS OF E.C. SEGAR
Highly Recommended. More than a decade before he created the world's most famous cartoon sailor, E.C. Segar began his comics career in the movies. He drew cartoons for silent movie theater slides, the Charlie Chaplin comic strip, and a daily strip about Chicago's movies and entertainment. Then, in 1919, he penned his own “small screen” creation for the newspapers, Thimble Theatre, where Popeye was to be born. Here are all of E.C. Segar's early comics and illustrations, and 125 pre-Popeye Thimble Theater Sunday pages, including the complete run of the famed Western desert saga, a series that rivals his later work in superb art, storytelling and humor. Closeout Price! Highly Recommended. By Cullen Murphy. BRITISH POSTERS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Closeout Price! Our Highest Recommendation. By Richard Slocombe. One hundred posters, a great many fresh and entirely new to us, from this amazing period. Some proclaimed in bold type that “Victory of the Allies is assured” and featured stalwart British soldiers alongside exaggerated enemy figures. Others, however, hung on the walls of bus and railway stations, town halls, and pubs, called for continued self-sufficiency, urging Britons to raise chickens, conserve and repair, join the Wacs and Wrens. As the threat of espionage became extreme, posters cautioned soldiers and civilians alike against talking about the war: “Furtive Fritz is always listening” warned one; another, “Keep mum--she's not so dumb.” IWM, 2015...More.

THE DEFINITIVE BETTY BOOP
Closeout Price! Recommended. By Max Fleischer. Art by Bud Counihan. Introduction by Brian Walker. Before Marilyn and Madonna, Betty booped and wriggled her way into hearts with her unique mix of wide-eyed innocence and sensuality. Even while her short cartoons were making history, she was also starring in a full color Sunday Page--125 of them here. Plus 160 dailies. Here is a naïve young chorus girl and star, trying hard to survive in Hollywood, amidst the screwballs, crazy directors and looney actors....essentially, the creators were spoofing their own industry with the delectable Ms. Boop as the innocent heroine. Stan Lee in Memorium

With the passing of Stan Lee last week, his upcoming Taschen book written by Roy Thomas quickly sold out, from us and also from the publisher. We ordered extra copies but they were quickly spoken for.

Also sold out is the limited signed edition of his graphic novel/autobiography Amazing! Fantastic! Incredible! We have two copies of the trade edition [AFIH. $30] in stock and more coming soon.

The Best of Comix Book: When Marvel Went Underground Deluxe is signed by Stan and by Denis Kitchen [BECBD. $125]. This is a special order item, so we have none in stock, but as far as we know, we can still get copies if you want to reserve one.

The poster we offered last week also sold out within two days. We don't have anything else signed by Stan, but on the website are plenty of Marvel Masterworks, Omnibus Editions, Epic Collections and Artist's Editions with his work.

Short takes on recent books:

Mort Cinder by Oesterheld and Breccia

Gorgeous fine-line artwork, and a very strange story of an old antiquarian dealer who somehow gets wrapped up with a man who cannot die...Mort Cinder. As the multiple stories develop, our elderly protagonist actually goes along with Mort into the past to experience World War I and other historic events. Very strange, very unique. I'd always heard good things about this strip, and it has not disappointed. Love the art.

Isola by Branden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl

I really enjoyed this. It collects the first five chapters of the Image comics series, but it's entirely in animation style art—rich, detailed, not unlike a Miyazaki film. The princess has been cursed and turned into an enormous tiger. Her loyal-to-the-death first warrior is her sole protection as they travel the wilderness, trying to escape from unnatural forces that want only to eliminate the last crown ruler. It's an unpredictable and special story, and although this first sequence covers a lot of ground, I'm eager to see what is to come for our very special pair of heroines.
