ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN Volume 12
Collects #65-71, 1955-56. Highly Recommended. By Ogden Whitney, Harry Lazarus, Kurt Schaffenberger, John Rosenberger The Comics Code in general tamped down creativity and variety in comics. Stan Lee's Atlas line was a good example of this, at least until Kirby and Ditko came back on board. But for editor and writer Richard Hughes, this brought out his absolute best. Stories explored totally new avenues, with more time travel, sci-fi and excellent charactization and complex plots, He even takes 10 or 12 pages to develop a good story, rather than the industry standard of just 6 or 8. This is outstanding comics writing and one of the series I most enjoy reading now, 50 years later. PS Artbooks, 2017....More.

DESEGREGATING COMICS — DEBATING BLACKNESS IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN COMICS
Recommended. Edited by Eisner Award Winner Oiana Whitted. Some comics fans view the industry's Golden Age (1930s-1950s) as a challenging time when it comes to representations of race, an era when the few Black characters appeared as brutal savages, devious witch doctors, or unintelligible minstrels. Yet the true portrait is more complex and reveals that even as caricatures predominated, some Golden Age comics creators offered more progressive and nuanced depictions of Black people. Desegregating Comics assembles a team of leading scholars to explore how debates about the representation of Blackness shaped both the production and reception of Golden Age comics. Custom gold foil-imprinted slipcase. This is an uncommon "historical fiction" set in ancient Rome, written in 1941 but not published until 1967, now adapted into a Sunday Page format and first published online on the ERB website. It tells the story of a young man's courage in the face of cruel adversity, and of his tragic love for a beautiful Belgian slave girl. Britannicus, the defiant son of an arrogant chief in far-off Britain, was just another barbarian to the haughty Romans who captured and enslaved him, now the personal gladiator/slave of the mad Emperor Caligula. DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING
By Burne Hogarth. Dynamic figure drawing is the most essential — and the most difficult — of all skills for an artist to learn. The hardest problem is to visualize the figure in the tremendous variety of poses which the body takes in action, poses which plunge the various forms of the body into deep space and show them in radical foreshortening. Foreshortening itself is, in fact, the single most challenging aspect of figure drawing. Watson-Guptill, 1970. Out Of Print. Condition: Very Fine. Minute crease on dust cover front edge....More.
