KYOSAI The Israel Goldman Collection
Recommended. By Koto Sadamura. The Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) saw Japan transform itself from a feudal country into a modern state. The turbulent times in which he lived are reflected in his riotous images, in which skeletons, demons and ghosts rub shoulders with classically rendered ukiyo-e courtesans. Among his most charming and inventive works are his brilliant depictions of animals — crows, frogs and elephants, among many others — which often stand in for political figures of the day. Royal Academy of Arts, 2022. ...More.

By Koto Sadamura. Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) delighted in the depiction of animals — crows with strong personalities, frogs in the schoolroom, rats on trapezes, cats in procession, elephants performing tricks — and frequently used them to satirize contemporary society. This small but enchanting book reveals a cavalcade of Kyosai's creatures from the renowned Israel Goldman Collection, with an introduction to the artist and his menagerie by Koto Sadamura, a leading authority on Kyosai. Think Game of Thrones! Closeout Price! Recommended. By F. Scott Fitzgerald. Introduction by Blake Hazard. First published in 1925, The Great Gatsby has been acclaimed by generations of readers and is now reimagined as a unique graphic novel. The story is captured by artist Aya Morton, who works in soft pastels and water-color. Here is the mysteriously wealthy Gatsby and his tragic love for the beautiful Daisy. Iconic text has been artfully distilled by Fred Fordham, who keeps much of the original dialogue — so much, it took me three sittings to read this. It's dense! Scribner, 2020....More.

Classics Illustrated Hardcovers on Sale

This is the first nine of 30 titles we just scored and put on sale. These are from the current England-based publisher who took over from Jack Lake after 2015. We’ve never carried these in hardcover before. If they do well, we may be able to get another 30 or so…the publisher did 65 hardcovers before electing to stick to softcover. We’re also working on getting a Deluxe Boxed Three Musketeers Set (it was the very first Classic in 1941) and some other specials at regular price. But it’ll be a while, they’ll have to come in from England.

George Perez 1954-2022

We lost yet another artist recently, after James Bama and then Neal Adams. George was another mover and shaker in comics, best known for his wonderful and many DC titles, most especially Wonder Woman.

He came to prominence in the 1970s penciling The Avengers for Marvel Comics, and returned to the franchise in the 1990s. In the 1980s he penciled The New Teen Titans, which became one of DC Comics' top-selling series. He penciled DC's landmark limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths, followed by relaunching Wonder Woman as both writer and penciller for the rebooted series. In the meantime, he worked on other comics published by Marvel, DC, and other companies into the 2010s. He was known for his detailed and realistic rendering, and his facility with complex crowd scenes.

Underwood Books File Copies

We are getting more titles online and you can get an advance look at them here. Some are very limited in quantity, such as Best of Gahan Wilson [BOGW. $50] with just four as-new copies (originally published at $15 in 2004). And Clive Barker's Shadows in Eden [CBSHA. $45] with corner wear, from 1991. Also only four available.

Also too few to feature, we have three copies of Shameless Art [SHAAH. $15/$9.95] and five copies of Strange Days: Aliens, Adventurers, Devils and Dames [STRDH. $17.95/$9.95. We're working on getting more of these last two titles, along with Frazetta Telling Stories and several other Underwood titles that we previously offered on sale, before they sold out.

Teaser: Classics Illustrated On Sale

We just scored 30 Classic Illustrated editions in hardcover, published by the latest owner of the license, called CCS, who is located in England. We’ve never handled these as hardcovers before, but we offered some of them in softcover when they were published by Jack Lake. We’ll break these up over the next three emails, but you can click here for whatever we have up so far. We’ll start uploading them next week, May 9th or 10th.

Neal Adams

Neal passed away late last week, nearly the same day as James Bama did. We’re all going to miss both men. But for a comic fan like me, Neal was the face of how good comics could be for years and years. His Batman and Deadman, his wonderful covers and work for House of Secrets and House of Mystery, his work for Marvel…all so, so very good. He gave a lot to the comics world, as an innovator and the head of Continuity Studios.

Just by coincidence, some of our Free and Vintage comics for Free Comic Book Day are from Neal and Continuity, published in 1990. I was a kid when Deadman first came out. I was a veteran when I finally met Neal at his booth at a San Diego Comic-Con decades later. We spent a good 20 or 30 minutes chatting about comics and setting up at shows. Amazing man.

The Bud Gathering 2022

Also known as Alberta’s Thank You party. Alberta Severino worked here for more than 30 years and many of you know her from calling us up when she was answering the phone. Well, Alberta put a “gathering” for my family and a bunch of ex- and current employees last weekend. And we had a fine time. Diane was there, who I think hit 14 years here before retiring last year.

Two of my kids made it, Philip and Alison (some of you met them at past Comic-Cons before they got careers to keep them away), with their kids. I’m now a grandad three times over.

And LaDonna of course and Todd, Harry and Laurie all from our current staff. Past BPCA’ers included Liz, Matthew and Mike B from the very old days, Kate from the REALLY old days (1988). My son’s wife Jenn worked here in 2012 and brought her new baby girl, April, here in a basket. April is ten years old now.

Michelle Nolan came down from Bellingham, Washington, on her way to Pulp Con in Chicago. And my old buddy Steve Adamovich’s wife Kathy (aka Cobblestone Books), her daughter Sarah and granddaughter Aurora. And my sisters, Carolyn and Nancy, who both help out here with newsletters and things. Did I forget anyone?

Several important folks couldn’t make it. Dave Cowie, my manager for 22 years, now a craft beer brewer, was on his way to Italy. And we missed Joe Douville, who back in 2011-2012 helped morph the old business into what it is today, when we were down to just three of us!
